The sauce inside is light goes well with the lettuce, I order the brown rice-just to make me feel like it's healthy(lol) its a good take with brown bc it holds its texture and doesn't mush. I was at Ala Moana so decided to grab a bite at the food court where Shirokiya used to be. Noticed a familiar dish so decided to try Teppanyaki Farmer and ordered their steak roll. Some have mentioned that this is the same owner from the old Tae's Teppanyaki. I've been a fan of Tae's from when they operated their food truck then opened their own place on Makaloa. I think it's been a couple years since they closed down. When I got my plate the presentation and portion looked the same as I remembered it. They even had the garlic chips and ponzu sauce. I poured the sauce over my roll as I had countless of times before. But this is where the similarity ends. Personally I think the sauce was diluted so there wasn't much citrusy taste and the steak lacked seasoning. But it has been a while so I could be mistaken. Overall it was ok. HOWEVER, the kalbi gave me food poisoning. It was the worst case of food poisoning that I had ever experienced in my life. I was in so much pain all night. As I told my friend this story, she said she has only gotten food poisoning once and that it was from this place's burrito. Advice: check your product expiration date and make sure the meat is stored at correct temperatures. This is my husband and my favorite go to when we head out to the beach park. We love the Short Rib Ribeye Burrito Wrap. It used to be affordable for us to get one each but our recent trip we noticed prices went from like $13 to $17 each. So now we have to share one. Portion is huge so it's shareable. The meat to rice and vegetable ratio isn't that good. This time around it had more rice than anything. The meat proportions seemed less and rice made up 40% of the wrap, 30% lettuce and 30% meat. The flavors are amazing and we love the hot sauce but always opt to get on the side so we can dip the burrito in it. Plus we didn't want it soggy since we take it to go. We call our order in so that we don't have to wait too long because they don't make it till you order it so when theirs 2-3 people ahead, the wait can be at least 10-15 mins. All in all the food is great. As far as service goes, I think they could be a little friendlier. They don't really greet you when you walk up to order and they rarely even say thank you. I'd give it 5 stars if prices were a tad cheaper and they at least thank you. I know hawaii is expensive but how you suppose to support local if prices are so high. Tried here for the first time last night. First time actually hanging out at Lanai and there are a pretty diverse selection of vendors. Decided on Teppanyaki Farmer as it was different and some other folks in my group had recommended it. Got the boneless kalbi bowl after reading some reviews, had to get the egg of course. $11 bucks and change, it's Ala Moana so I won't gripe about the price. Worst part of the experience was the service, specifically the individual presenting the orders. Because the boneless Kalbi is premade they just scoop your rice. Measure the meat and the only item that has to cook is your egg. The girl for whatever reason wasn't able to give out orders as they were made but only by order number. As a result people with bowls watched them get cold on the side. Even the cooks were watching her saying the bowls were ready. Didn't matter, the girl has to go in order of receipt. It was almost amusing to watch. Maybe it's their system, who knows. On to the food. This was the worst boneless Kalbi I've had. Thin strips of meat, mediocre flavor. I'm used to nice big and nicely charred strips of meat with just enough fat to be juicy. This was not it. The egg helped to blend the flavors together. I remember the day my husband came home depressed when he found out that Tae's Teppanyaki had closed. It was his favorite lunch spot to grab a cheap plate lunch full of meat and it was like watching a melancholy teenage girl who's boyfriend had just broken up with her. He didn't cry, but I'm a heavy sleeper, so I'm sure if he quietly sobbed in his pillow at night I wouldn't have noticed. Fast forward to the return of Tae's reincarnated as Teppanyaki Farmer at the Lanai at Ala Moana. My ear still hurts from his screams of rejoice as I called to let him know they'd just opened up. It's like those two crazy kids had finally gotten back together and everything in the Universe was right again. We returned with our youngest daughter to grab dinner one day and he ordered his usual garlic steak plate, while I decided to get the boneless Kalbi bowl. The line was pretty lunch since it was 6pm but my husband was nice enough to grab our food while we waited at our table. Teppanyaki Farmer is easily the most popular restaurant in the Lanai as it's simple menu items appeal to almost everyone. It's no longer run down like the original Tae's but has a modern exterior and I love their open kitchen concept. My husband of course loved his plate and practically made out with it in front of me. Men and their steak... I will never understand. I shared my boneless kalbi bowl with our daughter who happily ate more than half of it by herself. The kalbi is sliced thin which is nice because it's easy to eat. The meat is not fatty and has a ton of flavor. I just wish they would serve it with some type of side to balance the richness of the meat. Maybe a cucumber kim chee? I think next time I'll have to order a green salad or some type of veggie from another vendor to balance it out properly. So glad this place reopened!!!! Tae's Teppenyaki closed down a while back, well here they are! New location, bigger menu and a little more pricey. They had to raise their cost with the expensive rent at Ala Moana Shopping Center. However, the extra bucks are worth it. LOCATION: Ala Moana Shopping Center in the new Lanai foodcourt. They are in the back corner of the Lanai Foodcourt. PARKING: lots of parking in this shopping center. The quickest way is to go up the keeaumoku ramp, go left and park in any of the stalls on the left. SERVICE: friendly, quick, you can watch them make the steak rolls while you wait. COST: so their prices increased from their old location, probably because of the high rent at ala Moana shopping center... but it's still reasonable. FOOD: oh those steak rolls!!!!!! So thin and tender and cooked to perfection. They have another menu items but I didn't bother to look because I was fixed on the steak roll. I'll be back again, maybe to try their other menu items. I always for there Kalbi Burrito. The burrito is so thick that if I was skinny half of it would be good enough for lunch and the other half for dinner. They serve the food fast, and the cashiers and other workers can be seen moving quickly to get your food out. I love the fact that we can see the cooks making your food, from the cooking to the plating, which gives the entire place a friendly and inviting atmosphere. I really enjoy the food!!! The steak roll is so yummy!! It doesn't look like a lot, but it really is. They do slice the roll so you don't need a knife. When you separate the slices you can see the layers...layers of steak wrapped around the potato strings. I always get the garlic chips, because they are the perfect crunch and flavor to add to the wrap. My secret is to pour the ponzu sauce over the wrap and let it sit just a little while before devouring the whole thing. Don't let the long lines deter you from trying their food. The longest line is the ordering one - you have a lot of choices - rice, sauce, how rare/cooked you want your meat etc. i haven't waited more than 10 minutes for my food yet. For the uninitiated, you can order this slices of pork or steak that's rolled up with shredded daikon on a bed of rice and side salad. I honestly don't know any other place that does it this way. It's all the rage; 6'3" 239, 2,000 in less than one year! OK maybe not lie, just withhold the qualifiers. Pet peeve: The restaurant says their meat is USDA. USDA what? All beef is USDA inspected for health safety. Most beef is graded (a separate process that determines the quality). So? The steak roll (three thinly sliced then stacked pieces of "USDA" rib eye cooked together on a flat top then rolled around somewhat crunchy potato strings) Problem 1: Dry and tough. What seems to be USDA select grade, what you'd find in the supermarket, with very little evenly distributed internal fat, is overcooked. The only things adding moisture are the cooking oil, wasabi aioli topping and splashes of the provided soy ponzu sauce. Problem 2: "Where's the beef?" As other reviewers have mentioned, the amount of beef is skimpy compared to everything else. Too much crunchy potato strings, double carbs with a scoop of rice (white selected, garlic fried also offered) and massive amount of greens. The wraps are better. More balanced protein to "stuff". Both the kalbi (thinly sliced, gently marinated beef) and kim chee pork (gently seasoned, juicy pork with cooked kim chee) work but are under seasoned and don't stand out, muted by the wrap. A more balanced amount of oily, soy garlic flavored rice, veg, and CHEESE (bizarre) rounds out the fillings. Friendly counter service. In the end, inexpensive with food court quality. It is what is. So since I had never been to The Lanai yet, I figured it was a good opportunity to catch two places at once. We came here on a recent Thursday for an early dinner. At 5pm there were just a few of us in line. Order and wait time for the food wasn't bad at all. I would say we waited maybe 10 minutes tops. We got two garlic steak rolls. One with garlic chips and the other with wasabi sauce. Both were with plain white rice instead of garlic rice. The plates come with tossed greens and a small thing of ponzu dipping sauce. So, what do I think? Meh. They shake some seasoning on the steaks, but it was was still a little bland. So were the stringy potatoes inside. In fact, I don't think the potatoes are seasoned at all. I generally don't care much for ponzu, but in this case, it did help. The wasabi sauce on my steak tasted nothing like wasabi, and the garlic chips smelled fantastic, but nothing special. The only saving grace was that the steaks were tender. It's a delicious looking meal no doubt, and I can totally see how people are allured by it, but in my opinion, the steak rolls are just "ok". We had to go to the Apple Store and on our way back to our car we were hungry and wanted to check out the food court! This food place had the longest line so I wanted to observe and to just see why! The people are working so hard to cook the food and get the nice hot food out! The cashier was very friendly to each and every person and did I mention there was a long line. While waiting in line still deciding what to get the customer in front of us turned around and said, "oh this is the best!" She went on to recommending the Cheesesteak sandwich! So we got that for my brother and I got the kalbi bowl with all the sides (garlic chips, wasabi, and spicy) my sister got the garlic shrimp bowl with garlic chips and spicy! Let me tell you this is hands down the best cheesesteak sandwich! The cheese is melted and the bread is nice soft and crunchy with just the right amount of meat and onions! The sauce that they put in on the side is like thousand island and with or without the sauce is amazing! The steak and potato roll was ok. It used to be so much better (as in the previous month). Would have been better if they got the order right. I had asked to omit the garlic chips but that didn't happen. I pointed it out to the guy when it was ready and he went behind the counter to take them out. I don't even know whether he used gloves. Gross. Since it was on salad greens, he only managed to remove about 70% of the garlic. Other restaurants would redo the order. The Au jus was also very vinegary. OK. It was my turn to pay for lunch for our weekly lunch gang. Since Eddie passed away, our gang only includes Sean, Alan & me. Traditionally, the person who pays chooses, but it seems Sean doesn't choose, so even if it's his turn, he makes me choose where. Last year, I had tried to implement a guideline that every week, we should eat someplace we had never eaten at before, but that didn't last very long. Sean is not what I would consider an adventurous eater. Although he is married to a Vietnamese woman who frequently cooks the food of her ethnicity, he will not eat Vietnamese food so that's off our weekly table of choices. And he won't eat Thai by choice, so although that is a food both Alan and I enjoy immensely, that is also off the weekly table. Anyway, Teppanyaki Farmer (TF) had been on my bookmarks list from when they opened because I liked the new, clean, Lanai food court but was a little disappointed on our previous visit when only a few vendors had opened. And I knew Sean wouldn't object. We arrived at 11:30 and placed our orders: Alan ordered the steak roll with white rice and garlic chips ($12.95) and soda ($1.50). Sean ordered the kalbi bowl with garlic rice ($9.95) and soda ($1.50). I ordered the steak roll with garlic rice and wasabi sauce ($12.95) and soda ($1.50). Ordering wasn't bad; there were only a couple parties ahead of us in line, and the woman who took our orders was efficient and friendly enough. However, the worst part about TF was waiting for the food. It took a good 20 minutes to get our food, and at times during the wait, the ordering line was at least 10 people long. TIP: don't go at noon, or you may not eat until 12:30. The food itself was just OK. It was basically 4 thin slices of beef (think shabu shabu thin), rolled up and served over potato strings. The potato strings are like thin hash browns but not brown and not hashed. You can arrange the strings into letters on your plate if you want, to spell out your mood. I could have spelled out "bland" and "tasteless" and still had enough strings to spell out many more colorless descriptors. The beef also lacked flavor, and the wasabi sauce helped a little but I kept wondering why this place was so popular. I guess it's the Yelp effect. The garlic fried rice was also just OK. It was dry, and a little brownish from the oil fry, and only had a hint of garlic. Maybe just a hint better than white rice. I know the food is fresh and made to order, but I wondered if anyone else who waited so long was as disappointed as I was. I sympathize with the grillmaster, who was busier than a one-armed man with one leg constantly trying to balance on his unicycle while flipping pancakes. They should have multiple grillmasters. I probably willl not be going back to TF soon, not because it's a new year and I am imposing the old rule again, but because the food, although decent but not truly tasty, is not worth waiting that long for. read more

I happened to be wandering around the mall at 9:40 am on a Sunday (without eating breakfast beforehand), and needed to kill some time until the stores opened. Lo & behold, I happened upon the Lanai, and Teppanyaki Farmer was open! Overall, I thought the staff was excellent, service was prompt (though I was the only customer there at the time) & the food was a good value for "mall prices." Embarrassing to say, but I didn't check Yelp before ordering, so I didn't know about their rolls...BUT as it turned out, I was more than happy with my selection, the kalbi bowl with egg. The bowl consists of (from top to bottom), 1 egg made to order, garlic chips, a thick layer of teri beef (aka thin-cut kalbi steak) with some grilled onions mixed in, and a very generous portion of garlic fried rice (or white rice if you prefer). The meat was well-cooked, tender & very tasty, with very little fat or gristle anywhere. Of course I wish the meat to rice ratio was a LITTLE higher...but their garlic fried rice is soooo good, that's actually more my hips talking than my heart, lol!! If you do order a kalbi bowl w/ egg, and want the garlic chips to stay crispy, be sure to ask for the garlic chips on the side...otherwise they'll get trapped under the egg & get soggy pretty quick. The prices are cheap, the workers are nice, and most importantly the food is bomb. The best thing I can't get enough of is the garlic chips. There's so much flavor and it compliments the kalbi nicely. They also pour some kind of sauce over the rice so there's even more flavor that makes me so happy. Don't be overwhelmed when you see a long line, it's always worth the wait and they're usually pretty fast. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a cheap steak or kalbi plate :) read more

I love this place. The original store was a hole in the wall near Palama Market by the convention center. They have moved to Ala Moana Shopping Center Mall level near Macy's. They are famous for their steak rolls. It is a lunch plate that has rib eye and potatoes inside. You can add garlic chips as topping and it tastes delicious with the wasabi sauce. There are many different items on the menu as well but I haven't tried then all......yet! I did try their boneless kalbi bowl with egg. This is a filling entree to eat. It's a big bowl with your choice of white or brown rice. It was so delicious I ate it all before I started working. The staff is very friendly and works together as a team. They are always communicating to each. Every time I go there, the employees look happy and enjoying their job. Calling all Tae's Teppanyaki fans! They are BAAACK, this time as Teppanyaki Farmer, in the new Lanai food court at Ala Moana shopping center! I used to eat at Tae's Teppanyaki when they were just a food truck in the parking lot of Don Quixote, before food trucks were all the rage and even before yelp was all the rage! They then moved to a little hole in the wall across Palama Market. When they closed, it was a sad day, apparently not only for me, but for so many other locals because now that they are back as Teppanyaki Farmer, people are flocking to them! The thing you have to know about TF, is they are known for their steak roll! It's paper thin slices of steak, cooked Teppanyaki style, rolled around raw potato "noodles", topped with garlic chips and served with ponzu dipping sauce. It's absolute heaven! It is served with either white rice or garlic fried rice and green salad. This is the thing to try if you are a first timer! They have added over menu items like steak bowls topped with a fried egg which a lot of people were ordering. I'm going to try that on my next visit! If you are a big eater, order two plates - trust me, you will want more! During peak hours, the line is pretty long, but it's worth the wait. If you don't want to stand in line, go during off hours. Great addition to Ala Moana Mall "Lanai" right by Macy's. The line to get your food may take about 5 minutes. The dish I like to order is the kalbi wrap. The wrap has rice (brown or white), cheese, lettuce and the kalbi is juicy and has an amazing flavor. It's about $13 for the wrap. I remember one time they said you have to order the wrap 30 minutes before they close. Example: if they close at 9 pm you must order the wrap before 8:30 pm. I like ordering the French fries too ($3 as side dish when ordering a main dish); the French fries are crinkle cut. I have tried other dishes such as the steak plate or kalbi bowl which is good too. Probably the best place to eat in The Lanai currently. I'm still waiting for Da Spot to open up and maybe Ike's Sandwiches, but till then if I'm hungry and on this side of Ala Moana...I'll be having my meals at Teppanyaki Farmer. Been here twice already, 2 days in a row - IT'S THAT GOOD. I don't know if it's the sauce, garlic rice, or the fact that their steak rolls remind me so much of meat jun...whatever it is, it just makes me coming back. The idea is genius, a huge rolled piece of ribeye stuffed with potato noodle fries on top of a bed of cabbage. If that wasn't enough, their garlic rice is BOMB and the tossed salad isn't bad either. The steak roll is perfectly moist and tender - pair it with the ponzu and/or spicy sauce and it's HEAVEN. I think the sauce is necessary to have, cause without it, it just wouldn't taste the same. The spicy sauce tastes like the spicy mayo they put on sushi...that's probably why I like it so much. I also like how the bed of cabbage on the bottom just soaks up the leftover sauce in the end and I can finish it with the garlic rice. One plate is just enough to keep me full. Couple things I could see an improvement on is their service/wait during peak times. I had to wait 30 minutes my first time here and I did notice a difference in my steak roll from when they were busy and not. My steak roll portion was disappointing and it was not presented well when they were busy. I went again during an off time and it was much better. I also think that $13-$14 for a plate lunch is a bit expensive to eat on a regular basis...which is a shame because I don't think I can afford coming here often for a meal. read more

Here's my opinion of it... 1. The steak roll make look like a mountain aka huggggggge but it's deceiving. Let me remind you it's a called a roll where string potatoes is wrapped with the steak meat. The steak meat is super thin I mean razor thin, so the amount of meat you actually get is not that much. On top of that they lay the steak roll on a bed of lettuce which raises the meat above the rim of the plate making it look humangous. 2. If your not a fan of either ponzu, wasabi, or any type of spicy sauce...I'd recommend you not coming here because without those dipping sauces the steak roll is super bland and not tasty at all. 3. When they say your egg will be over "easy". They really mean over "hard". I wonder what sunny side up means to them . If it wasn't for the cashier being great at customer service and giving my little daughter a balloon, my evening would've been ruined. Do not be afraid to go into the corner of the Lanai Food Court! One of the best places to grab lunch or dinner is most def Teppanyaki Farmer. This is my go-to spot whenever I'm on the Macy's/Target side of Ala Moana. And I ONLY get the Steak Roll plate with garlic chips with a splash of Siracha with two scoops of excellently made white rice (trust me, rice snob here). For me, this is quite possibly the best meal. Don't get me wrong, there are many great options at Lanai Food Court these days...but I can never seem to get myself to try anything else. The Steak Roll Plate has my heart. I remember the days when a very similar place was located near Don Quixote. I also remember the day I found out it that place had closed and I would never be able to have the steak roll with shredded potato over a bed of lettuce ever again. Talk about shock and devastation. But, I am all better now because Teppanyaki Farmer has brought me back to bliss haha....nah but for real, if you are checking out the Lanai Food Court, I highly recommend getting a Steak Roll Plate. Highly recommend this place to any steak lover. I ordered the steak roll which was thinly sliced steak over tossed greens with 2 scoops and ponzu sauce. The flavor of the steak was so savory to the last bite and the only regret I have is that I didn't order more because honestly, it wasn't as filling as I hoped it would be. Might try the New York strip next time because that looked bigger. The tossed greens didn't come with any dressing, so I just poured the remaining ponzu sauce on it and it sufficed. Random place I probably wouldn't have found, but my wife ate there before and she recommended even though she's not a big steak eater. read more

I'm so excited that Tae's is back! They have a new name and are located in the Lanai in Ala Moana Shopping Center. They still have the same signature steak and pork rolls wrapped around shredded potatoes. I will say the portions have decreased. They have expanded their menu and also have garlic fried rice as a starch option. Get the garlic fried rice instead of white rice. You won't regret it. The pork roll is my favorite! And you must get it topped with garlic chips. Seriously one of the best meals I've eaten. The prices are a little higher but makes sense since they're located in the mall. My husband has been a fan of this business for many many years (food truck days) until today!! Today we bought 2 plates,, and for all of you who love this place you have to admit no matter how much you love this place you need a lot of that sauce!!! We frequently visits this ala Moana food booth and had paid for the extra sauce!! (.50) However today I simply took my plate back up to the counter and ask for more sauce,, I was turned away and said I had to pay for the sauce. the girl at the counter was the definition of the word "rude " she rolled her eyes and shrugging her shoulders at me!! Did I mention that my husband has been a fan of this business for a long time!!! This was the first time I've ever asked for an extra sauce!!! I probably would have ended up paying for the sauce but because of her bad attitude I asked for a refund!!! She begin telling me as she continued rolling her eyes at me that she was just a worker !!! She took my plate and threw it in the garbage can right in front me and turned around and shrugged her shoulders at me, again,,,!!! I explained to her ,,, that she probably should have consulted a manager with this issue! Before she did that!! She just threw away a $14.00 plate in front of a customer for the cost of a .50 cent item!! So not only did she waste a plate of food, she also lost a great of what would have been a lifetime customer!!!! I wish I could give this review a minus rating!!! Oh Tae's! How I've missed you from across the street of Palama :( their sukiyaki was soooo good, but they didn't bring it with them with this location. It's okay though! I love their steak rolls also. I always used to get it with both garlic chips and wasabi and dip it in ponzu. The refreshing sting of the nose from wasabi was the perfect amount. At the new location, they provided two more options than before, spicy sauce (like a spicy ahi sauce) and garlic rice! Those two new things were exactly what I got, and they were amazing! I'm so glad they have garlic rice. It also has some onions in it. I asked for no salad with my plate, but I did not expect them to give me a full bed of garlic rice in return. I thought I was going to get two scoops! This sold me. I highly recommend getting the steak roll with spicy sauce (or both garlic chips and wasabi) with ALL GARLIC RICE. All the meals are prepared fresh on their tappenyaki hot plate. The food is very tasty and it comes with either white or brown rice. Each dish also has a side of salad; of which it's salad dressing is a slightly spiced thousand island. I always get the Beef Philly Cheesesteak sandwich or the New York Steak on brown rice.
