The ambiance is cool with a serious nautical theme. Came on a really hot day and it was nice and cool inside. Service was strange. Waitresses were border line rude with the way they great people and how they take orders. It was almost like we were interrupting them. We came in after the lunch rush so maybe they were burnt out. The food was outstanding especially if you like fried clams. If your not into fried clams skip the double and triple. After eating I wish I had more of the Chowder and less fried clams. My girls platter was good the fish had good breading that stayed on the fish without falling apart. Shrimp were butterflies and battered differently but still good. Overall I do recommend this place. Just need to remember the staff is not all that welcoming, but the food made up for it

It's legendary for a reason. You want to drink beer and eat good? You won't be disappointed, the Chowder Burger is a game changer for many! There's a ton of write ups and foodie vids out there if you're curious, but if you're down in this neck of the woods it's can't miss.

Receipt with credit card fee prior to knowing how I was paying. Price wise food wasn't crazy expensive.

My friend and I chose this place because it sounded cool to eat on a barge. Our first view was the dirty water in the marina walking down ten dock to the restaurant. No a nice view. We get inside. We get seated. Look at the menus. Menu shows they had Diet Coke. My daughter and I both ordered one. When it arrived we both thought it tasted weird. I mention it to the server "that's because it's Coke Zero" Diet Coke and Coke Zero are not interchangeable, guests should be made aware of this especially when the menu says Diet Coke and that's what was asked for. Another note, fountain drinks only had one free refill. I ordered fish and chips, my daughter got the ham and grilled cheese sandwich with "fries", my friend ordered the clam chowder and her daughter got the shrimp basket. First, the "fries and chips" were not fries. They were potato wedges. Although potato wedges are fried potatoes they are not French fries. The fish part of my fish and chips wax good. The tartar sauce was sweet and that threw off my taste buds. My daughter and friend's daughter both enjoyed their orders. My friend said she'd give the clam chowder a 6/6.5. I tasted it. It wasn't bad, but tasted more bacon than clam. It was definitely an experience eating here. I forgot to mention when the check came it had a credit card fee on the check without knowing if I was paying with cash or card.

Located on an old barge the restaurant is small and well decorated the staff was very friendly and attentive. Food came quickly, was hot fresh and very flavorful. Chowder was full of clams, it was thick, rich and buttery. Cup $7, Bowl $10 well worth the drive to the marina.

First time here and definitely not our last. This place was so cute , the decor is very unique. Our server I believe her name was Victoria was very friendly and attentive:) very appreciated. My husband order a nice cold beer. Love that they have cold mugs. Hamburger was delicious. The clam chowder was hands down one of the best I've had. I had the chili cheese fries (not shown) yummmmy that chili has a spicy kick to it. Definitely will come back soon and bring our girls

OMG His is what you dream of when you think about your local spot! So much fun! Tasty food and drinks. The chowder was amazing! Had the chowder burger, ridiculous! My wife had chowder and chili cheese fries, yum! Servers were great! The space was epic!

I came to find some great chowder and I was a bit disappointed. The chowder taste like straight bacon. Don't get me wrong it was good but I was looking for clam chowder not bacon chowder. I also ordered the fish and chips and to make my chips extra crispy. I was a bit skeptical after tasting the chowder but the fish was juicy and fresh . The chips looks crunchy but were soggy with oil . I probably won't be coming back tbh. Staff was very friendly and service was quick

Found this by accident as we were looking for food in the area. What a cute floating restaurant. Don't let the "older" decor deter you from going, the food is delicious! It has a lot of a dive bar charm. It's in the boat dock. Friendly staff. I love the steam clam with garlic bread. It was their daily special.

Fish and Chips (maybe "oldish" oil being used)

Oh, how I wanted to rate this place higher but, there's good and bad. I always start with bad news first so, here goes... I ordered a bowl of clam chowder, and fish and chips. The "bowl" of clam chowder is served in a ceramic coffee CUP; I kid you not. (I'm guessing the "cup" of soup is served in a sewing thimble.) Anyway, an insufficient size for those looking forward to clam chowder, and a too-high price for the amount you get. The fish and chips was OK, but the fries were darker in-color than they should be. (Quite possibly due to frying oil not being replaced when it should be.) A definitely turn-off. Finally, there was the dreaded credit card surcharge. I'll continue to call-out those places that implement this very customer-unfriendly practice. Now, for the good. The atmosphere and service are terrific. It's a true barge, located in an area of boat docks. Location can be hard to find, but it's also hard to beat. Servers were friendly, and efficient; definitely the best part of The Chowder Barge. I'd love to come back again and again, just hope I can look past the negatives.

We made our way down to the marina to try the Chowder Barge. I'm from Seattle, where clam chowder is taken very seriously--it's a dish that's hard to get right and very easy to get wrong. Their clam chowder is delicious, but it isn't a traditional New England-style chowder. It's closer to a baked chowder, yet still incredibly flavorful and satisfying in its own way. I love places like this. The aesthetic is exactly what you'd hope for: gritty, vintage, and perfectly imperfect--a classic seafood dive right on the water. The staff was lovely, and the service was great. It's important to keep places like the Chowder Barge going. These unique, character-filled spots play an essential role in preserving culinary diversity.

First time here! This was the hubby choice, it was a pretty cool and a actual barge. Great for breakfast or date meal, it was interesting and different. Service was friendly, although she forgot to put our order in. She apologized and gave us a complimentary bowl of their award winning clam chowder to share Yummm! Accidents happen and we understand, Thank you for owning your mistake . We ordered the fisherman's plater fried fish, shrimp, clams and fries. It was delicious. We will definitely be back.

Cute old school spot. Didn't take a photo but get the off menu: chili and chowder. Didn't disappoint! The fisherman's platter was ok. Come for the ambiance and seafood. Service was great. Everyone including the chef was really awesome. Chowder burger is a must just at least one time.

This is such a fun and iconic place. I almost hate to review it, because I don't want it to get overrun with crowds! I came for lunch today. Of course, when a restaurant is named for a food, you have to order that item. I must say that this Clam Chowder may be the best I have ever eaten! So creamy and delicious, and loaded with clams. Super yummy!!! I added the dinner salad to round out the meal ( veggies you know). All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The service is prompt. The ambiance is one of the things that makes the barge so special....it jam packed with all kinds of nautical knickknacks....very fun to explore and look at all the interesting objects. A little out of the way, you can arrive by car or boat . But definitely go!!

My cousins and I got there around 9 p.m. on a Friday. It was steady, but when we went up for our first drinks the bar itself wasn't very busy--there were maybe two people in front of us and two behind us. I mention this because it matters for context. My cousin ordered two drinks, one for him and one for his girlfriend. We were talking and at some point I looked at his girlfriend's drink, which was already about halfway empty, and noticed a fairly large crack running across one side of the glass, right above where the remainder of her drink was. I said, "Hey, your glass has a significant crack in it," and she laughed it off and said she noticed and was just drinking from the other side. I told her she absolutely should not do that because there was already a chip near the rim and there could potentially be tiny pieces of glass in the drink. I also told her we needed to bring it to the bartender's attention because that's a legitimate safety issue. Someone who isn't paying attention could cut their lip or potentially ingest glass. By the time we went back up to the bar, it had gotten quite a bit busier. We explained what happened to the bartender and he asked if we got the drink there. We said yes and pointed out the female bartender who had originally served us. He asked what the drink was, walked away, served a few other people, and eventually brought us a replacement. We were completely patient. We understood that the bar was busier at this point, we weren't rude, and we weren't upset about having to wait. What bothered me was when he handed us the replacement and said, "Next time you need to let us know when it happens." That response really rubbed me the wrong way. It's not the customer's responsibility to inspect a glass before drinking from it, and obviously we would have said something sooner if we had noticed it sooner. Considering the bar wasn't particularly busy when the drink was originally made, I was also surprised that a crack that significant wasn't noticed before the glass was served. I did take a photo of the bartender afterward because I wanted to make sure I could identify the person involved when I brought the interaction to management's attention. I spoke with the person who identified himself as the manager and explained what happened. He said he would speak with the bartender, but the response also felt somewhat dismissive given that my concern was ultimately about customer safety and how the situation was handled. Accidents happen and glasses crack. Had the drink simply been replaced and the concern acknowledged appropriately, I honestly probably wouldn't be writing this review. It was the combination of being served a visibly cracked glass, being told that we should have notified them sooner, and then feeling like the concern wasn't taken particularly seriously when I brought it to management that ultimately prompted me to leave an honest review. Beautiful property and amazing view, but the way this situation was handled definitely left a bad impression.

Not because it was featured on a news segment, or something similar, but because I saw it on an episode of Monk. It was used as a background prop. Funny what writing helps you remember, and hopefully what you remember is good stuff. Before I stepped into this bar, I expected it to be a Diver bar, in the grittiest sense, but I was wrong, it is a Dive bar in the most exciting of ways: It is a collection of tchotchkes (a fancy word for trinkets) that when admired as a whole and then independently give this place a whimsical personality. Imagine having a friend that when invited to a pool party wears a bikini with a fun print--- like cherries or flamingos, and is always down for a shot and playful mayhem. Being around this type of personality amps up the party soul of a moment because their vibe is that of a buzz-nurturer. Meaning that when I was in the bar, and all it has to offer, made me want to have a good time, regardless of what I carried in from the outside. The place gives immediate Tiki Bar vibes but does not carry the moment to full fruition. For example, in my pictures I show curtains with Tiki Idols, and a light fixture adorn with its own hula skirt but the Tiki motif does not transport one to a Luau where dancers sway as they wait for a pig to finish roasting. Instead, the Tiki vibes are sharply contrasted with posters and other keepsakes that are both aspiration and life lessons. For instance, one reminds us to leave your drama outside. Another hanging placard lists advisories that (straight) men should adhere when hitting on women. One of these is the fact that some women's sexual preference is NO. Another poster explains what happens when girls drink too much. One of the 10 outcomes is that women confuse the kitchen floor for their mattress when laying down. Like I said, all of these small and bigger touches combine to give this place a personality that draws one to have a good time. For me, there were two standout items in the place- 1) a jukebox and a 2) pool table. I was with three people that played pool better than me. One of them explained the purpose of a chalk mound. One is suppose to rub the place between their thumb and index finger to get chalk right in there. Then rub the chalk on the stick. This will create less friction which will help you shoot better. I did all that. This moment also allowed me and another member of my group to have a lot of hard wood jokes-- what are you going to do, we were having a good time at this place, and these jokes felt right. The jukebox was also free. I played Ariana Grande's version of Popular from Wicked and I felt the song. I was warbling loudly, and off key, and dancing because I was feeling the tune and the drinks. At the end, some of the people in the bar clapped and hollered. I went to put in another song I was stopped, the regulars were watching football on a Sunday, go figure. That is the thing about this bar, it is a regular's bar. People knew each other, people knew I was the first timer. Like when I spoke, two or three people answered my question. When I was looking for the key a customer directed me to it. So this place is definitely a place where regulars are at. And if you know anything about dive bar culture, regulars who know each other make a community. So you will need to navigate these dynamics if you attend. For instance, one of my friends was in the bathroom, doing the business of two. A regular opened the door and my friend was like, I am here, closed the door. The regular did not close the door, instead he made a joke about leaving the door just a bit open, while being a bro about it. I was horrified just being a witness. But between bar flies these type of jokes might be understood as joyful. But it would take me an alternate life to find humor in potty politics. I was introduced to the White Tea shot and it has become my new shot so this place left a mark on my taste buds. The shot at the end had this strong green tea taste. The prices were right too! I can't wait to go here again, when the party vibe calls me forth! Oh and it is cash only, unless you spend 40 and above then it is card appropriate.

Your hao peng you (good friend) on Yelp is sending you a sign to check this hidden gem out! ;)…read more As someone of Taiwanese descent, I always get SO excited discovering Taiwanese restaurants and bars, which are admittedly a bit hard to find if you're not in East LA. We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

As for the food, it was pretty mid and took a long time to come out. The popcorn chicken especially disappointed me since it didn't taste like Taiwanese popcorn chicken at all. It was more like chicken nuggets?? Overall, I wouldn't recommend coming here for the food. The bathroom was also a bit dirty. Drinks: * Hua Sheng (3/5): Nutty aftertaste, but the alcohol flavor was pretty strong. * Salty Plums (4/5): My favorite out of everything we ordered, super refreshing. * Jasmine Milk Tea Coma (3/5): My second favorite, but I wish the strawberry flavor came through more.
