After an absence from Cortez for four years, we looked forward to a pleasant meal at our longstanding favorite restaurant. Unfortunately, the owners retired and the new owners changed the menu so we said, what the hell, we will try Cortez Thai. My bone said danger danger to a Thai/Sushi place but it was late and we were hungry. Apparently we went to a different restaurant than most reviewers did because our entrees bore no resemblence to the pictures nor the descriptions shown in Yelp. Nor to the majority of the reviews that led us to the establishment in the first place. We had Pad Thai and the Drunken Noodles. Neither dish had adequate saucing, scant egg or veggies where indicated and cold chicken thrown in the Pad Thai the last moment before serving. Both dishes were just a pile of rice noodles likely from two large pot given the speed they reached our table. One of the poorest reviews I have ever given. I don't think this was just a bad night. Came off the freeway for the raitings. Wait to be seated kinda place. Late friday eve not so busy but still people coming in! Lovely fresh carnations at every table too. Nice!! First off the chairs are comfy with a pillow for back support! Omg after sitting driving all day it was perfect !!! Bf ordered Tom Ka soup. Perfectly balanced sweet n sour with lemon leaves to boot. Soooooo good. Nice small size to start! Thai dumplings are 4 pcs with chili sauce. Omg... full of ground up goodness and sauce great!! See pix. I also order chicken Pad See Eew.. Bf orderd Masaman Curry ( stew with beef n potatoes ) . That's his favorite. Mine ended up a bit salty but still ok. Prob will try something else next time. We came here while visiting Mesa Verde National Park. We ordered the fresh rolls, red curry with roasted ducks, and pad kee mao with tofu. Everything tasted good and the service was great. Do not drive by this place. I might have driven right past a Thai restaurant in Cortez, CO with a sneer. But our Airbnb host recommended it, so we tried some takeout. I was skeptical, because... well, I'm a snob. Maybe you're a snob too? If so, good news: you can still be a snob and eat at this place, because it is a helluva Thai restaurant. It is easily among the best Thai I've had in Colorado, including Denver. Now, don't be mistaken, it's not like the best Thai food in LA/NY/Chicago. But it is is very good, flavorful--a big step above your standard American greasy takeout pad thai joint. I wonder: is there even another contender in the category "Best Thai restaurant in far-flung Western town with a population under 10,000"? I doubt it. I bet this place is on stage every year, giving yet another acceptance speech. The fellow on the phone wasn't like "Whaddya want?" He was friendly, helpful, willing to recommend dishes as I ordered for 9 with some sides and salads. When we arrived he was equally friendly, conscientious with COVID protocols and the walk-up window. Then, instead of just tossing plastic forks and spoons into the bag that we would soon throw away, he asked "will you be needing silverware?" I was left wondering: why isn't the take-out experience always like this? One caveat, I wish I had asked for the Larb salad to be prepared medium+ or spicy. The Duck Curry could also have been kicked up a notch. Another pork dish was flavorful enough that I wasn't wishing for more spice. But.. fellow snobs... just know that Thai Cortez defaults to mild/medium--probably sensible for most "regular" people, but not for Thai snobs, like us. So, you may want to ask for "Phed" (or the other Thai words and phrases that describe tart or acrid or pungent spice with dizzying specificity). Anyway, you're going to want to drop some mispronounced Thai, just to prove you're cool and "in the know" about Thai Cortez. Put this on your list of "thing to do in Cortez". read more

Another excellent meal tonight. The sushi was good for a restaurant this far from the coast. I like sushi without sweet sauces and this was great. Superb Thai food! My nephew said this was his favorite restaurant so a bunch of us went... And he was RIGHT! Everything, from the crunchy sushi roll, to the noodles, the fish, the green curry and the chicken with cashew nuts was exceptional! The owners are Thai and had just gotten back from their yearly trip there. The service was friendly, the atmosphere is warm. It's amazing that the small town of Cortez has such great Thai food! But this restaurant is way at the other end of the spectrum -- really excellent food. My spouse had the duck salad and it was a thing of beauty, full of crunchy duck. Food--pho had a very good broth--that's what I usually look for a pho. There was generous amount of round steak. So far so good, but for the price I could've used a little more noodles. It was a large bowl price for a regular bowl... My wife said Pad Thai was good, but not great--chicken and shrimp needed some more seasoning. Since she ordered "mild" seasoning, perhaps chef was depending on some more spice for chicken and shrimp to taste better. In other words, they weren't seasoned well enough. Excellent food and excellent service. My family originally came from Thailand, so I am very familiar with Thai cuisine. The quality here exceptional. Additionally, the service was outstanding. We were seated quickly, and our food came out shortly after we ordered. The staff is friendly, and they came to check up on us often. I often joke around about Asian restaurants never coming back to the table to refill our waters... this is not the case at this restaurant... our glasses of water were never empty. Stopped in to grab something to-go as I was staying nearby and famished after driving all day. Gracious server helped me choose just what I wanted and got me water while I waited. I think I looked as wobbly as I felt! Had the Pad Pak, tofu and veggies in brown sauce. This is seriously one of the best Thai dishes I've ever had! Pad Thai is what I order whenever I go to a Thai restaurant for the first time. Their version was excellent. Flavorful and yummy. Nice presentation as well. (5 stars) Combination Pho for my wife. Did not get a chance to try her choice, but she said it was A-ok. (3 stars) Really wanted dessert, but there was none available. Don't know if that is a common occurence. A meal is never complete without dessert. Oh well. Overall, we were pleased with our dining experience at Thai Cortez. Good service and reasonably priced.
