I've never been to Pine, Arizona. But after sampling THAT Brewery at the Local First Fall Festival...well. I need to make some changes in my life. Priorities! Michael eagerly helped us sample four beers. Strawberry Blond Blacked Out IPA Chai Stout AZ Trail Ale Yes, I often say "I've never met a beer I don't like." This time it *really* was true. (And not because I drank so many. A-H-E-M.) Usually one to reach for a dark beer first - and continue drinking that one - I let my rubber arm fold and tried my drinking friend's strawberry blond. Holy heck. And that is how we decided to try all four beers. We learned that the Cottonwood tasting room is now open. The HH are 3-6pm (W-F) & 4-6 (M-F) in Pine. Beer, Beer, BEER! It sounded super neat. Family friendly, volleyball court (I'm short, so I'm sure I'd just watch) AND they have ice cream. You just have to feed me. I will come. But wait. This is why I will come. I'd been wanting to visit here since we'd sampled some of their beers at the Brew Fest in Prescott back in June. So my wife and I drove up from Prescott to check it out. We immediately started out with the sampler tray, which is a great way to try out their brews to see which one is for you. Favorites ended up being their Strawberry Blonde and their Amber, though the Trail Ale and their other Blonde were good (the stout was a little flat). Needless to say, we left with a growler of Strawberry Blonde (good to get something my wife enjoys too) Since we got there around 2pm, we only had bar food, but the fried green beans with wasabi were great, and my steak medallion kebabs melted in my mouth. Keep in mind that That Brewery and Pub is in tiny Pine, AZ nestled up in the mountains, so it's not a high-end restaurant. But for a small place like this, it's exactly the kind of place my wife and I look for, so I give it four stars, and would love to go back again (maybe have dinner next time). read more

I tried the grilled chicken Caesar salad pizza twice now. It is really a salad on a mozzarella pizza. It is light enough and unique to be one of my favorites. Big enough for two or you have leftovers for later. Try with locally brewed Road rash beer. Winter they have the patio wrapped and heaters. Many businesses struggle with the winter slow down. I was tired, after a long day of hiking, any food and beer would have been good, but messing up my order in 3 ways? I started with a stout, I was given the dunkle. It was beer and good so I didn't complain. We started with the pretzels and mustard $4, nothing special the pretzels did not taste the freshest and the mustard was semi artisan. For my main dish I went with the artichoke dip burger with e a veggie patty and thin fries. I was delivered a south west burger veggie style with fries, again I was starving so I went with it as my mistrust for the service grew, it came to a hilt when the water I ordered did not arrive. The burger it self was mediocre at best, the patty was the same chipotle black bean ones costco sells with a hint for freezer burn, the green chilies on it was flavorless. We also had a veggie pizza $15 which made use of hummus for sauce, it was interesting and tasted good as anything with that much cheese will taste good. I then had their hikers ale as I just went hiking, it had a nice spice note but the hopps lingered on the pallet just a bit too long. read more

I used to come here every year, the night before Zane Grey 50 mile run. I was not able to do so the last couple of years. I decided to take a short trip to hike part of the high line trail and stop at THAT Brewery to recreate the magic of years past. I ordered the light but refreshing Strawberry Blonde. The first sip brought back the magic, this was a great start. I ordered the soft pretzels, the burger du jour (fire something rather) with habaneros and some other peppers, pepper-jack cheese and the only burgers that came with sweet potato waffle fries. There's a story about the exclusivity of these fries related to a charity event for 4H. I also ordered a sandwich to go. My to go order showed up first, way before the pretzels. The pretzels finally showed up with beer cheese, a fresh combo that was very satisfying. Then the $12 burger showed up, it did have some heat but did not pack a lot of flavor. The bun was disappointing, same for the raw onion, lettuce and tomato, very blend. The waffle sweet potato fries were nothing to write about. Why make this exclusive to this burger? Some people next to me were a bit upset about it. Overall the food was very greasy. The menu has changed, the quality seems to have gone down. They only make pizzas on Thursday, why? Some of the Phoenicians around enjoyed their food though. The service overall was good. Waiter spoke way too fast when describing the daily special. I'm not sure I will go back. Next time I come down to Pine, I will give another business up the street a shot. As a supporter of the AZ Trail association, and THAT is as well, I'm disappointed. read more

I was really hoping this would be a 5 star review, but a few things gave us a less than desirable experience. We came here around 2:30 pm on a Saturday. The place was pretty busy, which I imagine happens during the summer months. While we were waiting for a table we noticed an insane amount of flies outside by peoples food. Not sure if the restaurant tries to control that, but it was enough to make us want to eat inside. Our table ended up being inside and our server was hopefully just having a bad day, but she was AWFUL. As soon as we sat down I could hear her complaining that she was double sat. I used to work in a restaurant and understand the frustrations of this, but you shouldn't EVER make you guests feel like a burden for your host seating them in your section. When the server did come by she was very cold to us. I ordered a drink and when she slammed (yes, she actually slammed my drink down) it down a large portion spilled out of it. She never even acknowledged this and I had to clean it up myself. When our food came, it was less than impressive. The beer cheese that came with my pretzels was lukewarm and super thick because it wasn't hot. I asked our server for some beer mustard too and she said she'd bring me some and never came back to our table. I ended up doing without. The lettuce on my salad was also really gross. Some parts were edible and other pieces were so old that they were slimy and very unappetizing. I couldn't even finish it. Had it been fresh, it would have been really good. My husband got the prime rib sandwich and said it was okay. Nothing to write home about. The beer was tasty though, so I will give them that. It sucks we had such awful service or else I would have loved to give more stars. The couple next to us had a different server who was so friendly and attentive. I think she would have made our experience much better. If we're in the area, I would like to go back, but I won't be expecting much. read more

Stopped here after a fairly unsuccessful attempt to hike fossil creek (we went to late in the day and only got to do half the hike!). At first my friend and I were unsure of whether or not we should stop here because the exterior looked a little odd, but after checking out the menu and seeing the vegetarian options, I thought it would be a good choice! There is good outdoor seating, perfect for nice days.The interior is nice as well, very ecclectic! I especially liked the women's bathroom, which was bright pink with a cool art piece inside. Also liked how at the front in the bar, you could see where the beer was being brewed. When we first got there, no one was standing there to seat us for quite a while, we looked around and eventually the bartender had to come seat us. Everyone working there was nice though, everyone seemed to be friendly and in a good mood, our server was great as well. I cant remember the name of what I ordered, but I got a black bean burger with pepper jack cheese and green chiles on top, and it was pretty good. Not the best veggie burger ever, but it did hit the spot. The best part was the wedge fries, they were seasoned really well, and tasted fresh. Yum! Kind of lame that they charge extra for a black bean patty though. My friend got a rib sandwich and he did not like it, thought it tasted dry and flavorless. Also I ordered the house merlot, and it was very good, and only $5 which I thought was a good price! My fiancé's dad tells me this is one of the only best places to eat in town, and since there are so few of them, I am obliged to believe him. I was visiting my fiancé's dad who lives in the Portals and this is one restaurant out of very few that is at the bottom of the hill. The black bean burger was okay, it lacked more spices and seemed to fall apart easily. I am not sure if they make their own applesauce, but the chunky applesauce was very good. Somewhat normally priced at $10 a plate for lunch. They served the beer European style: warm. Not too pleased about that. We would have given this 4.5 stars, but it was pushing five, so we went withy that. We ate lunch on a road trip up to Flagstaff off the reviews and pictures on yelp. We ordered the crab cake Po'Boy with skinny fries and clam chowder (only served on Fridays). Others in our party ordered the loaded baked potato, the grilled cheese BLT, and the elk and buffalo chili. The kids had corn-dogs and mac'n'cheese with skinny fries and seasoned wedge fries. The crab cake Po'Boy was great with no fishy taste. The clam chowder was great, not too thick and creamy, still on the soupy side. I like that. There were plenty of clams and not overloaded with potatoes as a filler. Thumbs up over all. The chili was a welcome change. Unlike any other chili I've tasted, the buffalo and elk weren't the only different flavors as the spices were unique as well. Also, thumbs up. No complaints on the grilled cheese BLT or the potato. There were several gluten free options as well, which was important for our party. The skinny fries were predictable but tasty all around. The seasoned wedge fries were crispy on the outside and soft inside sized just proportionate enough to balance each other. The mac'n'cheese was predictable but homemade with a punch of spice. The corn dogs were very predictable, but the cost of $4 was nice. The setting and ambience were casual and welcoming. Friendly staff and quick service. There were a complimentary sand volleyball court and hot shoes as well. Bathrooms were small, but clean. Overall, good experience and worth the stop especially while driving the Payson route to Flagstaff instead of through Phoenix coming from the southeast part of the state. We drove by THAT a year ago, during the summer, sadly to find them closed on a Monday and Tuesday. Luckily we drove by on a Sunday and enjoyed a refreshing break and bite on our way to the mountain. We ordered the pretzel sticks and soup of the day, white bean chicken, and a beer each as we were just snacking. The pretzels were super good, just the right amount of salt and bite to it along with the beer cheese .... MM GOOD The soup was amazing! We were totally mind blown to find the chicken plentiful and better yet grilled before being placed in the broth. The broth was full of flavor and super creamy. Lastly we tried the Raspberry beer and the orange creamscicle porter, raspberry was rich with the fruity flavor but not overly sweet and the porter was good but I didn't get that orange flavor at all. There were A LOT of flies, but we were told it's common during this time of year. For some reason, our table seemed to have more than most, but I don't blame the restaurant. Kelly P. was our server. She was pretty direct and to-the-point initially, but eventually became warm and kind. Reason for the 4 stars? The flies and the not-so-warm welcome/greeting when we arrived. Food is great. Ordered wings the meat was old. They tasted like they had been previously cooked, refrigerated, & reheated. There's was no sauce to be found on them. Dry gross old chicken wings! I threw them in the trash! The pretzel was laced with some sort of buttery grease & heavily salted. Never going back! When I told my server the wings were dry, old & I couldn't eat them. I'm so tired of eateries in our town charging tourist prices to serve Shitty old food with wait staff who want 20% tip and actually deliver this crap to the table! The bar was pretty quick in serving drinks and the staff was able to put together a large table pretty quick. For being a $50 meal (Elk Burger, Pickled Brew Burger, Bourbon Amaretto Sour and Crunchy Pickled Spears), I was really expecting to get what my wife and I paid for. Elk Burger was requested at medium rare, came as medium and toppings were boring (jalapeños and bacon were an $8 add on). Pickled Brew Burger came with hard veggies on it, cheese was mehhh and patty was on the burnt side. No complaints on the Spears and Sour, but the burgers should be what you come here for... right?
