It's certainly not hyperbole when you read reviews saying this is the best fish and chips folks have ever had. It's certainly in the running and I can't call out any fried cod I've have that's better. Incredibly light batter, firm yet perfectly flaky cod, just the right thickness and ratio of fish to batter, in a great vibe that feels like the sort of place only locals know about. This is more a southern fish shack than a British fish n chips pub. All they're doing is a few key pub-style foods but they're doing it as well as anyone. Add in great friendly staff and a quick wait and this spot easily earns all 5 stars! Well done read more

My sister's boyfriend is obsessed with this place so we came for dinner before they headed back home to the Upstate. I can see why - the fish is fresh, crispy, and the light batter doesn't overpower it. Fries were hot and delicious. Now that tartar sauce.... LOVE. I will be coming back. I am even going to pick some up on the way up to visit my sister at their request because these taste just as good as leftovers too they said. read more

Came here for dinner with some friends late on a Saturday night. We ordered both the half and full orders of fish and chips. My friend also got the mushy peas. The only difference between the half and full is that the full had a much longer fillet of fish. They have the same amount of fries. The fish was really delicious. Very crispy! The tartar sauce was perfect for it. I didn't try the cocktail sauce but that is the other option. The fries were more potatoe-y which was a nice addition. There is both indoor and outdoor seating with an eating area and then a portion of the room is kind of walled off with a bar. When we walked in, it smelled weird inside; don't really know how to describe it. But the food was good and we got used to it eventually read more

Excellent fish and chips located in the Park Circle area. There is ample parking in the gravel/dirt lot. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and we were inside. One of my dining companions was raised in England and said the fish and chips were excellent. I'd never had chips smothered in gravy and cheese but man am I Glad we had them. So delicious! There is plenty of searing on the regular side and a bit in the bar side and some outside as well. The service was fast and friendly. The decor is British themed and awesome. Definitely a steady stream of customers. Highly recommend! read more

Stopped in before a work meeting for lunch. Took me back to the street vendors in England who sell fish and chips rolled in a newspaper. I chose to go with the Fish Butty and a side of mushy peas. Like in England, the fish was served on a soft roll and came with chips, all wrapped in a newspaper. The fish was hot and crispy in the outside. Delicious! I could eat the mushy peas (puréed) for days. So good! Highly recommend The Codfather for lunch when you are in town. read more

There are a few things in the food world my wife is obsessed with. Not obsessed as in "can't get enough" but obsessed as in "I must find the best possible version" of that specific thing. The perfect crabcake, the perfect cheese pizza, the perfect peanutbutter cookie..... and the perfect fish and chips. We sought out fish and chipperies in London and that gold standard has yet to be met in the USA. CODfather comes darned close. We came to CODfather on the recommendation of a foodie friend. We over-ordered, as we are wont to do in many a new-to-us place to get a taste for things. So fish and chips, a meat and potato pie, a sausage roll. Enough to feed four. The fish was a very generous portion of fresh clean tasting white fish, batter cooked to a golden crisp and without a hint of greasiness. Tartar sauce was light in flavor but added a good touch to the fish. (I used malt vinegar instead, mostly.) The accompanying fries (or chips, if you want to pretend to be British) were plentiful and fresh. My wife considered them to be slightly overcooked, I didn't agree. The meat and potato pie was very much to her liking. The pastry was attractive and well cooked, the filling seemed nothing special to me, could have used more seasoning. But I bow to her taste on this point. The sausage roll was also generous -- a banger sort of sausage wrapped in puff pastry -- and had a nice flavor. So overall, quite good. Made my lady very happy. Next time, I will double up on the fish & chips and skip the rest, as the fish is really the star of the show here. read more

My husband and I have had CODfather at least a handful Of times and we were doing a memorial for my Mother earlier in the day and had family fly in from RI. Yes, the fish and chips are worth the hype. I love that they have indoor and outdoor seating and decent parking options! We came in on Friday and It took over 40 minutes to get 2 full orders of fish and chips for lunch...meanwhile we thought we would be in and out as we were trying to hit the road to "beat the traffic" on 26 (funny, I know). Anyway, the girls working were sweet and I honestly think they were doing their best to keep up with the demand (yay Lent). In short, we will be back! read more

Overall: 3.5-4/5; I would say that although very crowded and a bit tight inside, my family's experience was amazing in terms of our food experience. If you're looking for fresh and true to taste in a humble setting, this is your place! (disclaimer: they do have a small menu, but worth it!) Location: 4/5; it's located in N. Charleston, which isn't too terrible during rush hour (which is when we went), but the parking lot was just a bit small. In general though, it's easy access! I would just say it could use a bit more cleanliness indoors, as our table was extremely sticky and we just had to give it a good wipe. Service: 3.5-4/5; The CODfather has no table service, but the staff members were so helpful and great! It was our first time coming here, and our cashier was really open to answering all of our questions and giving us suggestions, which we appreciated--he also came and checked up on us during our dinner! Food: Our entire family ordered the World Famous Fish and Chips and I must say...it's absolutely the best fish and chips you'll find around here. It was very authentic, and the taste didn't leave too much of a fishy after taste--that's how we knew that the fish was fresh too. Our time in Charleston has come to an end. We got started on the road for home and as I was driving, the hubs was searching for a place to eat when he came across The CODfather. With a name like that, we knew we had to check it out. We got there about 10 minutes before they opened and there was already a line forming to get in. When a line is already forming, you know you have stumbled on something good. We both got the small order of fish & chips which was plenty enough for us. The cod is lightly battered creating a light, crispy crust and the fish is very moist and tender. Their homemade tartar sauce is very good and unlike any I have ever had before. However, the chips were quite a disappointment. We both found the to be very greasy and just unappetizing. Chips aside, the fish is some of the best we have ever had and that alone will bring us back the next time we are visiting the area. read more

This is THE place to get Fish & Chips. It's quick and easy. Not too much on the menu, because Why should there be? The parking lot is a little rough, so be careful. I got the half order and it was plenty of food. The fish was flakey and fried to perfection the "chips" were just the right amount of crispy. Of course I got tartar sauce and used the malt vinegar. The tartar sauce is a little extra but totally worth it. It's super nice seating outside. Inside is a little tight, so grab a spot at a picnic table outside. You CANNOT go wrong with authentic British Codfish & Chips with chips or fries. They have Mash if you'd like, mashed Peas but Stateside, we don't need or do Mash! Just add your vinegar, lemons, hot sauce and their homemade tarter, which is it's own entity. Come HUNGRY, leave comatose. Servings come in full 8 oz or half. Lterally the size of my arm or the half is from my elbow to my fingertip. Even the Sandwich is huge. Can reheat in oven or air fryer, NOT the microwave! They have an efficient order system, lots of parking and tables, inside and out, to accommodate everyone. Wear sneakers or sturdy shoes, as the parking lot's either rocky, mushy grass or both, and clothes you don't mind messing up. read more

A quick update 2+ years later. The CODFather continues to be my favorite place to eat in North Charleston when I'm in town for business. I've been here over a dozen times and it has NEVER disappointed. This visit I brought my family for the first time and they agree with my review and this is some of the best fish and chips we have had around the world! The full order is large enough for my wife and I to share, my daughter had the Manchester Special which gives poutine a run for its money. The service is rapid and very friendly and got the order right the first time. The ambience is pleasantly divey with plenty of seating inside and outside. Visit and you will be very happy. read more

She failed to indicate that they have off the menu items, and specials on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. It was kind of hard to choose since I had been eating seafood all week leading up to this visit and also trying to avoid fried foods this year. I ended up choosing the mussels and bowl of gumbo, along with a sweet tea. The tea tasted fairly similar to a lipton sweet tea from the soda fountain and not really something homemade and infused with fresh juices. Mussels - these were really good. Even if half of the mussels fell out into the broth during preparation. Gumbo - this was kind of questionable. My colleague also saw the redish hue of the liquid and said he was glad he didn't order it. It was filled with a lot of seafood, but the liquid was just too creamy. My colleague also commented on the etouffee that was being brought out to other nearby tables and supposedly it looked too dry. I also ordered a to go dessert. The bread pudding. It ended up being pretty decent though.

We drove 3 hours to try the fish and chips. The BEST we have had outside England. It is truly authentic. Adam does a great job keeping it in the style of a REAL chippy!! Fish was fresh. Batter amazing. Can't comment on the chips as we got there late and he had sold out. I suppose that means they were great. Mushy peas (made from scratch) were brilliant. Loved the decor. Just made me feel as though I was back in England. Adam created a home from home for Brits in SC. He's friendly and welcoming. Adam is amazing. His fish is amazing. The Codfather is amazing. It's in my neck of the woods, so the hipster in me is kind of bummed out that it's getting so popular, but it definitely deserves the publicity! The fish is large, usually too big for the little paper boat. My only complaint is the takeout. If it's busy and there aren't any seats in the restaurant, sometimes I like to go over to Riverfront Park to eat. As of this writing, they don't use takeout boxes, but just wrap the fish up in the boat with kraft paper. Get gravy on your fish (which you definitely should) and next thing you know, the gravy and fish are peeling off and stuck to the paper. read more

The whole cod was HUGE -- super flaky, perfectly cooked, and that crust? Light, crisp, with just the right texture. The tartar sauce stole the show for me -- full of flavor and not your average bland dip. The fries were okay, but I kinda wish it came with some coleslaw to balance it out. Still, for the price, this meal is a total win! So glad we listened to all the great reviews because they were spot-on. It's one of those meals that makes you happy you made the drive. Best fish and chips period. Tastes like you're in England or the Nordic region. Somehow manages to be crispy, fluffy, and not overly greasy. The batter stays crispy, not soggy like typical trash in America. You go in and it feels very retro and grungy but then they whip up some fish that'll make you slap your mama silly. Underrated is the curry, it actually tastes pretty good with the fish. Recommend getting the original fish and chips, cannot go wrong. read more

Finally tried CODFather with one of my Brit friends and it was very good - you cannot beat the brown gravy - very delicious to dip the chips in. No table service and treated like a dive, but the food is terrific and from what I understand, pretty authentic. I think I will call ahead next time to make sure the food is ready when I arrive The food was good and enjoyable as was the staff who were super kind and working extra hard with the high volume orders. The decoration is nothing fancy and more of a very campy ocean theme which I personally found amusing.
