We were finally able to stop by and enjoy some Axe throwing. Place is close to the freeway. They have drinks and snacks. No alcohol allowed! It's spacious inside. The staff is nice and friendly. They show you 2 different ways to throw. The wood that we were throwing the axes at was pretty bad, I am not sure how often they change it. Still workable though. The space inside where you are throwing is too close, we felt that it could've been further out , so there's more room to aim and throw. I recommend this place! It's a chill environment! The prices are good and like I said, the staff was awesome. Get there earlier to give yourself time to fill out the waiver. Make a reservation as well, it's super easy to do. If you are a novice or a pro, The Axe Lair is the place for everyone. I unfortunately can not comment of the food, but the service & location were amazing. I had made an appointment for two late evening on a Thursday, unfortunately we were running late, so I called hoping to see if we could be pushed back or if I could buy a different hour if possible. Since there were no other large parties, the staff let us know that we would still be able to show up without worrying (we got super lucky). As for the location, it's a very cool vibe, the games are quite simple but still fun. The staff will go through a simple axe throwing lesson & then let you & your party go. The Axe throwing experience brings me great excitement. If you have ever watched Kung Fu Hustle, I felt like my heart was dancing to the beat of The Axe Gang's theme song. I was so excited when The Axe Lair came on my radar! This is definitely the most exciting activity that Upland has to offer. I hear that they are the first Axe throwing business to come to the Inland Empire! Woo hoo! What an incredible concept! My friend and I booked a 1 hour time slot online prior to coming here to ensure our lane's availability. Walk-ins are welcomed, but I just prefer to reserve my spot whenever it is an option. It was only $20/person per hour. The business is in a warehouse-like space with their own private lot. We were pleasantly surprised to see what a large space it was. There were plenty of lanes, a photo backdrop and benches in the center of the business with games like jumbo jenga, jumbo connect 4 and a bunch of other things. Speaking of photo backdrop, shoutout to Josh for helping me take a picture on the throne with the axe!! Anyways, immediately upon entering, we were instructed to read and sign their waivers. You know, don't hurt yourself on purpose and don't throw the axe at your friend, etc... Then we were led over to our lanes were they quickly explained the rules. Start out between the red and blue line. One foot must stay behind the red line when you throw. You throw together, and retrieve the axes together. Safety stuff!! We were also taught 2 methods of axe throwing, one with both hands and one with your dominant hand. The one hand axe-throwing was better for me. Our hour went by so fast!! My friend and I had a blast. The Axe Lair had a little booklet of Axe Throwing games to play and compete. Obviously in addition to the basic score more than the other person. Our favorite game was 21. The rings are marked 1, 2, 3, 4, and the bullseye is worth 6 points. If you hit special blue spots, you knock 5 points off your opponent. With 21, the goal is to reach 21, and exactly at 21. If you exceed the number, your last throw will not count. My friend and I were both at 20 and we both hit 1 on the same round so we tied. Those close games are the best games. Towards the end of your hour they will give you a 5 minute warning to wrap things up. I especially appreciate how the girl came over and offered to take a picture for us before we left. Wish I got her name, cause she was super nice! Not only was it fun, but it was an amazing work out. All of the effort to throw the axe, walking to retrieve the axe, and not to mention bending over and squatting down to pick up the failed attempts. First time here and was very pleasantly surprised! This is located in a business building in a quiet neighborhood and easy to find. Plenty of parking. Many lanes to throw in and a variety of cosmic vs well lit lanes. We signed waivers and were properly educated on how to throw and safety. Staff were nice and helpful. We made a reservation (but you can just walk in as well) as soon as you get there you have to sign a waiver, then one of the employees will take you over to your area and go over the instructions on how to throw the axe which was easier than I thought. They only have 2 rules- always throw behind the line, and wait until everyone has thrown their axe to go pick up your axe after a throw (duh! Safety...) Masks are suggested but not required. My friend and I were looking for something "fun" to do during this COVID-era. And because, you know, my Yelp profile bio says I'm "adventurous AF and love doing fun things." So we made reservations for an "Axe Throwing" adventure on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Axe throwing had always been on my bucket list. I called Axe Lair the day before and spoke to Mike who was professional and friendly. He suggested that I make reservations online since they're really busy on the weekends. Walk-ins are welcome, but he was right, the place was packed on Saturday afternoon. For an hour of axe throwing, it costs about $25 person (including tax). You can choose any available time slot. They also offer group rates (6 person minimum). It's $40/person for 2 hours of fun. Ages 10+. You can also book special events like birthday parties. Once you book and pay online, you'll receive an email confirmation. My friend and I arrived on Saturday just a few minutes before our time slot. Axe Lair is located in Upland, CA off Euclid Ave and E. 8th Street. There isn't any signage on the building, so you may think you're in the wrong place. Just pull into the lot and park. Parking is limited. The entrance is at the far end of the building where you'll see an unassuming "Axe Lair" sign on the ground pointing to their front door. Upon entry, you probably won't be greeted if it's busy. There's only one person working (it happens to be Mike, the same guy who answered the phone the day before). Mike was teaching a group the basics on axe throwing. It blew my mind because he was working by himself - teaching, cleaning, prepping each booth, answering the phones and checking people in). Surprisingly, he was really efficient and didn't even seem stressed or overwhelmed! Impressive! As I was saying, when you enter, just go straight to the iPads located to the right. Complete and sign the digital waiver. There's hand sanitizer next to the iPads. It should be noted that masks are not enforced here. If you're concerned about COVID, I do not suggest coming here. Or - wear your mask because none of the patrons were wearing masks. Mike was wearing a mask at all times. That being said, if you're looking for an axe-cellent adventure, I highly recommend Axe Throwing! This was my first time (surprisingly I'm not too bad) and I'm hooked!! I'm sexy and I throw it! LOL. Sorry, I had to :) I want to go back again very soon! Axe throwing is actually a great way to relieve stress! I know, it sounds dangerous, but fear not. The instructors like Mike explained the safety rules and showed us the basics on how to grip the axe - both two handed as well as single handed. He also shared a book containing a number of "axe games." And then, we were left on our own! Follow the rules and don't be an Axe-hole LOL :) If you have any interest in axe throwing, I highly recommend experiencing the thrill and rush of axe throwing at Axe Lair! The kids running the place need better training in customer service. I arrived on a sat nt about 20min before my appointment and hung out at one of the empty tables and awaited my friend. My friend showed about 10min after and when she saw me she walked over to say hello and two of the employees yelled from the register that she needed to fill out the waiver . How about you put your conversation on pause, walk over to the person, and inform them that they need to fill out a waiver. I wont be returning here nor will i be recommending this place. read more

We had a great time celebrating my birthday here! The staff is friendly and helpful. The previous location was nice, but this new location is an upgrade. It was a hot day, and the a/c and the fans were refreshing. They had plenty of cold refreshments available and they also have tables so we were able to spread out, bring in pizza from Paulie's Pizza, and my birthday cake. Axe throwing is absolutely fun and an awesome date idea. I invited my now fiance here on our 3rd date and obviously it went very well. However, they are sketchy about the axes. They had a large sign up saying they would charge us $25 if we broke their axe and made sure it said so on our paperwork too. Well sure enough on his very first throw, my fiancés already flimsy axe completely shattered on his 1st throw and they immediately charged him for it. He said he didn't fight them on it because we in the early stages of dating and didn't want to seem difficult. I'm only writing the review now because my sister just called me and told me the same thing happened with her bf a few weeks ago. He threw the ax that completely broke apart after the 1st throw and they charged him for it. So just watch out. Double check your axe and don't let them charge you if it breaks right away. read more

I made reservations here for a date on a Thursday night. I had only been axe throwing once before and it was an outdoor fair with a cage, so I figured this would be amazing. They had two sizes of axes so the guy got us one of each and gave us a slight tutorial before letting us throw. My axe was visibly dull and had many chips in it, it was a lot harder to hit these targets than when I went to the fair but it was still a fun experience. Now the worse part of all this is that it was not air conditioned!! It was so hot! I came here for a date so the last thing I wanted was to be soaked in sweat! They had giant fans but it didn't really help....luckily my date was a good sport, but I was definitely embarrassed! I was thinking of booking a team building event here for my team at work but I don't think we all want to go back to work this sweaty. Walking into axe lair was almost post apocalyptic in its intensity. Instantly I knew we were in the right place when I heard the heavy thunk of metal on wood. What I loved the most was that the vibe was dingy but the facility wasn't dirty. Nothing quite like clean grunge. We received lessons before we started our time and were able to throw a couple practice rounds while the instructor watched and helped correct our form. Then it was off to the races! They had some beverages and a few food options but nothing too exotic, just beer and snacks. We weren't there for the food though so I can't be too critical of it. Throwing axes into the wall was therapeutic and something that I would definitely do again. First off, it is pretty sketchy coming here at night because of the location. There isn't much else around here so it feels a bit creepy to park in the lot. The entry door is small and in the corner of the parking lot. Once you get inside it is pretty dark. There are a lot of different stalls for games. I have been to two other axe-throwing places in the past so I am definitely comparing. I have seen places where there is seating for the other members of the party who are not actively throwing. This place does not have that and management seems to have crowded a lot of stalls next to each other, so if there are parties next to you, you will be sharing space very closely with one another and there won't be a place for everyone to sit and watch. The one pro of coming here is that the target is not painted on the wall, but is instead projected via overhead projector. This allows for multiple different types of games rather than just the one typical concentric circle target. I do think their venue could use some maintenance. The axes seemed dull and the walls were very worn out making the throwing experience less fun. This place was alright but I'm not sure if I would go again. I went with one other person and we went through all the games with time left to spare so we ended up leaving early even though we paid for a full hour. I am not sure if they have food- I didn't see a kitchen. They do sell a small selection of drinks from a fridge they have up front (water, soda, beer, seltzer). read more

Pretty cool place to kill an hour. Would definitely recommend going with a group because one hour long of axe throwing is a lot to do on your own or with 1 other person. It's a good shoulder workout though! Located in a warehouse where one side is a gym, so walk to the door furthest from the street. It is fun, but the boards are pretty banged up. You could barely see some numbers or the outlines of the circles for the points. There are tons of wood chips on the ground with broken up cardboard with holes in it. Also broken wire between lanes so the axe from one lane can fall into yours. They could definitely put more effort into maintaining it. They have an area to play games if you need to wait for a lane, and they serve alcohol. Highly recommend making reservations online since it gets busy. COVID Precautions: I don't even know if they have any. The workers were really nice, but they aren't wearing masks. Obviously they need to stand close to you to show you how to throw the axe, so it would be appreciated if they wore a mask at least at that time. Especially if they see you wearing one, mutual respect please! Also they don't clean the axes in between uses. He literally grabbed the axes from the previous customers and walked us to the same lane and handed us the same axes. Date night with the bf, thought we'd try something new. This was a fun and unique experience. I will say that my lower abdomen and arms were super sore the following morning but it was worth it. As we were throwing axes we thought what a great team building activity this would be for co-workers. We also thought this would be a great family night out (the kids in my family are in their mid - late teens, I don't know the policy for children younger than that). Finally, I thought if the bf and I got into a fight this would be a great way to release some anger and avoid jail! lol! This place was fun, the staff was really nice. They have games you can play once you get the hang of the actual throwing of your axe. It's near downtown Upland so if you want to grab some food or a drink after it's convenient. I will say it can be a difficult to find so I'd try to be there about 10 minutes early in case you end up going in circles (like we did). read more

I used to like this place back when it opened but has gone down hill significantly. Whatever you do don't use your own axes as there is zero protection for them if they fall and it will completely wreck your handle and blade as it's pure cement underneath. At one point there was plywood at least but it's completely shredded and they don't bother to replace it. The projectors while I'm sure they save the employees time make it impossible for pictures, and take away from the vibe. The employees seemed bothered when asked to do anything even simple things like spray the bone dry boards. If you are desperate I guess you can waste your money here but I really don't recommend it. Drive a bit further to one of the other facilities in the area which I am sure will provide a much more positive experience. read more

There was plenty of space for us to all sit while not throwing. It's a little intimidating at first but after you get the hang of it, it can get competitive and fun! The staff was helpful too at teaching you the proper way to throw it for your own benefit. The location also has a safety metal net around each throwing area to ensure that no ax flies out and hurt anyone. They play pretty decent music and have some snacks available for you while at your visit. $20 per person, so definitely not something to do on the daily but could be a great first date type of spot. read more

We came as a walk-in this afternoon. We arrived around 3:30 PM, just the two of us. The front desk check-in person was extremely nice and asked us if it was our first time there. We said yes, and he asked us to sign the waivers so that he can get us started. He walked us over to a stall and showed us how to position ourselves, how to hold the axe and how to aim properly. He then asked us to go through a trial run and gave us pointers so that he can then allow us to do it ourselves. They have a variety of games to play, which were super fun! We got to choose our own nicknames, which were clever. My boyfriend picked NICE AXE for me and I chose for him RELAXE (he's always saying that lol). We then played some games and had the area for an hour. They had some beer available for purchase and we even walked around and played connect four once we were done with our 1 hour game. The only reason I'm docking 1 star is because it was EXTREMELY hot inside. We were definitely sweating up in there. Overall though, cool experiences and great customer service! read more
