Took forever to get me back to this place. Hate it more than ever. For two very specific reasons this time around. First. A bagel with butter should have butter on it. What I received was a bagel that someone cut in half and then whispered the word "butter" on to it. No shit, there were parts of the bagel that was DRY! Ha! So these A-holes don't want to pay the 3-5% on card purchases, which is fine, BUT, you can pay them the $2.00 for the honor of getting your cash to pay them. When you're getting ready for a long drive and someone says "let's just grab something to eat on the way", that person should be incapacitated for the rest of the trip. Here we are at some crappy hotel in the middle of nowhere New Jersey, trying to make it back to Canada, and the last thing I want to do is leave my breakfast up to chance. I lost that vote however. So we're driving for 45mins without seeing anything that resembles food, when we see "McDonald's 15 miles". I would rather die then go to a McDonald's but we turn off and start following that road. 30mins later someone's pretty sure we missed the McDonald's. It's at this point that I NEED a coffee and I'm prepared to stop at the next "whatever". That's when I spot her, the Bagel Station. At this point I'm not hoping for much, it could be the dirtiest bagel joint in the world for all I care, but as I pull into the driveway I notice, hey, there's a lot of people here. A lot of people is a good sign. So we're waiting in line and we finally make it into the place and it feels as though we just struck gold. There is a giant wall of the freshest, biggest, most delicious looking bagels you've ever seen. And they have coffee! Now here's where it gets weird. We're still in line waiting to get our hands on one of these delicious bagels when I start noticing some of the pictures on the wall. It appears to be the owner of the place, and he's hanging out with James Gandolfini, who happened to sign the picture "Best Bagels in NJ". Then there was another one, but this time with Tom Cruise! Where the hell are we?!? I'll tell you where, Bagel Heaven. Needless to say, the bagels were AMAZING! I regret not buying more. We even enjoyed some bagel chips on the ride home. We dodged a huge golden-arch-shaped bullet by stopping here. The bagels were fast, spongy, delicious, stacked high with turkey, and served with kettle chips and a soda for six bucks. They were wrapped with conscientious smiles and small town sensibility and courtesy, with New York quality. After writing a review of Action Park, err, I mean Mountain Creek I decided to go right ahead into my review for this spot. Signed pictures of MICHAEL JORDAN, (greatest basketballer to ever live) TIGER WOODS (greatest golfer on earth) Brad Pitt ( Perrenial A-list Star ) and Mr. Sopranos himself James Gandolphini. No, not in Alpine NJ. In SPARTA a little upper middle class enclave nearly an hour from New York City. (Some one explained to me that a lot of the big time celebs have a second or fourteenth house in Sparta when they want to lay low from all the limelight. I don't know how true that it. ) Nevertheless the place feels friendly and has a personality of its own. The staff was so cheerful and enjoying their job even when it got busy. Let me stress this. The Bagel Station was my salvation! I was enduring a long boring drive to Newark airport. Out of the blue, as if by divine intervention, appears the Bagel Station. Yes! Authentic New Jersey bagels! This place had a very wide selection of on site prepared bagels. Everything a good bagel shop usually has and more, even rainbow bagels, though I was afraid to order one. I had a nova lox and cream cheese bagel for breakfast, and also grabbed a lunchtime bagel because they promised overstuffed deli sandwiches. The lox bagel was good--excellent onion bagel, but so so nova lox, not much flavor and not much freshness. The Takeaway turkey and Swiss on garlic bagel, however, did not disappoint! It weighed about a pound, which was a good sign. Indeed, when it got to be lunch time on my flight from Newark, I was one happy camper and the object of some jealousy from my seatmate. "OMG where did you get that thing!' He asked. -I just smiled and munched the delicious garlic bagel packed with honey turkey, about an inch thick, tasty Swiss cheese, and ample mayo... There really is something amazing about these bagels. They're so fresh and crisp. Great flavors and exceptional service. They're packed in the morning so call ahead! I was in the area going to the Abbey Glen pet cemetery. Everything sucked that morning and I remember passing this place and it said the Best Bagels in NJ. Yeah Right??!! Whenever I see a place that makes this claim, it's almost a guarantee that they're overrated or they legitimately suck. On the way home from the pet cemetery we stopped here because we were starving. I expected the bagel and coffee (which said the best coffee in nj on the container) to taste like cardboard and black water, respectively. Happy to say my expectations were wrong!! I had a Black Russian toasted bagel with walnut raisin cream cheese and it was the best bagel I've had in NJ (or anywhere else). The coffee was pretty good too.
