Came here a while back with my lady and a group of friends. Wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first, but definitely came out a fan. I'm definitely a fan of coming here with at least 4-5 people, so that you can sample more of the menu, and really get a good idea of what this place is about. They have about a million different beers, and the bar tenders are magicians in the art of crafting the perfect drink. Quite simply, I love this place! I no longer live on the east coast, but when I'm in town to visit family, I'm sure to be found here! I used to love taking out-of-towners to this restaurant/bar with the split personality. Upstairs is kinda fancy, with nice paintings, couches and little tables set up. In the back is a classy dining area. The place is softly lit throughout. Things take a turn once you go down the steps in to the basement. Here, it feels like you are in a dark pub. There are nooks and crannies everywhere, and the music is turned up. Upstairs or down, the place is usually packed with a good assortment of people, all having a nice drink and good conversation. The other things I can mention would just be a repeat of the other reviews, but I'll say it anyway. To begin with, the house beers are delicious and STRONG. Especially the Ozzy and the Resurrection (my favorite). Down a few of those and you will be set for the night. Special attention needs to be given to the Garlic & Rosemary Fries ... these are the fries by which all other "garlic fries" have been compared ... I cry when I eat other offerings. If I had to write anything negative, it would be that parking in the area sucks, but that pretty much holds for anything up that part of Charles Street. I've been to Brewer's art about twenty times and the place has really grown on me so I thought I would write a more fleshed out review. AMBIANCE: One of the big draws of Brewer's is the downstairs. It's like a dungeon that's full of drunk twenty-somethings and I think the mood lighting makes everyone drink more. It tends to get really loud and crowded but if you can snag a corner booth or a little table, it can be a really fun and intimate time because you have to lean really close to whoever you're with and still pretty much shout for them to hear you. Upstairs, the bar is a lot quieter and you can get food from the whole menu (downstairs I think is limited to the bar menu) and the bartenders are always really efficient. The back of the upstairs is the dining room, which is pretty fancy. Brewer's is like three different dining/drinking experiences in one place. DRINKS: Everyone loves the resurrection and all their beers are pretty tasty- for some reason, I always get a terrible hangover after drinking their beer and I want to say it's because they are fairly 'sweet.' I love their cocktail list and it's constantly changing. I had their blackberry bramble and it was delicious- blackberries, bourbon, lime, sugar, and some sort of herb. Boozy, a little sweet, well rounded. FOOD: They serve the bar menu until 11 and most of the food that I've tried there has been incredibly delicious. They also use really fresh ingredients that you wouldn't see at regular bar. Case in point, the last time we went, my boyfriend had their take on a BLT- crispy pork belly, crisp lettuce, fat slices of heirloom tomatoes. I had a "veggie cold cut" which blew my mind: Juicy sungold tomatoes, soft milky buffalo mozzarella, crunchy grilled squash, the most crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside baguette, and a crumbly cheesy pecorino dressing. Really perfect for a hot summer day. Also- Brewer's has the most delicious fries. They are always a little on the short end, but they're crispy and served with the most addicting mayo - I think the flavor comes from rosemary garlic. SERVICE: The bartenders are always really quick and dishes/glasses are always cleared away whenever we are finished. The food also comes up incredibly fast even when they're busy. OVERALL: Really great place to go on a casual date, or catch up with friends. Also, on the weekends they are really strict about carding people. Most reviews of The Brewer's Art focus on this as a drinking establishment. I've never been here just for drinks, so my focus is on BA as a restaurant - it does feel quite opulent in comparison to the bar, a very interesting contrast. OK, so I'm actually feeling like a fraud now, as I really can't tell you too much about the menu, even though we've eaten here at least a dozen times. While we lived in Baltimore last summer, the menu was a little limited, with maybe 6 entrees to choose from (including rabbit - poor li'l bunnies), but since then they have a new chef, and a couple of extra entrees (now not including rabbit - hurrah for the now very relieved li'l bunnies). The new menu has some great looking items; Braised Pork Shank, Scallops au Poivre, Resurrection Barbeque Shrimp, Basque Chicken... None of this really matters though. Why? Two words: Steak Frites. Holy crap, their Steak Frites is OUTSTANDING - it's like crack. I'm not exaggerating here, we've been here 12 times, and between Simona and I, we've ordered 24 Steak Frites. And we'll come back here probably every other week or so for the foreseeable future and order more Steak Frites. How do they do it? Who knows. Well, they take a grilled coulotte steak (medium rare for us), serve it with a red wine shallot sauce and they produce something quite outstanding. Not satisfied with giving you something so incredibly delicious, they pair this up with their rosemary garlic fries which are so tasty they should be illegal. I really think there may be some illegal drugs added too, because this dish is seriously addictive - I could have two each visit and not bat an eyelid. What makes it worse though is that it's so good that Simona usually finishes the whole thing, so I can't even have pseudo-seconds. If you've not eaten here yet, go now, and treat yourself with the Steak Frites; not inexpensive at $26, but worth every dollar and then some. The Brewer's Art has been voted one of the top bars nationally, and rightfully so. The Brewer's Art has something for everyone. The warmly-lit upper level, which also includes a dining area, feels classy and bourgeois, while the dimly-lit lower level feels more gritty and down-to-earth. I like how the lower level seating is organized into separate rooms with bench seats, individual tables, and stools. It definitely creates a more cozy and homey atmosphere! Regarding food and drinks of the adult variety, highly recommended are the rosemary garlic fries (delicate and delicious taste, not too oily) and the Resurrection Ale, which is the most popular of their many house brews. I've heard good things about The Brewer's Art since moving to Baltimore, and have been wanting to go there. Unfortunately, the region has been hit with many large snowstorms this year, and usually on the weekend, so my wife and I have not been able (try to find a parking spot downtown on snow emergency routes!). But, this past weekend, it was warm, the snow had [mostly] melted on the streets, and we figured we'd venture out and try the place - glad that I did! First of all, The Brewer's Art is on two floors. The ground (street level) floor hasa the main restaurant. There, you've got a very nice, but small bar, small lounge, and the formal dining area. Downstairs is the larger bar area and casual seating. No reservations in the casual areas. I walked downstairs after dinner to check it out, but it was pretty crowded by then, so did not get any more to drink there. We'll venture back sometime to check out that area, and the casual dining menu. Upstairs, at the bar, my wife and I started off with their Belgian Triple while waiting for a friend to arrive. A very good beer. Later on I had their Ozzy, and my wife got the Resurrection. Both were good. So, all in all, they make a good beer themselves. On top of that, their beer menu of "guest" beers was pretty extensive, with a nice mix of different types of beer. Price for all of them was about average for town. One thing I will say is that their IPA selection was a bit limited - they don't make their own, and only had Dogfish Head 60 and 90 Minute IPA. The 90 is my favorite IPA, so that makes me happy, but I'd love to see them brew their own. I do understand they focus on the Belgian, so it's only a minor complaint. Now, on to dinner. We had reservations for dinner, and I highly recommend them to eat upstairs. Appetizer of shrimp and grits was very good - my wife and I shared that. For the main cours, I had their lamb shank (with pumpkin polenta, pomegranate sauce, and pistachio mint pesto. It was fabulous! My wife really wanted that, too, but since she has a life threatening tree-nut allergy (and the E.R. was no on our list of things to do tonight), the pistaschio and pine-nuts would not have been good for her. Back to the lamb - the meat was cooked to perfection, as the lamb came off the bone with a fork only, and the sauces, while good, did not overpower the meat flavor. Wife got the black cod, which she also enjoyed thoroughly. We each got dessert - cheesecake for me, and a tort of some sort for her. Both were good. Left very satisfied with the meal, and even brought some lamb home in a bag (it will be lunch tomorrow) as the portions were a good size. Definitely recommend Brewer's Art to anyone, though the weekend is a busy time there, so a weekday might be a better night. Enjoy it! read more

Update: Dinner is slow at the BA but wonderfully tasty. The boullabaisse was chock-ful of huge morsels of fish and great mussels. I was impressed with the flavor. Service is slow, like most of Baltimore, but very tasty indeed. Minus one star for the smokefilled haze that leaves you smelling like a chain smoker just for eating dinner. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Brewer's Art gives me hope that I can be happy living in Baltimore. Let me count the ways: 1. They have their own beers. Resurrection (a house brew) is seven percent alcohol. At $2.50 a pint during happy hour (4-7pm weekdays), this is like hitting the motherlode. It even comes in a custom-made BA goblet which looks like a modern king arthur cup. 2. Good for split personalities. I'm talking about the classy upstairs bar and art-filled restaurant and the chill cavernous bar downstairs. It's like heaven and hell, but without being stuck for eternity in either. 3. Food smells awesome. Haven't had a chance to eat it but I know those fries have GOT to be amazing. Just catching a whiff of any dish that passes by is enough. The only downside? Smoking is allowed in Maryland bars at the moment. So you walk out with stinky hair and clothing, a moderate price to pay for a fun evening of good booze. read more

Brewer's is a Baltimore institution of sorts. Most people under 45 have spent many a night hanging out in this multi-level spot. I have taken my parents to the restaurant for dinner when they were in town, and attended other dinner events here as well. The food in the back, or the sit-down restaurant portion of the upper level, is usually very good. Some of the menu items can be tough to pronounce, so unless you appreciate gourmet food, it may not be a good pick. The upstairs bar is beautifully appointed with high ceilings, amazing moldings, fireplaces, and a humongous chandelier that seems to hypnotize me every time I visit the bar without fail. The crowd is a mix of local college students (mostly from MICA), young professionals, and a sprinkling of others. I've noticed there seems to be a theme as far as lesbian and gay nights, but it may totally be a coincidence. The Mt. Vernon neighborhood is known for being gay friendly. The acoustics aren't the best in the upstairs bar, so if you plan on having a serious conversations with your company, this isn't the place to go. The downstairs bar is much cozier and is best described as cave like. There are plenty of nooks and crannies and spots to be romantic or just have great conversation with friends. It's super smoky, but with the impending ban, it won't be a problem much longer. The crowd downstairs seems a bit grubbier, but in a good, interesting way. The bar food tends to be good, but I wish there were more interesting vegetarian/seafood options. Veggie burgers aren't always appetizing. Over the summer there was a grilled calamari salad to die for, so I'm hoping to see that again. The rosemary garlic fries are a necessary evil that many patrons have grown addicted. read more

Yelp, steered me towards this restaurant, and I'm glad it did. It's a really cool space with well executed food. I was under pressure to pick a good spot because a close family friend was driving from DC just to meet me, so I'm really glad Brewer's Art delivered. The server provided a list of beer brewed in house as well as a larger list of domestic and imported beer organized by type. I certainly appreciated that and took advantage of a very light Hefewiezen. For an entree, I ordered a lamb dish with meat that was super tender. It was served almost like a stew or pot roast over some type of carb with a grits/polenta consistency. My friend got the steak frites because that's what's mentioned most on Yelp. It didn't disappoint, and we both agreed it was a great steak. Actually, she felt like it's the best steak she's had in a while. She's been eating a lot of steak lately after almost 15 years of no beef, so I'd say her bar is high. Those fries were on point too. The service here was good but not perfect. I made a reservation through open table and had to adjust it from 7:30 to 8:00. The place had a good crowd in the front room, but had plenty of seating in the second room.I think a Monday night is a great day to go. I'd certainly visit this place again and recommend it to friends. Meets the 3 G standard: good beer, great friends and garlic fries. They have cozy seating all over the place for catching up with friends, but the downstairs "nooks" are particularly intimate. The upstairs has slightly more of a posh feel - my personal favorite are the leather couches and arm chairs. They make me feel like an important bearded old man. For some reason, that is a good feeling. The downstairs has the feel of a cellar/dungeon - lots of exposed brick and dim lighting - if you're into that kind of thing. If you've never been - order real food off the menu one time and never do it again. It's tasty, but more importantly...it is an experience necessary, for you to realize that you just overpaid for good food when all you wanted to eat were their $4 rosemary garlic fries. Stopped by this place with a friend that works in Baltimore. Since I'm moving to Washington Vill...aw hell, PIGTOWN (yeah baby!), I figure I'd get to know what's good. This place? Is good. They've got a great beer list. No, it doesn't have a zillion types. But they don't need 'em. The beer was nice and cold but not freezing; just the way I like it. I tried their special, the Scorpio and really liked it. A friend got a stout that was really tasty too. The good thing about this place? It has an ever-changing list of house beers (with a few die-hards that are always there). The bad thing? They have an ever-changing list of house beers. I'm sad that I won't be able to order a Scorpio now (since it's December the Sagitarrius is in stock.) And I have to wait patiently 'til the beer that sounds really great, the Charm City Sour Cherry, makes it back on the scene. Food-wise? The fries *are* good. Seriously. So is the bar menu mac-n-cheese (SERIOUSLY cheesy, and that's a high compliment from me). I ordered the mussels and requested that they not add the butter...and got my wish. And the sauce was still delicious and totally sop-worthy. I'd give this place five stars but I haven't gone past the bar area, and I haven't actually sat in the dungeon downstairs (though I did check it out on a trip to the ladies; very cool.) Drove up from DC to eat here before a show at the Lyric (if you are also doing this it's very easy to park at the Lyric parking structure and walk over). What a great time we had! Our server was absolutely wonderful and guided us through a fantastic meal. We started with some terrific beers (I had the Twelve Labors) and the Austrian style cheese spread. This spread is enough for 4 people. It's seriously good, too; tangy and pungent in flavor with a little bite from the peppers. When we ran out of things to put it on we were eating it with just a spoon. The crackers it came with were tasty, but didn't really hold up to the spread. They are crumbly and fell apart too easily. The thing to do is to spread it on the bread they bring to the table. Delish! Next we had caesar salad and mussels. The broth from the mussels, rich with tomatoes and fennel, was obscenely good. Great for dipping bread. The caesar salad was also well made. It had actual anchovy filets on it. I love anchovies! I finished my share of it and wanted more. My entree was steak frites. Interesting cut of meat. It was almost pot roast-like. Very tender and cooked and seasoned perfectly. I didn't care for the fries, but I just may not like rosemary fries that much. I wish I had room for dessert, but I did not. My only complaint about this place was the bonehead service in the front bar area. I couldn't even get a drink in there and it was virtually empty. But once we were seated everything was amazing. I would go back and recommend this place to anyone looking for great food & drink in Baltimore. read more

I used to work in Baltimore Maryland as a consultant, and I found this restaurant with the help of my hotel concierge. Everytime someone mentions that they're going to Baltimore, I urge them to stop by this restaurant. If you're staying in Inner Harbor, unsure of how to get here, just hail a cab and boldy tell him, "Brewers Art, please." It's a well known spot, and the cabbies know just where it is. The beer list is extensive, with seasonal brews, microbrews, and an ever-changing variety. The waiters are knowledgable about food selection, beer selection, and the wines; they're polite, responsive, and friendly. I've had the scallops and lamb, both of which were well-prepared and phenominal. A while ago they had a "10 bottles of wine under $10" list, but I don't believe the offer this any more and was primarily the reason I had initially began recommending the restaurant. Most interesting is the downstairs hipster-esque bar, with a speak-easy feeling after being in the upstairs dining room. They play a mix of old school hiphop, rock, and indie music, while serving high-alcohol content brews on tap. Seating is limited downstairs, and it can get a bit noisy and crowded, but after a dinner upstairs, make sure you venture downstairs. I would say this restaurant is a good date-night place, or a great place for a group of friends to unwind after a hard week's worth of work, or celebrate an occasion. The atmosphere is great; its relaxed and loungy but at the same time brings a little class to Baltimore... something the city could use more of!! Easily one of the best dinners I've had all year. I can highly recommend the arctic char, which was cooked to perfection. I loved the lemon sauce and the mushrooms that were a part of the dish, although I wasn't a huge fan of the artichoke hearts (but, then again, I've never been particularly fond of them.) Definitely get dessert!!! My dining partner and I wisely choose the butterscotch pudding, which tasted unlike any butterscotch item I've had before. Basically, it was a million times better than any butterscotch dessert I have ever eaten. Service was great, our waiter was funny and friendly, our water glasses were never close to empty. **Bar only review!** On a quick trip to Baltimore, we came here after talking to a group of folks outside the hippo, they mentioned the scent of rosemary fries would hit you right when you walked in the door. There was a storm rolling in and wind gusts felt as if a frozen hurricane was going on, but we made the trek up the slight hill after popping into Maple for a drink. We walk up to a nondescript building which clearly had tons of people in it and asked the guys standing outside if this was "the brewery place". After a bit of sarcasm, they checked our ID's and let us in. Walking in, it felt as if we were at a house party in some gigantic row home with a built in bar. The bar was packed so we went around the corner and I saw staircase going down to a basement. I asked the hostess about it and he mentioned there was another bar down there and were welcome to see ourselves down. We walk down and it was dark, loud, exactly the opposite of where we were just enjoying a drink at Maple, sitting next to the fire and enjoying each others company. We decided to go back upstairs to find a place to park and enjoy a drink. I had the Ozzy. It was fantastic. If you enjoy Belgian beers, order it. Immediately. I also got a Natty Bo for funz....when in Rome! Brewer's Art seemed like a great place to go for some good beer, good food (from what i smelled and saw on the menu), and hang out with good friends. Amateur hour at the Brewer's Art. A foodie friend of mine and I agreed to go to Brewer's Art for restaurant week since I had never been before. The service was great, beers were okay, and the bread was very good; and that is where the experience took a turn for the worse.There were so many problems with the food tonight. Both of us had the turnip vichyssoise with hazelnuts and hazelnut oil (advertised with truffle oil but there was none to be found) It was served hot (O_o), it was too salty, and the hazelnuts and oil did nothing to enhance the dish. I had scallops with borsch puree, blood oranges and crispy leeks. It tasted mostly good, but my last bite had an off note, like the scallop was starting to go bad. My friend had veal jagerschnitzel which went over pretty well. For dessert we both had the cheese platter. Two large chunks of cheddar-ish cheese. One plain and one with herbs. The cheeses both sharp, did not pair well and seemed like an afterthought. My friend, who had been to the Brewer's Art multiple times claimed that it had been a much better experience in the past. read more

This place is 50% of the reason why I moved to Baltimore from D.C. I went on a date here and fell completely in love with the atmosphere, beer and food. The trifecta of my local hangout perfection happened in one fateful evening and I vowed never to break up with it. As for the date, well, that's curtains, but at least I got to keep Brewers Art. Resurrection is my favorite beer here, but I can honestly say that I have never tried a beer that I didn't like. But Rezzy (as I so affectionately call it) has my heart. If you like beer - particularly Belgian beer - you'll want to make sure you make a pit stop here. I mean, who doesn't want to stop into a place that serves its' draft beer out of taps that feature Jesus, Ozzy's Fingers and a Pitchfork (By the way, the taps are made by the Brewer!)?? The atmosphere at The Brewers Art is quite varied depending what floor you're on. The upstairs is classy and really gives a more fine dining experience. I personally enjoy the downstairs, which reminds me a bit of what a speakeasy would be like during prohibition. Well, kind of. The downstairs bar is loud, very dark, and always packed. I've met some wonderful people there; many of which I am lucky enough to even call friends. Let's talk about the food now. YUMMO! Chef Duff is a master of palate pleasures! You will never be bored, as the menu features several different tastes and many food fusions that promise to leave you wanting more. Did I mention that the menu also changes frequently (as does the beer selection)?! One of my favorite seasonal items on the menu is the Croque Monsiuer, which is a Ham Sandwich with Bechamel Sauce and heaps of Gruyere cheese that is then baked. Again, YUMMO! Came here on a Friday night for some beers. Tried the "Ozzy" beer, it was tasty and did a number on me (7%, I think). Becareful of this one! The house brews are tasty and I don't think any of them are over $4.50. The place gets a bit crowded but my friends and I were still able to find some seats at the bar. There are some rather comfy leather couches situated throughout the first floor. The downstairs area reminded me of a gothic cove. It's dimly lit and we all know the equation: dim lights + tastey beer = beer goggles. Careful kids. This place isn't for the weak. P.S. This is completely irrelavant but one of the bouncers has this cool flashlight that looks like a bird and when he clicks on it the beak opens and the light turns on! Yeap! Beer doesn't get any better than what The Brewer's Art brews! They always keep things interesting with their draft selections and their happy hour offerings are tough to beat. Seriously, the beer here is quality and super fairly-priced. Equally on par with the beer is the service. I have been to The Brewer's Art a handful of times and have always found myself engaged in a conversation with the staff there that goes beyond the "May I please have the..." dialogue. They are very knowledgeable about the beer they brew and are always more than willing to steer you in the right beer direction based off of your tastes and preferences. There is an upstairs and a downstairs, each has its own distinct vibe. The darker and, some would argue, more "hipster" downstairs gets pretty crowded on a weekend night and really livens the joint up. What is really nice about this place is that it never gets infested with rambunctious tank-top and sunglass-wearing bros. This place attracts a great mix of people. You can order food both upstairs and downstairs, though the upstairs is more of a "formal" setting compared to the downstairs. The food at the Brewer's Art is definitely above-par for bar food and I even know some people who are not beer drinkers but actually opt for the Brewer's Art for their dining. Their rosemary parmesan fries are infamous. Give me some of them fries and a draft (or 4...I'm currently addicted to the peppercorn brewski they have on draft) and I'm more than good to go...or stay, rather. This place is great for meet-ups with friends and family and just for an overall pretty casual and fun time in an awesome atmosphere. Go to the Brewer's Art for the best beer in Bmore! P.S. I used to frequent Brewers Art all the time when I lived in Mt. Vernon. Their happy hour can't be beat; $3.50 for a house brew? Yes please, I'll take 7. Ozzy and Resurrection are my favorites, mainly because I prefer beers that pack a bit of a punch and these both fit the bill. Yet somehow neither are overwhelming in taste and they go down easy which makes them terribly dangerous. The only downside is that it does get packed and quite loud. There's not too much seating to be had so make sure you're okay with the prospect of standing around for awhile. The clientele leans to the conservative side and it can turn into a sea of khakis and ties so it wouldn't be my top spot for scoping out fellas but it's a nice place to meet friends for a drink after work. read more

We had a great experience from beginning to end. I chose Brewer's Art to celebrate a friend landing an awesome job because she said she wanted somewhere we could enjoy some wine and seafood, especially scallops. Brewer's Art impressed on all levels. They had a scallop entree that was incredible and satisfied her discerning tastes. They had another seafood entree but details elude me. The waiter was phenomenal, warm, friendly, knowledgable with the often difficult-to-find awareness of when we wanted to chat and when he should just quietly fill our waters. The wine list was great, offering a totally satisfying bottle and glass selections at varied price points. After dinner we went for beers downstairs in their awesome bar. It feels like we're in a wine cellar somewhere in France...not that I've been but it's what I imagine. To completely tie off the great experience, when we finally left we were in beautiful Mt. Vernon with all the atmosphere and after dinner activity options that the neighborhood offers. Both of us are definitely looking forward to returning! read more

Gotta come here for the happy hour. This is a cool place to come and grab a drink and some food after a long day or just to hang out with some friends. I ordered the turkey melt at the bar and also had the Resurrection. Both were delicious! But if it's your first time coming here, be on the lookout for it, it is really easy to miss this place! read more

I usually come here every time I visit my family on the East coast, it makes for a great place to get together with my friends from high school that still live in the area. More importantly they brew some fantastic beer, my favorite being "Iron Maiden," a tasty and dark brew with a very high alcohol percentage. More bang for the buck, and really who can resist a beer named after one of the greatest heavy metal bands in history. Be sure to pay attention to the puller for the tap at the bar, good stuff! I haven't eaten here and only spent a few minutes upstairs at the bar so I can't really comment on that aspect however the downstairs is a great dungeon like space perfect for sipping your favorite brew or cocktail. Though it can get crowded so you may want to arrive early for choice seating. read more

My favorite place in Baltimore. It's my ideal type of bar. Dark and Cellar-ish. Amazing beer, I recommend Ozzy and the regionally famous Resurrection. The food isn't bad either, basically bar food but some of it with a bit of a good twist. The rosemary fries are the tits. I could spend years hanging out in this place. Not real big and you can wear whatever the hell you want. Also has a more gourmet upstairs restaurant, but I don't think they would let me in, so I haven't been. And no egos from the bartenders. Brewer's Art - N. Charles St. - Baltimore Terrific beer! Downstairs bar is cool if you're drinking the day away. It is very very dark. However, it is better than the top bar/restaurant because the a-hole bartender works up there... One of the bartenders - white guy, short(er) hair is a TOTAL a-hole. Horrible experience trying to order food at the bar once. So happy until interacting with him. Have been back twice since and got a miserable vibe from him. Total d-bag. One of the best combinations of food and beer in Baltimore. Been here numerous times and I've never once been disappointed.

First off, I should mention that I don't like beer. I don't like beer, and what I really, realllllly wanted to try at Brewer's Art was the famously delicious dinner menu I've been hearing about for about a zillion years. That said, the circumstances of a recent day threw me into the beer end of the pool, so I guess I'll just taste the dinner another time. Here's the weird thing: I liked the beer. My pal, Erin, bought me a huge vat of the house Resurrection brew. It tickled my nose. It reminded me of gingerbread in a strange, faraway way. Another review form a tourist who only came once on a Thursday or Friday night. It was that long ago, yet I had to review it because it's worth a review. I love going to places where it's hard to spot, and this one, from the outside, looked like any other building on that block. But the atmosphere almost feels like your rich friend's home, if he had a bar. Everyone is friendly, great beer. Brewer's Art is a freaking treasure... I absolutely love this place! The main theme about this place seems to center around the fact that they have fantastic options in the beer department. Brewer's Art feels as if it's a hybrid brewery hybrid bar and hybrid lounge. Upon entering, you'll always be greeted by really kind folks, who seem to really work at explaining everything the place has to offer. The bar is stocked, the food tastes amazing, and the atmosphere is ON POINT. I've been here several times, and I can't recall a bad moment here. Most recently, I was rewarded with half a foot of snow that cancelled work. Why was this rewarding? Because Brewer's Art was open. I also had what might possibly be the best beer I have ever had a glass of (and than another and another): Brewer's Art Green Peppercorn Tripel. Brewed in house! It pours light golden, cloudy color. Mild peppercorn and spice aroma. Very above average mouth feel. The peppercorn is the star, but it is so drinkable, and well supported by the yeast and malting. I easily finished the bomber. I feel this place was special and earned an excellent rating. Visited here while in town for an interview. Hope to come back soon. Ambiance: Overall style is a mix of modernly refurbished historic Baltimore home (with some cool art paintings) meets farm-chic; very clean with lots of wood elements which makes for an inviting and comfy place you could meet friends and have drinks and snacks or a great meal. Sort of has 3 different areas: 1. the casual front bar, which is perfect for me, 2. the back dining room which seemed great for date night, and 3. the basement bar which I didn't venture to but was described as "divey" by my bar neighbor to the right. Bathrooms were clean and individual unisex in the back. Beers: Known for their "Resurrection", their beers are mostly Belgian-inspired styles (my favorite, which biases me more). Had 6 samples (all 6 of their own beers on tap) in a flight. My favorite was "Sangreal" due to being closer to style of Belgian Abbey/Dubbel, though all were excellent beers. Actually one I highly recommend is "21", a rye beer (their "7") aged briefly in rye barrels to impart a subtle hint of whiskey (not the punch in the face that everyone is used to with this style). Food: I was here for some bar food, but if the rest of the menu is like what I had, I need to try it all. Mac n cheese in a skillet was everything I hoped it could be, with delicious breeding baked to a divine cheesy crunchiness. The mussels were delicious and came with nearly a loaf of toasted sourdough, which was handy because the sauce was worth every dippable bite. Service: Perfect - very friendly and attentive but not in your business. Knowledgeable when I had questions. Overall: Definitely will be back the next time I'm in Baltimore. Highly recommend for both casual grabbing a beer or date night. This place is awesome! read more

First review - (See below for an amendment to the first review): Gosh, I really want to like the Brewer's Art. I do. Upstairs has a really nice front bar area which leads into a chic seated restaurant. Downstairs is very grotto-like with the exposed brick walls and tiny alcove booths (the perfect location to steal-away to with a romantic date.) The food is usually delicious. The mac & cheese might actually have addictive components... can't be sure yet. The only reason I give it two stars instead of five stars is the staff. I'm used to dealing with divas all day everyday. But, the staff (especially the bartenders) take snarky to a whole new level. For all of the wonderful things Brewer's Art has going on - I just cannot get past the snark. Meh. Updated: I just received a personal message from Tom, the owner of Brewer's Art, who wrote that he read my review here and had just had a meeting with the bar staff to let them know to ease up on the dour attitudes. It's really been interesting to have seen Brewer's Art evolve over the past 10 or so years. It is not the bar it used to be. And maybe that's a good thing. And maybe it's not such a good thing. It used to be that it seemed like a little bit of a well-kept secret--especially the downstairs--but it's changed a lot in recent years. Or at least I've noticed a pretty interesting shift; mostly in clientele. Used to be a lot more low key downstairs, but the times I've been back recently (as in the past 3 years until the present) it's kind of gotten a little bit of a frat boy vibe. It's wicked loud and usually filled with bros pounding some high octane brews. I've also been disappointed with the upstairs bartenders, who throw off more than a little attitude and affect an air of aloofness that has led them to screw up mixed drink orders on more than one occasion. In short, I'll go to Brewer's every now and then these days, but it's definitely not the place it used to be, which is why I never really go out of my way for it. read more

Restaurant Food: Steak Frites - steak was cooked just as I asked for, very generous proportion, tender and flavorful. Rosemary Garlic fries are small and on the softer side which I usually don't like as much but the taste is amazing and makes up for it. Atmosphere: Feels like I am in a fancy dining table at home. Feels very comfortable, lights perfectly dim, it is noisy but not obnoxious. Everyone who helped us were very nice. Good for couples or a night out with a good friend. Other tidbits: I made a reservation a week in advance to get a table for 2 at a good time (7:00pm). Times seemed to fill pretty quickly. Grab a drink at the bar if you get there early! Bar I am pleasantly happy with my bar experiences. For my last visit, we went on a Monday (New Years Eve) and they had happy hour from 5pm throughout the whole night. The downstairs cave is cool but very loud and crowded. The upstairs is more elegantly decorated and was less crowded when we first got there. We managed to grab seats despite the spurts of crowds coming in and out. Bartenders were very chill, House beers (Ozzy and Sublimation) were excellent. read more

I can't say enough about this place. Lately, it seems...not a weekend goes by without at least one stop in. A couple thoughts...the burger has put an end to my not eating red meat streak of 10 years, the Resurrection Ale can indeed bring even the most drab person back to life, and the catacombs of downstairs remind me of being back in Medieval times, relaxing after a jousting match (although you may need night vision, or be part owl to see down there). Bottom line is...exceptional beer, food and service. Don't think twice about going there. It's one of the coolest spots in Baltimore! read more

I been here on three different occasions with my fiancé, who introduced me to the steak frites and my oh my..... I must say it is now one of my favorite steak meals. I normally get it medium and its so delicious, tender, and juicy! The rosemary garlic fries compliment the steak as well as the small side of balsamic lettuce".
