Had lunch planned with a friend for today and read the review by Heather McPherson in the Sentinel on Sunday, so thought this would be a great place for us to go for a late lunch. This is a very nice, very cozy, comfortable place with more dining tables outside. The staff was as friendly and helpful as could be. At first glance, there is so much on the menu and you might wonder how they can do all that and well at the same time. Because of the size of the menu, it took us a little while to order, but then we were in no rush & neither did we feel rushed at any time during our stay. My friend ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and I had the Grouper sandwich. I was going to order it blackened, but when I asked the server if the blackening was spicy she said no, but also added that she doesn't like blackening nor spicy food. To me the main part to blackening a piece of meat is for the proper spices used. So, with that said, I decided to go with fried. The grouper that was served was an oversized plank falling all over the kaiser roll. It was served with homemade tartar sauce that was just yummy and I opted for the french fries. At first glance, it was definitely a nice sized portion, but when I picked up the sandwich, the heft of it blew me away. The grouper was breaded and fried to a nice crispiness on the outside, but was still moist and flaky inside. In other words, perfection!! The fries were nicely done, but just a tad salty, not that stopped me from finishing them off. Now to the saltiness. My friend asked me to taste her sandwich because at first she felt it was just so oversalted. I did take a bite, but didn't taste it at first and maybe it was where I took the bite from. Because, as I was finishing it up I caught a saltiness that appeared to be coming from the vegetables in the sandwich. So maybe the chef might have had a touch of a heavy hand with the salt, but none of our meal was surely unpalatable. All in all, I look forward to going back there and possibly for dinner. I continue to struggle with The Breezeway. They are SO inconsistent. I've had great service and also been forgotten about. Many times them seem short staffed. A ton of locals love this place but I'm still not sold on it and I've been at least six times. They run out of food often and twice were out of Bud Light - huh? Who runs out of Bud Light??? Honestly, I think they need to tighten the reigns with their staff and have a better process for ordering their inventory so they rarely would be out of something offered on the menu. Perhaps it was just an off night for The Breezeway crew last night; this being our first time having stopped in for an evening meal there, there's no way for us to be sure. The service was alright. They were obviously busy and our server was training someone. So taking that into consideration, I give the service 3 stars. I ordered a $7 glass of Pinot Noir that as soon as it was placed in front of me I could tell it was from a two-day opened bottle at best. The vinegar smell was obvious. So as not to risk getting another glass from the same bottle, I ended up trading in for a glass of Chardonnay that was much better. As for the meal, I ordered the house special which was three breaded grouper filets served in a white wine lemon-butter sauce with side of linguine and a twice-baked potato. My fiancé opted for the fried shrimp with twice-baked potato for a side and a side salad. The bread that was served prior to the arrival of the salad tasted like a prefab frozen bread with a last minute attempt to dress it with a scarce few crumbs of asiago. It even looked like a last minute idea. The salad arrived with what was supposed to be bleu cheese dressing. Soupy and tasting more like a mix of thousand island with ricotta cheese, it was probably the poorest excuse for bleu cheese dressing I've come across in a while. The food arrived after some time. When it did arrive, again, I could immediately see that it had been sitting back in the kitchen for a while. The white wine lemon-butter sauce had already congealed. The twice-baked potatoes looked twice-baked and three-times frozen prior to. The only thing on either of our plates that was remotely hot enough to serve was my fiancé's shrimp. When I explained to our server that the food was just plain cold, she apologized and found the manager (or owner, I'm not sure what he was). He apologized as well and attempted to re-do our meals. I explained that we would just like to pay for drinks and move on with our evening. He was gracious enough and again apologized. He comped the meals, but we did pay for our drinks. Good enough. Now we have eaten Sunday brunch there before on a couple of occasions (they no longer do Sunday brunch, unfortunately) and it was fantastic. The cheesy grits they served were delicious and they fried their eggs in bacon grease which, to me, is the only way to fry eggs. I know that horrifies some of you out there. Not only was the breakfast excellent but their coffee was delicious to boot. I started to look forward to our Sunday morning breakfast at The Breezeway, but sadly, that's a thing of the past. read more

We had lunch at The Breezeway yesterday. We went there because they have live entertainment (which was excellent, BTW). Our server was Tiffany. Several things really impressed me. The food was great, with huge portions. The fried mushrooms are awesome (get the "Tiger" sauce") The wedge salad was HUGE and very well done - more than I could eat. My wife had the chicken caprese salad - also huge, with a great presentation. Tiffany was very much on top of everything. I was especially impressed that she was was very attentive to drinks at our table - always quick with refills and checking to see if we needed anything. Tiffany, along with great food, make this a place you will want to visit, for sure. read more

We randomly stopped in here as we were strolling around the area. The cute patio with string lights caught our attention and there was live music! We had a few drinks at the bar which were great. The server was notified of a patron that had a hearing disability and requested the music be turned down. It eventually turned down for a few minutes then right back up. Others at the table also thought it was too loud. It was so loud it was difficult to carry on a conversation. Music in a restaurant should be in the background not drown everyone out. It's troubling that this is the norm. Possibly because so many people are used to having audio piped into their ears with headphones of some type. BUT!!!! the service was not... our bartender was amazing until her "boss" came around and scolded her infront of us for pouring a tad too much when she made our tinis... As a manager myself, that is rude and horrible management. We also were served less than par calamari...frozen season less calamari does not hit the spot. The mussels were great and so was the bread. They have remodeled it and made it a lot brighter so that's great. But...there's a new place right next door that offered MUCH better service so I'll be heading over there first. SORRY! read more

Food here is great and the portion size is good. The prices are a little higher then what you will find on their website. Maybe they need to update it. You can sit inside or outside. Sometimes they have a one or two man band. On the weekend it can get loud outside. The outside chairs and tables could use an update. The chairs uncomfortable as hell and leave marks on bare legs. Maybe buy some pads for the chairs?Please!. I go here once a month and never disappointed with the food. Service is hit and miss depending on how busy it is. read more

I have gone to Breezeway twice now, and absolutely LOVE the Fresh Fish sandwich! I tried it once, and came back a second time just to get it! The location of Breezeway is in quaint Historic Sanford. I like this charming area filled with old shops and restaurants. I stopped here because they have outside seating and I can bring my pup. The outside seating area is pretty nice. It's in a alleyway and there is even an area where local musicians sometimes play. This trip, I wanted to try the crab cakes out for size. Being that my family is from Maryland, I seem to be pretty particular about crab cakes. These were above average. There was more crab meat than filling (how I like). They could have used a little more spice, but you could taste the freshness of the crab which was the best part! Crab cakes with imitation crab meat =NO BUENO. The remoulade sauce on top wasn't the best, but not the worst either. The waitress this go around was very nice, and even had doggie treats in her pocket! For the main dish, of course I went back to the Fresh Fish Sandwich. I got a blackened Mahi Sandwich with Gouda cheese. It's served on a Kaiser Roll with veggies and a side of homemade tartar sauce which is pretty tasty! The portion is HUGE. Giant chunks of fish! It can get a bit messy, but you won't mind after the first bite. You definitely get what you pay for, however this does lead me to the costs. Breezeway is a bit pricey, but if everything is fresh, I'm fine with it. I'd don't mind paying extra for quality. My advice is to go there when you're NOT on a budget. Also, go when you have some time to spend. It does take a bit to get your food, but everything is made to order and worth the wait! read more

Saturday afternoon. Around 3pm. Half the tablels are empty. Wait staff walking around trying to look like they are busy. A few standing around at the bar. We sit down at an outside table. 4 of the wait staff walks by our table & even LOOKS at us. 10 MINUTES later a waitress walk over & tells us we need to check in at the podium in front of the front door to the indoor dining area. BUT -- she says, "I'll be right back with menus." Ok. She comes back & say, "Actually ... theres a 10 minute wait. We're short staffed." SERIOUSLY? Half the tables are empty, you had wait staff hanging around DOING NOTHING. Husband goes over to the podium to express with discontent to the little girl handling the podium. As he walks away, I witness this immature, totally RUDE, Miss Thing laughing at him, looking at him snickering as he's walking away & is standing there giggling with this other do nothing waiter. I get mad & walk over to her and ask her what she finds so funny? The MANAGER is standing next to her and ABSOLUTELY SAYS NOTHING. NO APOLOGIES .. NOTHING. After telling her she should be ashamed of herself and should not be in customer service, we crossed the street, walked down the block, walked into CHRISTO's, which was JUST as busy (ALL there tables had people seated at them except for a one or two inside), got seated IMMEDIATELY and had a waiter at our table within SECONDS. This is the 5th restaurant in this location in 9 years and one of the top 3. The new owner put what appears to be a fair amount of investment into the new place and I think so far it works. We had lunch there today and really enjoyed the food which appeared to be made fresh and by hand. The mozzarella wedges (fried cheese) and marinara was excellent, although 4 pieces would have been better for the price. The chicken salad sandwich was nice and light and very tasty, made with chunk white meat, mayo, celery, onion and dill. The burgers were good and juicy with a basic seasoning for a decent burger. My mother had a fried eggplant sandwich, noting it was light (not heavy fried) cut into thin layers and delicious. As always the outdoor breezeway seating is a nice atmosphere and of course dog friendly. The only draw back to outdoor seating is the smokers. I think this is the place that will last fairly long in this location. We will definitely return. read more

Came here last night for a dinner with a group of friends, and if it weren't for the great company this could have been a real bummer of a night. Our group of four got sat right by the heavily foot trafficked kitchen, which is also along the route to the restroom, even though there was hardly anyone else inside the restaurant. The waitress was hard to pin down, and took forever with our drink orders and food. With the lack of people in the restaurant the food took incredibly too long to get out of the kitchen. I ordered The Big Chick buffalo style with mild sauce. When it came out I don't think it had any blue cheese on it, as described by the menu, and it was so bland! Had absolutely not flavor. I had to ask for a side of medium sauce just to get it to taste like anything. At one point during dinner there was also a terrible sewage smell coming from the back which was wholly unpleasant and didn't instill much confidence in the back of the house. When we got the checks we were also mischarged by about $8 for a bottle of wine, which needed to be corrected. If you're going to eat in Downtown Sanford, I highly recommend popping across the street to Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe instead and spare yourself a headache. read more

Thankfully, this was one of the few restaurants opened on Sunday around 4:30. There was music playing and that's always welcomed when you sit in the "breezeway" on a beautiful day. The hostess was attentive and welcoming. I ordered The Big Fish grilled and it was a big piece of fish that I wish I could have taken a picture of but I couldn't wait to dig in! I wasn't disappointed! Delicious! My companion ordered The 1/2 Mile High, pastrami, which we turned into a Reuben and it was delicious too; however, we wish they hadn't forgotten the thousand island dressing which was then brought on the side. The hostess was awesome and super accommodating and our waitress Stephanie was one of the best waitresses I've ever had. We ordered the big fish...it was completely raw in the middle. Had to knock on the door because our waitress was I'm guessing way to busy to check up on us. But I have a feeling she was annoyed some of our party didn't know much English as her facial expression with their broken English said it all. Regardless I had to knock on the cooks door to tell them my food was not cooked. They came out 10 or so minutes later with a fresh piece and said sorry the cook was new and put in a frozen filet? I guess they don't check food temperature here to ensure it's cooked thoroughly. We won't be returning. My dad and I came here for dinner one night. We sat outside and waited for someone to come wait on us which took a little while. I ordered the blackened mahi tacos with Cajun rice. My meal was good, mahi was a little dry but all around good. My dad had the shrimp and grits, which he said were pretty good, and the seasoned vegetables which he also said were pretty good.
