Tried the lemongrass fish bun (vermicelli bowl) and the chicken fresh spring rolls. Unfortunately even though I was ravenous, the vermicelli bowl did not hit the spot. The fish tasted a touch like fish sticks and I didn't get much lemongrass flavor. The fish sauce was so so and not memorable. This is my second time visiting Little Vietnam Cafe and I have to say... it's the perfect cozy spot for those cold city days. Ever since I tried bun rieu at another restaurant, I've had the hardest time finding a Vietnamese place that serves it -- until I stumbled in here. Instant win. Meter parking is all around, but I seem to get the same spot just around the corner, and 30-40 minutes was more than enough time for a quick lunch stop. The food comes out fast and perfectly hot every time. My first visit, I ordered bun rieu + a can coconut drink using the self-order kiosk -- super easy. This time, I ordered in person and met someone who works there. It definitely feels like a warm, family-owned spot that's been part of the neighborhood for years. Because I ordered at the counter, she suggested drinks like Vietnamese iced coffee and Thai tea -- I went with the Thai iced tea plus my usual coconut can. And WOW... the Thai tea was exactly the midday pick-me-up I needed. Went back to an old favorite to go place in the Richmond district. Surprisingly it was better than the last time! Rolls to go are perfect for that eat and run rush. Pickled veggies and fish sauce that was not sickly sweet went well with the traditional basil nested between the delicious sesame and fresh noodles wrapped in a perfect rice paper roll. The bahn mi is also flavorful although I prefer the bread to be slightly more toasty. Linda is usually there but her partner and brother fills in. They are always cheerful and welcoming with lightning fast service. It's mostly take out but there is a short counter and a couple of tables outside to people watch. I've been a loyal customer of this establishment for over thirty years, and I feel compelled to share my concerns about the decline in quality I've noticed over the years. I remember when the peanut sauce was a rich dark brown, but for the last few years, it's been a much lighter shade. The fish sauce, which used to be of restaurant quality, has now turned into a pale liquid that doesn't taste the same. What really disappointed me recently was the sandwich I had yesterday. I work decently near Little Vietnam Cafe and there are many times when I need a quick filling bite that is tried and true. The rolls at Little Vietnam Cafe always serve me justice on those factors. My go-to picks: -Lemongrass Spring Roll with Fish Sauce on the side (sauce included already) -Buddha Roll (Sesame Tofu Sweet Potato Jicama Roll) I pay less than $10 for 2 big rolls that honestly get me SO full. Parking here can be a pain most of the time as it is in the heart of Clement Street and all primarily meter-based. Little Vietnam Cafe is a small, brightly sunlight lit cafe co-located with Koja Kitchen Clement (latter now relocated from their space on Clement Street) on 6th Avenue right off Clement. There's a lighted menu right when you walk in and to the left are some to-go items readymade. There's also a standalone kiosk for contactless ordering under the menu sign. The counter person is very nice and helpful with menu questions. There's some bar seating available along the span of window front and additional seats outside. Ordering was easy and pickup was quick. Takeout: * Combo Banh Mi Dac Biet - Vietnamese combo cold cuts sandwich which I believe the menu board said had pate but there was a slim smear if any. Cold cuts aplenty, slathered with Mayo. The bread was strange and don't know what to say about it except it wasn't a bread like most other banh mi places. Had also asked for jalapeños but not a one in my sandwich. This was decent combo Vietnamese banh mi but not awesome. 3.0 stars. * Fresh Shrimp Roll - shrimp, lettuce, cilantro, bean sprouts, mint leaves and vermicelli rolled in rice paper. served with peanut sauce. This was good and the peanut sauce was on point. 4.0 STARS. All in all, a decent sandwich and fresh shrimp roll. Their other offerings like Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), Bun Tom Thit Nuong (rice noodles with grilled shrimp and pork - bun is my go-to!), Grilled pork chop rice plate will see me returning to try. My favorite garlic noodles in SF. :) was glad to visit a few times this last week while I was visiting. The sauce they give you on the side to pour on is what makes it, along with the super soft noodles. I did't get meat this trip but I used to love the chicken and also the tofu. The fresh rolls are also huge, super fresh and there's a good variety of types. My favorite are the shrimp and the tofu/sweet potatoes. Believe it or not, I actually haven't had a bahn mi in well over 10 years. I love Vietnamese food, but I'm always choosing to eat pho and rice plates. The only 2 other times I've eaten bahn mi, I didn't enjoy it because the bread was too hard for me to chew, such as at Lee's Sandwiches. I was slightly worried about the texture of the sandwiches, but it wasn't difficult to chew at all. It's crispy on the outside and soft everywhere else. I did think the bread was slightly dry, but it might also be because I opted out of adding in the liver spread that's offered at the counter. I got the meatball sub which was interesting since the meat is actually spam/sausage meat rather than a ball of meat as I'm used to. It was meaty, but refreshing. I'm surprised Koja Kitchen decided to merge with this little shop. This shop used to close early, but now since Koja is merged, it closes later. The salad didn't have enough dressing, and the ingredients were more than what was listed on their menu. This included some sort of wonton chip dusting for crunch- but I don't eat friend foods (they don't sit well for me), so I likely would have ordered without, had I known. The chicken was sliced instead of shredded and although the flavor was good, the texture was too chewy for the cut.
