Thai at Main Street is a great choice for when you're in the mood for some good Thai Food. We stumbled upon this place a few months ago when going to a play at the DPAC. The ambiance is casual yet welcoming. Like many places they are short staffed but they make an effort to quickly acomódate you and get you seated. We ordered the Fried Tofu for our appetizer of which was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the sweet chili peanut sauce is amazing! For my main dish I ordered the Spicy Eggplant. The rich flavor of the spicy Basil sauce makes this flavorful dish a keeper! This is our third time here and will definitely keep coming back. Had a pretty good dinner at Thai at Main Street over the weekend. Arrived around 6:45 on Saturday evening and the restaurant was pretty quiet. Only a few tables were filled with people dining in but a steady number of people were coming in to pick up takeout orders. The ambiance of the restaurant is simple and comfortable inside with plenty of seating (no outside dining available). Really enjoyed the fresh rolls; they were extremely fresh indeed, crunchy and refreshing filled with shrimp, pork and raw veggies. The sauce that accompanied the rolls was out of this world! They were our favorite part of the meal. I ordered the Pad Thai and added chicken to the dish. I did ask for no peanuts, but unfortunately my Pad Thai was served with peanuts. The dish was good and the portion was generous. My girlfriend ordered a noodle dish and asked to substitute the broccoli (she can't eat it) for eggplant but was immediately told they do not substitute anything so that was a disappointment. We weren't big fans of the shrimp & pork dumplings as the won ton coating was basically peeling off and the meat mixture was a little tough; like an over cooked mini meatball. They were a bit awkward to eat as we were unable to pick them up with chop sticks. The meat was tasty and seasoned well though. Pricing was reasonable, service was ok and we received our food promptly. Didn't quite knock our socks off but overall our experience was pretty good. I wanna start off with the area the restaurant is located in. It is a really fun place to walk around with friends or someone special before grabbing dinner here. When you walk into the restaurant, it has a very open area with plenty of seating. The staff was very kind and responsive. The food came out surprisingly quick for what we ordered. I ordered Fried Tofu and Spring Rolls for apps and both of them were overrated. The tofu was kind of dry. Only thing that made it eatable was the sweet n sour sauce that came with it. The spring rolls tasted like any other spring rolls. Nothing stood out about them. I ordered Drunken Noodles while my friends ordered Pad Thai (both with tofu since we all are vegetarians). The drunken noodles were good and a very big serving (1 dish will feed 1). I feel like they did not have enough noodles compared to the vegetables. I tried the pad Thai from my friends and it was wayyy better. If you have the option I'd pick the Pad Thai over the drunken noodles. Beware of spice level. I got medium and it was still hot. One good thing about this place it is was cheap. For 2 apps and 4 main dishes we paid 18 dollars each so it is a bank for your buck. Lastly I would not take home leftovers if possible. A friend and I happened upon this yummy eatery because the place we were originally trying to go was closed. Honestly, I'm so glad it was--Thai at Main Street was awesome! We both ordered a lunch special--pad Thai for her, massaman curry for me--and were pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes for the price. Lunch specials were about $10 each and included a clear noodle soup, which was yummy! I also decided to treat myself to a Thai iced tea, which was deliciously flavorful without being overly sweet or diluted by cream. This is probably the worst "Thai" food that I had in the US. The papaya salad had absolutely no flavor in it. The tom yum soup was like a slightly chilled and watered down gross tomato soup. No Thai flavors- no galangal, no lemongrass, no spicy, no nothing. Just ew. The Drunken noodles was super americanized and sweet so that was find. I'm surprised by some of the other low ratings, because I thought the food at Thai At Main Street was incredible. I had dinner with my mom here and ordered spring rolls and the massaman curry with tofu, while she got the green curry with tofu. She really enjoyed her food, and I really enjoyed mine. The curries were flavorful, the tofu was soft, and the spring rolls were awesome. The service was also extremely friendly, and there was hardly any wait for our food after we ordered. Pricing is also very reasonable - dinner for 2 came out to less than $30. I highly recommend this restaurant and will be sure to return! read more

The food is very tasty but most of the folks in our group struggled with the heat. When you order on-line, the choices are Hot, Medium, and Thai Hot, in that order. Is medium hotter than hot on this scale? Whatever the situation, mild is not an option. We all ordered medium thinking it was the mildest option and a couple folk entered a note asking for mild, but we all ended up with some pretty spicy food. This worked for me but everyone else was sweating. I wouldn't have wanted it much hotter because the heat would have started to overpower the flavors. I got the spicy eggplant with tofu which was delicious. The tofu was fabulous, the eggplant was soft without entirely falling apart, and the red peppers were cooked while still having a hint of crunch. I like a high rice to veg/sauce ratio, probably from my days living in Sri Lanka where they eat rice and curry, not curry and rice, plus it helps with the heat. We also got the tofu appetizer which was super crispy and was probably two dozen cubes of tofu, plus the vegetable spring rolls which were good and pretty standard. The spring rolls had a good crisp and the dipping sauce was a little sour. As eggplant goes, I prefer the crispy eggplant at other Thai restaurants I've had, but the sauce was tasty and used what was left in a new dish the next day. I didn't eat the shrimp spring rolls but they were a big hit with everyone else who sweated over their Pad Thai. It seems like they would rate the Pad Thai average. We had a little trouble ordering delivery on-line on a phone but getting a pick-up order placed on a computer was not a problem. Website says they deliver but we were .9 miles away and somehow outside the delivery zone, so who knows. The food was really good, but because I've had better, I can't in good conscience give it the "as good as it gets" five star rating. However, if they had clearly marked vegan options and advertised veganizable dishes, I would bump them up to 5. Thai food is tough - you never know where the fish sauce and shrimp paste might be lurking, so clearly marked menus are everything. read more

My wife and I were looking for a local Thai place in Durham and decided to check this one out for the first time! In short, this will be our go-to dine-in and take-out Thai restaurant from now on! The Good: 1. The ambience is modern. With social distancing of course, the location had a good vibe that separates itself from many other Thai restaurants in the area, which tend to be geared toward takeout. 2. The food itself was plentiful and flavorful, at reasonable prices. The red curry was fantastic, and the drunken noodles were some of the best I've had. 3. Service was outstanding. Our server came to our table at key points of the meal to ask how everything was progressing! The Bad: 1. I'm knocking off half a star because while the chicken in the curry was food, there were some pieces that were chewy/over cooked. 2. Upon being seated, immediately offered beverages of our choice and presented with a menu. Ordered several dishes with a couple of appetizers (A10 THAI JERK BEEF, A4 DUMPLINGS & S2 TOM KHA) and within less than five minutes, appetizers were served nice and hot: -Thai Jerked Beef tasted great - bit on the salty side, recommend to cut back on the sodium. Less salt would not hurt the dish as the dipping sauce that came with it added some mild salty heat. -Dumplings (densley packed w/meat) were great. -Reason I rated it 4 stars was because the Tom Kha tasted watered down, needed to have more Coconut Milk to bring it up to a true Tom Kha savory taste. After all, description of the soup starts with "Coconut milk...". Brought the rest home to add more Coconut Milk. "Tasty Thai in downtown Durham" I love Thai, and my "go-to" place in Durham is typically Pad Thai on Guess Road for the combination of low price and good quality (or sometimes Thai Spoon, also on Guess Rd). Thai at Main Street is a new contender in the area, with the advantage of being downtown and therefore near many event venues, dessert places (e.g., The Parlour), etc. My family and I tried it on a Saturday night just after 6pm. Location: * Excellent. This is in or near the old Dame's Chicken & Waffles location on Main St., just a tiny bit up from Beyu Cafe. Ambiance: * Fine. A little dark but inviting. Was surprisingly uncrowded for a Saturday night downtown in Durham, but there were multiple other families or couples eating there. Food quality: * Very good. I got the pad see ewe with chicken, and it was as good as any I've had in town-- good noodle texture, good chicken, and nice presentation. My wife had the chicken with ginger sauce. It was rather mild (you couldn't really taste the ginger unless you bit one of the ginger threads), but tasty. My son tried the fried chicken curry, which was tasty with a bit of zing to it. My daughter had the beef salad, and the quality/ flavor of the beef was very good, and it was nicely tender. Service: * Attentive. We got refills on our drinks before ever running out, and they offered to bring us boxes for anything we didn't finish without us having to ask. Value: * Similar price to Pad Thai entrees (e.g., $11 for pad see ewe). The "Main Street specials" they hosted were a bit more expensive than most Pad Thai entrees but also a bit fancier. A coworker mentioned she was headed here for lunch since they've reopened and after running out of my favorite Thai/Indian Amy's frozen meals, I figured I should treat myself and support a small business while I'm at it! I ordered for pick up and went for one of their specials, the fried chicken curry. I also ordered their shrimp rolls for an appetizer. The restaurant wasn't busy at all, it's nice and clean with some cute decorations inside. My food was ready in about 10 minutes, packaged neatly to go. The shrimp rolls were alright, they are exactly what they say they are lol. Just a piece of shrimp wrapped in an egg roll wrapper and fried with chili sauce on the side. I was expecting some more things like a traditional egg roll with veggies or noodles. I wish I had been more adventurous and gotten something else, but it was still delicious. The curry was a total knockout! It was exactly what I was hoping for, perfectly creamy, sweet, savory. Lately, I've been getting more sensitive to spicy foods so I was a little nervous when I saw it was spicy. But it was literally the PERFECT amount of spice, enough to give a flavorful kick, but not enough to make you uncomfortable. The fried chicken was nice, but the breading ended up getting soggy and giving a weird texture after sitting in the curry. The chicken was a little tough, probably from being fried and then sitting in the hot broth, so I'll probably go for regular chicken or tofu next time. I was excited to try Thai at Main Street it replace what use to be Dames Chicken and Waffles. My husband and I were thrilled to see what they did with the place. They changed a lot of things and it seemed to be bigger. The parking is difficult. You may need to park a couple of blocks away and walk or if you are lucky you can park directly in front of the restaurant. Be prepared to do a short walk. When we first arrived we waited just a short period of time. And the server sat us. Once we sat down I felt the restaurant was kind of dark. And it wasn't very bright. It took a while for the servers to come and greet us too. My husband felt like his sprite was flat. Once our server took our order it didn't take long for our food to come out. I order the red curry, my husband the fish and my son the Satay chicken and fries. I loved my red curry my husband didn't like the batter that the fish was fried in and we both agreed the next time we go we are going to order a kids meal because the chicken was so delicious from the kids menu. I've only come here once so far, but I can already tell that Thai at Main will be one of my go-to Thai restaurants in Durham. Located conveniently in Downtown Durham, Thai at Main, in my opinion, serves amazingly delicious Thai food - from pad thai, to fried rice, to entree dishes, like thai basil chicken and pork larb salad. I'm so glad I found this restaurant on a whim while searching for a dinner place for my family and me, because the food blew me away. Normally, it's hard to convince my dad to eat Thai food, because he's usually not a fan. However, he fell in love with his pineapple fried rice. My mom, brother, and I also couldn't stop raving about our orders: pad thai, tom yum seafood fried rice special, and scallops with ginger sauce, respectively. We all received generous portions with our meals, not to mention we were thoroughly impressed by how welcoming our server was. Having just moved to the Raleigh-Durham area from Cleveland, I'm so glad Durham has better Asian restaurants, Thai at Main being one of them.
