These guys are the best! I took my 2000 vintage Bianchi Milano in to get a detached derailleur cable fixed. This is not actually the most straightforward job as the rear gear hub requires special attention that not every bike shop can provide. They did the job quickly, efficiently and at a VERY generous price! I had an electrical problem with my EMTB. I love this bike, but it is no longer sold or supported in the USA. I took it to the Bike Connection and they were able to order the part amd fix the bike in less time than they had quoted me. My bike broke down and this shop was the closest one that I could find. It turns out that it was probably the best option I could have come across because the folks working at the shop were so kind and quick to help me out. I was in a rush and they made sure I was attended to right away. He didn't even ask me to pay anything to fix my chain and went the extra mile to make it run smoothly, ensuring I had what I needed to be on my way. The man servicing my bike fixed it so fast too and identified the problem immediately. He was extremely nice and honest about what my bike needed updates on and where it was fine as is. I definitely trust their expertise and plan to come back if my bike needs maintenance. They were very knowledgeable but also genuine, and I can tell that my experience at the shop was not unique. This WAS the place to go for tandems - because "Wisco" was dah man for sales and repair of the things - and he would never oversell you, nor fix what wasn't broken - he did some extra work without charge on my old tandem because I didn't do it right myself and it bugged him. Now he's leaving - to the Stanford Campus Bike Shop for godssake! Like other TBO's before him... more to go? *The guys in repair are still great in my opinion, and whatever they are sneaking into Jim's water - keep it up - he's become great with customers! I have biked past this place and never knew they existed. You see, Foothill Expressway goes past them in and underpass, so if I didn't need a CO2 cartidge and I didn't Yelp it, I would not have know about them. They were very friendly and helpful. About a year ago I purchased a $40 bell. It was the wrong size for my handlebars so I brought it back and asked if they could order me the correct size replacement. No problem they said, should take about ten days, they'll call me when it arrives. I called about 2 weeks later and was told it had not arrived and will be called back when it does. Called back about 2 months later with the same story. I checked to make sure they had my correct number. It has now been about a year. I have saved $6000 to buy a new mountain bike. But not from these clowns. I'm going to Folsom Bikes. read more

Best service department ever :) A number of times I've had a mechanical out on the road, e.g., snapped shifter cable, have limped over to Bicycle Outfitter, and no matter how busy they are, they've fixed me up and saved an otherwise ruined ride. We went in to repair a flat tire on our (very old) Specialized bike. Justin in the repair department was very polite and walked us through the costs. Without being pushy, he presented other recommended repairs and tune-ups (which seemed reasonable given the age of the bike) and gave us a cost estimate. Give the cost of the repairs and the age of the bike, we decided to forgo the repair and decided to buy the bike. The bike buying experience was very pleasant as well. All the sales people seemed knowledgeable and friendly. Jake (I think) and Chris were especially solicitous and patiently helped me with getting several bikes ready for test rides. We ended up purchasing a Specialized model along with several accessories. The staff fitted the bike with the accessories in a short amount of time. Highly recommended. read more

Visited the Bicycle Outfitter again today because I wanted to purchase some new socks. Not very exciting, but were they disappointed? Not in the least. The guys there were really friendly, allowing me to park my bike inside (the mechanic put it on a stand) while I shopped. I needed a different size and they checked inventory for me. Pretty great service just for a pair of socks! I love coming in here and looking at the beautiful bikes, great variety of uncommon clothing, accessories, etc. The guys told me that I'm welcome to change and fill my water bottles with their filtered water. If I needed to air up my tires, they have a convenient compressor right outside to use anytime at no charge. Many clubs and individuals begin and end their rides here and now you know why. It's an oasis for all of us out enjoying the roads and building our fitness levels. read more

Our weekend trip to the Outfitter was really disappointing, and took an hour and a half. We went to the Outfitter because my husband wanted an expensive new shifter set up. The young man helping my husband did not understand what he was being asked, and struggled to admit it. Finally, after at least 45 minutes, I said, "why don't we leave and come back when Dave Prion is here." At which point, a very nice woman explained that he left earlier in the year, and that she was now the manager. (Side note: I had noticed that I hadn't seen him in a while, but didn't realize Dave was gone.) After some discussion, she realized that things weren't going well with our interactions with her young sales guy, and encouraged him to get help. He FINALLY asked Jerry, the very experienced and knowledgeable technician for help. Jerry stepped up and did help my husband figure out what he needed, and with his help we placed an order for $2500 worth of bike gear. After that was rung up, I bought a pair of shorts. I asked for a discount on the shorts, to which the young salesman said, "I can't give you any discount because I am not authorized." What an incredibly stupid and clueless answer. After making us wait for nearly an hour before finally calling Jerry and then having that take another 30 minutes, and on top of that taking into consideration that we'd just spent a fair bit of money, that young man should have taken the clue and given me a token discount. We would have felt better about the whole experience. Instead, we left very annoyed, and did not feel at all like valued customers. Next time I will certainly buy my shorts on line. We have spent loads of money at the Outfitter over the years. If this is how they are going to run the place from here out -- with inexperienced people who do not seem to have much of a passion for bicycles or customers ... well, I'm not so sure we will continue our patronage. The mechanics are still good. That said, other than the manager -- who does seem to know bikes, but didn't help with the debacle -- they did not seem to have anyone in sales with a clue. NOTE: I am impressed that when the Outfitters went to replace Dave Prion (who really can't be replaced), they attracted a female manager. She is nice, and does seem knowledgable. She did not, however, help our situation other than to direct the young sales clerk to get help from Jerry. read more

First visit here was to get help with a Giant bike chain and was helped by a young man with glasses in the repair shop. He instantly helped with great attitude with no charge (literally took 5 min.). After the friendly service, I came back to get my old Specialized bike back in riding shape and received the same friendly great service. Also, Chris in the bike store was super helpful setting me up with an exchange on a helmet that was a bit too snug. The moment I walked in he instantly had everything ready for my exchange and took the time to explain the rules about helmet sizing and made me feel comfortable and happy about the larger size helmet. I would defiantly recommend this local shop to get any repairs or if you're looking into purchasing accessories or gear. read more

I've definitely found my LBS (local bike shop). Why did I choose Bicycle Outfitter? Because they made a mistake. No one is perfect. What makes the difference to me is how someone responds when things aren't perfect. In this case, I had asked for the bike to be ready on a certain day. When I called, the guy who answered said there were parts on order. I started to get annoyed. Then he kept reading and said, oh, this was supposed to be ready today! I will have the guy working on it call you as soon as he gets here. So the guy called - an hour before promised. He read the papers in front of him, realized that they had waited a bit longer than necessary to order the parts, and the parts had not arrived when he'd hoped they would. So he started thinking of ways to get the parts, and asked me when my drop-dead date was. I could manage to wait 2 more days (needed the bike for a big ride). To make a long story short, he worked with me on the phone, and called me by mid-day on the day we'd agreed on, and had it ready. He went over all that had been done in detail, explained where problems had been found & how he'd fixed them, told me what he'd done to help prepare for the upcoming ride (lots of climbing and descending, so: brakes). Most places can do a really good job almost all the time. But what puts a place over the top is having a calm, responsible, non-defensive way of dealing with the occasional unexpected problem. Great group of people who run this business! If you have a doubt whether customer friendly businesses still exist, this place is a prime example that yes they still do! I have had to go to them for a couple of things. While both were relatively simple requests, they still handled both with a smile and very minimal costs (did the first request for free, the second they billed only $5). Yes surprising just $5. I needed bike repair today, Sunday. Bicycle Outfitters was open today in both the sales and repair departments. They are following recommended Covid19 guidelines very well. I'd just brought my wheel because the chain came off this morning and jammed between the lowest (biggest) cog and the spokes and after that the chain would not run freely. Locking at one point of the chain. Not a pro, dunno why. Repair guy saw me immediately, diagnosed a badly worn cassette. I bought a new one and he installed it immediately. I could not fit the whole bike in the car but I'll go back so he can survey my chain rings which must be pretty bad as well. I was so pleased they were open today until 5PM and he could do the repair while I waited which took very little time. Excellent service. read more

I just had a really terrible experience at a small bicycle place "The Bicycle Outfitter" in Loyola Corners, Los Altos. I took my bike in last Sunday to have the tires checked out and fixed and the cable lubed. A nice Asian guy named Mike helped me. My experience with him was very good. I wanted to support a small business. I got a call the following Friday that the bike was done. I had a friend drop me off so I could ride it home. I go into the service area, there is a tall, sour, graying guy working with someone and their bike. I wait at the counter and then he looks at me and asks what I want. I told him and also mentioned my helmet is cracked. He said trash it ... I said I would like to buy a helmet but that I didn't need anything really .... and he pointed to the sales floor (did not let me finish my sentence) and says $40 bucks. I'll go get your bike. Well that got me a little ticked, but I went to the helmets, picked one out, it was too big and they didn't have another in my size. I went back to service and the guy was busy with another bike guy (these were clearly the real deal, fancy bikes, fancy little outfits, fance helmets and shoes, there were 3 of them), whereas I was just someone who wanted her tires fixed, to pay and get out of the way. So I stood there for a long time and then just wrote out the check and held it up so I could hand it to him and leave. He immediately tells me they don't take checks and when I pointed out there was no one to help me he got fairly obnoxious and sarcastic and said "I'll take the check" and told me I was clearly having a bad day etc. I told him not to be a smart ass and just give me my receipt and he threw the whole thing at me. I tore off the bottom copy, left it and left the store. Clearly this bike place is so good that it doesn't need to practice civil customer service nor does it need new customers like me, a "ride for some exercise but not usually more than10 mile rider. I had planned to buy several other things, but I guess not. I would recommend you not patronize this store. There were very few sales people (on a Saturday of all days) and the service guy was obnoxious and not helpful at all. read more

I'm in tears as I write this. Happy tears. I just picked up my Dad's bike from The Bicycle Outfitter, after it sat in my garage for the past 22 years, following his death. I couldn't bear to throw the bike out. He loved it. I decided to take it to The Bicycle Outfitter, to see if they could make it rideable again. The bike turned out great! Better than I expected, and it is a joy to ride. I only hope that my Dad is watching down and smiling, that his five speed Raleigh touring bike now has a new life as a fixed-gear upright cruiser. Might be a good shop for newer bikes, but not the kind of place where you will find older components. I went in to get the gears tuned, they were slipping. I had to come back because the adjustment did not 'stick' as it were, and I had the same exact problem the next day. I went back, and once again, the fix did not last. I went to Outfitters because I had moved and wanted a shop closer to home. I ended up going back to Palo Alto. I had to track down my old mechanic, John, who now works at the bike shop on the Stanford U. campus. The staff at Outfitters were relatively friendly, but one of the mechanics was sort of snobby about my older bike. I have over 10,000 miles on a Giant brand touring/commuter bike. I purposely let it look a little beat up so that the theft factor goes down, but I have reliable, quality components. The mechanic scolded me, asked who ripped me off, selling me an expensive drive train and rims and such. Most of those things I was given at a great discount on at Palo Alto Bicycles exactly because they had respect for my bike. I did not appreciate being disparaged for what were conscious choices about my bike. read more

We rented a medium tandem here on a fine January day. First, the fact that you can rent something slightly exotic like a tandem in this litigious age was already great. Second, the all-day rate was quite reasonable ($50) --- aren't there kayak shops that are charging that much for a two-seater kayak for just a couple of hours? Third, the bike was in nicely-tuned condition. Fourth, the staff puzzled over and patiently worked on swapping in my pedals despite the fact that it eventually turned out that there was something glommed onto my pedal threads (probably from a past rental) that was preventing proper insertion. Everyone on staff was super nice and there were plenty of high-end Trek Madones and other gear to drool on while they were sorting out the pedal issue. Before you rush over to Bicycle Outfitter to rent a tandem, I have to caution: (1) you should be a thoroughly experienced rider of regular bikes if you are going to try being the steerer on a tandem, (2) know your routes and pick an easy one with wide, high-quality shoulders and modest grades for your first time out, (3) the steerer will have an easier time balancing the bike if he/she is significantly heavier than the stoker, and (4) plan to communicate a lot --- even little but very important things, like which leg you are planning to put down when coming to a stoplight. The 10+ foot-wide shoulder on Foothill starting right from the shop is a good place to gain some road feel. From there, we rode up into Portola Valley, and then took Mountain Home into Woodside and La Cañada almost to the Sawyer Camp Trail (which is currently inaccessible using the usual approach from the south due to construction). The ride totaled 50 miles, and made for an excellent day. read more

I've dealt with the establishment her e since we moved to the Bay Area in 1989. Bought numerous bikes for our daughter, a tandem, and other bikes. Took my bike, 1973 Zeus, in for an overhaul. I was told that it was unsafe because the headset was wrong and that the bike shop that installed it, should have not have done it. The only problem is that it was Bicycle Outfitter prior to the "asset transfer" in 2004. In general, I had misrepresentation from the repair shop and then from the manager, Dave, that it was before my time and we have no records and we are only responsible for things after we took over. Just wish, I knew that before my wife spent $3K last year for a new bike. Last bike and the tubes last week are the last purchases! Other than the attitude and misrepresentations this week, I have had great dealings with them since 89. read more

I got my first bike here (a Trek Pilot), and while I've since moved onto brands they don't carry (Santa Cruz, Klein) , I still drive an hour to get my bikes serviced here and I also recommend it to any friend who's looking for a bike. The people in the shop are extremely knowledgeable, and their prices are very reasonable. When I wanted a bike fitting checked (with a bike I bought in another store!), they had no problem at all- Mark even stayed a half hour after closing to help me out. When I wanted my mountain bike overhauled after a bad crash, they did a great job and for an extremely reasonable price. On weekends, I sometimes start my rides all the way down in Los Altos so I can swing in and ask about how to fix something like a "weird clicking", and they'll just pop the bike up, check it out, show me what's up, then send me on my merry way without asking for anything. It's great to have a bike place where the people who work there are really friendly, smart, and always happy to help. There are too many places where they microcharge you, are catty about giving any sort of advice, or try to guilt you into buying what you don't need. read more

I'm usually concerned about the small bike stores because they usually size you up once you come in and are ultra-elitist. Not this place. They have a decent selection of mid-range and high-end bikes. I haven't bought from them yet, but I feel no pressure from them to buy. The best thing about this place? It's 6 miles from where I live, and being right off the Foothill Expressway, it's a convenient place to get your tires pumped up. They have a pressurized valve right outside for you to use! read more

I have a two part review for this shop. First, the good. My boyfriend and I both bought our bikes at this shop and were very happy with the customer service we received from our sales folks. I was really excited to find a shop that provided good customer service and was prepared to make this my "go-to" shop until..... I brought my bike in for simple service and got it back with my bike fit completely ruined. They moved the saddle back, it was all the way nose up, and my seat posted was completely dropped. There were no markings on where everything had been set and no one in the shop said anything about having to move my saddle to perform the service. I'm upset about this because my bike fit had cost me $200 and then this shop cost me another $80 to get fixed what they messed up. I wrote an email with feedback on this matter to the owner a month ago and received no response. Customer service is very important to me and I choose what businesses to patronize largely based on that. There are so many bike shops in the Bay Area competing for business that I thought perhaps this shop would have been a little more responsive to my complaint. But since they weren't, I'll take mine and my boyfriend's business elsewhere and will not recommend this shop to anyone that asks me for recommendations. read more
