Al fresco dining, basically in a rustic countryside setting, basically on the Cape. Basically. There's nothing outstanding about Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern, yet nothing dissuasive. It's innocuous - an everytavern catered to olde thymey tastes and bayside expectations. The beer is brewed locally, with a loose, neither sweet, neither bitter, Cape Cop Amber that proved to be non-craft drinkable and fairly inexpensive. The chowder (is it clam on the menu?) is mostly krab, yes Krab, but it's got a solid balance of cream, sherry and briny bits. Edible, somewhat enjoyable, just not memorable. If you decide to try, get the bowl over the cup - it's only a dollar extra. Rain forced us from the outside to a stark, stale dining room, so stay under the sun (weather permitting). Service is friendly, I doubt this place gets crowded and it's ideal for a big group bent on conversation in the presence of passable prandials and chilled cervezas.

Having grown up in Barnstable and having deep appreciation for Barnstable Village, I had high hopes for my first time eating at the Tavern with my family. On a Friday night at 5:30pm with live music on the patio, it was impossible to get a table outside. Since the musician was very popular, I was not surprised nor upset. The decor inside is older, but clean and we got a nice table for all 4 of us. Our waiter looked like he was fresh off a shift at the Tower of Terror at Disney. But, he was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, he disappeared toward the end of our meal and we were inside for 1.5 hours (and my family eats pretty fast!). We ordered our desserts to go, and they came out about 15 minutes later. My dish (I believe haddock) was pretty good and so was the chowder I had as an appetizer. All of us at the table were happy with our food and the portions (just right). The prix fixe menu is definitely the way to go. It's ultimately a toss up if you are choosing between the Dolphin and the Tavern. If it's a nice evening, you may prefer eating outside at the Tavern. The Dolphin has a much nicer, classic interior. p.s. According to the Barnstable Village Haunted Tour, this restaurant is haunted! But, I didn't see any ghosts on my visit :-(

The steak was fantastic. 4 of the 8 of us had different steaks. However, one of us had the lasagna, and the rest of us finished it. Some of the best lasagna I've ever had, aside from my mother-in-law's. Slightly upscale place for the laid-back Cape, but we felt comfortable dining there in shorts and t-shirts. Don't miss this place when driving through Barnstable!

If you want food, you have to time it right. We got there on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm, knowing that they closed at 2. Meals were not available at that time, nor were cocktails. The only food available was snacks and pastries in a display on the counter, and most of these were already gone as well. Wine was still available in 3oz. and 5oz. pours, and we found a couple that we really enjoyed. We received fantastic service at the counter, and we were checked on several times while we were seated (we were lucky enough to get the plush chairs by the window). Their full wine list is extensive and interesting. Depending on from what direction you approach, navigation might give you a very scenic route along the circular "road." Parking is spread out in that area, and one-way arrows exist, but not enough of them.

While I can appreciate the choose your own adventure / tasting concept and benefits of moving at your own pace, wine tasting is something where I'd prefer to have more of a personal touch. The storytelling and personal connection was missing, and made the experience feel a bit hollow. The space was a nice open hang and there's snacks and games, and there is staff there, but the experience made me realize I prefer a guided human tour for some things, wine tasting being one of them. Prices also snuck up on us a bit, it's easy to lose count of how many you've had with the card reader. I was also a bit bummed to find that if you liked a wine you cannot purchase a bottle on site. But I'm glad I tried it and had fun.

For an appetizer, we shared the sweet potato tempura stuffed with scallop and crab. It was light, flavorful, and beautifully prepared--an excellent start to the meal. For our entrées, the swordfish was wonderfully fresh and packed with flavor. While the accompanying potatoes were a bit dry and under-seasoned, the fish itself was outstanding. The seared tuna was cooked to perfection, with a beautiful crust and tender center, and the noodles complemented it perfectly. Fin has the charm of a historic home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The bar is cozy and welcoming, though on the smaller side, so arriving early is a good idea. We were seated upstairs at a corner table, which provided plenty of privacy and made for a wonderfully romantic dining experience in a quaint and intimate setting. Our waitress seemed a little reserved at first but quickly warmed up and became attentive and engaging throughout the evening. Dinner for two, including tip, came in just under $200, putting it on the higher end of the price range, but the quality of the food, cocktails, and atmosphere made it well worth it. We will be back to try the oyster stew.

We ended up there on a Wed (happened to be our anniversary) so I only experienced the à la carte menu. Highly recommend reservations as it's a small restaurant. Parking is limited but you can park in the lot of a nearby furniture store ( across the street and a half a block east). Our server ( Maeve) is very pleasant and helpful. All staff members we encountered greeted us and seem happy to be working there. Not a full bar but many nice choices. We enjoyed Pinot noir from Oregon. We had delicious oysters, a fresh salad, Portuguese clams, and a swordfish dish. Also had a "fancy" Hoodsie dessert that was quite good. All our items were first rate. Other dishes served at neighboring tables also looked great. Noise level in restaurant is very tolerable. Pricing seemed very reasonable given quality. **** It merits stating that this restaurant( Lune) is well staffed for the number of customers they serve. The meal was almost perfect--nearly all of the courses were introduced expertly and executed with haute precision. The prix fixe menu is offered on weekends, and it looked, as you can see, exciting. My favorite courses were the caviar and dessert. The white asparagus course was inspired and delicious, though it needed another minute or two to achieve a perfect texture. The sous vide veal breast was a miss. The ratio of meat to fat skewed too heavily toward fat. The diners I observed around me at the bar all left fat on their plates. That said, the sauce and spinach accompaniments were delicious. The bread, optional caviar, and dessert courses were brilliant. The wine pairings fell a bit flat, I thought--they were all good, but none compelled me to ask for more or to see the labels for later purchase. I loved watching the culinary theater from the bar seating. It was a bit more hectic than I recall from my last visit, but it was clear that the staff were working hard and collaborating effectively. A talented local artist's work on the walls here could definitely elevate the ambiance.
