Pizza Box (PB) came recommend by a coworker fromNY. This is our second time ordering from PB - and WOW. I mean yes, our pizza had a minor issue that was fixable with a little love from a hot skillet at home. But my WOW is really for their customer service. I called to let them know and the gentleman on the phone was just that, a freakin GENTLEMAN! He was so understanding, apologetic and accommodating! If you're in the Portsmouth area and want an amazing meat to cheese ratio, fantastic tasting crust or hell a decent pizza shop lamb gyro - HIT UP PIZZA BOX! I am for sure a fan of their standard classic pizzas but my husband LOVES their stuffed. Just know that with a pizza that THICKKKK, you might need to show it some love with a hot skillet to get that steamed and soggy bottom back up to the standard that PB has in store! This was the BEST pizza I've had anywhere in Virginia. I am a big time pizza person! I love pizza and Pizza Box did not disappoint me!! I got the stuffed pizza with extra cheese and it was so delicious and HUGE. My husband can't eat red sauce so he got the Bianca pizza and it was also delicious!!! I couldn't decide which one I liked more. The veggies on the pizza were so fresh. We also got a Greek salad to share while we waited for the pizza and 1 was large enough for my husband and I to share. The salad was amazing and all the flavors blended so well... I ordered delivery and it was extremely good. Arrival time was good. Pizza was hot. Cheese gooey. Ingredients fresh. My only complaint was that half of the bottom of my pizza--about five slices--was burnt black. I couldn't get through them. I'm assuming they have a brick oven? Not sure. But I'd check the bottom before accepting the delivery in the future. But the pieces I did have were worth me attempting to visit in person. I'm giving them a four based on the potential of my next experience being better. I intend to try them in person and update my review as well. read more

Had the chance to frequent this business several times as it is one of my co-workers favorite places in Portsmouth, and both times I was pleased with the food. The store itself is more like a house more than anything. It could be easily missed if it weren't for the amazing smells coming from the store. The first time I got the Italian sausage and wrapped in all the aluminum foil was heaps of sweet bell peppers and onions on top the juicy sausage. It was one of the better Italian sausage sandwiches I have had in a while. The second time we got several pizzas. While the pizzas were large, they were also quite expensive. SO many options! A bit overwhelming at first because I've never had to choose from such a large selection of pizzas. My date and I settled on the stuffed pizza with meat (pepperoni, salami, ham, and something else), 16" for $19. This was like a double layer pizza and the crust was perfectly chewy and crispy. Former employee here. I came into work Friday to learn that for the past week or so, they have been serving food that is held at 50-60 degrees. Food is being held at dangerous temperatures for hours on hours. I would not recommend anyone eat here. We came in because the sign said 16" pizzas are $9.99. After ordering our pizzas we were informed that one of our pizzas was not part of the special because it contained "other" ingredients. Asking further, literally every other pizza listed as being 16" was on the special except for the one we ordered... Only one pizza not on special because of other ingredients just happens to be the one we order and it's not marked as such on the board as not being part of special? It used to be much more moderately priced and the food was well prepared. I will probably not be going back now, though. Apparently its under new management and it definitely shows, in a bad way. Everything costs an arm and a leg and you definitely DO NOT get what you pay for. The last few times the food was just thrown together quickly, really skimping on toppings, especially ricotta. For what thy charge it shouldnt just be thrown together like fast food with barely any toppings. The calzones are even way smaller than they used to be. Very dissatisfied with the new management, i will save my money and get chanellos next time, same quality product for way cheaper. read more

5-star first impression. We just moved to the area and are finding our new favorite places and would/will definitely return here. Pizza was ready and waiting by the time I arrived, though they said they also do free deliveries. I noticed some reviews said the neighborhood was sketchy--it just feels like an older neighborhood. The Pizza Box is small, but well lit and easy to find. We got the Bianca with black olives, red peppers, mozz, and ricotta--delicious. Wouldn't change a thing. The Yelp reviews were all very positive, so we had very high hopes! It was a little odd there was not a full menu I could locate online. Only a partial menu on Yelp, and a few pictures that people had posted of the actual menu on the wall (not the best quality.) The delivery service was great, they got here in a timely manner and the pizza was still hot! We ordered 2 mediums, which when we received them they were more of the size of a large/XL. That being said, there's not many times where I've had pizza and thought to myself, "I don't know if I can finish this slice because it's not good". After two pizzas from Pizza Box now, I'll be honest, I'm a little torn. The first pizza I picked up was a meat lovers stuffed crust and I was so happy to have found an awesome pizza place that set itself apart from the rest here in HR! The crust was so flavorful, the toppings abundant, the sauce well seasoned. When I came to pick it up, though, the owner was not only not very friendly to me, but he was yelling at his employees in front of a room full of customers. AwKwArD. My memory of the pizza was so good that it outweighed my brief owner experience and I finally convinced myself to pay the new tunnel toll and go back. The owner, again, was not so friendly on the phone. When he didn't understand something I said, he kept saying "what?!" in a derogatory tone and when I asked for a substitution on my pizza, he quipped "oh, so you don't want that pizza at all then." I was prepared for the attitude, so I shrugged it off. When I came in, again he was yelling at his employees (umm, why do they work here again?). I ended up tipping on my takeout anyway (for fear of being yelled at for not). My second pizza was just a classic, thin crust (not stuffed) new york style and it was just...okay. Honestly? It was nothing like the first. Mushrooms (1 of 3 toppings, and unfortunately, my favorite) were extremely scarce, the crust was crunchy but tasteless, and overall lacked much character. On the plus side, I did get the Saturday $10 for 16'' deal (11a-4p), so it didn't cost me much. Overall: My first pizza was great! Second was far from it. The owner seems a little callous (maybe that's just a new-yorker/jerseyer attitude?), which made me pretty uncomfortable on behalf of the employees. While the stuffed was very good, I don't intend on paying the toll to come back to Pizza Box. I'll stick with Del Vecchios down the street who has pleasant service and multiple forms of pizza that have never let me down. read more

I have just recently discovered it, actually my Mom found this place, and now Pizza Hut and Papa Johns and Domino's are pretty much not allowed in her home. She is completely sold on these pizzas. You can get an 'extra-large' sized pizza here which is more than enough to feed a family of four. They deliver (within a certain amount of miles) or you can get carry-out. You can also eat inside of the Pizza Box but let me tell you it is extremely tiny inside. When I say tiny, I mean there are probably like 5 tables and it's extremely hard to get one during dinnertime.If you do go in they have a great menu chalked up on the board with pasta specials, pizza options and more. I suggest trying delivery or carry-out and getting the Roma pizza. read more
