Went for fried belly clams. Haddock Reuben and the grilled trio. The belly clams were great. The Reuben was worth another look as it was interesting. The grilled trio had shrimp, scallops and haddock with lobster mashed potatoes. Very nice. Came back on Monday to try clam fritters and fried haddock. The haddock was very good but the fritters were awful. They tasted like play dough with eraser bits. Pretty gummy. They claim to have a 15% senior discount on Mondays but apparently you must be adamant about this when you first walk up. We didn't receive the discount. The beer prices apparently change with which bar tender you get. The outside picnic table was loose and felt like it may collapse at any time, but didn't. read more

This is my first time in this area(visiting a friend) and we decided to go to The Clam Box. It was described to me as a mostly fried food type of place with seafood. It's not a fancy place by any means. Upon arrival you walk into the front door to large menus on the wall(s) and 2 serving windows where you can place your order. As you walk through another door, you see the full bar(that has a list of specials(mixed drinks) as well as the sit down dining room with various sized tables. The servers brought out the food while you had to wait at the bar for your drinks(basically in the same room). The large selection of the food menu was a bit overwhelming but I've been wanting to try a lobster roll so that's what I got(it's new to me I'm from the South). I'm so glad I ordered that because it was amazing!!! And less than half the price of the ones in Cape Cod. I ordered it hot. It came with warm butter to pour over and fries(by request). The bread was like a buttered grilled cheese bread. Along with that we ordered a very generously sized mussel appetizer in wine sauce and they were also amazing. My kid's ordered a burger, chicken nuggets, a hot dog and my husband ordered the steak tips with rice pilaf. Everyone enjoyed their meals as well as the beers and mixed drinks we ordered. This place used to be our go to. The new location is very disappointing and if you liked the old one I wouldn't recommend going to the new one. Went and ordered a baked haddock dinner and clam chowder to go. They charged me 30 dollars. The food wasn't sitting there, they handed it to me from the kitchen. But less than ten minutes later, it was ice cold. The cap of clam chowder was loose and spilled all over the bag, car and me. After I cleaned up I went to taste the chowder and it tasted like nothing. I added salt and microwaved it and it was ok. The haddock was okay after being heated up again. Mashed potatoes were unremarkable. I am glad I ate it at home because if I wasn't able to heat it up, it would be inedible. Next day I went to Arby's and this fast food chain gave more, better, hotter and cheaper food. It's sad that I had a better experience at a fast food joint. There was also no handicapped parking available (2 spots that were full) and we had to park way in the back. I know that in New England whole-bellied clams and sea scallops are only beaten by lobster market prices, so it can be an expensive crapshoot, but for $87 we only got about 15 fried scallops and 15 fried clams and a large onion rings. The scallops and clams were undercooked (not golden brown, but kinda tan/yellow) and lukewarm in the middle. The clams were in battered clumps; which is a good indication that the fryers were not up to temp or the fat was suddenly cooled by overcrowding the fryers with other orders. Rookie mistakes and too expensive of a food item to have someone eff up your meal because of it. Even the onion rings were weird: tough & chewy (actually had to spit one out into my napkin as if it were plastic or cardboard). Maybe they're making the staff leave the tough green outer layer on them before slicing to save money. Who knows? Also, getting to the restrooms is like going below decks on a fishing boat; nearly impossible and dangerous to anyone even remotely disabled. Wonder if the ADA needs an email? Real shame. I was hoping this could be our new clamshack go-to since Ronnie's in Auburn closed forever. Nope. read more

Been stopping in here now for almost two years. Today, no longer as the experience keeps dwindling. Took over 1.5 hrs for food as they said the system needed to reboot. Couldn't even wash youre hands as the sink was clogged and full of dirty water, had to physically ask the staff where the food was after an hour wait. Just not a positive experience, each time we're here same shit happens, it's no longer a coincidence, this place just sucks. Granted the food is decent, but for the price you pay and the pain you go thru to receive, it's not worth it. The owner could at least reinvest in the bathrooms, or a new tender system.. no, they seem greedy and just want you're money. If you go here, expect 2 hrs. Minimum. I pass by this place once a week regularly so pick up dinner for my family. Orders are always placed an hour in advance with the specific time agreed upon when the call is made. Somehow, consistently I wait 20 additional minutes upon arriving for pickup. Today. I asked why that was but was told it was standard practice and could expect the same in the future and if I didn't want to come back 'That's fine'. What a poor business practice! Always my favorite place in the area for whole bellied fried clams, we ate here Saturday night. Four of us arrived about 5:30, waited over an hour for our food. The clams were over cooked, both those and my onion rings were hard and crispy, audibly crunchy with each bite. Another order of scallops looked the same. So I ordered my tips med rare and my side of Cole slaw, which I was told I would be given a med container of slaw. Ok, I'm not originally a new Englander and so I get excited about these sorts of places... And this one delivers on the goods. I ordered the fisherman's platter and couldn't finish, even the seafood, even though I tried. The batter was light and crunchy. I liked how crisp and delicate it was. Wow, yes, I am addicted to seafood platters and yes, this one was completely delicious. The building and interior have a lot of kitsch value. I would say, def worth driving out of your way for... And this is the first clam shack that I've seen which has outdoor seating and an interior with a bar and TVs playing sports. First, I want to say the food we ate was tasty overall. However, the take out service was dissatisfactory. I called in an order on a mid-Sunday afternoon for a hot lobster roll, Bites & Chowder, Caesar salad & lobster bisque. I had to repeat myself several times when I was trying to order the Caesar salad & lobster bisque. I repeated the entire order again and asked for the price and delivery time, which I received. When I arrived, the food was ready...sort of. The hot lobster roll I ordered was a cold one. I was also told the price I was given over the phone was incorrect. I would have to pay $5 more to get the order now because they said the price I was given reflected the cost of a cold lobster roll. I was told that I would get a hot one in 5 minutes and they would deliver it to my car outside. I was offered the choice to get a drink or small ice cream, but I declined because I didn't need the extra food/drink. I did get the lobster roll, but it was at best warm. I would really like to see an improvement on the service side because it is unnecessarily frustrating and a distraction to the otherwise good food. read more

my family has frequented the clam box when we just dont feel like cooking, you walk through the door and are greeted by friendly emloyees and most of the time one of the owners, we have our favorites as a family, mine is either the fish and chips, or the fish bites and chowder, my wife and daughter are partial to the pastrami and fries with chowder, but as most people are taste can vary. atmosphere is paramount when you go out and its clear that the clam box wants to see you return, they go that extra mile to make sure your happy we just left there hours ago and my belly is happy, the same as my family, its a small family business and in todays world its nice to be out we will going back frequently 5 stars all around and the chowders needs a little more clams but is so good, warms the tummy thanx clam box read more

Wow is all I can say, I ordered the seafood pasta. It was fantastic! Plenty of seafood, haddock, lobster, scallops, shrimp in a nice sauce that wasn't soupy or to dry, just right. Have never - ever had a bad meal there till last weekend. What a sad disappointment. Fish and. Chips severely overlooked and falling apart - soggy, nasty. And when we were in line waiting to order - the customer was asking if her fried clams had been "redone" yet as they were raw and cold the first time. That should have been the warning for us to head back out the door but we tried anyway. The place is a landmark and deserves better quality and management. Every surface of this place is dirty and uninviting. For a seafood place, the smell of the dirty oil and dumpsters is the last thing anyone should have to deal with when eating. Ice cream is way over priced and lackluster. The food is mediocre fried seafood. These places are a dime a dozen. The "kids" working here don't seem to care one way or another, so neither do I.
