I haven't been to the Commonwealth since it first opened. They are dealing with many tables but limited staff. What an excellent experience. We got service right away, and even though we didn't see the person who initially took our order, anytime somebody walked by we were able to get the help that we needed and it was really a wonderful experience, with the beautiful view that only the cascade Mountains can offer. We did not expect anything out of this place. Featured on the sign for the exit as a food option, often these type of off-the-highway local establishments can be greasy spoons or glorified microwaves. But The Commonwealth is GREAT! The decor is really unique and fun-- like a log cabin decorated on the interior with a pastiche of road signs. They have an amazing view of the mountains all around. They have a variety of beers on tap and a full brewery next door. And the food is exactly what you're looking for on a long drive through the national forest. I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup, which was so satisfying and homey but also just a little inventive; the tomato soup had roasted chickpeas in it which made it just a bit different from a normal tomato soup. The sandwich was cheesy but not overly greasy, and super savory between the sourdough bread and the types of cheeses they put inside. And free refills of Diet Coke! This is a place you should PLAN to go to, if you're not lucky enough to happen upon it like we were! read more

My wife and I took our family here for breakfast. The pastries were amazing especially the banana bread. It was so moist, we thought we were tasting cake. We also ordered cinnamon roll and cheese/bacon bread. They were all excellent. We stayed a little longer to use the free WIFI and watch the World Cup on TVs. We could not stop ourselves when they started serving lunch. We ordered pile up potato wedges and hummus plate. No need to say they were all delicious and big portion. We are planning to go back again during dinner time and cannot wait to try their desserts! We are so happy to find this great place and love the vision of The Pass Life. This was first time visiting the Commonwealth and it wasn't a great visit at all. The staff was very friendly when we first got there but it soon went down hill. We ordered our drinks and food at the same time. We got our drinks in good time. Our food on the other hand took forever. After waiting 45 minutes and asking about our food several times, the manager finally delivered half of our food order and told us the rest would be out soon. Boy was he wrong. After waiting another 10 minutes and still no food, we asked our waitress to cancel the rest of the food order as we had to go. (Our food order consisted of 1 order of kids sliders and 1 grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup) the manage came with our bill and only removed the grilled cheese from our ticket. No sorry, no let us take something else off your bill because your food never came, nothing. The manage than took my credit card for payment and never returned it. We had to go find him and he had it in his pocket. What kind of manager sticks a customers credit card in their pocket??? I will never return here and will be letting everyone I know not to go here as well. read more

Good food. Bad service. I want to preface this review by saying it brings me no joy to write it. My friend suggested this restaurant after a long morning of sledding with the kids at Iron Horse Park. We came in around 2pm the Thursday before Christmas for a late lunch. There were 10 of us, 4 adults and 6 kids. They were busy and full, so they split us up, the kids at one table and the adults at the next table over, which was also designated as the "bar section". Our server Katie came over and took our orders (without telling us there was a kids menu or asking us about our water preferences) We had to ask for kids menus and for kids cups and water without ice. So we get our orders in and we're waiting for our food. After a while some of our orders come out. I am waiting for everyone to get their food and because I can see the open kitchen I see other orders coming up, but none of them are ours. I see other plates going to people who were seated after us. So after waiting a good 10 more minutes I approached our server Katie (who is currently behind the bar serving drinks) and ask her about the rest of our food. She cuts me off mid sentence and says "Yeah it's coming" and turns away! So finally all of us get our food and we eat. The food was good. I had tomato soup and I tried my sister's fries with the aioli dipping sauce. Wonderful! Then as we are finishing up, a man that i can only assume is the manager, as he didn't properly introduce himself asks us how everything was. I say "The food was good, but the service could have been better." He then interrupts me and says "Yeah, well we're busy." Then he walks away! I wouldn't have left a tip, but a 18% gratuity was already added...maybe that's why they felt they could treat us so rudely. This is a cool spot. We've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I came in with a group of six. We moved spots a couple of times to accommodate our group (started with four chairs and moved to a six spot after people left). The space is bigger than I thought it'd be from the looks of it outside. There is also a nice bar area if you want to avoid the masses and outdoor seat by people were enjoying even in the snow. Food - I got the grilled cheese (add bacon) with tomato soup. The grilled cheese was good as was the soup. Nothing really spectacular, but really hit the spot after an hour of tubing. I also got some potato wedges which were pretty flavorful I thought. Big serving so a nice share plate. Service - Our server was efficient, pleasant enough I guess, as long as there was no indecision, then she couldn't hide that she was irritated LOL (-1 star). Otherwise, the rest of our experience here was nice. Great spot. I love the industrial look of the space, the lighting, the openness and the shared tables. All so very ski area, loved it. The food is great, too bad the service was terrible, continually messed our order up - to the point where people around us were watching and finally chimed in that they couldn't believe what they were witnessing from the staff, who seemed to care less. They never got my gf's burger right, so she only got the wedges even though we paid for 2 full meals and 2 beers, $50... worst experience ever after snowboarding and stopping in. We've been coming to The Commonwealth for several years, apres ski, and a few times I've brought visitors up from the Eastside during a spring or fall visit. The service is casual but attentive, the food is great, and the drinks are excellent. I have trouble going past their grilled cheese and tomato soup or buffalo chili, but their salads are great when I'm not warming up after skiing. We went here this past friday, i must say the food was good on my end. however, my lady ordered a burger with no cheese. when her order arrived, of course there was cheese in it. the girl serving us was apologetic and asked if they could just scrape it off. My lady said no because she really cant stomach the cheese taste. So the waitress brings the burger back, couple minutes later comes back with the burger and its obvious they tried to scrape the cheese off as there was still cheese on it. Stopped in with the fam on our way up to the cabin in Cle Elum. Dumping snow but they had outdoor tables that were covered. Only two tables had fire pits and it would have been nice if they had some heaters for the others but other than that great atmosphere and the staff was all very friendly. Took 20 minutes to get our order, 80 minutes to get our food, while people who sat after us got served around us. Like they sat down 45 minutes after us! Seat yourself is hopelessly broken here. Never brought more water casks, so served ourselves. (Asked twice). Here's the rub, when we got there there were 30 total people (numbers went down during our stay), and we counted 11 employees!--So it's not just short staffing. Initial waitress took our order, disappeared never to return. Only got served when we questioned where was our food, then got served by three different people since our order was messed up. Fix your service! Just because you have a monopoly doesn't mean I won't pack a lunch next time. Maybe they are better in winter but this was ridiculous! Either there is no management or there is no system in place for who does what. So, for the food: Burger was overdone and tiny. Grilled chicken sandwich was ok, generic tasting (think fast food) and the few potato wedges were leather. Portions were indeed small, the price however was not. Appetizer was ok, just took far too long to get to us. Overall, food was below average and service was non-existent. No personality or emotion showed by anyone who helped us. We visit the Commonwealth all year long because it's been the best spot at the pass - even making the drive up in the off season for the view and food. This last visit I was thoroughly disappointed though. Something happened to the quality. My salad lettuce was wilted and had rotting pieces of lettuce. The strawberries appeared to have been either thawed from frozen or soaked in water for a week. There was 1/8 of a cup of beets on it and it was a beet salad with a capital beet. The menu should be updated more often and it would be nice to have some more vegetarian options besides salad and mac, especially if you guys can't get the quality of the salad right. Surprisingly good food for an establishment at a ski place. Usually there's no where else to eat and they know it. We came here because the place next door was full but I'm sure glad it turned out this way because we really liked the food. Hubby and son liked the selection of beers. I split the 906 burger and BBQ pulled pork sandwich with a friend. The 906 burger was good but pretty average for a burger. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich was sweet and tangy but it got the bun very soggy quickly because it was pretty oily. The potato wedges were large and the perfect amount of crispy and salty. They had plenty of outdoor seating that was spaced appropriately. It was a mix of preexisting outdoor seating with heaters and newly added picnic tables added for covid precautions. First in full disclosure I'm writing this review about 6 months after my last visit. I've been to The Commonwealth in 2015 and twice in 2017. So every time I land in Seattle and drive to West Richland I stop here. Second, there always have some good beers. I've sat in the brewery side, restaurant bar and restaurant at a family style table. The advantage of the group tables is meeting new people and sharing experiences and notes on what to do and where to go. If you like IPA's I rated Hop Session IPA at 4.25 on Untappd. Their Kolsch I only rated at 3.00. The other 3 beers I've had there are no longer on the menu. Other than the burger I do not remember what we had, but I know that my wife and I were both happy with all our meals. Yes service can be slow and less than desirable. Your in a mountain pass. They have a limited population to work with. Besides your on vacation, relax and go with it. read more

My 70 year old father was at this restaurant today for lunch. He waited to order for about 15min then had a burger and glass of wine with a friend. After being there for about 40min at most and still eating his meal a large group came in. The manager or owner came to him and said it's time to leave because they had been there an hour... which wasn't the case and no one else was there. This persons only response was that it's written the menu, No apologies... poor customer service and very rude when you have paying customers still eating their meals. There are many things I love: Like high fiving old ladies, petting random animals while breaking into peoples houses, the warm feeling of your poodle randomly winking at you when you ask him "if you love me?", running with my poodle while eating and reading on fire, and a good glass of Mezcal. (Takes you back to elementary school where you had to sit next to people.[Which is an interesting concept, unless you have a larger group and you awkwardly get separated and have to sit two tables away from your group.{But thats how you tell someone that the group doesn't love you anymore and there just going to leave before you finish your food.. Jacob o.o}]) The deers up on the wall are a classic touch. (Which gives any hipster kid with a plaid shirt the perfect background instagram picture. [Because if they don't take a picture, it never happened.] but I can't talk. Due to going running and finding out that I didn't bring my FitBit. *heart-break*) The bar Section is small, with a little small fence that divides the bar to the dining section. With 3 small long tables (Or at this point I think its just a table... oh Kai -.-) for small groups, and a row of chairs to sit up next to the bar.(Which is always amazing to smell other peoples drinks from their breath, due to the level of how amazing his pop-up collar is and how much Gel is in his hair.) The Bar decoration is a collage of road signs that really make it come together with a flow of abstract and edgy designs. (Kinda like when your buddy says he stole that stop sign for his door, only for you to see a price sticker for "Spencers" on it but you just let him finish his daring story about how he stole it and almost went to jail. Only to bring him down after he finishes. *insert evil squirrel laugh*) There is a small section outside, if you want to nestle down with your thoughts and food. (Which no thanks, I don't want people to watch me eat.. The restaurant would lose clients due to the monstrosity eating next to the entrance.) The restaurant was a bit dirty and I could say that most of the tables looked like a pack of wild raccoons went through paradise garbage land (Real place! .o. its like the entrance to Narnia.. you got to believe its there.[Or be a raccoon.]) and that was the aftermath, but the smell of food and warmth is what brought us in. (Like a moth to a volcano.) Costumer Service: Welp! *takes a big breath and counts to ten in one-poodle-yawning, two-poodle-yawning....* I could say that customer service is exceptional and just down to earth, the best interaction I had with a person to person base... but id be lying to you. (Like my Dad use to lie, that if I ate chocolate after 9 I would get pregnant. [That logic as a child made so much sense and I must admit that some nights I hesitate still. .-.]) Walking in we were greeted with a "Hello" (The kinda hello you give your brother after you got into a huge fight because he broke your Backstreet Boys Millennium album and your mom told you to make up.) from the receptionist. When asking for estimate time she was gone.(She was a magical leprechaun, that disappears when she hears the word "customer service") The staff seemed short handed and every opportunity we got to speak with any staff was when they were cleaning tables. To that extension, we were ignored and only glanced at when trying to find any help. (It was like if I was a yeti in a Sasquatch convention.) Luckily, we were helped from another customer showing us that the menu was outside as well so we could view what we wanted. He informed us that the time was about a 30-45min wait and getting your dish was going to be another 30mins.(That guy just got employee of the year for the next 10 years! [Thanks random stranger with too many kids for two people.]) We proceeded to head to the bar where not a glance was acknowledge. (Even when we were hovering and trying to get someones attention. [We waited 10mins ._. you think i'm joking, but i'm not sadly.]) We left :c Conclusion: Horrible customer service, good atmosphere. Sad unicorn! No food, i'm devastated to be presented with a great potential place, but the service of a crack addict meth house. LOL! This place is a joke. I waited almost two hours for a grilled cheese and tomato soup and watched them hand that dish to a customer that ordered after me. I ended up just leaving and they wanted to charge me for a meal I didn't have. The seat-yourself concept doesn't work for them, orders get misplaced and lost track of. They're in business because they are the only place in town. Not good for groups. Not good for kids. Not good, period. The beer is good, but that's from Dru Bru. I've been coming here for about two years and have finally reached my limit. The service is insanely slow, more so than any busy period, COVID protocols, or basic inconveniences would justify. I want to give all restaurants the benefit of the doubt currently, but coming in when there are two active tables, three chefs in the kitchen and two servers should mean that you get normal service. Not a 30 minute wait with cold food when it finally arrives. People only go here because it's the only sit down restaurant available and that doesn't excuse their incompetence. Even worse - half the time the food is terrible. It's completely hit or miss, so you can't even count on getting a good meal if you're willing to wait. Sometimes the fried chicken sandwich is fire, others I've literally thrown it in the trash after one bite. Being your food to the mountain and save yourself the frustration. read more

We were sitting in Dru Bru having a beer and decided to get lunch from The Commonwealth because they deliver from next door. They brought our food quickly which was much appreciated. I had the 906 burger with bacon. The fries were excellent, but that's about all the nice things I can say. Portions were very small for a $15 burger and fries. My girlfriend joked that the burger would have been more appropriately called a slider given its tiny stature. The burger was pretty good, but not $15 good. I think we counted something like five fries on the plate, although to be fair they were larger steak fries. She had the queso fundito, and it was decent. The chorizo was pretty tasty, but yet again very small portion for the price. Overall, this is an ok place if you're having a beer next door and get hungry, but I wouldn't eat here again otherwise. read more
