Based on Yelp reviews I ordered food delivered from here last night. Thank you, thank you, thank you Yelpers!!!!! This place is GREAT! They told me delivery would be in 45 - 50 minutes but it actually arrived in 30 minutes. I love it! Under promise and over deliver. The food was really good. I had sausage and peppers with spaghetti. Their sausage and peppers is not as good as mine. But in all fairness, no one else's ever is. Theirs was very, very good. I also ordered a salad and it was fresh and perfect. I'm not a big eater so I found the portions plentiful. That means I was able to save some for today! Happy, happy, happy! So, the saga continues. My friend and I decided to try the pizza two days later. OMG we had the white pizza with spinach, garlic and mushrooms. My friend declared this to be the best pizza he had ever had. I say it's the second best I have had but the first was in Michigan in 1962. So, considering all the pizza I have ever eaten, this is the best in 50+ years. Um great find! We never go to Portsmouth but wanted to try Aldis and decided to have lunch at this place before hand.... it was such a find. We pop in here regularly. We love it. They always have specials and the pizza is consistently well done. They don't char the bottom like the rest of the brick oven spots. Pizza Box has the best pizza in Hampton Roads. It is true New York style pizza -- delicious!! I also love the Greek salad here. They always use fresh ingredients and season everything to perfection. I see some fellow reviewers have commented on the owner. Yes, he can be loud and a bit abrasive. But if you take a moment to converse with him, he's a perfectly lovely, reasonable person. Really amazing pizza. Ordered takeout from here last night and was very impressed. We got the Friday special, $13.99 for an extra large pepperoni. We went simple just to try out the place and see if we liked it, and we were not disappointed. Sauce was good, great balance of cheese and crust, just really yummy. I would have given it a 5star review, but we ordered extra pepperoni and they charged us for extra pepperoni but it definitely didn't seem like there was any extra in comparison to their other pictures. Overall though, really happy with our takeout and will definitely be back. Hard to find good authentic pizza around here and Papa John's just doesn't cut it for us. read more

This is definitely a hidden gem. Its on a side street in downtown Portsmouth. Kind of a small dining room but it was nice and intimate, would be prefect for a date. The staff were very welcoming. The serve daily specials which is nice, I went on a Friday so it was an extra large pepperoni pizza for $13. The pizza was delicious, the crust was crisy but not dry, and they didn't hold back on the toppings. I will definitely be coming back for more. read more

Place itself was very clean & nice. As I stood in the restaurant i couldn't help but laugh as all the reviews about the owner became real. He's very aggressive and makes the environment very tense. I found this restaurant a few weeks ago and decided to give it a try tonight. I ordered 3 pizzas; a cheese, a pepperoni and the Brooklyn. They were all very delicious. I loved how thin the crusts were and how there was just the right amount of sauce. Service was quick for a Friday night at 530, with quite a few costumers dining in and to go orders coming in for pick ups. We will definitely be coming back here again. read more

The best pizza in the area. Being from New Jersey we had given into the fact that we were going to forever eat dough thick pizza. There are some good ones but, this place is great. Have to eat a white with spinach and mushroom each visit. Just put together very well. Ask for light sauce if you are doing a red, it think all the reds need a little cooling time before ready for consumption. The owner can seem surly but, has high standards and is busy trying to grow a business. Maybe just tone down some of the New York. =) If you go on Saturday between 11:00am-4:00pm 16" pizza are all $9.99 I enjoy trying a new one each visit with the white/spinach/mushroom. read more

This is by far my favorite pizza place in Portsmouth. Their sauce is clearly the winning recipe component. Flavorful and rich but not overpowering. The cheese is also delicious and plentiful. Followed by unique styles of pizza. The Stuffed Pizza is a MUST. Their pizzas remind me of the quality I used to get from good New York and Connecticut restaurants. If you are reading this and have never been there, order now. Their pizza is amazing even on an bad day. My only dislike is the available parking on Detroit St. near the restaurant, but it's eclipsed by the quality pie you will receive. Five Stars. read more

So this is a really bare bones kind of place. No alcohol. No website. No kids menus or high chairs. One server for the entire dining room. One size of pizza. Water or soda. In a can. Period. Talk about low overhead. The owners must be making a KILLING. They had some random oldies radio station playing in the background that kept going through the local frequency tests with that high pitch screech. Really? Invest in a nice musik CD or XM radio. ANYTHING. This is the type of place where you need to be in the mood to just come and order a pie in very close vicinity with all the other tables and go home. Maybe good for a dinner with the rents? Good clean fun. All that aside, the pizza is pretty awesome. We ordered the stuffed eggplant, motz, & pecorina pizza and added proscuitto. The crust is amazing; my first slice I didn't taste any proscuitto or eggplant so I don't think the toppings are added that liberally. The server also noted they have salads, which aren't listed on the menus for some reason. Why do that? I don't know, stuff like that annoys me. I like to look at a website. I like to have all my options listed out for me. It's 2013, let's get with people. I think if we lived closer, we'd definitley opt for takeout from this place because they have such a wide variety of toppings but I don't think I'd ever eat in again. I really wish that they had a website. A friend had recommended we order pizza from them, so we did. Without a menu to go off of, we ended up ordering half with what he likes (pepperoni) and half what I like (tomato). I wish that the delivery guy had sent a menu with us, or that they had a website to go use for our order, because we were a bit disappointed. The pizza choices in Hampton Roads......well to put it nicely kind of suck. Pizza Box is a pretty good place, but the location is kind of bad. The pizza is good, but the over-all feeling/mood in the store is a dark feeling. I read previously that the owner was chewing out employees in front of customers.....and I was like "what a petty thing to write." Well to my surprise.......there he was chewing out another employee when I arrived......so much that he did not even acknowledge me.....a new customer. So much for first impressions and customer service. The NY style pizza was pretty good.......about a C+, but I will never go back there......because they don't seem to give a crap about customers. We went here based off the reviews after going to the Children's Museum. We drove past it twice, as I was not aware that it was located in a converted house. Small tight seating area. The waitress had a hard time getting between the tables. The waitress had to reach over a customer to get into the breaker box to turn on the lights. Greek salad was good. They have a large unique pizza menu but we stuck with our favorite, pepperoni and pineapple. The pizza did not live up to expectations, in fact the underside of the crust was burned. It also had little cheese and sauce. Had we not been tired and looking forward to go home I would have sent it back. This is a unique place but definitely not near the best pizza in Hampton Roads, but rather one of the worst. Fresh and creative! This is our standard Saturday lunch. The Sicily is very good with shrimp, olive oil and pesto! The Hawaiian and the Crete with lamb are two more of our favorites. The sausage on the New York is good, but this pie pales next to their other offerings. Still outstanding! Last month my wife and I had a miscommunication and both arrived home with 2 pies. I recently moved to Portsmouth and I'm now setting out to find my local favorites. I stumbled upon Pizza Box in a lovely Yelp search. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan pizza. It was good. The crust of the pizza is thin and crispy and chewy. It has an appropriate cheese to sauce ration. My guy liked the Chicken Parm, I wasn't bowled over by it, as it was a few wispy strips of chicken spread about a large pizza. If you are looking for an overly stuffed trash pizza, don't go looking here. This pizza is handmade. Prices are fair. I will try a different type next time. They know how to make the crust just right with fresh ingredients where you can taste the difference. Someone else mentioned in their review about the location.. it's a very small older building in Portsmouth. Kind of a small cozy house. They do not serve alcohol, only canned soda but it doesn't matter because the food is so good. We have also ordered entrees. Go pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed. read more

Great experience! Saturday night with party of 5. Prompt service from Haley, a server that has a personality and was fun to interact with. Place is spotless, bathrooms included, service was fast and food was fantastic. Menu boards offer plenty of different types of pizza's as well as a few other Italian entrees. Negatives? We are just outside of their delivery area (we will just have to go pick up or dine in), and we really wanted to try the Greek salad but they were out of lettuce. If you like NY style pizza then this is the place for you. If not, you will not like it at all. Born and raised in Brooklyn, trust me it's what you would get there at any really good pizza place. Probably because the owner is from NYC. If you like Pizza Hut or Dominos you will think the pizza is "burnt". To me it should have some char on the bottom of the pie, but that's what I like because I'm from Brooklyn where "gimmee a slice" is one of your first spoken words. Normally I have to ask Dominos to "bake it longer please" when I order from them, not saying it's bad (no such thing as bad pizza!) it's just a whole different type of pizza. That said I love the heck out of this place. It's small, they crowd you in (again just like NYC) and there is lots of chatter from the staff (again just like NYC).
