At the advice of a bird rescue group, I took a cockatiel that showed up at my house to Dr Nemetz at the Bird Clinic. This cockatiel was fierce, strong, and energetic, highly demanding and determined to do whatever he wanted. However, he had green poops and his feathers looked scruffy. Dr Nemetz said he had giardiasis and he gave him a one-ml injection of Flagyl (Metronidazole) into the chest. The injection looked horribly painful and the cockatiel screamed in pain. Dr Nemetz said he needed an injection every day for 7 days, and was prepared to send me home with needles and meds so I could do it myself. I have experience giving injections to people, but there was no way I could stick a big needle in that tiny bird chest - and I felt it would be inappropriate and dangerous to let any untrained person do so - so I left the cockatiel with him so he could give him the daily injections at the office. When I picked the cockatiel up after a week, he was terrified and weak. Additionally, for the rest of his life, he was terrified of anyone wearing a blue shirt (the same color as the scrubs worn by this vet), or of anyone approaching him with a pen or anything that even remotely resembled a syringe. Additionally, he never returned to his previous level of vigor, energy or health after these shots. He developed a tremor, had difficulty hanging onto his perch, and was simply frail. Unfortunately, it wasn't until after the damage had already been done that I found out that Flagyl IS NOT MEANT TO BE INJECTED. When I discussed this event with other vets after the fact, they were all horrified when I told them Dr Nemetz had injected 1 ml of Flagyl into this cockatiels chest. I also did a lot of research online and discovered that both the dose, and the method of administration were not recommended. This cockatiel had major liver damage afterward, that was probably caused by these inappropriate injections. I ended up keeping this cockatiel, and felt so much guilt over how his health had been so badly diminished solely because I took him to a quack, and allowed him to perform these injections, even though I thought the first one looked barbaric. There are many good reviews for this vet, so he must do something right, but please do not ever let him inject your bird with unconventional meds!!! read more

Eclectus parrot/ heavy metal toxicity = GI ileus I have a parrot sanctuary in the sfv and have 27 parrots, mostly eclectus. My boy was suddenly different, luckily I can see in their eyes when they are leaving. I called the Bird Clinic and explained my situation and Erin was so kind and so positive I felt at ease. Even though it was probably one of the first weeks of my life, my boy wasn't eating nor was I. Long story short, my boy was dying and today I just brought him home and he's eating like he never has! Dr Nemetz is the only vet who can say he is a avian vet. I've even been going to dog and cat vets because they say they do avian also, but honestly they know nothing! My boy almost died and there is no chance I will take that chance again in my life. Dr Nemetz will be the official vet for Prego Dalliance Sanctuary. do not go to this vet; if you really care about your bird; especially if you have a life or death emergency situation such as was my case this is not the right vet for emergencies; i was referred to him by a local vet that was the biggest mistake i've made; I should pay attention to my hunches; it did not feel right with this docotor; he does not tell you the truth about your bird either; i got the impression that he knew that she was going to die and didn't want to tell me; while benefitting financially and learning about her case to benefit himself; and he scared me when he said he was too busy with other surgeries; in my case; he did not give a diagnosis for my dying bird; period and couldn't if he really tried to give a correct diagnosis, and didn't know what was wrong with my bird until after she died in his care that night; he did a necropsy to find out why he failed and used my bird to learn from his mistakes. he does not really care about saving your birds life; only cares about collecting $$$$$ dollars; and receiving payment ; he did nothing out of the ordinary; to save her life and charged me for the full emergency fees for just seeing her; he was angry at me because he couldn't charge me even more money maybe he feels that people should pay him a lot more money than he is receiving and treated me as if i was wasting his time and even threatened me to court if he did not receive his monies asap. also his prices are much too high, to the tune of 1200 dollars for an exray, antibiotics one day in the hospital and a dead goffins cockatoo whom i was emotionally bonded to. i brought my sick goffin's cockatoo in; and i knew she was very very sick and thought she was dying and wished that dr. nemetz. could save her life her suffering; my goffin's meant more than anything to me she remains in my heart forever; i loved her more than anyone knows; but he told me he and it broke my heart that he was too busy with his scheduled surgeries; his surgeries were more important than my sick and dying bird. I repeat do not bring your bird here for emergencies the office help is exactly that office help they don't seem to know anything about birds; most interested in paperwork and money; wondered if they are even avian vet techs. the photo was my baby whom died in dr. nemetz care whom also threatened me to court after my baby died if he did not receive his money asap. read more

Warning! Do not take your bird here. Rude, unprofessional, overcharges over other vets by 50-70%. Makes up things to charge for. He works more like an attorney. Going to this Vet is like going to a greedy divorce lawyer for marriage counseling. He didn't even see something that was wrong with my pet on the "exam". He didn't even really exam the bird. He told me my bird had lice, which he said at first glance. Then he charged for looking at the lice under a microscope for a "bug identification" even though he knew what it was at first glance. That was 70.00. (I knew what it was before I brought her in). If you can get to his office, then it is worth it to go to All Creatures Care Cottage in Costa Mesa off of the 55 instead. I got quoted 98.00 for what he charged 293.00 for ( and almost charged me 393.00 for.) another example of a made up charge is his, " special consideration units". I don't even know what those are, but he charged 30.00 for 3 of them. He also charged me 70.00 more for a medication than what other vets charge. If you love your pet, if you want your pet to get the best treatment and loving care, if you want to save 50-75% in costs ( they also take care credit), go to all creatures care. You can see by the other bad reviews that he got even on Google reviews, that you want to stay away from this guy. I have to wonder if the good reviews he got were from friends and family. read more

Dr Nemetz is extremely knowledgeable and skilled. He was very polite and took the time to explain each step of the check up and how I should take care of my baby birds. I could tell he really cared about the birds he sees. He was also polite to office staff. I'm really not sure why there are so many reviews saying otherwise. The price is steep but about the same as other avian-only vets I've been to in the past. However the office assistant broke down the pricing for me over the phone when I made my appointment so there weren't any unexpected fees. read more

Dr. Nemetz almost killed my parrot. He gave all kinds of tests to my bird and determined that my bird has high uric acid and yet he told me to change her diet to Harrison High Potency diet with 20% protein. He gave me samples of this pellet and I bought it and fed my bird for 2 months. My bird's health deteriorated and I brought her to another avian vet. Anyone knows about birds should know that 20% is very high for someone that has a high uric acid. I did not know this until after I went for a second opinion. I will not trust this doctor for his negligence!!! read more

I would highly recommend Dr Nemetz. He knows birds! He has a fantastic facility with the right equipment specializing in birds only. After my bird was treated poorly by another vet, she became scared of strangers. Dr Nemetz eventually got her to trust him enough for him to handle her and treat her. My bird had been dealing with vomiting blood. He did extensive testing and eventually figured it out. Yes, the clinic is very pricey. But you do get what you pay for. I don't particularly care if his personality is dry or not, as long as he knows what he's doing and treats me and my bird with care and respect.... which I had always found to be the case. I had a very pleasant experience here with my bird. The prices are high because he is a specialist who treats birds! I paid around what I expected, he was happy to draft an estimate for me before doing any treatment and I didn't feel like he was pushing anything unnecessary. Watching him handle my bird was amazing - I was afraid my bird would get too stressed out but he voluntarily stepped up on his hand right after the dr drew his blood! The dr does have a rather brusque manner but it is a one doctor practice so he needs to be efficient with his time, and he made sure he answered all my questions and more. There is no one better than Dr. Larry Nemetz for treating birds and chickens! He is not only an extremely nice and caring gentleman but an amazing vet. My best breeding rooster was a deaths door and he gave the bird little hope but saved his life and I am eternally grateful. I take all my macaws and exotic birds to him and I know they are in excellent hands. I have boarded birds at the clinic and they are extremely well cared for and loved. He is the "perfect" vet in that he cares about what is best for the bird and wants to do whatever possible to save it. Additionally, he is very willing to take as much time as necessary to thoroughly explain everything, discuss nutrition, do's and don'ts. Our Jesse (a rescued mourning dove) has been a patient of the good doctor for 10 years. He is a true master of his craft. If you value your pet bird, you must have his name in your rolodex. His fees are on the high side, but that is comensurate to the fact you are getting the best. As far as bedside manner, he can be blunt (as he was when we brought our guy in after giving him some Avocado -Who knew that avocado can often times be fatal to birds). If you are looking for the best, Dr Nemetz is the one. My Triton Cockatoo had a very badly shattered leg with one large piece of bone over half the length of his leg broken away fro the two end pieces. My local avian vet said that there was nothing he could do to save the bird. He recommended Dr. Nemetz as the only vet he knew of in the world who might be able to do something. Nine weeks after surgery and the bird is running around like nothing ever happened. Just as important was the outstanding care and compassion shown by Dr Nemetz. I can't imagine being a bird owner and not having Dr. Nemetz as my vet. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my babies. Is he expensive? Yes, but so were my birds, their cages, their top-of-the-line food, their thousands of toys, etc. I would never cut corners when it comes to their well-being. Dr. Nemetz is a wealth of information and he spends a ton of time with me and my birds and explains everything very clearly. He has never rushed us or made me feel like a crazy, over-protective bird mom (which I totally am). He is patient, gentle and kind and I appreciate all of the care he's given my babies and me. Dr. Nemetz is the best, after visited 2 different vet, no one seem to be able to find out what exactly wrong with my bird. Thank God! I have found Dr Nemetz, he found the problem within the first hour during the first visit, he then took the time & CLEARLY explain EVERYTHING we needed to know about his procedures & the risk involved. I have a 12 year old cockatiel that was very sick and I am sure he would have died without Dr. Nemetz. He is an excellent vet. I wish I had known of him sooner in my birds life. I have learned so much about proper care and nutrition since going to him. My bird suffers from liver problems and once diagnosed and given proper care and medication he is doing 100% better. I took him once a week for 3 months for weight checks at no cost. While my bird was hospitalized I called daily or the Dr. called me with updates on his condition and what treatment he was receiving. My suggestion to anyone who has a pet bird is to see Dr. Nemetz before your bird gets sick for an initial checkup so you can avoid the problems I had to deal with. In my book he is the best. I have to drive 50 miles one way to the clinic but for the health of my bird it is worth it. read more

I have mixed feelings about this provider. He is NOT a certified avian practitioner, and it seems to me that a man who makes his living solely treating birds should go the extra mile and get that certification if he as skilled as he portends to be -- he is already paid at or above the rate of those who are certified (I realize you do have to go out of the county to get to a certified specialist). His bedside manner is terrible, at least in my opinion. As others have touched on, he spoke down to me, and phrased things in such a way that made me feel utterly stupid (I have responsibly raised and parented large birds for over 25 years and do know a bit about proper care, nutrition, etc.) I feel he is a bit too quick to head for a scapel without looking first to less intrusive and/or natural prevention and cures. I give him credit - he is good with a scapel and saved one of my birds who had become eggbound. However, his instructions were that she was to return in two weeks to be surgically spayed. While I realize this procedure is becoming more common, I spoke with 4 other certified avian EXPERTS all around the country (including one very famous one whose name I won't post here) and they all agreed that spaying her was way too drastic for a first instance of eggbinding -- meaning it should be the last resort, not the first. Obviously, I listened to the other experts and my bird is still "in tact" and doing fine with no repeat occurence of eggbinding ever since. Just don't feel confident my feathered kids are in the right hands here. read more
