I always thought this was just a tea shop, never knew they actually sold boba. The tea is very good, and the boba is super fresh. I do wish it was a bit chewier, but that's what I get for freshness. They only have two tables and a handful of chairs, but truthfully, I wouldn't lounge here as the scent of the teas are too strong for me and not to my liking. Despite being an Asian girl raised in the Bay Area, I don't really know my milk teas very well (a moral failing I am furiously working to rectify). But I'm going to cautiously declare this one of the better (best?) places in the South Bay for people scarred by too-sweet and insipid milk teas. I came here with my sister at 10:40am, just after they opened. The (super sweet, super lovely) women who opened the shop told us that their tapioca pearls weren't ready yet (oh, no), but would we like to try the grass jelly? (Maybe?) So I ordered a roasted oolong tea with grass jelly. The grass jelly (an extra 50¢) is lovely, super silky and soft and delicately flavored (quite similar to the texture of pudding, actually). I'm generally pretty skeptical of jellies (a lot of tea places will give you something aggressively gelatinous and hard and coated in this kind of saccharine glaze) but this one is so worth it and I'm going to peer-pressure any friends I take her in the future to try it out. At least once. You owe it to yourself! I almost want to say that the grass jelly offers a superior experience in the milk tea, particularly at Ten Ren. There's a strong but not aggressive tea flavor that isn't diminished by the milk. The texture of the grass jelly also allows the jelly to feel more smoothly a part of the tea-drinking experience, where tapioca pearls are disruptive--you have to stop in the middle of a strawful to chew them, whereas the grass jelly succumbs gently to pressure and goes down more smoothly. This is my new political platform and I'm going to campaign aggressively for it. They open at 10:30am every day. Good to visit if you're in the area for Orenchi, came in early to put your name down, and need an enjoyable diversion for an hour. read more

Their tea actually tastes like, well, tea, and not sugar, as is the case with your Quicklys and Lollicups. My go to tends to be the hot Jasmine milk green tea, simply because of how amazingly fragrant it is. I have been on a boba tea kick as of late, and found myself way out in Cupertino, outside of my usual radius one day. Seeing the high marks for this place on Yelp, I ventured out to give it a try. Parking in this plaza is really annoying. And when you go inside, you realize that this place is more an actual tea shop intended to sell loose-leaf teas and that their tea drinks are kind of only part of what their business. There's a minimum $6 charge for credit card use. There's nowhere to sit so you can only grab your drink and go. Clearly this place was not like the standard boba shops that encourage teenagers to hang out. BUT the drink I got - the honey lemon green tea with ai-yu jelly - was so refreshing that I found myself driving all the way back here and braving the horrible parking situation and going back to buy two drinks at a time (because I needed to hit $6) just for myself. The drinks here really hit the spot. After making about five trips out here, I realized that there's another Ten Ren Tea in Milpitas, which is muuuuuch closer to where I live in North San José. This OG milk tea joint is my go to because their selection, tea quality, and topping options (homemade grass jelly, red bean, aloe, ai yu jelly, lychee jelly, etc.). It's hard to settle for another spot after I've become accustomed to their high level of quality. I usually get a caffeine free options w/no sugar or ice - cool chrysanthemum w/grass jelly, aiyu jelly and aloe or buckwheat milk tea w/red bean and grass jelly. It's an extra $1 for a large cup, which isn't so bad since their drinks are about $2-3. As my drink was being made the worker informed me it might be sweet so I could taste it if it was okay, which it was! So nice to see they care about customers preferences. If you prefer a strong tea flavors in your drinks, this is the place to go! I was able to try the oolong milk tea with grass jelly and mango yogurt tea with regular pearls. The oolong milk tea with grass jelly predominantly tasted like oolong tea with a splash of milk. Although I usually like my drinks more milk based and a tad bit sweeter, I thought the oolong milk tea was pretty good. The mango yogurt tea was interesting because instead of milk, they used the Asian yogurt drink (i.e. Yakult). This drink was definitely way sweeter than the oolong milk tea, but instead of it tasting primarily tea-based, it tasted more yogurt-based. My only tiny complaint is that they use caps instead of plastic seals because I like mixing my drinks before drinking them! read more

We ordered the taro milk tea - the drink had a rubbery after taste and when we brought it up to them they agreed to make a different drink for us. They said it was because the taro was powder and maybe it wasn't completely dissolved..?? I ordered the milk tea (no sugar no ice) with aloe and tiny pearls. That was pretty good and tasted as expected. I usually like to order pudding in my drinks as well but that wasn't an option here. I am a big fan of milk tea and I like to try out different places, so I was excited when I saw that I had never even tried the highest rated milk tea place in the area. Ten Ren is known for their loose leaf tea but they also have bubble tea for purchase here. I got the regular milk tea with tapioca and requested half sweet. Let's just say that half sweet basically tasted like zero sweet to me (I do have a sweet tooth, I admit) so next time I'll probably just get a 75% sweet and go with that. The tea is pretty good and goes down smoothly. I don't really like the actual shop though. It's really small and given that there's so much loose leaf tea here, it just smells like a Chinese herbal pharmacy (it's not that pleasant). I've always had nothing but good experiences at Ten Ren, regardless of its location. This place is definitely for someone who enjoys tasting the actual tea behind their drink and isn't too keen on overly sweet drinks. Honestly, I much prefer paying Ten Ren a visit over the other boba places in this huge Asian plaza due to the fact that Ten Ren has always been consistent, has great customer service (at least in my experience, my boyfriend forgot to change the level of sweetness in his drink, and they kindly remade the drink on the spot with a smile !), and their prices ! My go-to is always the Jasmine Green Milk Tea (100% sweetness isn't that sweet at all !!) ... And I believe it's only $2.00 for a regular & $0.50 for an additional topping. That's super cheap compared to all the different boba places today that average more than $3.00 ! They also have Five Star, which is always a plus ! I've been coming here since I was a kid and it has never failed to satisfy my craving for quality tea. As soon as you step into the store, the aroma of high quality tea hits you and you know you're about to get something good. I ordered a honey lemon green tea with aloe. Ok I know this isn't boba but sometimes I just don't really want boba. This drink is very refreshing and light! Plus in my mind it feels a little healthier because I have aloe in my drink instead of boba. People around me were all ordering the lychee yogurt drink so I wish I tried that instead. I think this place uses real brewed tea.. considering all the boxes of tea leaves they sell, I would hope so. I've tried some of the fruit teas, and I think it's a hit-or-miss on how "artificial" they taste. The green apple was extremely sour and artificial tasting. However, the mango and peach are awesome! Because of the syrup, you don't even need additional sweetness. The ginger tea is also okay- it is a bit spicy and has a good kick. My favorite, however, is the osmanthus oolong, which has a natural sweetness. Prices are reasonable, and service is always super fast. I'm extremely disappointed. Before the remodeling this place was my go-to. I would drive 25mins because nothing other than Ten Ren would satisfy me, though there is at least 5 bobas spots within 1 mile of me in each direction. All if you boba lovers probably have an idea which area I live by. However now, Ten Ren has either forgotten how they used to make their milk teas or they simply don't care to perfect it. The teas I get now are either too milky, not milky enough, too watered down, or just bitter no 'tea' taste, more like the bottom of the pot taste. The pearls are still very good. Hands down my favorite boba place. The milk tea here is not overly sweet, and you can actually taste the tea. The pearls are nice and chewy, and the employees don't overfill your drink with ice. Also, the lines here are much shorter than those at Fantasia's. My favorites are the black milk tea, Jasmine milk tea, and the lychee green tea (they actually put real lychees into the drink!). This is my absolutely favorite place to go to for fruity teas! The tea quality is really good and the fruity teas are always refreshing. I've tried many teas but every time I go back to Ten Ren. For fruit teas you can add any flavor for 50 cents extra. Usually I like to get the mango strawberry, mango lychee, or strawberry lychee green tea. Also note that you have to spend a minimum of $7 to use card to pay. Anything under and you have to pay cash. So it'd be best to pay together if you're with friends. read more

My gripe on other places is that they use powder for a lot of their flavors and lack the bold tea flavor of their drinks. Ten Ren pearl milk teas have a good mix of ice, tea taste, and other flavors with just the right amount of sweetness. Just like me. Shaddap. Ten Ren is a very well known tea shop (perhaps not here in the south bay) and they are serious about tea. It isn't a pearl tea only spot like most people think. If you want loose leaf tea, they've got several different varieties and qualities to meet your needs. Sorry no fried squid, butter toast, ton katsu. Well they have that tea egg, but I'm too cool for that so I haven't tried it. Be my guest and tell me how it is. This place is a must for pearl tea or other tea products to go. I've tried a lot of boba places over the years, from fancy ones to janky ones to hipster ones to traditional ones and everything in between. Asha, Gong Cha, Purple Kow, 85, Pekoe, Plentea, Sharetea, and the list goes onnnnnnnnnn. Ten Ren continues to occupy the hallowed spot of being "my favorite." Now, the store itself... kinda sucks in terms of ambience and layout. Some boba places you can get your drink, then sit down to hang out with friends for half an hour or something. Can't really do that here, because they have a grand total of like, 5 chairs and 2 small tables. (Its neighbor Fantasia on the other hand is great for hanging out at.) But I'll forgive that, because I come here for the drink itself. Dunno why you'd want to hang out in a store that's half drink station and half bulk-tea-sales anyway. I prefer a milk tea that has a stronger tea taste, while being lighter on the sweetness and creaminess, so I'm also a fan of places like Asha, if that helps you understand my preferences. Straight up, the tea here is great. The jasmine tea? Actually tastes like the kind of jasmine tea you'd drink on its own too, which is kinda rare for a boba place because why do you think they drown the tea in sugar and milk in the first place? I mean once you go in, it is filled with tea and Asian herbs and medicine from wall-to-wall. Mix in the rude employees and disgusting bathroom, you feel like you've teleported into somewhere in Asia. First time here. Cute store. Nice vibe. Matcha Milk Tea- 3 Stars- Watered down. I opted to go without red bean topping assuming the drink would stand on it's own. It did not. If I were to return I would definitely get it with the topping. Dragon eye Tea- 3 1/2 Stars- Watered down, but the longan bits we're exceptionally delicious. If I ordered this again, I would definitely pick some sort of add in. I feel this tea could easily be 5 stars if it just had a bit more flavor. They sell Pu Erh tea it's my favorite. I came in today to pickup a DoorDash order around 4:30pm. Saw the pickup window and stood there waiting for one of the employees to come up to the window. The girls were screaming very loudly of how tired they were and completely ignoring customers. Nobody came to the window and even this one girl who was very loud looked at me and just walked by. That one girl did nothing but talk very loudly and screaming while still neglecting customers who were by the window. She was loudly saying, "why is she just standing there?" So I angrily said excuse me and she goes yes and finally gives me my drinks. After walking away, she says "why is she so mad?" Terrible customer service on all the employees making customers wait and just looking at them, while also rudely talking about them when everyone can hear. read more

This Tenren is my go-to tea place among the sea of tea shops in this area. Their tea is delicious, their toppings fresh, and the prices cheap! I also love the authenticity of this place. You won't find the modern decor that has become a signature of tea shops; in fact, in true Taiwanese fashion there's not really any decor to speak of. It's a straightforward place, so the workers generally don't interact with you much and the cashier might not always be the friendliest. They're also always super busy, but I never have to wait long to get my drink--This time I literally got my drink as soon as I finished ordering it (amazing). I always, ALWAYS get their honey lemon green tea with ai-yu (#43 now i think), less sweet and with small pearls if they still have them. Even with pearls added on, it's a flat $3. It's not too sweet, there's a nice tea flavor, and their ai-yu is really good too! They're always consistent with it as well.
