My wife and I were looking for a place to have a Valentine's lunch. I turned to Yelp to see what was nearby. We stumbled across The Common and figured their menu looked interesting so we headed down there. The place is small, cozy, and almost had a "I'm in my kitchen" feel. Probably because all the cooking is done right there in the middle of the restaurant along one wall - surrounded by the tables. It's actually pretty cool to see the chef whip up tasty creations right there. The uniqueness of the menu made choosing a meal tough by I opted for the corn chowder and chicken sandwich. My wife got the burger. Lemme tell you something folks, I've never had a corn chowder with dried prosciutto in it. It was phenomenal. Tasted homemade and I even asked and was told that everything is made from scratch in house. The burger my wife ordered was as if they took fresh unfrozen beef and slapped together an amazing patty. It was done right and seasoned with perfection. The chicken sandwich I ordered blew my mind. Again, it was as if they took a chicken cutlet and battered and seasoned it just like homemade. The mustard was a masterpiece on your taste buds. The service was great. The girls there were very attentive and polite. I have been meaning to dine here for awhile because the word of mouth has spread across Brooklyn about this place, and boy did it live up to the hype. When there is a line of people waiting outside in the middle of a weekday, you know it must be good! Firstly I've been to this place with my wife about a dozen times or so. Generally the food is good, quality perfectly made to order healthy comfort food. This time was not different. The difference this time was the service. Usually we've been served by an Asian gentleman with glasses or a few of the younger girls that worked. Always and I'm mean always great service. It's a small place and the service oriented attention to detail is very much part of this place's charm. This time it was a gentleman I've never seen before. No real welcome or a hello. He did make sure to tell me I couldn't have a Dunkin' Donuts cup inside which I knew and only brought it inside to throw it out. Secondly my wife and I move our seats but before we sit down I ask if it's ok that we move. His response was "you already did." Mind you it was a Wednesday at 2:30 and it was us and another couple in the restaurant. We sat for a while until he finished cleaning and resetting all of the tables that left. All of them! He took our order. No water was given. He did give water to every other table that came in after though. No refill on drinks was offered. He left my dirty on the table for a while. He wasn't busy. He just didn't feel like taking it away. It's not that he was rude he just did the bare minimum if that. A far cry from the level of service that has been consistent with this place. He one of those waiters that you have to ask for something. Pretty sad overall. This is one of my favorite places in Brooklyn. read more

I can not seem to love it here and I really want to! I have ordered here at least five times since my original review and each time it's the same, mediocre food that is nothing to write home about. So far, I've had the chicken sandwich, two grain bowls, and the warm salad, and each time I felt jipped of my money. Today I ordered the cavatelli with smoked tomatoes, bacon, corn, and topped with slices of prosciutto. The pasta was cooked to perfection but that was all that was great about this dish. Amazing from the moment I walked in . We got our temperature checked and a paper to fill out our name that had our temperatures on it . Very well prepared for covid tracking . There is nothing "Common" about this unique little gem! The service was exceptional and the food was so good that everyone at our table left their plates completely clean. This says a lot since their portions are pretty large. I had the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and fries on the side , my mom had the same but with cured ham and house potatoes, and my boyfriend had the crispy chicken sandwich with fries. We also got the French toast sandwich to split for dessert and my gosh.. it was magical. My mouth is watering from just thinking about how warm and flavorful it was. Everything was cooked perfectly. They made me a hot chocolate with a shot of espresso (I call it a CHOCOLADA in my home town) and you can tell it was made from scratch. I tasted the fresh chocolate, notes of nutmeg and even rose! Once I was seated, my order was immediately taken and the wait game began! We ordered potatoes to share, skillet eggs with chorizo and eggs Benedict, and also a mango iced tea. I was honestly disappointed with the potatoes to share because there was barely any seasoning, it wasn't flavored at all; I barely tasted the rosemary! My skillet eggs were decent and I really enjoyed the chorizo, however I felt that it was too much egg and started getting very full after a few bites. My boyfriend liked his eggs Benedict with fried chicken, BUT the fried chicken could of used some more flavor as well. I noticed that we were drenching our food in hot sauce just so we could have some semblance of flavoring, and it helped a tad bit. Lastly, the mango ice tea isn't your typical tea thays sweet. I came here for the first time with my friend who lives in the area. We ordered the burrata appetizer and it was very delicious. I really liked the balsamic glaze on the side and the mozzarella was extremely fresh. For the main course , I got the gnocchi with ricotta inside and some pesto sauce and red sauce. Let me just say I didn't love it. It was different. The gnocchis were fried something like fried ravioli and the sauce was at the bottom ( only a small amount) which was kk d of strange. The sauce wasn't bad... but there was only maybe 2 drops of pesto on it. I think next time I'll try something else. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing because my friends bowl with quinoa egg and pickled salad was pretty good from the 1 bite I tried. I'll definitely give this place another chance. I had been here twice and both was a good experience. My better half took me here and he loves this place. There will be wait time over the weekend, but the wait is worth it. The staff here are nice and pleasant as well. I adore their open kitchen and I love the way they prepare their skillets for some reasons, haha! I am a big fan of benedicts and I like to go a bit crazy (I tried a rib eye benedict in some other brunch spot out of state) so I like their unique take on that. The second time, I got their skillet with three poached eggs, herbs, greek yogurt, and some stew. Pop that poach egg and see the runny yolk blend with the stew. Pick up the pita bread on the side and dip it. It was delightful! In addition, the better half told me to order their hot chocolate (aztec style? It has jumbo marshmallows!!!! OMG!!!!!) and it was one of the best I've tried. I love that it has a little "zing" when drinking it. I felt some mild spice at the back of my throat.
