I would say the fried pickles are amazing, the draft beer is served room temp, there is no pretzel on the menu, and the German snack is pretty loaded. The the end, the price isn't too bad for what you would expect it to be and is comparable to your neighborhood places for those two items at least. The indoor dining area was cool and gave us a very big break from the summer heat, especially with iced lemonade. Good German food! Is it the best? I don't think so. Is the food good? Absolutely! We ordered the German meatballs, Jagerschnitzel, Bratwurst, and Beer Battered Mushrooms. As for the sides it's not something to write home about...the corn was definitely canned corn. But the mashed potatoes and the sauerkraut was good. Overall I would rate a 4 out of 5 for a casual meet up spot at Fredericksburg. Will return again! The service was warm and friendly! The ambiance was nice at the air conditioned dining hall. We ate in the dining room. The other option was the beer garden. It was no wait time on either even though it was dinner time and located on main street. Good parking in the back of the restaurant. Service was great. They were quick and friendly. My husband had the Reuben sandwich. He ate every bite and complained then that the bread wasn't toasted like he had expected it to be. But it was a dark bread and he ate it all. I had the spicy Texas schnitzel. So darn good if we were to go back the only thing I would change is I would have two pickled cabbages as my two sides rather than the hard German potato salad. However, the ranch dressing served with it was very watery. The schmorbraten was fairly good, tender, and tasted good. The rouladen was downright horrible. The meat was severely dry, and they killed it with black pepper. Additionally, it had nearly no sauce at all. The spaetzle that was its side was good. The kids were happy with the mac n cheese. I love German food! I've been to Germany & had the real deal. College friend was German & her mom cooked up a storm. So coming to The Auslander, I had high hopes. We sat outside, it was hot & humid, BUT we had a fan right above us, so the weather was a deterrent. Fried pickles were out hot & on point! Hubs ordered the Schmorbraten (German pot roast) & I had the Jager schnitzel with mushroom gravy. I hate to admit, the food came out lukewarm. Waiter never refilled the drinks and/or water glasses. I wasn't overly impressed with hubs meal - it's "pot roast" and the pork loin (schnitzel) was a little on the tough side. I think if the food was hot, maybe even warmer, it might have been a more enjoyable meal. read more

Do not pass this place up! Very authentic German food! The schnitzel will knock your socks off try the red cabbage and hot German potato salad. Also the spicy pimento cheese is fabulous... and of course, you have to try the fried pickles! My girls devoured the fried chicken and Mac and cheese with French fries. The sausage sandwich was good but my husband didn't not like the mustard they used for the sandwich. The rouladen was dry. The portions are huge! The fried mushrooms were huge mushroom pieces. The rouladen came with spatzle and bread. The fried chicken came with bread, mashed potatoes, etc. Service: The staff was friendly, constantly refilled drinks and food was served in a timely manner despite the busy Saturday lunch rush. Called ahead to see the availability for a party of 13, the gentleman on the phone said they weren't busy and to feel free to come. After arriving at the restaurant walking through the rear entrance we noticed the availability ourselves, once at the hostess station we encountered the worse employee of any establishment I've ever been to, Logan was her name. After informing her that it was a party of 13 she instantly looked appalled, maybe because of the party size or possibly because we are Black! After noticing her disposition and her verbal desire not to seat us, I replied "ok we can go across the street" to her response of "thank you". As a potential customer I couldn't believe this restaurant would employ a person that would turn away a party of 13 people. There was another hostess that immediately came to us as we were walking out the door to apologize and let us know that if we did want to dine if would be a 30 minute wait and we could be seated, for her attention and kindness I thanked her. If you're black and going to Fredericksburg I would NOT recommend patronizing this restaurant, if Logan is still employed there. Visited from Houston over Memorial Weekend. We started with the jalapeño cheese for the appetizer and it was delicious! We had never tried an appetizer like it. For the entree I ordered the schmorbraten, which was delicious I ate everything on the plate. Ended with the vanilla bread pudding and apple strudel. Both were extremely yummy. I had a great experience here. If you can't find parking along the road, they do have parking in the back. If you park in the back you do have to walk thru the building to get to the host stand. We decided to sit in there dining room because it was hot in the other spaces. Had some cute decor. Especially the clocks they had up on the wall. I got there German Meatballs to eat. They were juicy, steaming, and they served them in my opinion with the proper portioning size. If I eat these again, I will ask for extra gravy though. It also came out super quick. For my drink, I got a Hofbrau Dunkel. It's a German dark lager beer. Very similar to Shiner. I very much enjoyed it. Pixkes up a 6 pack of it later. I enjoyed everything I got from this place. It is Thursday during Spring break at about 11:30 am and it was easy to walk-in and get seated. It's a bar type ambiance with low lighting and there is inside and outside dining. We ordered fried pickles as an appetizer and they were thick slices and fried perfect. They weren't greasy. I ordered the Schmorbraten which is pot roast with gravy over mashed potatoes and a side of buttered corn and roll. The pot roast was so delicious and very tender and moist. I had the rouladen, it sounded intriguing. The meat was tough and I thought it would be wrapped around a pickle spear but instead it has a few pickle slices wrapped up inside. Decided not to stick around for dessert. The wait was also quite long. Heads up, if you're visiting in the winter there is a very tiny sitting area right next to the door that opens continuously from people coming and going and it gets pretty cold and if there are not seats open you'll have to wait outside. It's pretty decent German food and the service was friendly and fast. It's a bit pricey but it's a touristy spot. The Wienerschnitzel is up to my German wife's standards. The German potato salad was better the last time we were here last year though. A bit flavorless. The sauerkraut and red cabbage was a bit on the vinegary side but very well made.
