2026 update. I noticed Thanh Thanh now has a $28 prix fixe menu. Usually those are for higher end restaurants or during restaurant week. Not sure how they will make money off that because it's a bargain for a starter, popular plates like pho, garlic noodles, rice or vermicelli and a drink. But for lunch, I try not to eat that much. Today's order was a char grilled chicken over garlic noodles $19 + $2 egg. The effort was there. This was delish. The chicken had a smokey char-grilled taste, juicy instead with the right amount of glaze. The garlic noodles were desirable. They improved it since the last time I had this. Service is very nice so it breaks my heart to give the rating I gave. Interior is less than bare bones but who cares? It's all about the food. The portions at this restaurant are the stingiest I've ever seen at a Vietnamese restaurant. In fact, they might be the stingiest I've every seen anywhere outside of a 5-star Michelin French restaurant. I'm not exaggerating: $0.25 - $0.75 food cost for a $14 plate price. That was a dollop of rice, generous iceberg lettuce, and literally 4 oz. meat. I know the cost of running a business in SF is tough, but this is insane. Got the tofu banh mi to go but snapped a quick pic and tried a few bites while fresh and warm. I was pretty underwhelmed to be honest. First off, the bread was a French roll instead of a baguette, so it was not that authentic. Secondly, the tofu was minced rather than cut into strips, so the tofu crumbles fell out of the banh mi. Additionally, the value wasn't up to par even for SF at a price of $13.99 before tax for a much shorter than average banh mi, which could potentially be attributed to the use of about 1/2 of a French roll rather than a standard full-sized baguette. Friendly staff, the soups here are served hot and are very flavorful. I had pho tai and it was the perfect portion, broth clean and anise-forward, and the beef was good! My partner had the won ton soup, her broth was so yummy, her face lit up at the first sip. We were going to another place, but ended up here. I would not say that this place impressed me. We ordered two entires and one appetizer. The appetizer is literally just a few pieces of tofu with overly sweet bbq sauce. I would not recommend this dish. However, the both entires, a rice plate and garlic noddles, are pretty good. Pho broth is clear, deeply flavorful with that signature anise-forward kick that's not overpowering, served piping hot, decent portions, and tender rare beef in the pho tai that melts in your mouth. House special noodle soup and chicken noodle options get tons of love too. My standing order is the Bun Rieu, which is a tomato-based broth loaded with crab paste, fluffy pork/crab chunks, fresh veggies, and that perfect tangy-spicy umami loaded balance. Their Banh mi is generously stuffed, fresh, has earned a spot as my go to banh mi on Clement street. I can vouch for the vegan shaken mushroom appetizer which is a crispy, garlicky, innovative twist on shaken beef, imperial rolls/chả giò, a perfect crispy appetizer, wrap 'em with lettuce and noodles for the full experience. Vegan items are clearly labeled and solid (tofu vermicelli, veg curry noodle soup). Portions are generous, prices stay reasonable--full pho or combo under $20 easy. It can get busy during peak lunch/dinner on Clement (waits possible, but turns over quick), and street parking is the usual hunt--circle or use nearby lots. I have been on the hunt for good pho in SF for years. It was such a cold and rainy day, that hot soup was on our agenda. My friend and I found this restaurant online and decided to give it a try. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was clean. Below outlines what we ordered: Bun bo hue x2: 3/5, I had high expectations for this place, given the highly rated reviews, however it fell quite short from my expectations. The soup was quite watered down and you can clearly tell from the image that it was lifeless. It lacked flavor and most of all spice. BBH is known to have a harmious blend of many different flavor profiles from spicy, sour, sweet, salty, umami, with a strong lemongrass presence. It lacked all of that. In addition, the typical bbh has pork cubes and pork knuckle, but this one only had a few pieces of sliced pork and beef. I understand the cost to run a restaurant is expensive and labor + groceries are not getting any more affordable, however at the very least, the broth definitely needs work. Imperial rolls: 5/5, appetizer was great. i really liked the vermicelli noodles. It was refreshing when dipped in their ?house-made fish sauce. Huge pieces of romaine lettuce, but I was still able (barely) to eat it without cutting or biting it in half. House Special Noodle Soup - Ordered a large, but a medium came out. They offer to change the medium to large, but I knew my guest would not be able to finish. I was distracted as my guest wanted a drink/dessert from next door, Honey B Tea. Atmosphere - Small local business. Indoor and a few outdoor seats. Open 6 days a week from 9:30am to 6pm, closed Mondays. A clean organized unisex bathroom. Service - Good. Picked up the combo sandwich. The service was great and the food was delicious. We've also had the beef and pork vermicelli. While I was there today, there was a rude customer. That demanded her drinks had not been served, and they had been waiting a while. This is a small family own and run business. You have 1 person answering phones, taking order, making drinks, bagging to go orders, helping serve food, and working the register. Be patient. The young man handled it very professionally. This place is so cute and my pho was flavorful. Their noodles also tasted fresh as well. We came here for restaurant week and we sat outside because we had an our little dog with us which was fine they were very accommodating. It's just two small tables that sit outside on the sidewalk but it's not that busy of a street where there's constant foot traffic so it was actually a really nice day to eat outside. Have to start out by saying this place was an awesome go to restaurant, I loved everything we had ordered and it was awesome to hear that we were the first customers to try there new dish, the wonton with chili oil ! Great tasting wontons with a little spice on top, although the picture has 3 wontons, it comes with 4 ! A well balanced and tasty appetizer, a dish to be ordered again. Incredible local gem! We dined on the Prix Fixe menu for restaurant week, and absolutely loved the food. The appetizers of shaking mushrooms tasted SO MEATY and delicious, and the vegan imperial rolls were incredible. My main of garlic noodles with marinated tofu had so much depth of flavour and delicious umaminess. Delicious food. Friendly kind people. The Vietnamese ice coffee is my favorite out of all the restaurants I have tried in SF and Peninsula.

The older gentleman who served us was friendly, however the experience quickly went downhill at checkout. My husband paid via credit card and before he had the chance to reach for cash to tip, the young woman held up the receipt and loudly asked, "You don't want to tip??" It was rude, unprofessional, and clearly meant to embarrass us in front of the other customers. Mind you, we only placed one order of shrimp spring rolls, which were mediocre at best, and were in and out within 15 minutes. Tipping is not mandatory and should not be treated as such. While we won't be returning to this establishment, we hope she learns from this feedback and is more respectful towards customers moving forward. ***EDIT, MINUS 1 STAR Vivian, Had your concern genuinely been about customer satisfaction, a more appropriate and professional question would have been, "How was your service today?" Based on how you've approached dissatisfied customer reviews in the past, accusing them of lying and attempting to justify the establishment's poor service, it's clear you could benefit from some coaching in customer relations. I've worked in fast food myself and would be happy to offer basic advice, especially since your business seems to rely heavily on tips to stay afloat. Thought I had reviewed this long ago because this is our go-to Vietnamese place in the city! The food is consistently good and the family that runs it is just absolutely wonderful. We've been coming here maybe at least once a month since 2020 and we're still not tired of it. Anytime we come back from a hiking trip or travel, our first meal home is here. I'm vegetarian and the owners are mostly vegetarian too! It explains why their vegetarian Bún bò Huế is sooo good. It's spicy, it has this delicious, complex umami broth, there are always tons of fresh vegetables (still crunchy and sweet), and I love the amount of variety in tofu and soy protein they put in! A lot of places serving veggie pho and the like are petty lazy and just cut up some soft tofu slices at most, but at Thanh Thanh, they give you fried bean curd strips, fried tofu slices, some soy beef slices, faux shrimp...etc. This is one of the only places I've been as a vegetarian where I didn't feel like my food is second class or an afterthought. My husband likes getting their beef combo pho and also their BBH. Their banh mi is also delicious! French bread is always soft and warm on the inside, but nice crisp crust when you bite in. Pickled veggies are done right, and they pack it with your preferred filling (veggie ham or curry tofu for me). We also like the Vietnamese coffee a lot. The restaurant is pretty no-frills, just really simple, and why do you need more? The food is good, the people are wonderful, and you feel like you're eating with family. Prices have increased by $5 on average per dish since 2020, but we are more than happy to support this business as long as we can. This restaurant was really good :) both the food, the service and the decor. Had called in to reserve our family of 7 and they said sure. 10 mins later we came and our table was ready. Both spring rolls, shrimp and the other one beef were super delicious and fresh. The beef stew pho was super good with tender beef. I've been going to Thanh Thanh, a Richmond SF institution, for years. And like many others, primarily for their famous Banh Mi / sandwiches that folks used to drive down for from all over the Bay Area. Not sure if that's still a thing under the new ownership but I can vouch that the Tofu Banh Mi is still amazing (maybe even better!). The inside is basic with seating for 20 but I'm pretty sure the bulk of the business is to-go. But on this day I happened to walk by early (they open at 930am on most days) and decided to try the Vietnamese breakfast... Pork Congee with a 1000y Old Egg. Also got the Vietnamese Coffee (available cold but I asked for it hot on this cold, foggy SF morning). If I'm in the mood for Congee I always go for the less common Vietnamese or Thai versions. Chinese places (with a couple of exceptions) produce huge batches of it daily and tend to treat it more as a staple. The Congee is a healthy portion that could perhaps even be shared by two unless you're very hungry. Rice, minced pork, chicken soup base, 1000y old egg, a drizzle of scallions and cilantro with just the right amount of salt (for me). All the ingredients tasted very fresh which is key with a simple dish like Congee. And although I tend to add condiments (Sriracha, Soy sauce etc) this Congee was just great as is. More on the 1000y old aka Century egg that is commonly used in Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. It's basically a preserved egg which gives the egg white a gelatinous texture and leaves the yolk soft. The taste and texture goes very well with the congee and I highly recommend it. Vietnamese coffee is strong, uses condensed milk and a predetermined amount of sugar. I suppose those things can be adjusted on request but I recommend trying the default preparation at least once. Overall 5/5 for both the Congee and the Vietnamese coffee. And in general I'd give them a 5 star rating for their Banh Mi which is what they are best known for but that doesn't extend to Pho which is above average .. maybe a 3.5/5. read more
