Wandered into the Cavalier after a "treat yoself" day involving spa time @ Burke Williams and a little retail therapy @ Westfield's around the corner. What a great decision! With its British influenced menu (all the goodness of fish n chips, steak tartare / frites / etc), this spot offers a relaxing happy hour 4-6 with tasty bites and friendly service. The photos say it all - great, classic flavors with a twist - using high quality ingredients. The lamb ribs were falling off the bone, the salad greens so crunchy you know they were well hydrated, lovely balance of acid and fat, salt, etc. across for someone like me who enjoys savory delights. Over the past few years, the SF dining scene has changed a lot, with a surge of gentrified, "reinvented" cuisine that costs $$$ but requires a supplementary slice of pizza afterwards. The pessimistic, jaded Yelper in me arrived at The Cavalier with no expectations. At face value, The Cavalier seems like a typical upscale restaurant in the Soma: the interior is classy with tall ceilings, marble, and dark moody lighting. The menu looked quite standard, with a mostly classic selection of smaller and larger plates encompassing various proteins. The Cavalier actually blew me away and restored my faith in SF restaurants. My friends I were here for dinner here before a show at The Warfield nearby. Because we needed our scream voices and dance energy for the concert, we ordered light (some of us got a starter in place of an entree, and I shared a steak with a side of broccoli with my friend). The servers didn't seem to mind at all, and they were extremely attentive and polite throughout the evening. **The ribeye steak was delicious: cooked perfectly medium rare, very juicy and tender, and red wine porcini au jus was the chef's kiss. I paired with a glass of cab, and it was heavenly. **The accompanying "beef fat fries" sounds gluttonous by description, but it tasted like an extra crispy version. The servers kindly made our order of steak frites easy to share, cutting the steak in half and providing us additional plates (and individual fancy steak knives). **The broccolini was excellent too, seared to a nice crisp on the ends and garnished with a topping of herbed breadcrumbs. From browsing the menu, the wild mushroom & ricotta tart, fish & chips with peas, and herb crusted caught my eye. I would order those on my next visit. Other tips and comments: - Reservations were easy. The staff were able to accommodate our party size increase, and we were seated at a cute little circular booth. It was quiet at first, but the place filled up quickly on a Thursday evening - Complimentary bread would have been nice to nom on, but I feel like most SF places don't offer this anymore - All the food arrived in a timely manner. I appreciate efficient dining - Prices are fair, especially considering the quality and memorable ambiance - It's located inside Hotel Zetta. S&R Lounge, a bright and welcoming hotel lobby bar, is located adjacent and serves the same cocktails. (I tried the Angel of the North; I couldn't really taste the earl grey, but the simultaneously smokey and fruity Glenlivet-Amaro blend was on point) read more

She was delightful when she did come by to take our order or to check on us but it felt like the other tables in her section were given more consistent attention than we did. Really great place walking distance from the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. Very cool British inspired menu and ambiance. We all got the deviled eggs and Brussel sprouts and they were both divine. Deviled eggs might have been the best I've ever had. Lobster bisque was first rate too. For the main, I got the Skuna Bay salmon and prawns. Was absolutely delish. Coworkers got the fish and chips and burger. Burger was also good but the fish and chips were a tad bland. Desert was the buggers disappointment with the Raspberry Trifle. It wasn't. Lose to a trifle, had no actual full sized fruit in it and just tasted off. Otherwise I was super happy with the food. Service was first rate as well. Recommend for sure. Just stay away from that particular desert and be more adventurous on the menu then the fish and chips. read more

Came here last night to celebrate my husband's birthday along with a few friends. It was our first time here and we were surprised by the interior. The Cavalier felt very sophisticated and kind of 'fancy' inside--which I loved. There weren't very many people on a Saturday night, many tables were empty. This was great because it didn't feel too loud or congested. We shared the follow appetizers: Onion rings 4/5 Deviled Eggs 3/5 Grilled Octopus 3.5/5 Brussels Sprout Chips 3.5/5 For my entree I had the fish and chips which was delicious. It came with 3 good-sized golden pieces of fish fried in a light and crispy batter. The fries were amazing because it was the right size and had a good crispy crunch. I had to stop myself from devouring them all. I also enjoyed the little salad that the dish came with. However I wish it came with tartar sauce though, but our waitress kindly brought me a side of aioli sauce. My husband had his favorite Marlowe Burger and liked it. (He wished he had gotten the double though.) Service was great and attentive. There was a small hiccup with having to wait for our cocktails--some came quickly while others took awhile, but our waitress kindly came by to let us know they were short staffed tonight and gave us 2 cocktails on the house. Walked to the Cavalier from the intercontinental Hotel and had a great meal. The fish and chips and the burger were excellent as were the appetizers (Deviled egg and Hamachi Crudo). The bread pudding dessert topped off everything perfectly. Our server Christopher was top-notch, very attentive and knowledgeable. The other wait staff and bar staff also did a great job. Google and Yelp had the wrong open times for Saturdays. and when I spoke to someone last weekend (had a craving for their fish and chips), he told me they opened at 4pm. I was out running errands and it was 4:25pm so decided to stop and get take-out. The kitchen wasn't open till 5pm... but the bartender convinced them to make the order for me. It looks like a take away dish from some Mediterranean restaurant not a $45 rack of lamb dish I would expect from an English restaurant. Drinks were good too. Came here for brunch and a happy hour (separate occasions!) Got to try out a bunch of cocktails - each were delicious, my favorite being the Karma Chameleon and the White Lady. They also had small bites available like french fries, BLT deviled eggs, chicken tenders, and steak tartare. Way better than your run-of-the-mill hotel restaurant. The British pub ambiance is welcoming and there's a real warmth to this cozy restaurant in the Hotel Zetta. Had a few breakfasts and a dinner here during my stay and it was consistently good. The filet and french fries were pretty delish. The potatoes were tasty and the meat was well-cooked and tender. Bonus points for the lovely sauce as well. What I really loved about this place was the breakfast. I opted for the usual bacon, eggs and toast in the morning and it was divine. I realized beyond the delicious bacon, I also LOVED LOVED LOVED the awesome jam that paired perfectly with the well-toasted bread. I found myself craving it in the mornings. My only regret is I forgot to ask if they sold the jam as a standalone that I could have brought back to NY lol. The service was good and their coffee was also dependable. Another bonus - I was horribly sick during my work trip and this place was a lifesaver b/c the food was so good, it actually helped resurrect my appetite again. God bless tasty breakfasts that allowed me to eat solid foods again! Overall this place is great. It gets crowded at night so keep that in mind. The good thing is you can still order from them menu at the hotel bar and lobby, so that's an option to consider if it gets too packed. read more

My husband and I dined at The Cavalier when trying to decide on a restaurant for our wedding reception. When I made the reservation, I included a note to share why we were dining there and asked if viewing one of the private spaces would be possible. We arrived for dinner a few minutes early and were greeted but asked to wait for the hostess to be seated. I was excited to sit in the main dining room to get a feel for the restaurant. There were plenty of empty tables. The hostess sat us at a round table near the bar area instead--a small table, awkward for two people to have dinner and appetizers on, plus drinks. The service was steady; nothing to boast about. It was fun to watch the bartender painstakingly measure each drink. I liked the ambiance; very nicely decorated. The food was okay; I enjoyed the pork chops, fries were yummy. Deviled eggs are just one egg cut in half for $4. Not in a hurry to return, and I probably wouldn't recommend it. The staff became less interested in us as the evening continued and more so after we paid. I then lost interest in viewing the private dining space and never brought it up. read more

I was planning a San Francisco birthday celebration for my partner who loves sticky toffee pudding, so I was really happy when I saw that The Cavalier serves it on the dessert menu! We got the onion rings as an appetizer, I got the herb marinated pork chop, and my partner got the Marlowe burger. We both loved the flavor and quality of our food and appreciated the big portions. I got the non-alcoholic Bobby Socks to drink, my partner got the Pimms Cup. Both good! Yes, the food was great. But I think we will both remember the swanky, British-inspired decor, and most notably, our server, Brage. We had reservations at Marianne's 1.5 hours after our dinner reservation time. When I realized we wouldn't make it to the original reservation time if we wanted to have dessert, Brage calmly and confidently said it wasn't a problem and he would make sure we were able to enter Marianne's past our reservation time. We had no worries for the evening, which was a great feeling, and it was thanks to him. Very impressed by his service! Look forward to returning soon! read more

We went here for our anniversary dinner a few nights ago and it was GREAT! Every item we ordered was amazing from our starters through dessert. We had the oysters to start, the Cavalier salad, steak frites, and pork belly for dinner and the raspberry trifle for dessert. The service was fantastic - everyone was so nice. I came to The Cavalier for breakfast today before catching a flight. I like that it's conveniently located close to Union Square but on a side street that makes it less crowded. The airy dining room has two halves with different vibes, with the one on the left having a more classic look and the right half being more modern. I ordered the Two Hen Eggs plate, with scrambled eggs, along with the earl grey scones. The eggs were nice and fluffy atop the sourdough bread, and the scones came with a clotted cream and elderflower jelly, which was an inventive twist on regular scones. I appreciated that they bring hot tea served in an actual tea pot for you to steep. This was a great and well-priced breakfast for the area, and I'll likely return in the future! read more

Let me just start by saying: if you haven't eaten here, you haven't lived. It's been a long time that a restaurant has blown me away.. It's obvious that the chefs blend talent together with quality. I can't even explain how every ingredient balances each other out so well to create truly amazing dishes. It's not just one good dish either. Literally every dish was sooo was DELICIOUS! Monica made our experience even better! She was so friendly, offered such good recommendations and really made us feel special :) The GM, Andrew, stopped by our table as well.. such good conversation too. Not just the typical "how is your meal?" type of chit chat. I'm not sure if it's because we came on a Thursday that we were seated so quickly, but I anticipate The Cavalier being fully booked or with lines around the block soon. Best. Dinner. Ever. This was our first dinner inside a restaurant in a long time and we really picked the best place! This was also our first time out in San Francisco since our collective birthdays and anniversary last week as well and it was awesome. We started with cocktails, of course, and both were super yummy. For starters we got the brussel sprout chips, deviled eggs and steak tartare, and finished our meal with the pork chop and beef fat fries all of which were amazing (best tartare, ever)! We washed all that down with a bottle of vermentino we brought with us. The dinner was ridiculously good but what made it even more special was the level of service we received which was spectacular! The night was EPIC! Our server Ruoy was extremely attentive, knowledgeable and friendly from the beginning of our meal all the way to the end. He really made the night special. We learned that it was just his birthday too, so when it was time for dessert we ordered an extra. And with the awesome help from Andrew the general manager, we were able to surprise our server too with a candle in his. Such a great end to an amazing evening! Pictured here was the yummiest tcho chocolate mousse! Everything was so good we forgot to take pictures until the very end. The Cavalier is a nice restaurant, but the food was disappointing. The space and the service were top notch. I've never had my water refilled so quickly. However, the food was disappointing. We had the gnocchi and scallops. The scallops were good. Not amazing or especially noteworthy, but they were good and a good portion. I also had the horseradish mashed potatoes, which were amazing. If you like horseradish, which I do, definitely get these. They came out cold, but the flavor was amazing. The gnocchi was awful. We ended up not even eating it. It was roasted, which made it dry and some of them downright burnt. I've never seen someone roast a gnocchi. No sauce or anything. Do not get the gnocchi. Dry, roasted pasta is not a thing people want to eat. The server was very attentive and noticed we didn't like the gnocchi so offered to take it off the bill even though we didn't complain or ask them to. Again, excellent service. I would give this place another try, but would order differently. read more

I came here for a corporate dinner and it was an amazing atmosphere (albeit the lights were just a bit too dim for me) and the service was great too. For a drink, I devoured my Pimm's Cup cocktail. Yum! We also shared the Blackened Salmon, Certified Angus Ribeye, Creme Brûlée, the San Daniele Prosciutto, and Hen Egg Hollandaise. 2nd night of dinner service and you would have never guessed! Let me start by addressing the main entrance and the grand double height space - the design is so visually stimulating, so thoughtful and the designer created a sense of intimacy when you sit down, even when the restaurant was only 10% full the time we sat down at around 6pm. Service was excellent, the music and vibe was really great despite us eating so early and the restaurant being pretty empty until closer to the end of our dinner. I loved the little things about the restaurant that maybe most people don't care about.. the silverware was very hefty. The plates and server ware were so fitting for the setting. Like modern British royalty, but very unpretentious - just purveyors of nice things that are meant to last. Down to the print out and design of the menus and the paper choice, everything down to the last detail was thought out. We tried to go for a slightly more healthy menu for the night, so we started with a BLT Deviled Egg, and the Baked Dungeness Crab. The light watercress salad that came with the Dungeness Crab was very refreshing. Looking back, I wish I had fries to dip into the BLT Deviled Egg - it was fantastic. The gem lettuce underneath made it extra finger friendly. We also ordered a Grilled Snap Pea - the char is really delightful and if you like edamame this is for you. Mains we did the Steak Frites - medium rare - and the Pork Chop - medium. The fries were probably double fried and by golly they were so so crispy and sturdy on the outside and so soft and melty on the inside. Dipped in the jus *chefs kiss*. The Ribeye was grilled and seasoned well, so tender and really just melted in your mouth. The pork chop was excellent - I found myself building a perfect bite each time - a piece of pork dipped in the jus, followed by some pomme purée and a piece of asparagus on top, all in one bite. So good. We ordered 2 cappuccinos to end the night, along with their Chocolate Delice for dessert. The crushed hazelnut and bits of what I believe were caramel and cocoa nibs were the perfect touch and provided great texture with the mousse. The chocolate is really not very sweet nor bitter, played up just enough with the added elements which is definitely something I prefer in a chocolate dessert, and of course pairs so well with coffee. Bonus points for the Le Creuset, now I want one Will definitely be back to really indulge in Fish and Chips, the Marlowe Burger, the Wild Mushroom and Ricotta Tart, the steak tartare, and the Lamb Chops (all the other things we really wanted to try)! P.S. if you're feeling yourself, our biggest regret was not getting the Onion Rings. The weird American revolution theme is funny and cute for about 5 seconds until you realize it's a 1-star restaurant cosplaying as a 4-star. The prices are insane for the quality of service and food. My party was served a raw salmon filet not once but twice, and the manager told us "most customers request it on the raw side." Girl this is not an omakase restaurant, I don't want to see a salmon filet coming out undercooked. Not to mention as soon as we sent the food back, the manager made a point to avoid us on the floor until we were done and came up to him to give feedback. He responded by handing us his business card?? Like yes, I'll keep you in mind next time I want my enemies to eat undercooked seafood I guess. read more

Dined at The Cavalier on a Thanksgiving day which was also my first time there! Absolutely wonderful experience, in fantastic setting. Food was to die for and service could have been slightly better-but being Thanksgiving I do not hold a grudge on this one. Couple items: after finishing dinner I requested that leftovers be boxed, and it seems that whoever did the boxing decided that meat is not worth boxing. Second problem I found unacceptable was a mandatory surcharge to pay for health insurance for employees. This is great except at $100 per person per meal, it does not take a rocket scientist to compute that insurance cost is likely $3k per month per employee a rate which is not true. More than likely the owner found another revenue stream, and customers are suckers! read more
