Maybe I've been spoiled by Thai food prices in Rowland Heights, but I was shocked when I ordered 4 dishes and it was $50! We ordered pad Thai with chicken, eggplant basil with tofu, chicken yellow curry, and beef pad see ew. Each dish was around $12 each, which isn't expensive but kind of is for Thai food or am I just being cheap? I also dined in once before the take-out order mentioned above, but didn't pay the bill so I wasn't aware how "pricey" it was. I don't think I'd be as bitter if the food was amazing. But it wasn't. It just tasted very average. I've never had bad Thai food before so that's my scale. Don't get the tom yum soup, that was very disappointing. It's the closest Thai restaurant to where I live so I'll probably come back for take out. They take American Express which is nice. read more

I was in the mood for some Tom Kha Kai and was about to order from Thai Spice, but remember driving by this place and thought I would give it a try. Needless to say, I'm not going back to Thai Spice. The soup was fantastic. Creamy, cocunut, lemon, with a perfect kick if you like spicy but not overwhelming. Generous amount of chicken, and huge fresh mushrooms that still had some crispness. Also got the mango sticky rice. Excellent as well. Rice was well prepared (it usually gets screwed up). Unfortunately, this place was empty on a saturday night (I mean really empty) at 7pm. Since moving to California I've been craving great Thai food like crazy. We've tried a few locations in the area and found them to be sub-par at best. With the lukewarm reviews for Thai Cafe we weren't expecting much but ended up pleasantly surprised. We shared the Phad Thai, panang curry with beef, and veggie spring rolls. The Phad Thai was delicious and had chicken, tofu, and shrimp. The Panang Curry with beef we ordered with medium spice and was surprisingly quite spicy, but delicious. The spring rolls weren't greasy - they were light and fluffy. The food came out so fast that we ended up eating our spring rolls with the rest of the meal, definitely not complaining because all of the food was hot and delicious. Not to mention the portions are extremely generous so we had leftovers for the next two days. It ended up getting pretty busy for a Thursday evening and there was a large group in the backroom, so my water wasn't refilled as much as i would have liked. But it was a fast, good meal with decent service and fair prices. We will return. read more

3.5 Stars Had Pad Thai of which I have had at about 100 Thai restaurants. Better than average but nothing special. Very little spice (heat) and not a ton of flavor. It was much better after I asked them to bring out the ingredients that make the pad thai sauce. This place is delicious. I went here a couple years ago (on a date,) then decided to hold off coming back, when things didn't work out. Finally, I broke down and went back for the ever-tempting Tom Kha Kai, a soup with: chicken, coconut milk, tomatoes, and spice (chili pepper seeds). (Other ingredients are included.) My mouth was on fire, and once again back in heaven. I've also had the cashew chicken (with roasted chili) and the fried rice. This place has pretty decent food. It's standard compared to all Thai restaurants in near by vicinity. The reason why I don't like this place is that they charge you $1.25 for rice. As a fellow Asian, it's a shame. I ordered curry which is around $12 dollars and it does NOT come with rice! Are you kidding me? How are you supposed to eat curry without rice? That is NOT COOL. You're basically forced into buying rice because curry of all things should come with complimentary rice. The curry was good but I would not say that it is better than other restaurants. The food with exception of uncooked brown rice was good. Really tasty. The service was awful. So unfriendly, specially the ladies there. It was such an unhappy place. The atmosphere was negative. They were like robots who did not know any polite, kind words. One could say they were rude, but that wasn't it. They were not rude. They just didn't care that you are there to have a good time. Ordered the Pad Thai Chicken Shrimp plate. I got 2 small shrimps. Wasn't even good. Now that I think about it, I don't even remember eating chicken. The noodles were the clear fake stringy looking. The food was pretty good compared to most Thai places I've been to in Irvine. But the service is terrible. The lady was slow (it wasn't even busy), she misunderstood our order, never brought me my Thai tea until I reminded her TWICE. She obviously wasn't very good at English, which is understandable. But if you can't have an English conversation with basic food orders, maybe you shouldn't assist English speaking customers. The paying process was also extremely slow. We were the only table paying at the time, but it took us at least 10 mins to get our check back. There was clearly some kind of mishap with the payment cause she called her manager over to help her. And it took at least 5 minutes for the unresponsive waitress to get to our check request. AGAIN, it wasn't even busy. .....The food was good, but idk if I'll come back. For takeout, maybe. read more

i usually come here for lunch and it's not very busy. i love the tom yum products here! the noodle broth. they ask you for your type of noodle too! and when i ordered the chicken and mushroom tom yum soup and forgot to tell them no coconut, i told them i didn't want coconut and the waitress kindly exchanged my soup!!! great service here. Been coming here since they opened, never wrote a review until now. They've definitely improved on all aspects over the years, especially service. My most recent visit I enjoyed a Thai Iced Tea with Pad Thai, Pork Masaman, and White Rice. Would have gotten the Sticky Rice with Mango but I didn't have enough room for dessert once I got through the entrees. :( Their portions are very generous. They have a delicious Pad Thai and while the Pork Masaman wasn't the best I've ever had, it was extremely flavorful and definitely up there as far as Masaman curries go. Other dishes I've had and enjoyed at Thai Cafe include: Angel Wings Tom Kha Kai - delicious, great for sharing, and I love the presentation of it Chicken Yellow Curry Thai Iced Coffee But really I'd be confident trying any dish on the menu, they all look very good. And I've never come with someone who ordered a dish they didn't like, so that's a good sign too. Wish I lived closer, I'd go more often. It's definitely a big step above fast food style Thai, and I'm totally OK with paying the extra dollar or so to be served such tastiness in a comfortable setting. read more

Thai Cafe is a gem! I haven't been in a while, but am so glad I went back yesterday that I had it again today. I've tried a lot of different Thai restaurants and this is one of my favorites. I recommend the Pad See Ew and Yellow Curry, which have wonderful proportions of vegetables to noodles/curry. The Vegetable & Tofu curry is pretty spicy, even with mild spice, but still delicious. I'm surprised that the restaurant is hardly at capacity, but that means wait times are pretty short and the service is fast. Our server asked if we wanted more water before refilling, which I really appreciated because I always feel obliged to drink all the water, thereby filling myself up on water instead of the actual food. YUM, We went a little nuts when ordering. Thai iced tea, Massaman curry, Tom Yum Goong, Yam Nua Beef Salad, Pad Thai... Started with the soup... Flavorful, smooth, tasty. The Massaman curry was fantastic. Just a note for folks with allergies; it had peanuts in it. Not normal. But tasty. The beef salad was my favorite thing and I went to bed dreaming about it that night. The service was solid, the ambiance was fine. The only critique was their Pad Thai... It had kind of a weird flavor. They seem to use way more tamarand than I've seen in the past, and it was bright orange. Flavor just wasn't balanced. One of the limited Thai options in Irvine; not the first choice, not the last choice. The decor of this restaurant is very clean, dim, and comfortable and the service is very friendly and attentive. I think that explains the high prices for their food which is acceptable. I did, however, find it to be a little greasy for my taste but I guess Thai food is meant to be on the saucier side. The price isn't too bad at all but if I'm going to pay 15 bucks for a meal, I'd prefer to leave satisfied rather than just content. I think it's up to you to weigh it out for yourself. read more

Starting with the worst... The parking lot! Now for the good... The food. Visited this place with my mother in law and wife and we were all very happy. A hot pot to share, several curry dishes and a chicken dish my wife got. We all shared but my favorite was definitely the yellow curry. Perfectly paired with the rice and the soup. This place was nice, clean, with friendly staff tho they could be a bit more attentive. This was a nice place for a nice lunch. We will definitely be coming back. Unfortunately, there is no online menu for the place, so I cannot copy/paste what items we have had there. We've been to Thai Cafe on 5 different occasions for lunch or dinner. Everything we ordered was fresh and tasty. In particular, the Phad Thai ( we asked for spicy, but it was really about a 4 for other places), beef salad, curries and satay are standard and good - no disapointments. I see no reviews on the soups, yet, but we've tried several of them and they were very flavorful and unique. My own particular favorite is the spicy soup with the mushrooms, chicken and coconut milk - it comes in a volcano-type pot to keep it steamy hot at the table. There is a flame that shoots up in the middle of the volcano shaped pot that eventually dies down while you dine. It's a fun item to see for first-timers. Service and envorinment are very good. During a couple of our visits, we had the waitress order a few dishes for us as a "suprise" and the items that she brought were excellent! We have not been disappointed and will come back from time to time. Prices are not cheap, but they are reasonable for the amount of fresh food served. They'll bring extra limes on request. I saw people getting take-out every time we have been there. I'll definitely get some soup to go when the weather gets really cold again. read more

I've been coming here for some years now as it has been one of my places to go for Thai food in Irvine. I came in recently to grab some dinner with my boyfriend. When we came in, we were seated right away, given menus and water; it was good speedy service. We ordered the spicy chicken fried rice and the chicken yellow curry. I almost always order the chicken fried rice here! Why? It's so goood! There's a great sweetness with a hint of spice that compliments the rice so well! I only wish the sweetness would be dialed down a bit more so the heat can shine and there would be a better balance, but nonetheless still delish! The chicken yellow curry is beautiful because personally I'm a sucker for a nice, sweet curry dish. This is so addicting even after I was full, I continued to use the fork to scrape the sauce! When I get a craving for Thai food this is my go to spot to satisfy my craving. They have delicious food and great service here. I've been here for lunch and dinner on almost any given day of the week and I've never had to wait for a table to open up, which is nice since most times I come here I am starving. Their pineapple fried rice is one of my favorite dishes here, it is so flavorful and you get so much for the price. Most plates here range from $8-11 dollars but the portions and quality of the food is more than worth it for me. The parking in this plaza can be a little tough to find if you come during the weekends, but normally its not a hassle finding parking. read more
