This tavern is amazing! You can feel the very fabric of the history of our country in every nook and corner of this place. I believe this is the second oldest continuously operated tavern in the United States and it doesn't disappoint. This is the place that they held Maj. John Andre while he awaited trial for his double dealing with Benedict Arnold. There is quite a bit of history weaved in, I especially liked the muskets on the walls. You definitely feel transported to another long gone era. My son and I ate brunch here after some hiking in New Jersey and enjoyed both the meal and the ambiance of the place. How cool is it to eat traitorous eggs Benedict Arnold! Freaking love it! Rockland County is stunning in the fall and this historic little town of Old Tappan is quite charming. I highly recommend a trip to the area for the Hudson valley views and a stop by the Old 76 House. Reservations are required so call ahead. read more

Went for Restaurant week dinner after not having stepped foot inside here in a decade. I like what they've done with the place. It's dim and dreary and it really does look like people died in there. Authenticity! The service was slow. The waitress was nice but everything took a little longer than it should. The food was not bad. Fried artichoke app was yummy and the feta sauce they came with was unique. The seafood app was good but not spicy as advertised. The vegan sausage and peppers was ok, the "sausage" almost tasted like sausage . The steak entree was good upon first bite but then quickly became a little chewy and reminded me of a banquet hall meal where the options are chicken beef or fish. Desserts were the green tea cheesecake which I thought tasted like detergent but my mom and brother liked it. And the strawberry tres leches which was just ok, nothing special. I would not go out of my way to return here but it's a historic landmark so if you like that type of thing then check it out but stick to apps and drinks. read more

40 years is a long time to be a customer. Sad to say, that our family will NEVER be returning to the '76 house which was a family go to for over 40 years. Last week, a family member contracted food poisoning at the 76 house and was taken to the hospital as a result. The other family members in attendance at the time did note that the meal was not up to expectations and did not finish their meal -- which is not the norm. Following up to report the incident to make sure the staff was aware of the incident, my family member was told, "No one else complained, maybe something is wrong with your stomach." Not we are so sorry to hear, hope you feel better NOTHING like that at all. We are not looking for compensation, just wanted to notify. The disrespect and lack of compassion far outweighs the sad meal. read more

We got to sit in the corner chair that George Washington sat in when he signed the treaty (?) ending the Revolutionary War. When we left, we drove up Andre Hill to see the spot where Maj. I don't remember ever being here before, but my family says I have--decades ago. But yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed a party for my niece's bridal shower. First up is the layout, decor and history of the place. It's very quaint and cozy, and the little I did wander around, I told myself I want to come back another time for a more personal experience. Second, as family members were setting up for the party, I observed the workers were so helpful and obliging, moving tables, adding tables, fetching things. Very professional. The food was very good. It was a set menu, so I had the hash and was pleasantly surprised at the flavors. I normally don't eat spicy eggs, but the flavors were spot on. If I have anything negative to say -- it's that I needed a whole basket of those delicious muffins for myself! Again, I'm looking forward to returning so I can try some of the tempting items on the menu. Lastly, I'd like to give a shout out to Jessie, our server. Holy cheese that woman worked her tail off! Our drinks were continuously topped off, she was always around when we needed something, and delivered it all with her friendly smile. Simply amazing, so thank you Jessie! We were visiting Tappan from Washington DC, where plenty of excellent restaurants are available to us, and the '76 House matched or topped all of them. We made definite plans to return to Tappan specifically for this restaurant. Its history, too, adds a fascinating element to the dining experience. Several members of our party have food allergies, and this was handled with tact and expertise, perfectly in all details. The '76 House will be my wedding venue this summer, so I'm not without bias. Putting that aside, the restaurant/bar/tavern is a casually charming historical hotspot for visitors and a community hub for locals. Even if you don't drive, the 76 House is easily accessible from NYC and surroundings towns via the Rockland Coach bus lines that stop right in front of the restaurant (it is literally the name of the stop). It's also a block or so away from the Tappan Reformed Church, another historical gem founded by Dutch settlers in the 17th century. The restaurant has both a tap room and a Prison Room, where the British spy John Andre was confined prior to his execution. Once through the doors, you'll feel like you walked through the doors of a museum-turned-bar. Revolutionary war clothes, armaments, and period portraits adorn the walls. The first time we came, there was a reenactment in progress with a Union regiment (luckily not Confederate) brunching and dancing the afternoon away. We experienced the very reasonably priced brunch buffet (which, for under $30, includes unlimited booze) and gorged ourselves on breakfast staples, seafood and lox, and roast meats and poultry. Salads and desserts were also available. Everything was delicious, but I recommend coming earlier in the day, rather than the tail end of brunch, when we arrived. Service has been friendly all 3 times we've been here so far. Great beers are on tap, including Bell's Two Hearted, an IPA we hop-heads know, love, and cherish. There is a lot to learn from this place. They have historic artifacts and pictures all around. They also have outfits and guns from the 1700s. If you're a history buff and looking for good food, this place is for you. My fiancé and I came here (he's the history buff) to check it out. We saw signs for it on the main road. I got a glass of their cab and he got a cup of coffee. We started with their half dozen oysters that were very fresh. We shared a chicken pot pie which was amazing. They make it with fresh cut vegetables and this puff pastry that will crunch in your mouth. We shared the creme brûlée and it was perfect. A thick layer of sugar on top that you have to crack through, garnished with raspberries. On our way out, my fiancé was looking around and the owner brought him 2 guns to check out. He was very knowledgeable about the area and the history of the site. Will def come back when we are around the area. read more

My sister and I happened upon this place awhile back. Stopped in for a cocktail one Sunday afternoon and we're amazed. A lovely jazz singer was performing. She was incredible!!! We decided to come back for dinner this past Saturday night. I can't say enough about the Service. Our Waiter, Joe, was incredible. His knowledge about the place was fascinating....my brother in law, being a history buff, as well as my sister and I were so impressed. Joe suggested menu items to us and I have to say he was dead on.....my scallops were done to perfection...my brother in laws steak AMAZING...my sisters Crab Cake was delicious...then to our surprise..there was a Brazilian Jazz guitarist performing, who was so incredible we stayed for dessert and Cafe. Wanted to come here as it is a pretty historic place! The atmosphere was very fitting. It's unbelievable how we were in rooms from the 1600's and 1700's There is live music there all of the time which is a sweet add on. We went with the Yankee Pot Roast, Amish Chicken, and Steak. Each were very good and left everyone pleased with their order. The desserts were great as well. I highly recommend the Austrian Tort. As well as their homemade sherbet. We have been to this restaurant several times over the years and always enjoyed the food and old-fashioned atmosphere. So it was our first choice when my mother-in-law came to town for the holidays and we wanted to do a special night out. On December 10th, at exactly 8:10pm (we have the phone log), we called to make reservations for Friday, Dec. 17. Knowing restaurants get filled with parties on the holidays, we wanted to make sure we got a table somewhere nice. The woman who answered the phone took our information and confirmed our reservation. On the 17th, we showed up at the appointed time, eager for a good meal and a fun night. We walked in and found the entire restaurant taken up by a wedding. An older woman (manager? owner? she never identified herself) came over and told us the restaurant was closed for the private event. We explained that we had reservations. In a very rude manner, she told us she handles all reservations and she wouldn't have made one, that we needed to leave. We explained it had been a young girl who took the reservation. The woman then said, "Well, she made a mistake. I can't help that. If it wasn't me, I don't know what was said. Now, you have to leave." Not once did the woman apologize. After telling us to leave, she turned her back and walked away. We will never go back to the '76 House, simply because there is no excuse to be treated like that. There are plenty of other restaurants in NY/NJ with good food and polite staff; we don't need this one. They're not that great. read more

Celebrated a wedding brunch for my son and his beautiful bride on Sunday afternoon. We were a party of nine and had a special needs young man with us. Laura gave us phenomenal service!!!! Our glasses were never empty. Whatever we requested was brought promptly and she made our entire party feel welcome and valued. She was patient with our young man even taking time out to talk to him. We came to Manhattan from TX, and after reading about this place online decided to make a side trip out of it. Between Ubering all the way to Tappan and eating, we spent almost $400, and I'm so glad we did. The town was charming, the food very good, the staff extremely accommodating, and atmosphere (for a history buff) was off the charts. Even my wife loved it (NOT a history buff!), and our teenage girls appreciated some chill time away from the city chaos. Yankee pot roast was phenomenal...lean and fall-apart tender, though a little bland but nothing a little salt couldn't fix. Pot pie very good, fish and chips even better. Stuffed clams and flatbread appetizers was very satisfying...had to pry the clams away from my daughters. The hostess (Connie, I think) was a sweetheart...let me handle the revolutionary war muskets and try on the leather soldiers cap circa Revolutionary War, and pointed out the specifics of where Andre was held prisoner, where the judges bench was (it was plainly much more than a tavern back in the day.) The owner, Robert, showed me the off-limits upstairs area where Alexander Hamilton lived for 2 yrs while serving as GWs aide-de-camp during the war. Almost forgot, there's a watercolor of Benedict Arnold that still hangs upside down above the fireplace since GW inverted it himself following his betrayal.
