This place was good. If you want a home like feel for your meal this would be the place. My boyfriend said you know its home like when they are out of stuff. I wasn't too fond of their meatloaf but their greens and hush puppies hit the spot. The Mac and cheese was good as well although it had an after taste of something I couldn't quite figure out. My boyfriend ordered wings and he said they were on point. We did wait awhile for our food but it just goes back to it being a home style place. When we first walked in I thought it was a bar. The oxtail was to die for! My fave dish here hands down! Fried chicken was crispy & flavorful. Loved the mac n cheese, and the gravy for the mashed potatoes is SO good! Was looking for some Soul Food that was open past 7:00pm. Seen this place on here and decided to try it out. Now as we walked in we felt a very home-like vibe. This does not look like your typical restaurant. The server was extremely nice and knew the right amount of time to give us before taking our order. What comes next is the best part. After a long day at work and commuting in traffic straight from hell, this was just what I needed! It was a toss up between the oxtails and the catfish. Well it so happened the table in front of us had just received their food of oxtails, catfish and grits!!! The smell of the oxtails made them a must try! Oddly cornbread didn't come with the meal. How do you have oxtails and gravy without cornbread?? I couldn't let go of the thought of the catfish either. Well lucky for me they had a happy hour portion of catfish and fries (and only $5.00) so I got those too for lunch the next day. Both were delish! Where there's smoke, there is FIRE!... Tried this spot having never heard of it , ordered shrimp & grits, ox tails and gravy (with rice), hush puppies and Mac n cheese+ strawberry lemonade. Every single item was P E R F E C T. The oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender, gravy was rich and succulent. Rice was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Grits were the perfect consistency, not lumpy, but buttery and toothy and shrimp were obviously cooked and butterflied expertly to order. When We broke Into the hush puppies, I was looking for sauce and didn't find any but they honestly didn't even need it. I was blown away at how moist AND crisp they were simultaneously. Expertly seasoned. I honestly don't usually fw them but these were fire. And lastly the Mac... ABSOLUTELY SLAPPIN'. I would order 5lbs if they sold it. So creamy, cheesy and garlicky. It was the first bite I took of our to-go order and on god, I hollered. Took about 30 Minutes for a to-go order on a Tuesday evening, service was friendly and fast. The restaurant is inside of the Esquire Club, as others have mentioned, but please don't let the large event space atmosphere throw you! This is the second time giving this place a chance. The first time, not long after they first opened I had the shrimp and grits. They were tasty but way too many grits and not enough shrimp. Fast forward to today, I decided to try the oxtails...there were only three when there were supposed to be 5 or 6, cold, probably warmed up from the day before and tasted like they were cooked in a can of crushed tomatoes with no seasoning. Listen, I'm so grateful. I'm from Texas. Born and raised in the south. Therefore, southern comfort food is ingrained in me just like my bloodline. Upon entrance the aesthetics are not something that pop or wow so please don't be turned away by first appearance. My friend and I went during the day and the place was pretty empty - I hear it comes alive at night - so we weren't sure if we were in the right place or not. After ordering we were a little worried about getting soul food outside of the south but we were not disappointed. The fried chicken was breaded just right and seasoned with a perfect crisp crunch. Now I live and die by sides when it comes to soul food. The sides were very good as well. I got the Mac n cheese and greens! The mac and cheese was baked and extremely cheesy, smooth with a light crisp taste upon bite. I'm very particular about my Mac n cheese so it's not the best I ever had but still worth the selection. Now on to the champ, THE GREENS. Now I LOVE greens! These were so good! They were extremely tender and flavored but not overbearing in terms of seasoning. They were so good I took them to-go and ate them the next morning for breakfast. Upon exiting I asked the cashier if the cook was from the south and she said no, he was from Seattle. Needless to say good food is everywhere even southern comfort cooking. If you have the time go, it's worth it. Chicken was fried but was very light toast colored and not fried as long as It should have been. It was not golden or crispy. Worse, there was no seasoning at all on wings. I am salt sensitive and always prepared for to much salt but this chicken had no,I mean no seasoning! No salt, no pepper,nothing.I called to notify them because obviously somebody forgot something in prep today. They denied any problems and told me they season the chicken and the flour.
