From Fort Erie Ontario Canada we have made special trips to this place for raw clams and oysters. We are exactly a half hour drive away, While the décor may not be the best I love the atmosphere. Everything else on the menu is good as well. I have never had anything that has made me ill and the staff seem friendly courteous. I've also stopped in while driving a friend to the airport. Recently I was introduced to the Boston Hotel. At first I had no idea what I was getting into. I had heard rumors of what a typical MONDAY night is like at this place, but to experience it first hand is something else. After a tough couple of weeks at work my bosses and a few co-workers took the time to venture out to Lancaster for a night of face stuffing. Now let me paint you a picture. I'm a larger guy who has a somewhat healthy appetite :-x haha and my one boss is a tiny man who happened to order 4 doz clams, 2 doz wings, clams casino and a few pitchers of beer... needless to say I was slightly intimidated! I started off with some wings and clams, but the atmosphere almost pressures you into wanting more and more because you can't go wrong with the prices. This place is not of the casual diners who enjoy a peaceful dining experience. It is loud, it is crowded, and you may not even be seated til 1030 or 11pm if you get there at 8 on Monday. Dined here last night (7/29) with a party of six. My first time dining here, but not the last. Our menu choices included fish fry, ribeye steak, scallops and seafood platter. All were of excellent quality and served hot. Also had lobster ( rock shrimp) for appetizer and cheese cake for dessert. Including drinks, the bill came in under what we would have expected. It was a dark and stormy night, the roads along I-90 packed with holiday drivers fighting their way home, and all I wanted was a warm meal and a place to watch Sunday Night Football. Given I had never been in the Buffalo area, it only took a quick search (thanks to NY state wifi at rest areas) to find a number of sports bars that looked like they might fit the bill. From the outside, Boston Hotel's Steak & Crab House doesn't look like much. It's not a hotel in any way, shape or form, instead taking the guise of a dive bar or diner stuck carefully on a back street off the highway. The entrance is adorned with neon and there are signs everywhere reminding you that only cash is accepted. The specials for the day are scrawled on a white board and a single page insert is slipped into the paper menus. I was surprised to find that despite the back alley look and feel of the place (a nuance I actually consider a merit rather than a detriment), the food was surprisingly good. Both I and my traveling companion had the New York strip, and it was excellent. Their side dishes weren't all that great, and though the lobster tail portion of my surf and turf was alright, it wasn't anything to write home about. A neighboring table ordered the shrimp scampi, and while I didn't order it myself, the scent smelled delicious. The menu said they stopped serving food at 10, but given that it was Sunday, we were warned upon our arrival that the kitchen closed at 9. Their selection of items isn't huge, but they have very reasonably priced steaks, the menu topping out at around $24 (specials excluded) for their huge king cut of prime rib. They also offered all sorts of simpler fare, such as the beef on wick for less than $5. My only regret was not asking if the iced tea was sweetened or not and ending up with a sugary concoction until I requested a fix. My family and I have been dining at this establishment for years, if not decades, and it's safe to say that it is a destination institution for a reason: their seafood is among the best you'll find in Western New York, both from a quality and a pricing perspective. To my knowledge, their menu of seafood, steaks, bar food, etc. hasn't really changed much as long as they have been in business, though they do regularly rotate their specials. Unlike a lot of similar dive-bar/restaurant joints in the area that serve fish and seafood, this proprietor has several fantastic fishmongers on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, which supplies the restaurant with exceptionally quality shrimp, clams, fish, crabs, and lobster. I'm unsure of where they get their meat from, but I've never had a bad steak at this place. Today's diners included myself, Mom, and my grandmother; three generations of blue-collar, working-class, hard-line Buffalonians of Catholic Polish decent. Naturally, being a Friday, we were there primarily for fish fry. As it was early in the day, we were seated without wait, and our waitress promptly took our drink orders and returned rather quickly. One of the hallmarks of this place is that much of the waitstaff has been here for years and take the time to get to know their regulars, which people like friendly chit-chat, which people just like to get their orders in and begin to eat post-haste. We're a little Column A and Column B. Our waitress, who has waited on us before, was efficiently speedy, getting in our orders and returning quickly, almost too quickly, with each course. Mom and I began each with a small shrimp cocktail, which consisted of five medium-sized gulf shrimp served atop a bed of ripped iceberg lettuce with a small plastic cup of the house cocktail sauce of ketchup and horseradish. Nothing fancy, but again, the focus at this place is on the seafood. The shrimp was, as it always is, delicious and flavorful. Not the watered-down variety you normally have from the frozen bag at Christmas. No sooner than we had finished with that, out came three-dozen, raw, freshly-shucked clams, a dozen for each of us at the table, served on a Styrofoam plate with ice. No fresh lemon wedges, no sauces, nothing. And, to be honest, you don't need them. The clams here are just THAT tasty. Incredibly meaty with a nice ocean brine, you can down them without needing to add flavor, like Gram does. I, being a bit of a pain pig, loaded on the excess cocktail sauce from the shrimp, and starting going to town on my clams like it was my job. Also, for $3.99 per dozen, raw or steamed, this is arguably the best deal on restaurant clams in Western New York. Just as we were about to finish our clams, our fish-frys arrived to add considerable weight and take up space on our table. Each fish fry plate comes with a full beer-battered and fried piece of wild-caught haddock, French fries (usually hand cut, but today our were noticeably not), potato and macaroni salads (again, usually homemade, but today I have a feeling that these were a pre-made Sysco brand, or other food service vendor product), a scoop of coleslaw, and a piece of rye bread with a pad of butter... All for $9.99. That is, quite honestly, both a deal and a steal. The fish was perfectly cooked, as the beer-battered crust stayed in-tact, and if you don't do beer batters, they will broil the fish, which I've heard is done well. Everything else on the plate, however, let a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if they have new cooks or are getting new products to serve as sides, but all of the sides were completely unseasoned and bland, the salads were on the drier side and lacked a lot of crunch (which isn't surprising, as diced vegetables in each were non-existent), and the coleslaw was considerable on the sweet, no, saccharin-sweet side. I'm glad I filled up on shrimp and clams in the previous two courses, because had I just ordered the fish-fry and relied on the sides to fill the void, I would have been considerably more disappointed with the overall experience. Even more so because once our uber-efficient waitress dropped off our main course, she vanished, never to be seen again until we were done with our meals and had to flag down one of the other waitresses on staff to get our check. Not a checkup on how the food was, if we needed refills on our drinks, nor to make sure that we all had a proper amount of silverware (our table was originally set for two people, not three). I never have any issue recommending this place to others, I just offer some pointers. One: no high-maintanence guests. Two: bring cash, they don't take plastic and nobody should have to use the ATM, the fees are just outrageous. Three: Call ahead if you have a large party. Was there this past Sunday night with my guy's family celebrating his dad's 81st birthday. I love Alden for it's small town feel and normally friendly service but that was not the case this time. We were a party of 8 and arrived at our reservation time of 7. Not sure if our waitress was set to leave or was just having a bad shift but her RBF was on as soon as we go to our table! As friendly as we were to our waitress, her attitude was absolutely awful from the beginning. First she was actually upset with us that our table was not set up for the 8 but 7. Five of us ordered a plate of mussels to start and when they came I asked if we could order (not be given for free) extra bread for dipping since there's only two slices ( I like carbs) and she said she had to go check if we could, then someone in our party ordered crab legs she told us that there were no crackers to break the crab legs! Then he asked if he could have a small fork to get out the crab but he was told there were no small forks to eat the crab legs. This is a seafood restaurant,right? When we asked her that same question her response was a shrug of the shoulders, turn of the lips and a "I don't know what to tell you response". She clearly did not want to be there! It literally seemed as though she knew nothing about the restaurant, the menu, what was still available that night and it was not a priority of hers. Now the ray of sunshine that helped buffer our server's bad attitude was a friendly waitress named Denise she actually noticed that there was a spill right near our 81 year old birthday boy, wiped it up, and then brought over a to-go container....our waitress didn't even come by to see if we needed anything. We all are pleasant people who love our 81 year birthday boy and wanted to enjoy a night out at a nice restaurant. Yet everyone was like "what was up with our waitress??" The person in the kitchen couldn' keep 3 identical orders straight ie: 12 clams on one plate( ok ), next plate came out with over a dozen but they didn't know how many. It's not in Boston, and I don't think it's even a hotel, so that should tell you something right there. This place has to be one of the biggest disappointments on the local food scene, mainly because everyone and their mother kept telling me to go here, and indeed it's so busy that there is a long line out of the door every night, especially on the night when they have cut price food (I can't remember which night that is). However I now realize why everyone loves it. Two reasons actually. One, it has incredibly cheap seafood. And two, and most importantly, it serves tons of alcohol, which is more important to people than food these days, by quite a considerable margin. But if we're talking about the food itself, I don't care how cheap it is, this is some of the worst-tasting, most bland, most unimpressive food I have ever tried. The wings were below average at best and all of the seafood was basically puke-worthy. It's rare for me to give a family owned place as low as a 2, let alone a 1, so the rating on this one should give you a clue as to how bad it is, but if you'd like to wait 2 hours for a table so you can get drunk on horrendous cheap seafood that is even worse than Red Lobster, knock yourself out. The seafood platter is a great option if you want to sample lots of different things. Today I had the broiled haddock. The fish was delicious.....fresh and flakey, it was cooked perfectly. I also got the clams casino which is a must for me and one of my favorites in this area. I also had the lobster dainties. I usually love them, but for some reason was not impressed this time. First off I don't know if I'm blind or if it's their signage but the fact that they don't accept anything but cold hard cash was everything but obvious! I went here with my colleague and ordered crab legs. At the time of order we were only the 2nd table in the dinning room. By the time we were served 6 other tables had been sat and fed. The waitress behaved as if she had no time for us and wasn't necessarily rude but wasn't a joy. Especially since she never mentioned the cash only thing upon ordering. Oh did I mention the signage I found for "cash only" is about a 3 inch by two ft long white sign above the exit to the bar. Who the hell is going to notice that on their way in?!? Anyhow we get to the bill portion of the meal and then she decides to inform us of the policy. So ok fine your restraunt is still stuck in the 50s. But she didn't even let us know there was an ATM in the corner of the bar. I awkwardly got up and looked for it trying not to look like a dine and dash. It was just awful. Not to mention that sketchy ATM charged me so there went the tip. Oh not to mention the bill she gave us was not even a printed out bill. It was receipt paper that the printer clearly messed up with her pen scribbles on it. And for their prices you would think the place would be a little more upscale than a back country dinner and a little more with the 21st century of card or cash. Also the crab was good, came out hot but the butter I swear was ole and not butter at all, tasted weird. And the lemon juice sitting on the table in the jar tasted nasty. Together these two ruined the crab. Who charges $25 for crab and doesn't give you fresh lemons and good butter..?? You could smell and see the cleanliness and knew they were doing whatever they could to keep you safe. Our server was fantastic and we had zero issues. Now....the food.... I've been here before and have had excellent food. I don't know if it's due to covid or a change of staff or what but the food......we ordered a lot and I was very disappointed. I ordered a sirloin qith crab legs as an add on. The steak wasn't a sirloin and was riddled with veins so much that I couldn't chew it (I have dentures). The crab must have had freezer burn or something because it was sticking to the shell and what I got out tasted chalky. My stepson ordered clams casino. We all tried them and the amount of salt in them was enough to make me gag. The diet soda I ordered was flat and you could taste some sort of cleaner that they used on the glasses. I expected more since I spent over $130 in food on 3 people. Like I said, I'm not sure if this is all due to covid because I've had great experiences in the past but I was very very disappointed this time around and won't be going back anytime soon read more
