For a small restaurant, they serve some really good food. Our server Sarah was friendly and helpful. She really seemed to like her job and did it well. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxing. I just got back from eating at The Blue Onion for dinner and I am STUFFED to the max. My friend and I shared the dip sampler (barbequed shrimp, oven roasted garlic & olive oil, chevre goat cheese & roasted garlic) with flat bread. The garlic was wonderful if you are a garlic lover, whole cloves of garlic that were melt in your mouth soft. I ordered the shrimp & feta salad and ate the whole thing. It came with about 6 pieces of shrimp - the combo of the fresh greens, shrimp, feta, sunflower seeds, and balsamic vinegar was really satisfying. My friend ordered the pepperoni pizza. Really enjoyed my lunch here when I was here for work. I shared a flatbread sampler that was fresh and tasty and enjoyed by all. The Blue Onion is one of the better dining experiences I've had outside a large town. The walls were decorated with some great art (for sale), plus they had a nice jazz soundtrack going on (a little instrumental, a little Ella, and more nice tunes). The wine list was very good for such a small place, and the prices were great -- barely above retail. We had a 2005 Louis Martini Cabernet for $23. (they also have a full bar) We tried the flatbread sampler with three dips: artichoke, roasted pepper, and goat cheese/roasted garlic. The bread was light, nicely grilled, with a touch of olive oil, and all the dips were excellent. The rest of the menu is salads, sandwiches, and pizzas. We tried two salads and they were both very good, but the dresssings were excellent (and home-made, according to the menu). The blue cheese especially was good -- lots of fresh garlic in there, and a nice blue cheese bite. The waitress did a great job -- she took our order from memory, checked back enough to be attentive but not too much, and refilled the water as soon as it was low. The service does seem to be on-the-ball in general: a table near us had their order messed up, and they were given a free appetizer while they waited for the correction, no questions asked. Definitely a place I'd go back to, and would recommend. read more

They have the best salads in Mcallen. Vegetables taste fresh off the farm. Their iced tea is excellent as well. Pizza is nice and light. Their flatbreads and dips are nothing special. Only dip I actually liked was the hummus. Price is expensive for the amount you get, and ordering a side or extra dip costs almost as much as the full entree itself oddly. Waitresses are nice, but it can take quite a while to get your food. Wish they would have more a variety as well, but overall the restaurant is excellent. Blue Onion is a great restaurant as a whole, but compared to the countless other chain establishments in the area it's even better. It's refreshing to see a place with something other than enchiladas or botanas. The blue onion has been in McAllen for a long time now and it has a good clientele base. I think it really benefits from being different from your typical valley lunch spot, but if you are comparing it to options in other cities it falls short. What are the positives? It's different. They have a menu unlike any other in the area, fresh Mediterranean style salads and sandwiches. The prices are fine. The service is friendly and the ARTICHOKE DIP IS AMAZING! Seriously the artichoke dip is hands down the best thing here and alone worth eating here. Alright the negative: the food isn't impressive, it's just sort of ok. The pizzas are not impressive: kind of like a cracker with some toppings. The sandwiches are just ok. The chicken is just ok. I thought the flat bread was store bought, but I was told they bake it fresh (I couldn't tell, it doesn't seem any better than a package). Also it always seems smoky inside like it needs better ventilation. Bottom line is that I wouldn't suggest this place, but if someone wants to go there I'm happy to go eat artichoke dip. read more
