Spring Roll & Salad with Peanut Sauce
Sam R.

Thai select is my go-to with my family & friends. We are regulars. The food is always great, everyone's nice, and the interior is cute. We especially love the lunch specials which get you a salad, roll, & main. The spring roll is so fresh and their peanut sauce is so perfect. I'm not usually a peanut butter guy, but this sauce is like a drug. It's great on the salad too, but their lemon dressing is great too. I love their ginger pad thai, black pepper beef (dinner), and 3-mushroom special among others. Their veggies have a great crunch, so I usually get extra. The sauce in the entrees is so flavorful, I often will be scraping the last of it up! Another thing to try if you have room, is their homemade Coconut Ice Cream. It's my absolute favorite coconut ice cream of anywhere! Again, I'm not a peanuts on ice cream kinda guy, but it works here with a good contrast. I always leave satisfied!

Pre-Christmas gathering between family and friends, 6 in total. Needed a spot between Bedford and Granbury, that had vegetarian options. Thuy's sleuthing came up with Thai Select. My first impression, when we walked in, was not very good. The small, brightly lit, eating area was a collection of 2-tops and 4-tops. It was not very cozy. Yuk. When asked, "How many?", our replay was "six." A puzzled look came over the woman's face, and then she said, "Come this way." She led us to an adjacent room, nicely lit, with larger tables. OK, things are looking up. Thuy and I sit down, order two hot teas (choice was Green or Jasmine) and start looking over the menu. So here's what we ordered. I can only comment on what I ordered, my go to for any new to me Thai place: Pad Thai w/ tofu. Unlike other menu items, there was no indicator that heat level can be requested by number, so I asked our server to make it spicy. I like my pad thai spicy! It was good, a little on the sweet side, as it sometimes is. Also not as much as tamarind sauce as I like, but perfectly acceptable. Ok, other items at the table: Pot Stickers (fried), Som Tum Salad, Pad Key Mao, Panang Curry, Teriyaki (Chicken), Three Mushrooms (from the vegetarian section), and a Goon Ob Woosen. This last dish, "Goon Ob Woosen", was ordered by Thuy, and needs a bit of a description: "Jumbo shrimp with glass noodles, shiitake mushrooms, peppercorns steamed in a clay pot." Very good, and if you like ginger, this is the dish for you. The only complaint I heard was that the Som Tum (Papaya Salad) could have been spicier. This was from my nephew who, like me, likes things pretty spicy. I regret that I did not try it. Bottom line here is that it was a great meal, with friendly service, and we did not feel rushed to get out (even though closing time was fast approaching). Note: Prices on the on-line menu were not quite what we paid. Some of the actual prices were a bit higher. Just pointing this out so that maybe the IT guy can do an update. That being said, prices were very reasonable, considering we are still getting over the shock of food prices in CA.

The TOM KHA KAI is so good. It's a must if you dine in. The staff were very attentive and we felt very welcome. The portions are tasty and the thing I love most about this place is how different each plate is.

We have stopped by for lunch and dinner and both times were very delicious and the staff was great! Such a relaxing atmosphere. I have tried a few dishes, but plan on trying all of them! So much flavor and great spice!!!

Thai Select is a popular spot for good reason. We've been eating there for years, as it, Thailicious and Spice, (it's sister restaurants) were some of the first Thai restaurants that were located in south Fort Worth. They do standards such as fried rice dishes very well, but it pays to explore the rest of the menu. They have a wonderful Spicy Beef Salad, but my favorite dish is Black Pepper Beef, a stir fried dish served on a hot platter. They also have a lunch menu that we take advantage of when we can.

Been here twice, once dining in and once to go. Unique location in a strip mall. Inside is a bit odd with a separate dining area that was closed the time I came in to grab to go. Service was so so when I dined in, one of the younger guys bringing water and taking drink orders had the most whatever lackadaisical attitude. I wasn't offended but was worried the guy might fall asleep from apathy mid stride. On my to go order they gave me no utensils in the bag so uh yeah, thanks for that. Food wise it's pretty good, firmly in the good not great category for me. Nothing to write home about but I'm also not mad at taste and portion. Fried tofu was a touch too well done. Bacon wrapped scallops were pretty good but pricey ($9). Chicken satay was lackluster, somewhat tough and at $8 a serving was pushing it. I'd eat here again, but I'm probably going to try out some other places first.

My mom recommended we order food from here. We ordered a variety of food for 6 of us. When we arrived to pick up our food the staff was welcoming and nice. The restaurant was clean and was located in a plaza with parking. The food was delicious. Some of the dishes we made it spicy level of 2-3. The won ton soup was really good and spicy.

Some things stood out as different today: - It was desolate on a Thursday at noon, just 2 couples eating - The food is different - see below The good? Service was fast. There were 4 male workers hanging out, ready to serve us. So that was nice. Also, the app and meal came out fast. Today, two of us shared: - Fresh Spring Roll with Shrimp - Pad Key Mao with Beef There were two shrimp rolls in the order. Both were very fat - stuffed full of lettuce and cabbage mostly. Each roll had 1/2 a shrimp in it. For long rolls, I'm accustomed to two 1/2 shrimps in them. Being so fat, they were harder to eat as they sort of fell apart from the bulk of green in it. As we split our meal, they served each of the two rolls on their own plates, each with a dish of peanut sauce. So that was nice. The Pad Key Mao (Drunken Noodle) was meh. I'd rate it a 2.5 on its own. The presentation was nice but there just wasn't much flavor and the beef wasn't thin strips of sirloin. I think we'll pause Spice for a bit.

They were good and fresh. I'd like to have had some fresh basil inside them. The peanut sauce was Devine. The perfect compliment. The crab Rangoon was soooo good. Lightly crispy in texture and delicious. One of the best I've ever eaten. The chicken pad Thai was "ok". I ordered a 2 in heat level and it was served a bit more "hotter" than I'd have liked. The chili oil slightly over powered the dish. The range offered was 1-5 in terms of spice and thought I'd be safe with a 2. I'm still trying to decide if I liked it or not (I'm super picky when it comes to Thai food) Landing 3 stars for the Pad Thai. The fried rice was good as was the wonton soup. M that I had ordered the spicy basil and chicken dish, the fried tofu appetizer and the fried shrimp appetizer during my last visitm The spicy basil and chicken dish I ordered I asked for a level two spice because I wasn't really wanting something super spicy . Their level two is other Thai restaurants levels three or four so it was spicier than I had anticipated but I didn't mind because I do like spicy food. I just wasn't in the mood for it at night, but it was good.Mm crispy shrimp appetizers were probably the best I've ever had at a Thai restaurant. The wonton wrapper on the outside was super crispy almost no oil which I really appreciate it wasn't greasy tasting and there was I want to say spinach or a green vegetable that was also incorporated inside the wrap so I really really like that The most disappointing item that I got was the fried tofu because it was overcooked almost to the point of being burnt, which made it very dried out and tough . Sadly, this was the one dish. I was really excited about because so few places make or fried tofu anymore. The portion size was fair for the price, but it was pretty inedible. I will probably not be ordering this dish again. Overall, the portion size for the price was very fair . The main entrée and the shrimp appetizer I ordered were delicious. The restaurant is very clean and the kitchen looked spotless and immaculate. It's a great little neighborhood restaurant. I'll definitely be going back and trying some of the other items on their menu. I would definitely recommend.

A quick note on seating: the patio is lovely in theory, with the optional open windows and a breezy feel, but the chairs are not winning any comfort awards. Inside booths are the move. Also worth noting, this is Fort Worth, and once the thermometer hits triple digits, the patio conversation ends itself if the windows are open. Plan accordingly. Malai starts every table with steamed sticky rice and an eggplant dip, which is a charming little ritual and a genuinely good one. We also kicked things off with the Edamame, a heads up on the heat level there, and the Fried Imperial Rolls, filled with ground pork and shrimp and served with a sesame soy sauce. Fair warning: these do not photograph well and arrive at the table looking a little shy. Don't be fooled. They're flavorful, subtly spicy, and well worth ordering. For entrees, we tried the Basil Vegetable Fried Rice two ways, one vegan and one with chicken. The vegan version was a genuine surprise, with vegetables cooked just right and a flavor that didn't need the chicken to make its case. The mushrooms, however, had the texture of something you'd find in a hardware store. Chew at your own risk. The Green Curry, meanwhile, was a case of too much of a good thing. The curry was so heavy-handed it drowned everything underneath it. Sometimes restraint is a virtue. Save room for the Banana Pot de Crème. It's creamy, subtly sweet, and a graceful finish to the meal. The service at Malai is enthusiastic, and I do mean enthusiastic. The staff works as a team, all smiles, attentive, always nearby. Occasionally a little too nearby. More than once a plate nearly disappeared before we were done with it. It's a small complaint, and honestly a far better problem than the alternative. They're warm, cheerful, and clearly enjoy what they do, which goes a long way. Portions are generous, so order a few dishes and share the wealth. For a lunch stop between shops, Malai Kitchen punches well above its weight.
