Cool place adjacent to Lucky Cat Records. Overall this location is a bit dark, but I like the setup with a horseshoe bar. We came in to have a couple beers after record shopping. I have not eaten at the Bulldog since the location in NE shut down. The menu still looks pretty solid. I wish they would bring back the steak tartare....that was amazing back in the day. The staff was friendly, and the service was relatively prompt, although I thought they looked a little understaffed. Overall, the beer selection had a little of everything, but nothing that would say wow. I will come back and see if the wings are as good as I remembered them from the other location. read more

Bar atmosphere with mediocre service. A good place to hang out and possibly throw darts, but not the best option around if you're looking for an above-average meal. We tried the Dry Rubbed Wings with Thai Chili. They were unique, but nothing special. We actually ordered 12 but only got 6 (service wasn't great as I mentioned), although in hindsight maybe that wasn't a bad thing since they weren't much of a hit anyway. The Seattle Dog was up next. This is a $5 dog being priced at $9, as the hot dog itself was fairly small, it was definitely not "stuffed" with cream cheese, and there was not a note of exceptional to it. I have been here a couple of times now and can officially declare that The Bulldog Uptown is a hidden gem. The street parking directly in front is limited, but there is plenty of street parking to be found a block or two away. It seems that they always have plenty of drink specials at any given time, and it is all priced rather reasonably. They have an outdoor, fenced-in patio that is not dog-friendly, and it can tend to be rather smokey, so if you aren't a fan of cigs, I would sit inside. The inside is kind of dark, but I would say that it definitely matches the vibe of the place, and it would be probably be weird if it was super bright. Also, every time I have come here, it is bar service only, and you just go up and order everything there and then grab it when it's done. I don't mind, but if you are looking to be waited on, this might not be the spot for you. No complaints as far as the food goes, and I will be coming back soon. read more

It is shameful how much I like this place. It is an understated, neighborhood spot that sits squarely in the local, almost dive-bar genre. The combination of pretty stiff drinks, weekday beer specials and the consistently available $9 Beer and Jameson bump (shot) are superseded only by the Happy Hour deals (M-F, 3p-6p and M-Th, 11p-1p; 1/2 off taps, wines, wells and apps), pretty awesome pub style food, and Wednesday evening Wingo (whiskey bingo)! Walking in always gives me pause because of the combination of day drinkers, tattoo heavies, and misfits gathered around which I don't feel a strong sense of identity with. However, I love that everyone in the place is always lively and having a good time and I always feel welcome as does everyone I see that walks in. The rotating taps are great but what I really like here are some of the menu items. The kitchen does well in the area of the fried food arts. Pickles, chicken strips, cheese curds and wings are all solid choices made even better during happy hour pricing but the real guilty pleasure for me are the Tater Tots. I really try to adhere to low carb foods but the damn Tots here are my downfall. You can get them plain but a pro-tip is to spring for the extra buck and they will season them with garlic, sriracha or truffled salt. Well worth it as a guilty pleasure. The burger choices, sandwiches and other pub like food selections are solid and I haven't eaten anything here that has led to regret. We got here for a bite when they just opened. Kitchen was ready. Bartender doubled as server - prompt, friendly, knowledgeable. I ordered the French dip, no onions. It was excellent! Fresh bun, grilled. Beef also grilled nicely w melted cheese - brought out hot. Homemade chips were awesome. Partner ordered chili, which she says is good. A jalapeño would be good with it. She liked the chips and when our server checked in with us we asked how much a side of chips cost. She said, " I'll just bring you some." Lemonade tasted fresh squeezed, Bloody Mary was good. I've been here a million times, and they have possibly the best deal on happy hour food in the city. It's half off appetizers, and unlike most places, the apps here are actual meal size. You can get a plate of good wings for cheap. My kids like the chicken tenders, quesadillas and cheese curds, and I love the poutine. Plus, you can sit on either the outer patio, or an inner patio, and they always have specials on beers as well. It's nice to have places that specialize in something, makes them distinct, and this bar specializes in Belgian beers. I don't usually get them, but I appreciate the effort. A good friend of mine took me to this place a while back, and it's become a favorite of mine. They've got good drink options, good food, and fairly good service! It's an overall fun place to dine. My favorite aspect of The Bulldog is their food. I've dined in a couple of times, and I have ordered take out too. Dining in or taking out, the quality of the food is consistently tasty. I usually get their Bulldog Wings, dry rubbed with thai chili sauce, and their hand-cut fries with the truffle oil. I ask for this spicy mayo sauce on the side! It really adds a punch of flavor to your meal. They have a wide selection of beer and drinks too, but I usually love their ciders! The times I've dined in, the service was good but a bit slow. They were very friendly had decent attitudes. I enjoy the decor of the bar too, very spunky! In the back of the bar, hidden away in a corner, they have a statue of a smily bulldog in a cage. My friend and I thought it was real for a split second. It was a good laugh! Maybe because The Mud Pie was a fav of ours back in the day, I like the well worn, casual, cozy vibe of what is now The Bulldog Uptown. Brings back fond memories. Met a few friends here the other night for dinner. We were seated in the lower level, which apparently some object to. Worked fine for us. Might have helped that it was a blustery, cold winters eve and the setting felt warm and enveloping. In fairness, I could see the space as less appealing on a beautiful summer night. Anyway, our server was johnny-on-the-spot and we started with cheese curds and Reaper Wings. The curds were State Fair worthy. The wings, as previously observed in my review of the St. Paul Bulldog were not to be feared. They were tasty but lacked any real punch. For dinner, I went with the Cajun Chicken-Wich. Moist, tender, nicely grilled chicken breast with a moderately spicy kick. Other sandwiches looked great and were quickly dispatched. A solid, no nonsense pub with very good food and a welcoming atmosphere. Parking can get a bit dicey at times but patience is usually rewarded. read more

As I entered The Bulldog for the first time yesterday afternoon my ears were greeted to blasting Metallica. So far, so good. The music just kept getting better: Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Faith No More. Seriously, FNM? This girl was in heaven and she had not even ordered a drink yet. It is larger inside than I anticipated from the outside. It is quite dark inside which was a nice change from being at the pool all day in the blazing sun. My sunburnt ass needed a drink so I ordered the usual Long Island. At only $6.75 it was a tasty delight and the server was a doll of a gal that kept checking in with us at an appropriate pace. I hate to be asked how my meal is every 2 seconds and I hate to be looked over even more. She was just right. I failed to ask her name. My apologies. Husband was impressed with their beer selection and ordered 2 local ones that he had never tried. I did not ask the names of them as I was too anxious to start eating the poutine that we had ordered. Happy hour is every day from 3 - 6. I frown upon places that only offer HH Monday - Friday. That does not always work for folks with demanding work hours. HH seven days a week should be a requirement. All apps are 50% off during HH so we ordered the pot roast poutine (normally $12.50) and the bacon jalapeño cheese curds (normally $12.00). Both were amazing but I do not feel they were worth the full price. Go during HH and make a better financial decision. That being said, that pot roast poutine is the bomb! I reside in Eden Prairie but may make the trip into "the city" weekly to eat that plate of tastiness. During HH of course. Tender pot roast, tons of gravy and Ellsworth cheese curds made it all worth the calories. But who is counting calories when they eat poutine? Not this girl! The bacon jalapeno curds were honestly some of the best I have ever had. And I am normally a die hard MN State Fair cheese curd girl. Served with ranch dressing and loaded with Ellsworth curds, I may never fit into my skinny girl jeans again. And that is okay. They had 2 dart boards that were both being used. We sat in the lower section and right away before we could look at the menu some dark haired girl came over asking what we wanted. They're getting a little too close to the CC club and further away from their other locations that a decade ago seemed comfortable, and now seems too divey. This is a good place to go for a quick bite. The food is nothing exceptional but there are a lot of options and it is very tasty. It is very worth every dollar you spend (and it's really not expensive - a burger is roughly 10.50). The fries are tasty and crispy. The burger patties are big. And they have some unique burger options and hot dogs. Definitely try the pulled pork and the porky pig burger - the pulled pork is delicious here and sweet! The atmosphere is really cool inside. It's dark and grungy with low ceilings. You don't feel like you're in Uptown - it feels like you're in a biker bar in the middle of the state. The staff are very nice. Most recently, I stopped here with friends during pride weekend and there was hardly anyone else there, yet service was AWFUL. So slow. We never had a chance to order any more drinks. Took 45 minutes after we were done eating to get our bills, some of which were wrong. We chose to settle the $$ on our end via Venmo so we could just pay and leave finally. OK, this is a little tainted because I love the Bulldog in Northeast so much that it affects my review of this original version of the newer Northeast eatery. One of the things I like about the Northeast place is how open and bright it is with such a large bar and open room...the uptown one is not so much like that. The burger I had was very good but the room is smaller, darker, less inviting and even has some of those expected dive bar smells. The burger was good but not as good as what I have had at the other place. Glad I went and the burgers are good but I'll go for the more open area next time. The original Bulldog in Uptown (same owner as the one in Lowertown) is my favorite of the 3 bars with the same name in the Cities. While it has pretty much the same menu, same tap list and sometimes even the same waitstaff as the Lowertown Bulldog, the Uptown location has a much more relaxed and homey feel to it. Don't get me wrong though, they have one of the best beer selections in the area and it's still Uptown so it does get busy. They also have a cozy patio for the 1/4 of the year we get to enjoy such pleasures in MN. The burgers (especially the Stilton and Bison) are solid, I loves me some tater tots and most of the sandwiches are usually on par with or better than most standard pub fare - all coupled with a great tap beer selection rivaled by only a few bars in the Twin Cities. read more

Stopped at Bulldog Uptown for a Sunday Funday lunch/dinner. Our party of four walked in around 5 pm and had no problem finding a table. Due to rain we had to sit inside although the patio looked nice. Kind of a dark and divey atmosphere inside, but I like that. A server came over promptly and dropped off menus and took our drink orders. Nice beer selection. Didn't take long to bring back our drinks. We started off with an order of the Ellsworth cheese curds. These were the perfect cheese curds. Good size curds and fried perfectly. Solid replacement for the state fair...Two members of our group ordered the Patty Melt which looked very tasty. I ordered the Steakhouse burger. Burgers were all cooked perfectly to medium. The hand cut fries were fresh and crispy. Very tasty. Steakhouse burger had good bleu cheese topping and the horseradish sauce was a nice addition. This place is worth a stop. So I flew to MN to help my friend unpack a storage shed full of his sh*t and drive it from Minneapolis back home to San Diego. During the trip we'd cross five states I'd never been to so to broaden my palette and expand my food horizons, I decided to turn it into my Culinary Tour of Middle America. Over the next few reviews I will discuss my greatest hits and worst misses, and hopefully paint of picture of what I experienced in the excursion. Follow along with me now, won't you? First stop, en route to the house from Minneapolis/St Paul airport was The Bulldog, and my first impression was pleasantly surprising. Your typical hipster neighborhood hole, drinks were poured stiff, much like they are at Cherry Bomb, jukebox was good and punky, and call me shallow but the girls were far more attractive than I anticipated! After a couple of Jamesons I was introduced to Grain Belt beer, which is the local piss pilsner du jour. Think PBR but not as hip, way warmer and with far less bubbles. Does that paint the picture yet? It was fucking flat like a pint of kool-aid with no sugar and no kool-aid packet. Midwestern pisswater, but its tradition, they've been around for 150 years or something and it chased down shots like anything else, so what the hell. Food was decent, I really wanted a good bratwurst while I was there, and my buddy pushed the cheese curds on me, which were awe-inspiring. Similar to mozzarella sticks, but smaller, with better texture and lighter than the bowling alley staples we've come to tolerate. The brat was OK, but I've made better at home, and had a more delish sausage in Chicago. Fuck it, I got what I came for, and I was ready to embark upon the Midwest. All in all, good start for my first night in Minne, except for on the way to his parents' house, my boy getting pulled over and hauled off for a DUI, leaving me to get a ride to the 'burbs from the pigs. On the bright side, I knew nobody in the entire state, and got to stay in the lovely Executive Suites in Woodbury, MN. Regardless, my night was infinitely better than my friends. read more

I like this Bulldog location - it has a more cozy neighborhood feel vs the other ones. It's smaller, feels a little older, but still has spots to sit at in the bar area plus a lower level dining area. The service is pretty quick and they have a similar beer list and the same menu as the other places. There is a small patio for the warmer months. The food is your burger/dog/sandwich type. There are a few TVs to watch sports. read more
