Finally returned for an evening meal- Crispy Seoul Wings (a popular app choice)- crispy exterior, sticky glaze, Korean fried chicken-esque- what's not to like. Rock Shrimp- pretty basic tempura fried popcorn shrimp in a creamy gochujang (flavor profile similar to the wings). Seafood Tom Yum Soup, inhaled spice produced a cough before spoon fully reached my lips. I'm here for it! Not a seeker of super spicy, but growing tired of Asian dishes being constantly muted or made Korean-cloyingly sweet. The spice balanced & enhanced the Thai flavors of lemongrass & lime w/ mussels & rings of calamari floating in the broth. My Pad See Ew had that silky, savory, sauce- the depth of which sets it apart from other noodle dishes & is made more savory by adding Wagyu. Tried the Lamb Special- flavors were amazing! From the truffled mashed to the whole roasted onion. Portion could've been larger- they butterflied what looked to be a single, maybe double, lollipop, but presentation was great & flavors on point. Nice desert options- save room! Close seating, which we capitalized on! Made new friends AND tried their dishes- what all diners should do in this situation! Near the end of 2023 my dad was presented his long overdue Purple Heart from being wounded in Vietnam in Veteran's Day themed ceremony at Owen J. Roberts. We passed through Pottstown on the way home and decided to try out The Blue Elephant, initially drawn in by its name and stunning decor. The building itself is a former bank, so it retains architectural features like vaults, brass work, high ceilings and a strong sense of place. Inside you'll find a dramatic interior with a 10-foot fountain at the center of the main dining room, velvet blue booths, light blue drapery reaching up to the tall ceilings, and Mediterranean olive trees. The design is elegant, upscale, but still inviting. It doesn't feel overly formal and there's a sense of fun (i.e. historic photo of elephants in the lobby) yet it's polished. We ordered a whole slew of dishes spanning the culinary spectrum, including beef negimaki to start, a chicken sandwich with a side of homemade slaw, drunken noodles, and shrimp served with rice and greens. Then for dessert shared crème brûlée and a slice of rich and creamy cheesecake topped with chocolate crumbles. One of my favorite dishes, drunken noodles, was a delicious blend of wide rice noodles tossed in a bold, garlicky sauce with just the right hit of heat. The noodles soaked up the spicy, slightly sweet flavors while clinging to bits of vegetables and chicken, making each forkful smoky, saucy, and oh so satisfying. Dessert was definitely a standout based not only on flavor but also presentation. Is there a sweeter sound than the crackling of a crème brûlée's hard, sugary shell when the spoon takes that initial plunge into the cool, velvety custard hiding beneath? And the cheesecake... a beautifully plated, modern take on a classic dessert. A sleek rectangular slice of creamy cheesecake sat on a dark plate really made the colors pop. Around the plate, there were artful dots of caramel and dark chocolate sauce, glossy, mirror-like spheres that burst with sweetness with each bite dragged through them. The fresh strawberry slices tucked beneath the cheesecake brought a pop of color and a bright, refreshing contrast to the richness of the dessert. in the end, the Blue Elephant delivered on both style and substance, where the food tasted every bit as good as it looked. Between the grand, airy, light-filled room with soaring ceilings, the artful plating, and genuinely friendly service, it's the kind of place that would make any meal, any visit feel a little bit special. read more

What a find! We went here for Easter brunch. The buffet is an interesting combination of traditional breakfast foods like waffles, bacon and scrambled eggs, Thai dishes like tofu in a red curry and pad tai, a nice selection of sushi and beautiful deserts. There is absolutely something for everyone. Our server was wonderful and attentive. The quality of the food is excellent for the price. We all agreed that we preferred this over other brunch places we have tried. The overall feeling of the space is calm and welcoming. Hard to believe the building used to be a bank. We had dinner at the Blue Elephant in Pottstown on a Saturday. Compared with its Wayne counter part, the Pottstown location has more reservation availability. We got there around 5:45 pm and it's busy but not crowded. For starters, we had Kobe beef on hot stone which is fun to cook and taste OK. The Hokkaido bread is soft and tasty. The blue elephant roll is pretty standard. We ordered drunken noddle with chicken, tofu Pai Tai, and Macadamia encrusted bronzino. Among these, the drunken noddle tastes the best, full of flavor and spicy with a kick; Macadamia encrusted bronzino is fresh but kind of bland without much seasoning. The Pai Tain is our least favorite. Overall, the ambiance is pretty nice there. The restaurant was converted from an old bank and kept some of the lightening and decor. With so much hype around the blue elephant my expectations were extremely high but not met when it came to the food! The inside was as gorgeous as everyone described and the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. We went for dinner on a weeknight and We did have a large group but it took about 30 minutes for any food to come out. Drinks were good but the food was very bland. Between our entire group we ordered at least half of the menu and no one was satisfied with their food. We started with the Hokkaido bread which was really bland and not like other Hokkaido bread I've gotten at Asian restaurants. Dumplings and cheesesteak eggrolls were okay. The wings were the best appetizer we ate. Just the right amount of crispy and spicy. Three of us split the sushi boat. While the amount of sushi was excessive the sushi itself was very bland and the rice was cooked incorrectly. My brother got the Drunken noodles and our mother got the green curry lobster fettuccine. Both said their sauce was bland. One of my nieces also got a medium rare steak special but it came out well down and was overly seasoned with black peppercorns. Another one of my nieces ordered the gnocchi and said it was gummy. My last niece got the pappardelle and she said it was good but not for the price. Ensconced in the stately bank building at the corner of High and Hanover Streets, former home of the Brick House restaurant, the Blue Elephant is yet another entry in the Win Signature stable, a restaurant group owned by Win and Sutida Somboonsong. The restaurant's interior is striking: high ceiling accentuated with long draperies; gold mirrors; various plants & greenery; a 30-foot-long quartz bar and a series of comfortable velvet & leather booths filling the large open space... There is even a flowing marble fountain. On the other hand, the members of our party of five - this writer included - were wishing a bit more attention had been paid to the food and a little less to the décor. Once seated at table, appetizers proved to be the high point of the evening... Naturally, many of the usual suspects were present and accounted for - through often treated to a number of creative twists & turns: Rock Shrimp, for instance, encased in a crispy tempura batter and served with spicy aioli; Duck Confit Arancini (risotto balls) companioned by green curry remoulade; and the ubiquitous Cheesesteak Spring Rolls teamed with cheddar and pepper jack cheeses. Interestingly enough, it was the old-fashioned, unadorned Dumplings - stuffed with pork & scallions, gently steamed, and accompanied by a first-rate soy vinaigrette - that proved to be the table favorite. Coming in a very close second, however, were the Zucchini Fritters. That may not sound terribly exciting, but these were tempura battered and seasoned with shichimi togarashi, a zippy blend of seven Japanese spices. But the pièce de résistance was delivered courtesy of an incredibly irresistible melted Gorgonzola dipping sauce, which succeeded in propelling what could have been just another unexciting appetizer into gastronomic orbit. And though technically not a starter, the Potts Bread - which arrived in an actual flower pot - makes a first-rate accompaniment to any meal, especially when teamed up with a ramekin of miso honey butter. Up until this point, everything had been absolutely spot-on... Once the entrées arrived, however, disappointment followed not far behind. And, ironically, the most evident faux pas were not with the complex fusion dishes, as one might have expected, but with more traditional Thai favorites that certainly should have been "no-brainers" for owners with over thirty years in the business and an experienced kitchen staff even remotely familiar with Thai cuisine. Take my Drunken Noodles, for example... a relatively simple presentation basically consisting of stir-fried wide noodles, egg, chicken, and spicy Thai basil chili sauce. And here I freely give credit where credit is due... The infusion of spices was perfect for my palate. There was just enough heat to prompt an exhilarating "after burn" without causing irreparable damage to one's delicate nether regions... But... even after all this good work, the kitchen still somehow managed to mess up the chicken, which was woefully overcooked, as tough as Clint Eastwood's Rawhide saddle and twice as chewy. The Crab Fried Rice, another extremely popular Thai dish, also fell short. In addition to the crab, the other constituents included carrots, onions, scallions, eggs, and garlic soy sauce. Regrettably, the latter ingredient was conspicuous by its absence. Without the all-important sauce, the rice was the-bland-leading-the- bland. So bland, in fact, that the gentleman who ordered it declared it inedible and left it completely untouched. My dining partner was the only one in our party who chose what would be considered an innovative fusion presentation, the Stuffed Flounder. The filet was stuffed with crabmeat, smothered in cream of Parmigiano Reggiano and finished with a tiny tiara of Japanese tobiko (flying fish roe). The accompaniment was listed as a lemon asparagus salad, which turned out to be arugula. In her considered opinion - and my concurrence - the flounder was merely "okay" but not exceptional. In addition, the filet contained a surfeit of bones. With any fish, it is not unusual for an occasional bone to put in an unwelcome appearance... But there seemed to be an inordinate number of them here, as if this particular piscatorial representative had been haphazardly filleted and/or improperly checked over before preparation. Our group passed on dessert. It is, however, worth mentioning, as unlike most Asian restaurants, the Blue Elephant offers an intriguing assortment of sweet endings. There is no question in my mind that the Blue Elephant has the desire - and the potential - to be an excellent restaurant. However... given the rather odd missteps with regard to the entrées, one cannot help but wonder what strange culinary machinations may or may not be transpiring in the bowels of the kitchen. And until that problem is properly addressed, the restaurant's reach will continue to exceed its grasp. read more

Our last two visits to The Blue Elephant have been overshadowed by the same bartender, a male with glasses, whose service left much to be desired. The first time, we ordered a flight of sake while we still had cocktails, and instead of simply taking the order, he gave us side glances and refused to put it in until we finished our drinks. Not a huge deal on its own, but throughout the night he was extremely slow with our orders, almost as if he was intentionally pacing us. It came across as condescending and made the evening less enjoyable. The second time, the slow service continued, and I decided to skip cocktails altogether. My girlfriend, who is pregnant, asked if the salmon in the poke bowl could be cooked. Despite the fact that cooked fish is already on the menu in other dishes, the bartender refused, saying the kitchen was too busy--even after I asked him to check with a manager. We would have gladly waited longer for the accommodation, but instead, we felt dismissed and unimportant as guests. That said, we used to frequent the restaurant because the food here is consistently excellent and the atmosphere is welcoming, which is why it's such a disappointment to have the service fall so short. read more

Went today with my grown children for brunch at 1. We didn't know it was gonna be a brunch the website had nothing posted but the brunch was AMAZING! I love The Blue Elephant. FULL STOP. It's where my dashing partner took me for dinner on our first Valentine's Day together, and it's where we always go when we have something to celebrate. It's just a great spot. First off, let's talk about the space, because it's SUPER cool. It used to be a bank, originally built in 1770, and all of the original brass work, bank vaults, and fixtures were kept intact when the restaurant was designed. It's got impossibly high ceilings and there are olive trees and all manner of lovely things all around to make it a truly special place. Next, let's talk about the bar. Cocktails are a delightful part of celebrating something, whether it's a birthday or Valentines Day, a new promotion, or the fact that you made it through Wednesday. The bar here is pretty fantastic and the bartenders are truly creative. My favorite drink, and I get it every time we go, is called The High Caliber, and it's a lovely mix of gin, blueberry, and Prosecco. Finally, THE MAIN EVENT: FOOD. It's Thai, it's sushi, it's Asian Fusion... it's GOOD. I get sushi takeout from here often, and it's always terrific. When we dine in, my favorite dish is the green curry lobster fettuccine (I normally pass on seafood like crab or lobster in pasta because the sauces are generally so heavy that they obliterate the delicate taste of the seafood. The flavors here really let the lobster's flavor shine). I had it again this week and it was magnificent. The not-so-good news is that the aforementioned lovely partner ordered a soup with edamame and truffle tortellini, which sounded great. Reader, it was not great. Not remotely close to great. Our server, Jordan (who was awesome, by the way) could tell he wasn't enjoying the soup and she took it away. Then, our entrees came and he realized he'd ordered a dish that included the same tortellini. That dish was also quickly cleared away. He ended up with a plate of drunken noodles, which he said were divine. So the tortellini were an anomaly. In short, the place is great. The bar is great. The service is great. Our server had the right amount of sass and service. The sushi was really good, as were the dumplings and Kobe hot rock we had as apps. I enjoyed the gnocchi with lobster claw meat in a gochujang cream sauce. Hubs didn't care for his duck papardelle- hence a missing star. The pasta had a red curry sauce and the duck breast had a sweet sauce- they were in conflict with each other. Orange blossom creme brulee was nice. There's a good alcohol selection, too. I started with a blueberry gin cocktail that was sweet and delicious, and my partner ordered tea. We were a little bummed because he was looking forward to Thai Iced Tea, and they were out. I swear, almost every time I dine with my boyfriend, the establishment is out of what he wants - it happens to him more than anyone else I know. They were offering restaurant week for dinner. When I had researched restaurant week, I read somewhere that the special at Blue Elephant was only for lunch, so I hadn't expected to have the option for dinner. Regardless, I ordered off the restaurant week menu and opted for two specialty rolls: The High Street and The Philly Special. The rolls were delicious and filling. It was the perfect amount for a dinner. We topped of our meal with the Gooey Brown Butter Cake - and I was completely satiated. This was one of the nicest meals I've shared with my boyfriend. It felt fun and fancy and different without being extremely expensive. We had delicious food with appropriate portions, and we didn't leave feeling overstuffed like we often do when we dine out. Parking could be a bit tricky, and I'm not sure exactly how accessible this location would be for someone with mobility challenges. I've been here a few times and was honestly left disappointed each time. ): My family and I went to their Mother's Day brunch buffet last year, and there was an up charge for the price per person from the regular rate without any notice. I guess it can be expected on Mother's Day, but there was no notice on their website or when I reserved a table for Mother's Day. It was either a lack of transparency or poor planning on their part for the occasion. Also, we were seated at a table on the top balcony that day without being notified, which made it extremely difficult to carry our plates up and down the narrow staircase from the buffet tables. Today, I went here for happy hour and pricing on the happy hour physical menu was different from the happy hour menu on the website. Prices were increased, which is understandable during this time but again- another pricing inconsistency! The food runner brought out the wrong sushi roll for me, which I politely pointed out. It was mediated very easily. However, the trio of rolls I got (spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy yellowtail) were not good...the rice on each sushi roll was HARD, to the point that the texture felt like hard grains of uncooked rice. The restaurant is located in an old bank building with the historic architecture and gold accents. This gave it a more upscale vibe, but the noise level made it feel more casual. We started with the Kobe beef hot rock and toro(tuna) appetizers. The tuna wasn't that great, but the hot rock was fun and yummy. Our entrees were delicious! My husband loved the lamb. I was in a curried sauce that he very much enjoyed. My short ribs were so tender and the mashed potatoes were perfect. Ok, Pottstown diners... The inside of this restaurant has to be seen to be believed... Whatever amazing bank that used to exist in the space can clearly be seen in the bones of the architectural Blue Elephant, but the redesign/decor makes me smile every time I enter. It is a whimsical delight: velvety blue jewel-tone couches, well placed interior trees and greenery w/ a fountain center piece and classic patterned tile floors at your feet, soaring vaulted ceiling, half moon doors and windows w unique box trim, craftily placed wall decor and overlooking balcony tables where you can eat! You'll want to take pictures of your party in the space for sure. It is worth the trip just so you can associate Pottstown for good and for always with elegance. Then... I should recuse myself from discussing the waitstaff who are often past students of mine at OJRMS, but I must say they are the best in Chester County. Efficient, knowledgeable, and appropriately warm, and chatty. The food is wonderful, and it changes often, but the appetizers are inspired and delicious, and the staple seafood drunken noodles are a must try. (It is a heaping portion, so you will be able to have lunch and dinner the next day with your leftovers!) They always have signature drinks to try in vibrant colors and a very cool bar w happy hour!
