Disappointed when the old one closed, I was amped up to try the "new" Birchwood. Upon walking in, not much is different, but it does seem "cleaner" and less cluttered. It's still full of memorabilia and other silly stuff. Wasn't busy but took over 2 min to be greeted and the waitress (one on duty at 1pm on a Monday), was slightly less than attentive. New menus are professional the choices are extensive. You will recognize most dishes but there were new ones. The coffee was very good (same as before). The shrimp cocktail appetizer was good and I believe the shrimp was fresh but they were not quite cold enough. Shrimp cocktail needs to be served COLD. My French dip sandwich was delicious, however. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and the au jus was perfect. Sandwich roll was crisp and toasted nicely. My friend had a hot pastrami sandwich on rye. I found the food to be pretty good here considering the extensive menu. A lot of places end up doing too much and then they sacrifice the quality of the food. I felt like they did a pretty good job of serving a lot of options that were still good. They just switched up a burger order and made the wrong one medium rare instead of well. Very disappointing experience. Our waitress was completely flustered, (I had to ask 3 times for a glass of water) and the crowd from the bar was loud and obnoxious. The food had potential. I had the combo platter and the potato pancakes and perogis were delicious. However, the mashed potatoes were awful, the green beans were overcooked and the smoked kilbasi was nothing special. Went to this restaurant expecting a fine meal, the food was ok, however our party was 14 seniors, 7 couples, the bill arrives, $700.00, the men all take out their credit cards and put them in the check folder the waitress comes back and says they will only take 1 credit card per table, we tried to explain to the owner that most of us didn't carry that much money, she didn't care and insisted on 1 credit card only, so 1 of the party put the whole bill on his card and we will have to pay him back when we can. We had the pu pu platter. Very disappointed! The spare ribs were VERY TUFF. The chicken wings were dry and had no sauce or flavoring!

Hoping to bring back memories with some great Polish food.....guess those memories will have to wait.....stuffed cabbage was warm at best and ice cold in the middle....drowned in a tomato based sauce with was bland beyond belief.....the fries were just plain cold as well, but the broccoli was cooked ok. The seafood bisque was creamy and delicious. Our waitress was a sweetheart, and the service was fine. Went for Mother's Day brunch. Reservation only. Had reservations at 1 didn't get seated till 1:30pm. It was not brunch. It was breakfast pre fixed menu. So 29.99 for 1 mimosa a choice of a breakfast omelettes French toast or pancakes. Not all you can eat. One dish. Only included mimosas orange juice coffee or tea. If you wanted anything else I drink it was 2.99. Around 2pm the waitress finally served us the round of drinks we ordered upon sitting and took our order. At 2:45 I went and asked to speak with a manager or someone who knew what was going on as we were waiting 45mjns for eggs n toast. The hostess advised me that our food wasn't even made yet. Here we are at 3pm waiting for breakfast?? She said they would give us a round of drinks and we could now order from there dinner pre fix menu. So we decided to stay and order. We ordered and got our apps at 320. At 415 we got our dinners. 2 dinners forgotten and everything was cold. The chicken in the penne ala vodka was cut up frozen chicken tenders. The steaks were great but the side were all cold and the lobster tortillani was awful. Finally completely over it. We got our check and they charged us for everything. Yea nothing taken off or comped! Now sending back the check they took off the round of drinks as promised and only charged us for the brunch n not the dinner menu however still very pricey and terrible. The more we sat the more we saw people seated and then leaving after no service. Terrible job on the restaurant and the waitress was completely overwhelmed. Definitely never going back there again. Thanks Birchwood for my 4.5 hr wait on Mother's Day when I could have been doing something else. Would never recommend this place to anyone which is sad to say as a long time resident. seeing how this was handled so poorly not even 1 star is accurate. Very disappointing read more

If you are looking for old style Polish food, this is the place. Not so much for pasta or light salads - they may be good too but why would you come here for that kind of food. This is the place for kielbasa and perogies! If you don't know what those are - this is the place to try it. TIP It's a short walk from Brew Crew Cycles and a great place to go afterwards. When I first walked in it seemed a little dark. But once my eyes adjusted I saw it was a lovely well appointed restaurant. The antiques could be in a museum. Four of us ordered the Polish platter. It was packed with food. And the food was so tasty. One person ordered steak and said it was delicious. One person got the stuffed shrimp and said it was delicious. They have specials during the week for seniors. We will definitely go back. The waiter was a little rushed. The owner was very friendly. read more

Have not been here in years. I read that there are new owners. Place feels like one has stepped back into the last century with easy on the eyes relaxed lighting and fabulous excellent antique airplanes overhead, while enjoying fresh tap bear (very good selection!) and savoring the perfect home made onion soup and followed by their extremely generous polish combo plate. I love this place and will return next week! Waitress perfect. Plenty else on the menu if not a fan of polish food. I have a special place in my palate for the food at the Brichwood. I've been going here for years and they still astonish me with the variety and quality of good from traditional Polish to current options. Pastrami Ruben rings my bell each time they have it. Waffle Fries and the soup are always great. Coffee is perfect, better than any Manhattan restaurant and I've been to most of them. If you want beer on tap they just added some of the best that are available. If you have time, start on one end and see how far you get. They are all great and the bar staff knows them all. I very rarely leave reviews, but I felt the need to after the experience I had at this place. Rented the space they have for brunch/private parties and such for a friend's surprise baby shower. The food was good, but that's the only nice thing I'll say about this place. The owner who we were dealing with for the party was extremely difficult to get ahold of, rarely ever answered her phone. When the day came that we showed up (an hour early) to set up for the party, she was no where to be found and the doors were locked. When we did get let in by the staff, the place was disgusting. The table linens were stained (or not even washed at all), there were things like straws and dirty utensils on the chairs and floor, and I even found old food and garbage under MULTIPLE tables. Absolutely disgusted. We felt rushed at the end because we only had the space for 3 hours, and she had a lot of gifts to open, and you could see the staff standing around waiting to leave (there was no event after ours). The woman we were dealing with planning the party was not there at any point. The entire thing was run by waitstaff, they were nice but it seemed pretty unprofessional. Thankfully, the pregnant friend who was being showered didn't notice most of the hiccups and had a nice time, which is what matters most I guess. Do not host your private event here. read more

Great food, with a pretty wide selection of Polish food, typical pub food, and some nice dinner options (duck, lamb, etc.) plus a lot of representation of local beers in tap. The ambiance is classic pub, with dark wood and stained glass lamps. The service was great and the food was amazing (we went with the Polish food). My only complaint (and this hasn't kept me from going back) is that the restaurant smells like it could use a good airing out (a little musty or something--something that I am sensitive to). I will go again next time I am in the Riverhead area! read more

I used to really enjoy this place ... i recently ordered a rib eye steak medium rare and was given what seemed to be a small / thin over cooked strip steak. When i asked if it was an error with the steak the (kind) waitress said she believes they only have rib eyes on the new menu. It wasn't a rib eye and sincerly was a lousy piece of meat, for 22.00 to boot. Which I will say is modest for this day in age. Regardless of price steaks are a tricky dish... when it's good it's good and when bad its bad. Birchwood always had decent meat. : ( This is what seems to be the case often unless you go to a steak house of sorts. Others that were with us had mediocre meals as well. I hate writing reviews like this because of the way things used to be prior. I hope the new owners/management can find this helpful and bring it on back ! I took my daughters to dinner there a few weeks ago, and it was the Best meal I've had in quite a while! I ordered the cabbage-and-kielbasa soup to start - man, maybe the tastiest soup I've ever had. Then I had the Combo Platter for dinner: kielbasa & kraut, pierogies, golomki, potato pancakes, with green beans almondine. Lots of food, and Sooo Good! Everything was delicious, but the golomki was the BEST. And the meal came to just over $70 for all 3 of us - an added surprise! read more

I am definitely a fan of the food both with the old owners as well as the new ones. It was great that the menu was expanded to add a little more variety. With that said, the food is very inconsistent. We have been about a half dozen times in the past year and it seems like every time something changed and not always for the better. read more

went for easter buffet style brunch. the food was very disappointing: barely anything actually polish, more like below average american breakfast. the pastries (cupcakes, donuts, rainbow cookies) were clearly store bought. the only good thing was the pierogies, but i would not pay the all you can eat the outrages price just for those. as for drinks (not included in the price), the bloody marys were bloody horrible, and the mimosas sucked, too. on top of all this, our waiter was annoying and kept creeping me out. not as much as the dirty-looking easter bunny mascot, though -- that was the low point in the midst of all the tacky decorations. $40+tax+gratuity is ridiculous for this kind of food/service. will not return here. avoid this place if you want to have authentic polish food at a nice place. p.s. after all these years, i finally just registed on yelp to be able to deter people from having the same crappy experience i had. just. don't. do. it. read more

Just had a retirement party last weekend here. Was really terrific. The catering room is beautiful and the food was delicious. The owner and her staff go out of their way to do such a wonderful job. I have been going to Birchwood for many years! Might add I was always satisfied. Today a few friends met for lunch.. I asked for fried onions on my burger...$1.50 charge on the check really shocked me.. an inquiry resulted in ''yeah that's what they charge". Sweet potato fries way over done....Chili had to be sent back on an earlier visit...just cold! The new owners need a little experience.... or at least a bit of attention to the LITTLE things...I do hope things improve. read more

Well, we were looking forward to dinner at the new Birchwood since it reopened with new owners but were very disappointed. It's still very dingy and greasy looking inside even though the owner claimed to have used 50 gallons of degreaser cleaning inside. That thought was alarming in itself. Although the food was good the service was very slow. We sat for 40 minutes after eating the complimentary bread waiting for food. A man who seemed like the owner or manager came to the table and did not seem concerned that we were sitting there with no food. He just chatted. After waiting a bit longer we asked the waiter what happened to the food. He said "I just checked and it will be out in a bit." The food finally came. My husbands food was fine. I ordered a burger with the BBQ sauce on side and extra bacon. Of course, there was BBQ sauce smeared on the bun and no bacon. The waiter finally asked if everything was ok and I advised him of the error. I scraped the sauce off and declined his offer to bring me bacon since I had already eaten half. He brought it anyway and did not remove it from the bill. The so called manager came over to ask how was everything and I told him of the problems. He just asked if the waiter made it right. I said well you couldn't take the sauce off. He proceeded to tell me how he likes BBQ sauce. He did not apologize or offer anything to make up for the errors. He should not be visiting tables if he isn't really listening or correcting problems. It took forever to get the check. It's a shame because the food was ok but the service was so bad I don't think we'll be back any time soon. Just not a happy place... read more

By far some the worst foods I've had in awhile. Went in for brunch. If you want an omelette,expect to wait at lest 20 mins in line just to get up to where they cook your omelette.Half the food was cold and the other half was to watery. I asked for Hash and while the girl scooped it out..water/oil just ran out of the spoon, and when I ate the Luke warm hash,it was like it was thrown in the microwave just to try and warm it up. The Penni's al vodka was so watery. AND WHAT EVER AND YOU DO..DO DONT...I REPEATED DO NOT EAT FROM THE CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN. Strawberries had mold on them and the green grapes where no longer green but now where brown. Also the eggs Benedict was awful the hollandaise sauce tasted like chicken française sauce. Beyond disappointed with with the food and the management but thank god my waitress made my experience the best it could have been there. Do yourself the favor and find another established to eat at. read more
