Came here due to the reviews since good Thai food is hard to find. The food was okay drunken noddles very good but Pad Thai horrible (too much FiSH sauce) it was so bad it made me gauge and almost throw up. But the that's not the reason for the 1 star. My kids came with me and from the moment I walked in there was an attitude from our waitress (possibly the owner). It's like I brought my tow pets or something. She was so rude that when I order their meal and she brings me plastic forks and spoons and styrofoam plates for them. They are 3 and 4yrs old! Ask the customer if that's what they prefer NOT assume what you would like them to do. So tacky and very bad service!! I did not use them and told her I wanted regular plates for them! You want to own a restaurant... it's called a service and your customers did not think you gave them good customer service. It was an insult from the beginning. I was in the area with a friend and not feeling like Middle Eastern food (Dera is a great place for that in the same strip mall), so we opted for Thai based on my friend's recommendation. Like most of the places in this area, the esthetic appeal of Thai Ghang Waan is not great. I'd say it's better than some, but it definitely isn't in the "nice" category. No matter though. The food is what this experience is all about. They could be running this place out of a dark alley in NE DC and I would still be showing up. I start for those of you skimming reviews with a warning. They bring you a sample of 3 hot sauces and 1 ground spice. Please, do not be the stupid person who dredges their fried tofu in the the ground spice just because it smells yummy and not at all spicy. You will end up like me, with tears and snot dripping down your face and your mouth more on fire than that time you ate a blazin hot wing at B-Dubs. Ouch....but still surprisingly tasty. It you want to experience something that is 100% Thai, and probably something you won't have an easy time finding anywhere else, order the Som Tum Poo with the pickled blue crab. The limey, sweet, and spicy fish sauce that the blue crab and veggies are dressed in is to die for. In the words of my friend, "this should be the only salad dressing." It's amazing. The texture of raw/pickled crab that you have to chew and suck out of the shell is a little hard to get the hang of for a first-time eater, but it's well worth it. The crab is like sweet firm gelatin; so cool and so unique. The Crispy Pork Belly Ka Prow is like eating gigantic chunks of perfectly fried, uncured bacon. Combined with the sweet, spicy sauce and the fried basil, this dish is fatty perfection. Honestly, if you're a fan of pork belly, this is a bucket list dish for sure. Not a single bite is less than everything you've ever wanted from pork, and the sauce that is sparingly pooled underneath is a delicious tease to the palate. You kind of want more, but deep down know that it's just the right amount. Sometimes less really is more. If you're one of those people who insist on ordering fried rice whenever you go to an Asian restaurant (you know who you are!!), take a little detour from your, frankly, kind of boring life and try the Thai-Style Fried Rice with Soured Pork. Oh. My. Goodness. Fried rice could not be better than this. I'm not joking. I'd challenge anyone to it. People. This rice is insane. It's the perfect light and tender consistency, a little bit sweet and spicy, and the addition of the soured pork creates interesting flavor pops. A must try. Based on the reviews for this place, I went in with too high of expectations. Unfortunately, those expectations weren't meant. My boyfriend and I ordered their "famous" duck rolls, beef pad kee mao (drunken noodles), and floating market noodle soup. First, the duck rolls: imagine a fried Chinese pancake wrapped around battered-and-fried duck, scallions, cucumber, and carrots. Sounds tasty, right? Except the duck is so fried, it's dry -- they should probably use skin-on roasted duck instead. Even worse, there is a coyingly sweet sauce that the pancake is doused with -- completely unnecessary. I don't recommend you order this. The entrees were a lot better, but not great. I personally love pad kee mao more than pad thai because of the fried thai basil, high spice level, and fat rice noodles. When made perfectly (read: not oily or too sweet), it reminds me of Cantonese beef chow fun, but up a few notches. Few places get it right, though, and sadly, Thai Ghang Waan did not pass this test. Their version is oily, too salty, and too sweet. If you want good pad kee mao, go to Thai Tanic I (Dupont) or Thai Tanic II (Columbia Heights). The floating market noodle soup (often times deemed as "Thai pho") was probably the best of all the dishes. It's basically a beef noodle soup made with extra thin rice noodles, a blood-based broth (dark brown in color), beef meatballs (bo vien), liver (I'm not a fan, but you might be), tripe, thin steak, and -- the best part -- pork rinds. This soup was up to par with my favorite version at Nava Thai in terms of flavor and spice. Because this soup, while good, is so strong in flavor (read: salt), you will most likely not consume all the broth and this is probably why Vietnamese noodle soups are still superior in my mind. Do yourself a favor and order a Thai iced tea to wash it all down. Theirs is typical, but still necessary in this meal. Side note: request the spice rack when you dine at Thai restaurants for an added oomph to your meal (I appreciate the Thai chilies in fish sauce which balance out the sweetness of Thai food). If you like pad thai, then most times you'll be happy as most places get it right. If you are into more authentic Thai dishes, I would advise you to go to Thai Square in Arlington, Thai Tanic as mentioned, and Nava Thai in Wheaton. read more

I am not sorry to give this restaurant a two-star rating. Two of us came here for dinner on a Saturday night, and we decided to seat ourselves at the bar because every table was taken and no one approached us at the door. We were sitting for a couple of minutes before one worker noticed us and gave us waters. About five minutes after that, we were given menus to make our food decisions. We made them pretty quickly because, well, it's Thai food - menus from Thai restaurants are pretty much identical no matter where you go. I think it took about 15 minutes before we were acknowledged by a waitress to take our food order. We weren't asked if we wanted anything else to drink either. I also think 15 minutes is being conservative because we even said "if they don't come out in two minutes, let's just walk out." It was that bad. So, we finally got our food - drunken noodles with chicken, pork fried rice, and a Thai iced tea. The food came out in decent time, but the portions were SMALL. I've never seen such a small portion of drunken noodles in my LIFE. The flavor was alright, but I am not compelled to go back here for it when there are other (better) Thai places around. The fried rice was also just fine, nothing special. The iced tea was decent because it wasn't super sugary sweet. At the end of our meal, we were so disgusted that we didn't want dessert. We weren't even asked if we wanted it either. The waiters here need more training on how to be personable, attentive, and good marketers of the food. It seemed like they didn't realize they were working in a for-profit establishment. We got the bill, gave money, and then were forgotten about. We had to remind the waitress that we needed change. I see that several reviews mention the duck rolls. They did see appetizing, but when I see that a restaurant is "known" for basically one thing, AND it's an appetizer, that place has no gold star in my book. After seeing the amount of positive reviews for this establishment. On top of the fact of my girlfriend raving about this Thai restaurant we decided to check it out today for lunch. I have to be honest and admit Thai food is my least favorite Asian cuisine. With that being said I am very open minded to try any food. Thai Ghang Waan is located in the strip mall across from Chick- fil- a in Springfield. The waitress promptly seated us and presented us the menu. We ordered a Thai Iced tea, Duck rolls, Pad prik khing (Green beans with chicken and curry sauce), and the Sizzling steak (steak with picked vegetables with sticky rice). The Thai iced tea was WAY too sweet! I have never drank Thai iced tea so sweet ever before in my life. I know it is suppose to be sweet, but this place definitely added too much sugar (my gf and I finished ~1/2 of it). The Duck rolls in my opinion were not as good as everyone made them sound. I saw a couple of reviews stating that it would have been better without the sweet sauce drizzled on top of it and I agree wholeheartedly. The pad prik khing was my favorite dish. I really enjoyed the flavors of this dish, the green beans were crunchy and the chicken was very flavorful with the sauce of this dish. Usually I love steak dishes, but the steak here was lacking in flavor even after dipping it in the sauce (lemon with red pepper flakes) the dish came with. It was hard to chew even though the steak was cooked to a medium temperature (some pink). If I do visit this Thai restaurant again next time I won't be ordering the sizzling steak again. The food here is average, I only truly enjoyed the pad prik khing. Another reason why I am giving it a 3 star review was the only waitress serving the whole restaurant was sick (coughing). I saw her coughing multiple times into her hands and touching the plates, utensils, water cups, straws without covers pretty much everything you would expect a waitress to touch without washing her hands. Don't be fooled by the location!!! The food is on point, authentic, flavorful, portion size is large and always fresh! And the prices are standard-lower end for the area! My go to is the chicken and eggplant with extra sauce-it is soooooo good. The portion is large enough for two meals, and I always tell myself I will make two meals out of this, but it never lasts...cuz it is really that good! The duck rolls are really good, but like others have mentioned, the sauce is on the sweeter side. The owner and the rest of the staff are always super friendly and always make an effort to say hello, even if they are busy, as i come in to pick up my take out order. I'm going to say like it is. Food isn't bad but you have to watch out for some menus. I liked pad see ew with beef and floating market noodle soup. Both are above average. And lf you like liver order extra with soup. I didn't like duck rolls and pork jerkey. Duck rolls are way too sweet you can't even taste anything else. And pork jerkey is way too salty. After I left I had a MSG symptoms. They use quite a bit of MSG. So watch out. You are going to be thirsty and sleepy after a while. read more

After reading so many good reviews for this place I finally checked it out for myself. I've tried their spring rolls and duck roll for appetizers. The spring roll was pretty standard, but the duck roll is a little different. The sauce was sweet and I liked the fried skin. This was definitely a first I've seen duck rolls at a Thai restaurant. For entrees I tried their chicken pad thai, fried flounder filet, pineapple fried rice, and stir fry. The pad thai noodles were a little more chewy than I would've liked, but the flavor was good. The fried flounder was a big piece of filet (no bones!). The peppers gave it just a little kick. The fried rice had dried shredded pork and raisins which isn't that special for pineapple fried rice, but they mixed together very well. Everything here was delicious and came in a good portion. We ventured out to Thai Ghang Waan last night at 630. From all the positive ratings and the fact that my SIL's eyes light up whenever I mention TGW, I knew I was in for a culinary adventure as she is from Bangkok. We started off with Duck Rolls, Crispy Pork and Moo Satay. All were excellent, especially the duck rolls. After demolishing our apps, we moved on to our entrees which consisted of Pad Thai, Goong Gleur, Mussel Pancakes and the northern Sausage plate. It was nice that they provide a spice tray as I like it spicy. All I can say is that TWG rocks. The food was brought out hot and fresh. We almost had no room on our tables for all the plates. But again the food went down in no time, so we made room :) We finished off our delicious meal with mango and Sticky Rice. Here is my breakdown: Food: Absolutely top-notch: 5 Stars Customer Service: Excellent: 5 Stars Ambiance: Nothing too spectacular, but again you're there for the food: 3 stars Parking: A bit on the tight side, but again if you can get a spot during the face-lift of the plaza your ready for a dining adventure: 3 stars Seating: Not bad, but I see it getting cramped when they are really busy: 3 Stars Price: A little above your average Thai restaurants, but who cares with 5 star food Overall, I am going to make TGW a normal stop now. Sadly this is not the hidden gem it used to be. I agree with the other reviewers that after the ownership/management changed, the food is nowhere near as good as it once was. We ordered our usual crispy flounder, floating market, nam tok and crispy pork belly with chinese broccoli. Crispy flounder - overfried and dry as f**k (for $45 you expect better, I'd rather have a filet-o-fish). We told the waitress and she just came back with "the owner said sorry". I was really hoping this was the pinnacle of Thai Food places in the area, but I was left craving for more and wondering, how did I yelp so poorly. ATMOSPHERE: Nice decor...definitely a heating issue as there were heaters located near the bar, but the rest of the restaurant was freezing. FOOD: I did not care about the cold... but I really wanted to be WOW'ed and I was not. The Panang Curry and Pad Thai were ok and I definitely "experienced better" hence my 2 star review. The appetizers lacked flavor. The satay was bland and the chicken was tough... I mean prison tough. I noticed the same thing in my main entree. Tasty Thai take-out in 5 minutes! I ordered the pad kha na with scallops. Tasty and garlicky with spice on the side to make it as spicy (or not) as desired. Could have used a few more scallops - there were only 6 relatively small ones. But plenty of Chinese broccoli. Came here yesterday with my son & his grandmother for the first time. Its definitely a hidden gem! The food tasted delicious. We orderd Chicken Sautee, Spicy Beef Basil, Duck Curry, Spring Rolls, and Steak. It was all so good! (The spicy beef basil was a bit salty, and when we told our waitress she seemed to not care at all). First visit. Thanks to previous Yelpers, we knew to ask about the Thai menu. We ordered two items from the regular menu, and two items from the Thai menu. From the regular menu, we got the duck rolls and papaya salad. From the Thai menu, we got crispy rice salad and a beef noodle soup. The duck rolls were a huge portion size for an appetizer, and drizzled with a very sweet sauce. At first I thought it was too sweet, but it actually balanced the other dishes. The papaya salad was medium spicy and as good as I've ever eaten. The best two things that we got were the crispy rice salad and beef noodle soup. The crispy rice salad was excellent. It was smaller portion than Bangkok Golden, but very tasty. The beef noodle soup was hearty and delicious. The broth was dark and mellow. Very nice. The server was extremely nice and patient as we tried to order items that weren't listed on the regular menu. Slow customer service and when they finally come to your table, they want to hurry you to order. We got pad thai and cashew chicken. Oh and duck rolls for an appetizer. Duck rolls sauce was wayy too sweet but edible. Cashew chicken tasted like orange chicken with so much fish sauce. Horrible I spitted it out. Pad thai- noodles were overcooked and extremely saucy. Alot of msg. I started getting bumps on my face so stopped eating. Customers kept coming in and I didnt understand why. Foods are very bad and salty. And customer service wasn't good. We waited at least 15-20 minutes trying to anyone's attention. My husband just went to the kitchen area to grab somebody to get a check. No one was on the floor most of the time doing other work. One of the better places for Thai food around the area. The restaurant is a little on the older side and it is a little dark inside with the dark carpets and the dark paint job. The food here is pretty standard. I usually get the beef Pad See Ew with extra egg and my wife usually gets the chicken Pad Thai. Both dishes always hit on those Thai flavors and the service is usually pretty quick. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a new Thai place. read more

I really enjoyed this place, it's one of the better Thai restaurants in the area. I went there with a couple friends and we ordered different dishes. The Duck Roll was really good! It came in one big roll cut in halves. It was pretty similar to Peking Duck but the duck was also crispy. Panang curry was also pretty good - the sauce was a little too thick I think. This little strip mall is full of little pleasant eateries, including this restaurant. Thai Ghang Waan is a small out of the way place that is serving up some pretty good Thai food. My co-workers and I stepped in here and had a very pleasant experience. What I notice about the food here is that the flavors are very robust and hearty. Lot of other places seemed to have been Americanized and misses the bite that Thai food is known for. It's not enough to have the ingredients but to cook and flavor properly. This place does it right. Spring rolls came out piping hot, my Pad Kee Mao was nice and flavorful. The Panang curry was really rich and spicy and ever so tasty. My friend's soup and salads were very well presented and he reported that he too was pleasantly surprised at the spiciness (in a good way) and how flavorful the broth was. Food came in about 30 minutes or so.The mussels alone were amazing but with the slurp of the broth that it sits in is oh so flavorful. This is a nice small family-owned restaurant with an inviteful decor and ambiance. The chairs, booths, and bar give a contemporary design feel to it. Although, there is construction going on right now, I can envision what it would be like without the extra noise. There is an extensive menu offering many authentic Thai dishes. They all sounded tasty, unfortunately, I was there for lunch and my appetite is not as large as it would be for dinner. I ordered Red Curry w/Duck. It was mixed with Tomatoes/Green Bell Peppers/Red Bell Peppers/Onions/Pineapple/Basil/Coconut Cream. The dish was served with Jasmine rice and the ingredients all melded together provided a satisfying creamy and flavorful dish. The pineapple brought the sweet acidity the dish needed, and it was great to mix with the rice. I had to order two bowls of rice because I did not want to waste such flavorful sauce. They had previously ordered Thai food from Thai Ghang for my sister's graduation party, which I did not make the connection until dining at the restaurant. Though the restaurant is small and hidden in a strip mall, it was fairly busy when we were there on a Sunday for lunch. We had friendly and efficient service throughout our lunch. The food was good too and came out quickly. We ordered the Pad Thai, Vegetable Pad Seewe, and Panang Curry. I really liked their Panang Curry. Maybe I just ordered the wrong dishes. Perhaps it was just the wrong day. Everyone loves this place. It's pretty, the staff is friendly, the prices are average and the menu is interesting. I tried the crispy fried quail appetizer and duck in red curry with tomatoes and pineapple. The quail was good, maybe fried a little too long but it tasted ok. The sauce was really just pureed green chills and there was no way I could use it. I tried a little and paid dearly for the next 15 minutes or so. It needed something so if you can't eat it with that it's just a piece of pretty small dried quail. I had to wait for both my dishes while my wife received all three of hers. I was, of course, hungrier than she was and watched her eat her three courses while I waited for the quail. The curry did eventually come out before she finished eating. It had a very deep pool of fat floating on the top. I hope it was duck fat and not some kind of oil. It was a little much. I liked the flavor of the curry for the most part but was worried about what kind of fat this was. The duck breast was dried out. The best I have is crispy on the skin, tender and juicy on the meat. This was neither and not really all that tasty. There were lots of little pieces of bone and cartilage land mines as well which I never appreciate. I eat this dish a lot and this wasn't a good example. I really might be tempted to go back and try something else except nothing my wife ordered looked very good to me either and that rules out 5 menu items I wouldn't bother with. So I may be being a bit unfair in this review just because my heart was set on Vietnamese... Regardless, couldn't find a menu online so I went there. Duck rolls: Good. Skip the duck sauce it's too much and you don't need it. Drunken noodles: The beef is large pieces, it's not as saucy as others. I asked it to be spicy. Lady pushed back "It's not a spicy dish" me: i know, but can you please make it spicy? I was unexpectedly pleased by the heat. That said, the noodles were overcooked and meh. Frankly though, I think the beau thai is hard to beat when it comes to their drunken noodle... Saved the green curry for the next day, so my review isn't on FRESH green curry. My first thought was I liked that they gave me extra chilis to put on it and it looked delish. Oh. my. gawsh. About to start coming here more often! My mom is Thai and loves yen ta fo noodle soup. Brought her here to try theirs and she approves! Everything we ordered tasted great. We started with Thai iced tea and the duck rolls. Wow, can't believe how good those duck rolls were. Then we had the roasted duck curry and the pork with garlic and Chinese broccoli. Both meals were great. I especially loved the curry, not every Thai place gets the flavor right but they definitely did. The service was also really good. It was quick and they were polite. Definitely recommend this place! This is an edit to what I reviewed above: I bumped my review down to 4 stars just because we order pick up and didn't like the pad Thai and the yellow curry as much as the stuff we got on our last visit. The yellow curry flavor was a little too sweet and the chicken chunks a little too big. I still really like this place though. read more

My first time was following a friend here and I loved the pink noodle soup! We also got the pickled blue crab and it was delicious. Probably not for the easily squeamish though! I forgot to rate it after but would have given it 5 stars. I went back twice more and the second time was not how I remembered but still pretty good...maybe 4 stars. The third time was not so good...the taste was different and it tasted heavily of the sweet chili sauce as if someone ran out of time and picked up a bottle of Trader Joe sweet chili sauce and poured out in the base soup. It was not as deliciously savory that day (I could not tell the first time that it was made from the chili sauce) and it may be a while before I venture back to see if the original taste comes back.
