Thank Que Grill is located in a small stall inside the Ashland Market & Cafe along with a couple other businesses. They don't have many items on their menu, and most items are different versions of each other on a different vessel. However, that helps make everything delicious due to the focus! The lumpia shanghai was yummy - simply a well made lumpia with finely ground meat, served with sweet chili sauce. Sure, I can get 10 pieces for half the price of this where I live in Daly City, but you gotta take what you can get in San Leandro! Also, their lumpia pieces are extra long, like a taquito. The Thank Que bowl was delicious, although smaller than I thought it'd be. Not much food goes for less than $10 these days though, so the portion wasn't that alarming. My boyfriend normally dislikes Filipino food, but he really liked the BBQ chicken! The sauce is sweet and tangy, and tastes like there's some other Asian flavoring mixed in (some notes of sweet and sour, some of a thick soy like oyster sauce). I love how well the BBQ sauce integrates over the steamed rice, and the light pickled papaya (atchara). The folks serving up this fresh take of Filipino food are super nice! Pinoy way BBQ, rice and pickled papaya slaw! Ooooh yes! So glad we came across this hidden place. Located in the Ashland center off East 14th. Got super lucky with parking. There is construction on the streets and I almost walked right past it. It is literally hidden. The flyer on the window saved me from Looking around like an idiot. The menu selection is simple. Makes it easy to order. Presentation is thoughtful. Food is flavorful, nice chunky moist bites of chicken. The pickled papaya with the chicken and rice is sooooo Filipino!!!!!! Reminds me of home. Especially liked the bbq sauce. Right amount of sweet, tang and punch. Just like moms. Gave a 4 star cause I felt like I needed more! I'm a little pinay with a football player appetite! Lol!!! I heard about this place from an Oaklandside.org article on new restaurant openings in Oakland. I ordered the Filipino Style BBQ Banh Mi, which was SUPER yum! It's probably my new favorite banh mi! I'd say the only thing missing from the sandwich was a fried egg. In case you didn't know, a fried egg makes almost every sandwich better. I also had the Lumpia Shanghai. It was good but I was disappointed that there were only three pieces. I'm thinking it should be five or six for an order. Also, I'd like to see an alternative lumpia dipping sauce to sweet chili sauce. Maybe offer white vinegar with garlic and/or some Datu Puti Spiced Vinegar. I met the owner, Chef All Day Rene...he introduced me to the staff and was very friendly while I asked him a bunch of questions. I'd like to see them expand their opening days (only Thursday to Saturday for now) and their menu sooner than later. In particular, I'm hoping they'll add some Filipino silog dishes in the future. I love banh mi and I'm always on the hunt for a new place, so when I saw this in a YouTube video, I knew I had to check it out. Cute little restaurant in the middle of nowhere, but their Filipino chicken banh mi is to die for! A little pricey, but trust me, well worth it! Just tried Thank Que Grill and it was delicious. The location is hard to spot, but don't let that deter you. When you get there, there's tons of parking space, and they have a really lovely shaded outdoor seating area in the back. You can see the care and love that Chef Rene has put into renovating the place. Definitely feeling a good family vibe from behind the counter, got a sample of the juicy chicken before ordering one of their Filipino Bánh mì sandwiches. Make no assumptions, this looks like a Bánh mì, but has a totally distinctive flavor of its own. It's a great little gem across the Coast Guard Island- plenty of parking, inviting outside patio, run by very nice, friendly folks. Their BBQ chicken is juicy and tasty, which you can have in a Filipino Banh Mi style sandwich or on a salad or rice bowl - their atchara is just the right amount of pickled sweetness and their Sisig fries are my new guilty pleasure. Was attending the West Oakland Artisans Festival at O2 on Saturday and while we tried to avoid the initial lunch crowd, it reached the point where we were hungry and would just have to suck it up and deal with the lines. There were two food areas - one in the courtyard in front of Soba Ichi, and the other around the corner from that. When we peaked down the other corner we saw Aburaya (always a great choice), a BBQ stall, and Thank Que Grill. As a lumpia addict, I figured I'd get an order to tide me over while we packed into the other space. Fortunately Thank Que had practically no line and Lumpia were already fried and ready to serve. I got an order of 3 fairly long lumpia with dipping sauce and snacked on them as we checked out the other section. It was a madhouse. There was a taco stall, a dumpling stall with a 20 minute wait, and the burger stall which I was meh about. So I did the common sense thing - got back in line at Thank Que. This time around I ordered the Lumpia Sliders, the item that literally everyone who saw asked the kid at the register "What are lumpia sliders?" Turns out they are the lumpia filling, but as a slider patty. And turkey-based, which I was not expecting. Made to order, these did take a while (I ended up snacking on hush puppies from the bbq stall) but they were tasty. The patty, a pineapple slice, some mayo and lumpia sauce. A bit sticky, but worth it. They also had a Filipino Banh Mi that sounded good, but happy with what I ordered, and it didn't break the bank. Stopped in for a quick lunch. My girlfriend is always looking to try new Filipino restaurants in the area. This is a little hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. But it's a small kiosk inside Ashland place literally on the corner of E14&Kent. On to the important part... Rene, the owner operator of the business was very friendly and welcoming when we approached the counter. He offered us a sample of what I assume is his specialty, the BBQ chicken. Unfortunately lumpia wasn't available due to large catering orders he needed to fill. We had the thank que bowl which was delicious. BBQ chicken over rice with fresh jalapenos and cilantro.
