If you own a tandem, mark this place. I drive about 40 miles door to door from home to these guys (that's about an HOUR by Bay Area traffic standards, folks) whenever my Otis Guy freak tandem needs love or fixin. In the very-quirky and demanding performance tandem community, this shop has a stellar reputation that precedes them, and I must say they've lived up to it each time I had them work on our rig. Far too many primo shops in Oakland and SF, though very capable service shops for all sorts of other bikes, just haven't given me a level of confidence to believe/know that our tandem would be getting -- or got -- expert TANDEM care. Bicycle Outfitters? Fuhgeddaboutit. They didn't sweat the weird stuff that other shops just plain refused to even try to fix/maintain (e.g. Magura hydraulic calipers, Arai drum). One thing I have mixed feelings about: when they're done servicing your bike, they hang it outside the shop like butcher meat. :-/ read more

I bought my first road bike here this past weekend after looking and test riding bikes at several shops. My wife and I were both looking to buy road bikes, and I've got to say that Virginia was great. She took a lot of time to talk to us and find out what we were looking for. She gave us good advice and took a lot of time to get the test bikes fitted properly. When they didn't have the right size of a particular model in stock for my wife, Virginia made some phone calls and located the bike at Palo Alto Bicycles and referred her over there. (As it turns out, the shops are owned by the same people, but I was still impressed by the help.) As for me, I finally picked out a sweet '09 Orbea Onix TDF. I could have kept going around to different shops and riding bikes forever, but I felt like I found the right bike at the right shop. Five stars for Virginia's help. Minus one star for the long time it took to actually buy the bike and get everything set up. Virginia got pulled away from helping me about a dozen times to ring up little purchases or answer questions from customers. If they'd had one more person working the counter, things would have gone much more smoothly. I don't have much experience with the service department yet, so more reviews on that later. read more

Everything about my experience with them was great. I initially called to ask questions about a specific bike I wanted, and after being told the wait time for that bike and similar ones due to production stopping in the time of Covid I decided to come in and look at what they had. Johnny couldn't have been more helpful when I arrived, and amazingly the exact bike I wanted was returned that morning! After a test ride I actually chose another bike (no pressure or upselling - I asked them for another bike to compare) and the mechanisms and operation of the bike was thoroughly explained to me. I was really happy with the purchase. When I returned a week later to buy some accessories they actually discouraged me from some of my choices, explaining I didn't really need certain things, but what I did end up buying they installed for me on the spot and answered all my novice questions happily. This place is truly a neighborhood gem and you rarely find this kind of customer service anymore. Thanks to all the guys there who helped me - I'm a customer for life now! read more

While I know very little about bikes, I'm slowly learning thanks to visiting a lot of different bike shops in my quest for a first road bike for me and my boyfriend. So far, I've been to about 5 shops in the area, and The Bicycle Outfitter is at the moment my favorite. And this is coming from someone who feels terribly uncomfortable at ritzy shops dedicated to sports I know little about. Here's why... most of the other shops we've been to have eh or terrible on the customer service front. Here, you walk in on a Saturday and they're busy, so it's understandable they can't help you out right away. We walked in about an hour until closing unsure we would even get to test ride a bike. After asking the manager Dave Prion for help, he sent us off to look for the service department guy Preston for help. The second he saw that Preston was busy, the manager himself came over to help us. It's funny, because at another store that was not-so busy, we were told we'd be helped "in just a minute" by about 3 different employees, and it took about 30 minutes or more for that help. Here, we thought it would take much longer, and we were helped within minutes. Now, I haven't purchased a bike here yet, but of all the shops so far I feel most comfortable putting my money into a bike here. At least the people we talked to know their stuff (well, so it seems from my limited experience.) Even though I'm a lady, women's roadbikes don't make a lot of sense on me. I have a torso long enough to be a B-Ball player and legs short enough to be featured in the Munchkins scene in The Wizard of Oz. No joke. Finding a bike to fit me is a huge challenge. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is tall (6'2) and has long legs and a short torso. We're not an easy fit, either way. What I really appreciated is that, when Dave sked me for my budget and I said... "well, I guess $1,000 to $2000 but happy to pay less" he didn't say "you need to spend that or more than that to get a decent bike." Instead, he led me to a Trek that was priced under that, and ultimately had me test ride a Bianchi that had a model he was recommending for around $900. My boyfriend gave a test ride on a Trek 520 Touring bike (he's on the quest for comfort, even though it's just for a fitness / under 50 mile bike.) For the entire time we were at The Bicycle Outfitter, I felt like we were being helped by experts. In our quick fit before the test ride, we were taken through a few fitting exercises to see if the bikes were right for us. At other stores, I've found fitting is a joke, and many people will just put me in a small women's bike because of my short legs and the fact I'm a women. Hello, have you seen my upper half (or should I say upper 3/4ths?) Long story short, we'll definitely be back here to try out more bikes. I'm not sure if I'll buy a bike here (they have some great brands, but don't sell Specialized, which I'm currently considering.) But if you want Bianchi, Trek, Orbea, or LeMond, I highly recommend this shop! read more

I brought in two bikes today and had the best service from the bicycle outfitter. They did a quick assessment of each bike and were able to fix them quickly. Well there's a long wait for an official tune up, he was able to get them back in great riding shape with clear instructions on when it would need a full tune up. Excellent bike shop for ordinary people not only middle aged man in Lycra. I am complete noob when it comes to bicycles. I came to the shop knowing what kind of riding I wanted do, but with no idea what kind of bicycle would fit my needs. Dave (general manager) quickly figured out what would work for me and send me off trying various bike onto short 4mile ride. Dave listened to my comments about the fit and step after step adjusted the bikes to fit my body. After 4 test rides and a bunch of adjustments I could easily pick the bike I felt most comfortable with. Now 5 months and nearly 2000 miles later I can confidently say that this was an excellent purchase. Highly recommend. Word of advice. If you are looking for a new bike and do not exactly know what you are looking for - come on a weekday. The store is very busy on weekends and you may not get all attention you may need in selecting the right bike. read more

This is a ritzy bike shop in yuppieland, and they sell super overpriced beautiful bikes and slightly marked up parts and gear. However, there's a kid working on the floor that is super chill and helpful and incredibly sweet. The mechanic shop, on the other hand, is the best. The mechanics aren't warm and smiley but they're friendly in the way people who've lived in the Northeast for generations are friendly, with a hard exterior and just underneath it a deeply genuine personality that's really nice with a quirky sense of humor. I've decided this is the only place I'm going to take my bike to from now on, though I'll buy all the parts I need somewhere else. read more

I had a fantastic experience buying a road bike at Bicycle Outfitter. This was the only shop on the Peninsula that I visited that really took the time to fit me to the bike before each test ride. They had several bikes in my size which was also not true of the other shops. And it really helped to be able to test their bikes on the hills right near their shop. They took a lot of time with me and were really flexible, making sure I had the time to make a good decision. As a result, I love my bike. They worked within my price range. And for the first time in many years, I have no back pain after my rides. I can't think of a reason why someone wouldn't go to this shop to at least see what they have. For me, the fit for a road bike is a really big part of the decision and this shop is the only one that really understands fit. read more

These are the good guys. I took my ultra-strange Alan screwed-and-glued in to get the head race seated, and they took it right away, pressed it in, and didn't charge me. Won my allegiance. You do have to find the right guy if you've got an esoteric question -- I'd start by going in the mechanics' door and asking them, unless the right guys are in the store itself. But a little persistence always gets the right answer, no matter where you start. They carry some good brands -- Time, Orbea, Bianchi, as well as the Trek juggernaut. One mechanic is the guy I trust, and I'm not giving up his name. But he's not the curmudgeon guy. They are also open odd hours on the weekends for the odd problem along Foothill Blvd -- good thinking. read more

I felt like my bicycle was not properly adjusted for comfort and optimal performance, so I made an appointment at the Outfitter for a "fitting". Chris is the go to expert at the store for this service. He not only examined at my bike, but my posture as I sat and peddled on it. It turns out that there was a lot that he could do for me for a better, more efficient, and comfortable ride: saddle height, position & tilt, handle bar position, brake lever position, stem height and extension length, etc. In addition, Chris offered some helpful coaching to improve my cycling experience. Taking advantage of the BO's fitting service was definitely worthwhile. read more

This place was one of my stops in my seemingly never ending quest to find a bike. They seem to be mainly a Trek dealer, but they do carry some other brands of bikes as well. That said, they do seem to be slighter catered to the high end consumer/enthusiast, but they do have a fair selection of more moderately priced road bikes as well. They carry accessories from brands like Pearl Izumi, Oakley, Sugoi, Louis Garneau, among others. The people who work here are knowledgeable. But more importantly, at least to a person like me, they are not pushy about making a sale, nor are they snobbish if you're getting into cycling and/or can only afford a more modest bike. Brouget bike in for rear tire flat. Serviced dept. Was under staffed. Counter person VERY upset over limited staff. Quite rude and over authorative. Insisted they MIGHT get to repair in next day or two. I tried to explain we were only in town for one night and needed the repair today. Counter person insisted next day or following day or take bike elsewhere. Female employee tried to correct counter person and met his rath. The bike was repaired before 3 pm. This counter person (male, late 20's) on Tue 8-14-18 around 10:15. AM. He is not a good representative for the company. When I picked up my bike around during 3 pm, counter person was being rude to a father and little boy. Speaking condescendingly to little boy with new bike. This counterman needs a diFlorent position wherected he doesn't have to deal with the public. read more

This is the closest bike shop to me but I rarely come here because I ride Specialized bikes and they don't carry those. I went to check out the Wahoo ELEMNT after reading about it online. Jake got the ELEMNT and the Bolt models out and spent 20 minutes with me showing me features, differences between the models, etc. He was so knowledgeable about them, and he told me the pros and cons of the Wahoo vs the Garmin. He told me they do not charge to install items purchased at their shop so I went home to get my bike and returned to purchase a device and have it installed. He spent a lot of time helping me set up the device. A 5 star experience in every aspect. And the best part is that they are now a Specialized dealer, which is awesome since I'm in the market for a new bike. read more

I want to commend the bike service staff for their excellent services . My bike's derailer was broken. At first, I thought they may charge more because they are located in Los Altos Foothill. Most of the service staff have a good attitude and are capable. The most capabale one is Ryan Bontrager (yes, nephew of the Keith). The Bicycle Outfitter has helped me with all of my bicycle needs! Whenever I need a flat repaired or a tune-up, I go to these guys first. The staff is extremely friendly, and the location is very nice (parking is the only problem, especially on weekends, because it seems that many bikers park here just to go biking on Foothill, making it hard for customers to actually use the parking lot to shop). Prices are on the high side, but very affordable after factoring in the service you receive. I almost can't wait for my bike to break again! read more

Love it here. Been buying bikes from this shop since 2001. They have it all, from normal family bikes to racing and carbon masterpieces. I bring my colnago as well as many mountain bikes for service and Justin is always there with a great attitude willing to help! There's a colnago dealer not too far in palo alto but I always bring mine here because of the honest work and friendly attitude these guys have. Prices are pretty average but for the work they do they deserve more. Have been coming here for over 20 years for purchases and service and will keep doing so. I've been an Outfitter customer for years. They've always been very helpful and responsive, especially in the service department. Bike service is in great demand these days and the waits for an appointment can be very long, 4-6 weeks at many shops. I had a strange noise from my drivetrain after my morning road ride yesterday and couldn't see the problem so I called the BO and asked what the wait time was like, they said mid March for an appointment "but bring it in and let us check it out." I did, and Kenny grabbed the bike, put it on the stand, and diagnosed and fixed the problem in fifteen minutes while also offering several bits of advice. Why is it that attitude comes with bike shops? Happily, here I've found an exception. I've been a cyclist all my life and know the value of a good local bike shop. Unfortunately The Bicycle Outfitter isn't so local to me but when in need of service I make the trek. Dave and Virginia, owners, are as wonderful as it gets, folks who will readily recommend a bike that they don't even carry if they see that it is what you need. It is easy to see that they love cycling, and run the shop more out of this attitude than any other. And it is my impression that the friendly welcoming respectful attitude translates into high quality service. I picked up my cross bike the other day and am pleased to find it running as clean and tight as the first day I brought it home. Quality folks, quality work, worth patronage. read more

The Outfitter is where i go when I have a tricky mechanical problem or need some odd part. Dave Prion, General Manager, runs a first class service shop and I have rarely been disappointed. The Outfitter has a great retail side of the business, its literally one whole separate side of the business. It's a high end shop, so the prices are generally out of my range for everyday purchases, but I do get a discount through my relationship with Dan Smith at SportVelo (http://www.sportvelo.com.) I've had good luck overall at the Outfitter and I prefer it to their sister shop, Palo Alto Bikes, which is right down the street from me. read more

My review is for the service and not for the selection. We went in there very excited about finding great bikes for our family but ended up walking out. So, we have been wanting to get bikes for our family to explore different trails in the Bay Area. It's been a long time since we rode bikes and recognizing that a lot has changed, we wanted to go to a place where they can help find the right bikes for all of us. Having seen great Yelp reviews, we decide to venture there. We noticed right away that they had a great selection. So, at first we walked through each section of the store. We noticed that it was busy but not too busy. So during our first walk, we were happy that we didn't get hammered by a sales person. Now, having walked through the selection, wanting to now get some help, we took a 2nd stroll though the store. We even waited at couple of spots to get someone's attention but no luck. We took another partial stroll though the store and realized that we had now been in the store for about 20 minutes but yet no one in the store had bothered to acknowledge our existence or were perhaps deliberately ignoring us. So, we decide to walk out wondering why not a single person had even attempted to see why we were there. Perhaps it's because they thought we don't really belong there because we weren't in biking gear or perhaps because the color of our skin wasn't right or perhaps because we took our Nissan Rogue and not a Maserati, not sure. Regardless, while we really loved the selection there, the lack of service would not make us spend our money there. If you take a Maserati or look like you have money bursting out of your pocket or aren't looking for your first bike, you will do just fine here. For those who want to get service with a simile or even forget smile, just someone to help you to get something they supposedly sell, this is not the place for you. I was VERY disappointed to say the least in this place being in the Bay Area. Hope they train their staff to understand that treating everyone with respect is a far better way to earn business than being too pompous or presumptuous about your customers. We got our kid's bike repaired here for the first time today. We used to visit Performance Bike in Mountain View on El Camino Real and they are always super busy. While this place was also busy, they were far more polite and willing to accommodate us. They fixed the front derailleur but it didn't quite work when my kid tried it in the parking lot. However, the mechanic went back and took him to make sure it work this time while being good humored all along and smiling. I will visit them again for odd bike job repairs and update the review if I find otherwise. Great shop to buy gear as well though their selection of mountain bikes appeared quite limited. read more

Bar none, the best shop I've seen from a hands-on service point of view. I've been going to this shop for many years. Their service department is, in my opinion, the best out there. The store's general manager, Dave Prion, used to be a full time mechanic, so he's very particular with his mechanics. Dave is also one of the best wheelbuilders in the bay area. As Eric Heiden once said (winner of the 1st US Pro Cycling Chps in Philadelphia and a speedskating phenomenon), "The only bike I would race straight out of the box is one built up by Dave." But back to the shop itself. I think they've gone to great lengths to not only service the high end clientele(road and mtn), but bike commuters, as well as first-time riders. They can order anything that they might not have in stock. They also support one of the U.S. top women's professsional cycling teams in a big way. I didn't like this place. I was there with only one other customer, but I had to go to the main desk to get some help after waiting five minutes in the bike room. Got an older guy with an earing, asked about bikes on sale or 2008 model bikes. He gave short, terse answers without looking at me. Sorry if my search for a bike on sale offended you, dickhead.
