I have heard such great things about the Bird Clinic. I only wish I could have gotten in to see the doctor. I called for an appointment for our little parakeet that's very sick. I left a message and someone called me back right away. She said there were two appointments available on the upcoming Monday and I told her I need to check with my Mom (it's her bird) and I called back in about five minutes and left a voice mail message saying I would like to confirm one of the appointments and to please call me back to confirm. Never heard a work even after leaving a second voice mail message. When I called on Monday asking for an appointment, I was told that they always respond to messages (obviously not since I left two voice mail messages), she blatantly lied. Now they don't have any appointments for the entire month and now I'm left with finding another bird expect before my bird dies. Not good service at all!!! read more

My sad experience with Nemetz is that I had a seriously injured canary (approx. 1 year old), who suffered over three days and died. Nemetz wasn't available to immediately see my canary (broken leg)) and when he did have time to see her, the charges ran over $800. Furthermore, the clinic is hot and stuffy, and you have to wear a mask. I felt ill listening to his "advice", which I followed to the best of my ability. I gave Dr. Nemetz three stars because it is a blended rating. He gets five stars for his technical expertise and knowledge of avian medicine. I temper this enthusiastic recommendation with a cautionary note: his bedside manner is atrocious. I disagree with those that complain about his charges. He is highly trained, has probably accumulated a large educational debt, does not get paid by insurance companies, and deals with birds, many of whose owners would rather limit their vet expenses until it is too late. I view his rates as fair, not excessive. I'm an MD, and I appreciate that Dr. Nemetz has a very deep understanding of avian physiology and pathology. His ability to perform surgeries and technical procedures is unsurpassed. He is meticulous. Now, to the obvious area of improvement. I am not sure if it is an innate character defect or the result of seeing many owners malnourish and mistreat their birds, but his default attitude towards a new patient's owner is very bad. It's almost as if a pediatrician assumed every parent was a child abuser. I like Dr. Nemetz, and have had long and cheerful conversations with him, but even at his best, he seems brittle and prickly. He takes issue with everything a person can say, even a casual remark. At his worst, he is bitter, acerbic, and downright insulting, questioning the intelligence and compassion of his customers. You may also hear him verbally dressing down his employees, or sniping about owners who call in to ask a question, before he picks up the phone. If you go to Dr. Nemetz (and if you love your bird, there really is no other option in OC) be prepared to wear a thick skin. I can only hope he finds some peace of mind over the years -- whether it is a new profession, insight through counseling, or spiritual growth through a 12 step program to help him deal with his emotions. If I could give this guy 0 stars I would. He's a complete rip off and lies to you about prices. My cockatiel is 3-4 months old and all of sudden started sitting on the bottom of his cage and sleeping a lot. I was concerned to I brought my bird into this place (big mistake). One of the birds wings was dropping kind of low and that totally went unnoticed by this guy. The dr proceeded to push unnecessary services and claim my bird had not been weened off baby formula correctly and that he was under weight and could die. He talked about hospitalizing the bird at a cost of $500 a day so he could force feed him. Anyways after I left his office and with an overpriced bill, I find out through my own physical examination my bird broke his wing. This idiot spent an hour telling me everything in the world was wrong with my bird trying to sell me treatments and he couldn't even figure out that the reason my bird was acting funny was because he was hurt. I accidentally stepped on my cockatiel, broke her wing, bruised her leg so bad and my bird's life is in danger. My bird was in a terrible shocked and I can hear my bird crying. I brought her to Dr. Nemetz and he saved my bird. He is a very knowledable avian doctor and I can see his concern and care for the birds. It has been over a month ordeal for me and now my bird is still recovering but she is now OK. Thanks for Dr. Nemetz. Dr. Nemetz has been seeing my babies for over 10 years. He is the ONLY avian veterinarian that I trust & will NOT take my babies to anyone else. Yes, he does charge a little bit more than other veterinarians; however, you do need to realize that he's an avian specialist. Dr. Nemetz is very straight forward & won't sugar coat, which can lead people to believe he's being condescending & talking down to them. He's a very logical thinker & will state facts, which most people don't want to hear. The Bird Clinic is no doubt a nice facility and is a great practice, however prepare to be taken advantage of with his outlandish prices. He charges about triple what everything at your average avian vet would charge and he marks up medication 10-15 times what it typically costs, again at a normal avian vet. I'm not sure why he feels like his expertise is worth 3 times his peers charge... Ask for prices upfront or when you checkout be prepared for a surprise...expect the most minor check up and medication to be $1000+ or more. read more

If I could I wouldn't even rate this business. I had the worst experience at this place. Here is why.... I discovered a large open bulge on the back of my macaw "Dakota". I called multiple vets and this place was the only one who agreed to see my bird. I didn't know what was happening. We had never noticed that large open brown on the bird. I was desperate for answers. Dr. Nemetz came into the exam room, picked up my macaw and checked the back of his neck. He said it was a large tumor and needed to run tests to find out more. He said it would cost about $1,708.22 to run test and get started. I asked him if there were other options because of the cost. He did not like my question. He told me he had passed up his lunch in order to see my bird. He was so rude and cold hearted. I went there to get my pet some type of care and instead I got treated like an idiot and did not receive any treatment for my bird. He charged me $160.00 for the visit and didn't even bother to clean the wound on my bird. I walked out of there in total shock and disbelief. I cried the whole way home which was 30 miles away. Maybe he was having a bad day and I got the short end of the stick but to charge a fee and not even attend to the injury is simply ridiculous. In my opinion he is in this business for the money. We have had three parrots cared for by Dr. Nemetz and his staff, and I can truly say that Dr. Nemetz knows about all there is that is worth knowing about how to care for your bird. If your bird needs surgery like my beloved African Grey Parrot, Smokey, required, Dr. Nemetz is the best. He removed a terrible cyst from inside Smokey that was causing her great pain, and making her pick her feathers -- something that Dr. Nemetz explained is caused by some kind of distress and discomfort. I'm not sure what people are talking about with Dr. Nemetz's personality or bedside manner! I found him to be very nice and polite! And obviously incredibly knowledgeable!! (And Kat (Cat?), the receptionist, is super sweet also!) I have a 24-year-old grey cockatiel, and I brought him in out of concern for a growth on his foot that seemed to be causing him to lose balance and fall off his perch occasionally. Dr. Nemetz was very sweet to my bird (my "child" as he called him) and did a thorough exam, talking me through everything. He explained the possible causes, then took off my bird's ID bracelet (yep, he still had it after 24 years - bad idea) and so hopefully he will have some relief. Of course he recommended several ways to improve my bird's quality of life and health in his elderly years, and other measures I can take to extend his life as long as possible (as well as the cost associated with each). He may come across as matter-of-fact, but I found it to be a show of confidence that he knows what he is talking about - which he does - and he definitely has my respect! He clearly cares very much for his winged patients. I plan to go back to Dr. Nemetz for a blood panel, to ensure my birdie has as long and happy of a life as he possibly can. His state-of-the-art facility is beyond anything I've ever seen before. I originally took my Cockatiel to another vet who recommended I see Dr. Nemitz as she was concerned that his case might be more than she had knowledge about. I appreciated that and that's how we ended up at the Bird Clinic. The receptionist was very helpful in squeezing me into their tight schedule today and the Doctor was able to see me right away. I was amazed by how much I learned about cockatiels from him and that's coming from someone who has owned cockatiels for 25 years and thought I knew it all! I'm happy to say that my bird got great care and his health issue wasn't as serious as the other vet thought. It will be a much easier fix. I thank Dr. Nemitz for the great advice. I don't mind paying the extra money for someone to give a correct diagnosis the first time rather than have me keep coming back due to uncertainty, which costs even more. Dr. Neimetz knows birds, but what he charges is ridiculous. I paid almost $500 for a chicken that had to be put to sleep. Paying $200 to put down an animal is absurd. After my expensive experience there, I called Magnolia Bird Farm and asked about an alternative avian vet. They said they don't recommend Dr. Neimetz because he overcharges his clients. As an alternative, they recommended Dr. Greek in Yorba Linda. I took a chicken to see Dr. Greek and was very pleased with his knowledge and fees--very reasonable. read more

If I can give a negative star review I would. I've never met anyone so heartless. I called in for an emergency for my 8 year old daughter's cockatiel who was suffering from egg binding. The douche of a "doctor" tells me they are closing and he can't help. He talked to me as if I was stupid... you turn me away after I begged for help as my daughter's bird was suffering... my daughter crying in the background. How can you go into a profession to help animals when you turn around and not help. Granted I understand your "hours" but come on it was only 11:45am! Yes they close at 12pm on Thursday! And right before the holidays! Have some compassion, isn't that what you went to school for? Quite disappointed. This bird was more than a bird, it was my daughter's companion and helped with her anxiety. Due to your lack of compassion, I had to drive 40 miles away and our precious bird didn't make it. I have a White Front Amazon that has a problem with his feet and standing and sleeping. My local vet, whom I adore and treats me very well and with respect, couldn't figure out what was going on and recommended Nemitz. I live in Pomona so the drive is rather long and traumatic for my bird. After several visits, and about $3200 later (mostly funding his "latest and greatest" procedure, that he screwed up), duplicate xrays that I already had done, having to leave my bird overnight, I still have a sick bird and NOBODY seems to be able to figure out what is going on ...NOT EVEN NEMITZ!!! He is rude, treats you like you don't know anything, won't listen to you, and loves money to fund his flaky "procedures" that don't do anything. I had video recordings of how my bird slept and nemitz wasn't interested, until I insisted, THEN he said "well why didn't you tell me???".. That is BS as I told him and had my laptop already to go to show this jerk! TOTALLY unprofessional!!! Rude!!! just an ass! I will NOT spend another cent with this quack! If you love this jerk, and love throwing money at him for very little, be my guest! I was lucky to find him on the internet when my local veterinarian gave up on treatment for my treasured budgie/parakeet who, in spite of medical care, had developed a huge abdominal tumor. Dr. Nemetz took on the challenge of treating my little guy, who had been sent home to die by the other vet. Dr. Larry Nemetz is the best avian veterinarian in southern California. He is a vet's vet. He's the one who other vets (avian and non-avian) refer to when they are stumped by avian patients. At veterinary hospitals in Orange County, Dr. Nemetz is revered and deferred to. I would not entrust my five beloved cockatoos and macaws to any other avian veterinarian. Although Dr. Nemetz is expensive, the adage that you get what you pay for is true in any profession, including avian veterinary medicine. If the bird that you love is very ill or injured, you take it to the best. Dr. Nemetz is kind, compassionate, caring and very fair. He truly cares about your "child." One of my macaws at the age of 14 sustained a terrible injury as a result of a misdiagnosis and inappropriate cryosurgery from another veterinarian. She was in terrible pain. I had to decide whether to put her down. Dr Nemetz convinced me that she would recover after the treatment and that I should persevere with it. He was right. She did make a full recovery and I am very grateful to Dr. Nemetz to have her back to normal. I am very fortunate to have Dr. Nemetz as my avian vet. read more

I brought my bird to Dr. Nemetz and he seemed very knowledgeable. I agree with other posts that he seemed a bit arrogant, but that's how some smart people are. The thing that caught me off guard was the expensive blood work that brought my entire bill up to about $300. The blood work confirmed what the doctor suspected -- my bird was fat from eating seeds and there was no underlying infection. I didn't go back because I can't afford such large bills for a parakeet. I have dealt with Numbnutz a couple times now and both times it ended up in a dead bird. Sadly most birds dont make it long after" WE" realize there is something seriously wrong. Its in the natural instinct to act as normal as possible but here is what gets me. Its about the money! He can charge what he wants because he knows what he knows...BUT he doesnt know everything when it comes down to it, a lot of what he does is a guessing game for him. We didnt get any clear answers from him on what was really wrong but after you pay for an office visit, xrays, blood work and hydration its $1400-$1600! You still walk away with hardly any answers! He DOES talk down to people. He treats most people like they are idiots (maybe that would be different after he gets to know you and you bring your birds to him over and over, but then your a supporter and not just someone who needs him that one time!) My husband and I have been bird owners for 10+ years now and we own Eclectus Parrots and when we got our first girl we were very well read and we have learned so much that we even mentor people thinking about getting birds. You might even say we are overly cautious and paranoid when it comes to our birds, so when Im heart broken and sitting in tears because my baby is so sick he can barely perch....well dont tell me or insinuate that I have done something wrong , out of stupidity, to my bird!! I take offence to that! Have some COMPASSION! I hope that paying for what knowledge he does have, has helped bird owners save their birds but he has to realize that after seeing birds for so many years that there is a point that you should be straight up and tell bird owners that they arent like dogs and cats and the survival rate of a very sick bird is so low and give you the choices and odds. Dr. Nemetz is very knowledgeable about birds and did his best to diagnose and provide treatment plans for my parrot. However, he is one of the only avian vets in Orange County, and his services are quite pricy and there are no billing plans, which is why I took away one star in this review. However, he and his staff are very professional and spent quality time to provided care for my parrot, giving us advice on parrot diet and showing us how to massage the abdomen to help my parrot pass droppings. Beware of this Doctor and if you love your bird then take it somewhere else. The Doctor is rude to people, has no people skills, and does not know how to handle birds without injuring them. I live 20 miles from the clinic and I wish I had heeded some of the other reviews. On October 6, 2014, I made an appointment for a physical examination for my adult 500 gram male Yellow-nape Amazon Parrot (Slinky) for the purpose of getting a chip implanted in him later. Once in the examination room the Doctor removed my bird from the carrying cage with his own finger, placed him on a T-Bar, weighed him, and did a brief visual examination of him. Slinky was a new first time patient and the Doctor began asking me questions about him. As I was telling the Doctor about Slinky he interrupted me by saying: "Just give me the short version." He really did not want to know everything about the history Slinky. During this visual examination Slinky jumped up, flapped his wings, flew to the top of the exam room's ceiling, then crashed down into the exit door (door was left open), and flapped across the floor out into the exterior hallways were the Doctor's other facilities were. The Doctor exclaimed: "OH, that bird can fly!" The Doctor called for help, and for someone to bring in a towel. Slinky was herded into a confined corner of the room and wrapped in a towel to subdue him. Slinky was placed, wrapped in a towel, upon the exam table and it was noticed that were was blood everywhere. On the exam table, on the towel, on the papers on the exam table, on the door, and on the floor. When Slinky crashed into the wall he broke off part of his beak down to the point were there are live blood vessels. The Doctor took Slinky into another room and put an epoxy patch on the end of his beak to reattach it. The Doctor told me that it would heal in about 6 weeks and that "There would be no charge for this procedure." Thank you doctor. The Doctor then drew a sample of Slinky's blood for the laboratory to analyze. I was told that the sample, to be examined for Psittacosis, had to be shipped to a laboratory in the State of Florida and that it could take two weeks to get a result. The Doctor also told me that he would be out of town for several weeks and I would be notified when he returned so that I could make further appointments with him. I called the office three times from 10-13-14 to 10-27-14 and only one message was replied to. The receptionist finally called me back and replied that the Doctor was still out of town, she could not give me any results of the test, and that I would be informed of his return. Today, November 1st, 2014, I was called by the office and they told me that the blood sample was lost and that I would have to bring in Slinky to get another one. The Doctor could not explain what happened to the sample. The Doctor told me that they never use tracking numbers on shipments. I told him NO to the retaking of the blood sample and his reply was: "It is free." I told him that I wanted a refund and that he was no longer Slinky's doctor. He will give me at least a partial refund and I will never return to this Quack, Quack, Quack. During my brief experience with this clinic it is my opinion that this is a very smart, educated,and capable Doctor. But he would rather STUDY medicine and NOT PRACTICE IT. He is frequently absent for days and weeks and he is a rude person. I spent a total of $445.09 for this adventure (all tests and examinations.) What I have in return is a big disappointment, nothing tangible in return, and a damaged bird. I now have to find a truly capable local doctor and start all over again. Dr. Nemetz is AMAZING. There are lots of comments here about his bedside manner being sub-par. NOT TRUE! I have to say I found him to be perfectly lovely! He obviously is extremely passionate about birds and avian medicine, and incredibly knowledgeable. Being a (GOOD) doctor, he doesn't have time for superficial or talk WHILE DIAGNOSING. He's trying to get to the root of the issue, and he will keep the conversation on point in order to obtain and convey the crucial information. He was not at all rude, just direct and straightforward. This may throw some people off at first, but I felt he was exceptionally professional. AFTER the diagnosis, he did make room for some friendly/casual conversation.. Dr. Nemetz was genuinely interested in why I chose the bird I did, and how we bond and play. He was also very gentle, friendly, and even playful with my little bird during our conversation. Throughout the visit, he was careful to write down notes of all the important bits (from diet modification to often-overlooked birdie dangers) on a packet of info sheets for future reference. This is incredibly helpful, giving the wealth of knowledge he dropped on me during our visit! Yes, he is a bit pricey (about $105 for an office visit, $100-150 for labs, and $300+ for x-rays in 2013) but absolutely WORTH EVERY PENNY. He is a SPECIALIST (one of only a very small handful of bird-only vets in the COUNTRY). If you love your bird and care about its health, do yourself a favor and visit Dr. Nemetz, even if its only for a checkup. I find the other comments regarding his bedside manner entertaining. He is a bit arrogant, I will allow that, but I find it absolutely hilarious. He has worked hard to get where he is in terms of avian knowledge. He has the license to be arrogant. Yeah, in a perfect world, everyone would be huggy-lovey whatever. I see it like this: you can't waste your time going through life being hypersensitive about everything and expecting everyone to woo-woo and coo at you/your pet. It's the differences in people that make life interesting. I am in the veterinary field and I know what people do to animals. People suck. People are difficult and demanding. People expect veterinarians to perform Jesus-esque (yes, I just made that up) miracles for free or next to nothing. And he knows that. Dealing with crappy people who do stupid things to their animal companions sucks away at your soul. But he also recognizes good owners/pet parents. He takes the time to explain everything and answers questions and does a lot of things many veterinarians don't do. He is thorough and takes time with each client. A lot of vets rush through things to get as many appointments as possible. It's like shopping at Nordstrom vs. Walmart. You get what you pay for. Sure, he's a little bit like the character House from t.v. I find that he is no worse personality-wise than many MD's. He can actually be very nice and friendly. Dr. Nemetz is excellent. He spends a lot of time with each client and I have found him to be quite nice. He is a wealth of information, cares very deeply for birds, and the facility is very clean/modern. I wouldn't take my African Grey anywhere else. Yes, it is costly, but he is a specialist and specialists cost more money. If one wants to keep an exotic animal as a pet, one has to be prepared to spend the money on their proper care. read more

Dr. Nemetz is the "go to" vet for avian medicine. If you have a bird, he's your man. We had a very, very sick parrot and it took us alot of wasted money and two other vets that couldn't help before we were referred to the Bird Clinic. Thank goodness! We have been taking our flock to Dr. Nemetz for 4 years now and wouldn't trust anyone else. Yes he cost more than your average vet- however! you get more than your average vet! His wealth of knowledge concerning the field of avian medicine is vast, and he's one of just a few avian-only vets in the country. Also, what you are paying for are often tests or treatments that aren't available at other clinics because other vets simply don't have the know-how/resources. Had it not been for Dr. Nemetz, I would have lost my Cockatoo to pneumonia 3 years ago. I kind of chuckled when I read the comments about his personality. I've known him for about 5 years and he's spent countless hours with me explaining in great detail every problem, every procedure and given me numerous recommendations. He has a dry wit and is actually pretty hilarious when you get to know him. My bird really, really doesn't like to be handled by strangers and he even had a seizure at the groomers. I call Dr. Nemetz, "The Bird Whisperer" He can calm my bird down better than I or anyone else can. My bird became seriously ill again last week, such is life with fungal pneumonia when you live near the beach where this stuff grows, this is a disease that was almost always fatal until recently. Dr. Nemetz has developed a protocol for this illness with a very high success rate. He has spent the last 4 days, practically living at his hospital with my bird. He stopped breathing on Friday and Dr. Nemetz resuscitated him and spent the next 4 days medicating him every 8 hours (First treatment of the day at 7:00 AM last treatment of the day at 11:00PM), and injecting him with other medications in between. Yeah, it's expensive, but would you rather spend $60 at a general vet and end up with a dead bird or $250 for the best guy around and come home with a healthy bird? His practice is one of 8 in the U.S. that is exclusive to birds. His diagnostic equipment is state of the art. You won't find anyone better in OC. The down side of this clinic if you are not an established patient in an emergency is, this is a one-man clinic. To the poster who lost their Goffins Cockatoo, my heart goes out to you, I'm really sorry for your loss. There were more than likely several emergencies ahead of you when you arrived and he's just one guy. Birds hide their symptoms and by the time they can't hide their illness anymore, it's often too late to save them. It was almost too late for us on Friday. My bird is coming home from the hospital tomorrow, and once again, I am grateful to Dr. Nemetz for his expertise and willingness to do whatever it takes. If you have a sick bird and you are committed to healing the bird, go to the bird clinic. Be prepared to spend three times more than going to your local vet. Let me explain: the cost for my visit (just to be seen) $190. Xray/radiograph $400 (approx). CBC blood test $350 (approx) and there were some other test that totaled almost $1100. WTF! That's what I screamed when I saw the bill (of course, in my head). I was in a daze. I took my bird home figuring out how I was going to mitigate my expenses. Knowing, there were more test needed. A week later, I spoke to the doctor about the blood test and he explained everything detail by detail. I called 4 local vets to discuss various options and to get a second opinion. They all referred me back to the bird clinic. The doctor is very knowledgeable and doesn't mind explaining circumstances and proceedures at length. He figured out what was wrong with my bird in that one visit. I am sure it would of taken me multiple visits and more time if I went elsewhere. So, I guess for me it was worth it. Just remember, it's going to cost you. By the way, they have a cool bird supply store next door. read more
