Broth is nice and well seasoned- not too strong, not too oily. Pork is well cooked but they only gave two! What is this, ramen for ants?? The rest of the bowl was fine, with al dente noodles and a decent egg. I think overall was not bad but the fact that they skimped on the pork was not a good look. Very solid ramen spot! I stopped by after a workout class nearby, and got the Teppen spicy ramen and the gyoza. The broth was flavorful and rich, and the noodles were nice and chewy. The takoyaki had very little tako (octopus). It was mostly dough and there was too much sauce. Almost overpowered by the sauce really.  The ramen itself was good. We had 3 different types - the spicy trepen, the shio and the shoyo. The tonkatsu flavor is the most savory with the shoyu but they all tasted good. The broth is not too thick and not too thin, the eggs are cooked perfectly half boiled - though you have to eat fast because the longer you let it sit, the more cooked it gets.  The salmon don was ok - hard to mess up salmon but the rice was a little too vinegary.   I think if you come here, just focus on the ramen because that really is the highlight and strength of the restaurant. My husband and I came here for lunch on a Sunday and got seated right away. The service is very quick and you get your food really fast. We got the teppen spicy and teppen shio ramen and my favorite of the two was definitely the shio ramen. The broth was superrr flavorful and I love the noodles they used. The spicy ramen was just okay imo because the broth was too overpowered by spice but it wasn't spicy at the same time. Each bowl was a regular portion size and the pricing is typical nyc. Overall, thought the place was decent and I would only recommend coming if you were in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. But for ramen, it's pretty good! read more

Ramen isn't always on the top of my list for food cravings but Teppen wasn't bad! We ordered the Teppen Shio, Teppen Spicy, and their limited quantity of Dan Dan Ramen. The broth for each of the soups were similar but had a slightly different taste at the same time. I got the Teppen Shio, which wasn't too rich and creamy and also not too salty. Sadly it only came with 2 slices of pork, but was overall just the right amount of food. If you're looking for a quick ramen fix, Teppen would be a good place to try. The service was decent, they didn't bother us too much which is what I prefer. When we were done though, it seemed like they were rushing to get us to leave, as they cleaned up our dishes like 5-10 minutes after they gave our card back to sign off on the tip. I thought that was a bit weird especially since the restaurant wasn't full and usually servers clean up the dishes while you ask for the check. Besides that, the restaurant was kind of small and was located below street level, so if there is a handicapped person or if you have a large stroller for a child, it'll be a bit hard to go down the stairs. I personally wouldn't come here again since I'm not the biggest fan of ramen but it was worth a try. read more

I came here for lunch with a group of 3 people on a Saturday afternoon. It was rainy so it was perfect for a hot bowl of ramen. We were looking for a ramen place since we were in the Midtown East area. This was the closest ramen place and the reviews looked good on Yelp. My friends and I ordered the takoyaki, the miso ramen, the spicy shio ramen, and the teppen spicy ramen. The takoyaki was hot and fresh but not much sauce. The ramen broth was flavorful and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The spicy ramen was not really spicy. Prices were average for the area. However, the service was very slow and the waitress seemed to not want to serve us. Also, I only got one chopstick instead of a pair of chopsticks? I don't think that's ever happened to me before. an uninspiring ramen spot that is a bit expensive for what you get. both the food and inside decor were forgettable. i found the ramen broth weirdly creamy instead of light as with normal shio and the shio taste wasnt strong. the egg was also fully cooked through like a regular boiled egg. chashu was ok and I liked that the black fungus was topped dry but the only other topping was scallions. in an age where ramen places dot every few blocks in manhattan, its hard for me to think of a reason to visit this place unless the location is convenient for you. read more

Teppen Spicy (2/5): The broth was very flavorful and appreciated the saffron sprinkled on top. However, everything else lacked in this ramen--there's only half a soft boiled egg and ONE thin slice of charsu pork, which was terribly dry and hard!! This is somewhat of a hole in the wall; it didn't seem to have too much seating, but my group of four didn't have any trouble getting a table around 6:15pm for dinner. I ended up ordering the shoyu ramen which had a rich broth and these straight, more firm, noodles. I did appreciate the flavor of the soup-- it was a bit heavier and fattier than I'd like it to be, but for a ramen broth it was pretty standard. As some others have been saying, the noodle to broth ratio was off-- though I appreciated the amount of noodles I got, I definitely would have preferred more broth to go with them. Jury's still out on whether or not I liked the straight noodles, but I'm going to say they didn't really detract or add to my overall experience. They were just a little different! I didn't grab a photo of it, but we also ordered the fried tofu as an appetizer. It was really lacking that crunch that you look for in this dish, which made it regular tofu. I do love regular tofu, but not when I'm expecting that crisp of the classic fried tofu dish. I wouldn't recommend getting this one. I probably wouldn't come out of my way to come here again but on a scale from 1-10, I rate this decent. read more

I would've liked a bit more umami flavour from the miso, but otherwise this was great and not too salty. I also ordered the gyoza and karaage. The gyoza was good, but not super memorable. We ordered the fried shrimp shumai, which was mostly dough and lacked tenderness, served with soy sauce--a strange choice, as fried shumai is typically paired with sweet and sour sauce. It feels like common sense is missing here. We also ordered two ramen dishes, which were even more disappointing. While the noodles had a good, chewy texture, the soup ruined the experience. It tasted artificial, like something from a chemistry lab, with no real flavor and heavy on MSG. On Friday January 31, @8:30 pm I entered Teepen Ramen ALONE well dressed from The Winter show, and ordered ONE teppen miso ramen and one appetizer fried potatoes . I'm eating my meal no complaints, the waitress tells me "they are closing soon (10pm says the sign on the door) and wants me to pay now. I pay the $34.00 on my credit card , as a party of 4 people enter the restaurant , and 2 sets of couples enter the resturant. I ask for change to tip her in cash, She returns with the change, I'm eating my food and she asks me " Am I finished tipping"?" I drop my chopsticks and pay her to get her out of my face. There was no reason to rush me, I ordered 2 items and I already paid the tip could wait. I am eating my meal. Never again will I return to that place. I was annoyed and embarrassed. Amazing ramen restaurant. Teppan has super late hours which is perfect when you're hungry late at night. We came here around 1am. There was only 1 waiter who was running around setting tables, taking orders, bringing food - so he was super busy. Took us a while to finally get seated, but then ordering and receiving the food came pretty quickly after. The ramen was delicious. Perfect soup - not too salty yet flavorful. I really enjoyed the entire bowl, my friends drank all the soup too. I think this might be one of my FAVOURITE places in the city. I don't think the restaurant is normally cash only, but the night we went their machine was probably not working. I loved everything about this place. Lately I've been eating out by myself and I enjoy it. I wasnt the only one either. I felt comfortable. This was one of the best ramen spots. It's a cold windy New York evening, and all we wanted was soup! Eureka! She found one that was 4 blocks from where we staying at the Pierre in Central Park. Teppen is a hole in the wall Japanese Ramen, where you had to go down a basement to get to the restaurant. Once you open the door to this tiny, quaint establishment, you are immediately annihilated by the delicious smell coming out of the kitchen. We arrived a little after 800PM, so the place was still packed with dinner crowds, but we were able to find a corner table. We poured over the menu, and pondered what to order, since it all looked delicious. I went with their vegetarian ramen. The broth was made of soy milk, which was rich in flavor (I asked for extra broth to take back to the hotel) the noodles were egg free, and handmade. The ramen was topped with 2 crispy fried tofu, bamboo shoots, mushroom, chili oil, mixed salad, scallions. My date opted for their fried rice, which had bits of char shu pork, bamboo shoots. It must've been delicious as well, since her bowl was clean. She also had the mango mochi, which was delicious! It was a far cry from the frozen mochi you would get at your local supermarket. The freshness of the mango, and the thin layer of gluttonous rice was a perfect ending to a delicious meal. Highly recommended when you're in Manhattan. read more
