Six tired and hungry adults decided to try this tiny restaurant on a Sunday at noon. The place is small, only about 12 tables, but we were pleasantly surprised at the food and service. We ordered a cheeseburger with fries, shrimp basket with potato salad, loaded baked potato, sausage sandwich with pinto beans, chopped brisket sandwich with fries and a shrimp platter with coleslaw and pinto beans. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious; portions are large and the waitress was very efficient and friendly. Our only gripe is they were out of banana pudding! Nice small place with friendly staff & good food. My husband & I didn't eat any of the meat plates but saw going out to other customers & looked good. My husband had the Philly Steak sandwich. The bread was nicely toasted, meat was prime rib slices with grilled veggies. He choose slaw as his side & very pleased as not tons of mayo or sugar. The slaw had nice pieces of cabbage as well as shredded pieces. I had the Frito pie with chopped brisket & pinto beans. It came with shredded cheese. We have been eating at The Shack for years and I thought they deserved my review for all the good meals we have had there. Their bar b que is very good as well as the hamburgers, but I always recommend their fried shrimp. I know it's strange to go to a bar b que place and order shrimp but it's some of the best and freshest in town. I've lived in Rockport most of my life and I'm so tired of most of the local restaurants serving the same old frozen sea food you can get in Midland. Tried this place for the first time today. The atmosphere is relaxed and clean. The staff is sweet. The only complaint I have is our waitress didn't greet us. She came up handed us menus and asked what we wanted to drink. That's the only star deducted. The food was amazing. The BBQ was smokey and well seasoned. Cooked to perfection. This was the best place I had eaten after spending 4th of July week in Rockport/Fulton. I ordered the cheeseburger and it was really good! The fries were delicious too. Others in our party had the stuffed baked potato with brisket and one had the frito pie. The kids enjoyed grilled cheese sandwich and they also loved the yummy steak fries. The big guy behind the counter had a great attitude, even though they were very busy. Lots of local to-go orders too, but he never missed a beat. This little cafe has it going on!! Parking is off the highway and is ample room for cars, trucks, trucks with boats, and even RV's. It has steps to the main entrance plus a good ramp for disabled people. The inside is small with about 10-12 tables with condiments on each one. The restrooms are gender specific and clean with paper towels for drying your hands. The menu is loaded with a large bbq and seafood variety for the hungry man or the light eater; plus a children's selection. They have a big screen TV in the corner to enjoy. I asked for the big potato with bbq. The waitress brought it quick and it was a large portion. It had a small tub of white/yellow cheese sprinkles, a tub of bacon bits, three tubs of Land o' Lakes butter and a tube of Daisy real dairy sour cream. It was incredible good!! And I will probably go get that meal again but as a take-out so I have a longer time to eat the whole potato at home. My sweet tea came with a lime wedge in a big glass. My waitress was working three tables after I came in. She asked me 4 times if I needed anything. And she had a nice melodic voice, pleasant to hear over and over. I liked that she was so attentive!! She made the dining experience well balanced and like "homey." I paid with my card and left the tip on the table. I highly recommend this cafe, but I suggest that your first visit be when the "crowd" has dissipated. But who knows what you may hear in that place, maybe the best fish tale that you could share with your grandchildren. I can hardly wait to return and try the calamari and other seafood selections. Went here for lunch going to try out a new barbecue place other than Macs. The dining room is apparently closed. The sign in the window says open it even states their hours but the note on the door says they are closed for an unknown reason until later in the month. The only way to eat here is to go through the drive to and take it back or sit under an awning on picnic tables in the 96 degree heat. Not wanting to do that I decided not to eat here pretty disappointed the dining room was closed. Will have to try again next time I'm in Rockport read more

The offerings at The Shack are varied. We didn't dine there for smoked or BBQ meat. They offer fresh local flounder plates with two sides for around $13! After spending more at another restaurant right on the water for fish that turned out to be farm raised in Vietnam. Our meals at the Shack were great tasting, and reasonably priced. I asked other patrons if they enjoyed their ribs and brisket. Their answer was absolutely! I recommend The Shack enthusiastically! read more

We keep trying this place and they just do not get it. They do not bother to start your phone order until you get there. Portions are offensively small... especially on the fish. I like to leave cash on the table for the server. I left 20% as I normally do. I paid the bill with a credit card. When the credit card bill came the Shack had added a $5 tip without my permission. Of course I can't know this for days or weeks after the transaction. In my mind they assumed I'd stiffed the server. They were mistaken. From now on I'll note "cash tip on table" and the amount on their receipt as well as mine. I noted it on mine in this case as is my custom. Some restaurants include the tip in the original charge which eliminates this type of problem. After being in the area for 3 years and driving by this place umpteen times, we decided to give it try. We were in the mood for burgers and being that it has rained all day we were wanting something to bring back home so after reviewing the menu we decided on the Big Bubba - which covered the burger aspect and the opportunity for trying the BBQ as well.
