Unique and cool restaurant. Decor is eclectic and nostalgiac with multiple rooms/themes including a lounging living room, two dining areas and a bar / waiting area. The Tibet region was featured as the travelling component of the menu and even though I'm picky we decided to come here and explore. We had to wait given our attempt at a last minute reservation but nevertheless happily accommodated. Our server was Deja who was great and very enthusiastic about the food. Although we were two, when visiting a city, my business partner and I go overboard on ordering numerous dishes so as to sample and taste many different items. We had the vegetarian dumplings, Munster Mini fried breaded potato balls representing Ireland, Sauteed string beans from China and Jollof Rice with Grilled Chicken. Each were good to very good although we did not care for the Jollof Rice. We also had the Kalibi Short Rib (each of us loves short ribs) which were very good and the Mount Everest Sherpa Stew which was more soup (with large chunks of beef) than a typical saucy stew - so personally it was good but not what I preferred. Our server insisted that we try the pistachio cake which was delicious. Highly recommend that you try this place at least once. Very unique and worth a visit. read more

One of the most interesting restaurants in Atlanta! The Consulate serves food from around the world and they change up their country of focus every quarter. We went during Papua New Guinea and I thought the food and service were fantastic and the decor is absolutely amazing, but management could be a lot better! We had a reservation for 7:15 and we got there right on time. We were told our table was still being set up and we could just wait at the bar. The bartender was nice and I got myself a tasty cocktail, but we sat around until 7:45/7:50 when our table was FINALLY ready. We were really disappointed that it took 30 min for us to get to our table even with a reservation and the Consulate supposedly has a 2 hour dining window for each table. Luckily our server was great, food came out fast, and the food was pretty good too! We started with their Munster minis and then shared the jollof rice and their Papua New Guinea national dish. Everything tasted great and portions were huge (I had 2 more dinners at home afterwards). I've only had it a couple of times, but their jollof rice was soooo good like 10/10 would always order it here! I'd definitely like to come back to The Consulate when they have a unique country on their menu, and maybe if I'm lucky, I might one day get the opportunity to spin the globe. Get ready to open your wallet for this fun restaurant. We spent 100 dollars per person including tip. We got drinks and 5 items, we knew it would be pricey, just warning you before you go in. It's a bit of a hidden restaurant make sure to read their directions on how to get in. The place is immaculate, beautiful and sexy. They play up the james bond theme. Perfect for a date nite or a double. I think reservations might be a tad bit overrated, they were full three weeks out but I saw many empty seats. The service is good not great. We asked for recommendations, but the server wasn't very enthusiastic nor descriptive. The food goes from decent to really good. Our favorites were the shrimp and the Taro Pastry Puff. The shrimp spices and seasoning were out of this world. The taste from the puff were decadent. The lamb chops were a bit dry and the curry in the pineapple was okay. The okra had different sizes from, large woody and chewy to small and soft. Bottom line if you are fine with spending some money you have to go. Best vibe in the city. So many things to see on the walls and even in the bathrooms! One unique aspect is the "waiting lounge" while your table is ready. Just super cool. Service was impeccable. Tabby was in town and in usual Tabby flow she was exploring the atlasobscura website and came across The Consulate. As such, we decided to go. We had reservations for 06:15 on a Friday. Arriving about 20 minutes early as traffic happened to be light, we were able to be seated early without any issues. Upon entering the restaurant the hallway decor captures your attention as you focus on the selected hues of blue and artwork placement. Upon being seated we were immediately greeted by Cindy. Cindy arrived all smiles coupled with a huge personality and warm welcome. As this was our first time she took a moment to explain to us the menu selections, geographical inspiration, as well as answer the few questions we had about select items. Cindy's education of the menu and experience with the foods added to the food deciding experience. Major shout out to Cindy. The ambiance of the restaurant is high energy, captivating and explorative. As you look around the restaurant it puts you in the mindset of being inside one of the classic true to theme castles in an Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider movie. LoL! At any moment Laura Croft could walk in and grab one of the items on display and head out for her next mission. LoL! I decided on the String Beans with a side of Mexican Rice and I was more than satisfied with the flavor profile of my meal. The string beans were flavor stacked with the slight sweet from the sauce and the spice from the peppers. The texture was spot on for a true sautéed experience as well as the portion was perfect... I honestly don't even know where to begin... I've been a Yelp elite for many years now and have only given a 1 star to 1 place EVER! Also I've never written a review this extensive so please read it before considering this place. I made this reservation over a month ago. I wanted to try this place so bad. I'm so disappointed Our waitress was honestly so wonderful until about 1/2 way into our meal. I guess once I made a complaint our good service ended... She basically ignored us unless I waved a hand at her which I hate doing (it seems so tacky) I ordered the bulgogi dish (it was not apart of their Irish theme obviously) but I was so excited to try it. I received the dish and had 1 bite of it and immediately thought it was awful. I told the waitress I didn't like it and she took it away. I never had more than that 1 bite. Otherwise everything else was amazing. My husband loved his shepherds pie, the cocktails were great, as well as the dessert. I assume most people would think this way, but after only having one bite of a meal and knowing it was terrible you would assume that you wouldn't have to pay for it, right? So once the bill arrived and we noticed the bulgogi on it we asked that it was removed since we didn't eat the dish. She told us the policy was that once a dish had a single bite in it she couldn't take it off the bill. We were okay with that since it was the business' policy. We would never hold that against her but we also weren't happy with it. So my husband asked to speak with the manager. I ended up leaving and walked back home to take our dog out. We had our credit card out to pay the entire time BTW. We weren't ever going to try and skip out on the bill. We just wanted the one item removed. The rest of this post is going to seem like I made it up or was apart of a movie it's so bizarre. After about 15 minutes the waitress asked my husband to get up because they needed the table for other guests and had him step to the side. Even though that is super unconventional he did with no complaints and waited next to the bar area. About 5 minutes later someone came up to him and it ended up being the owner of the restaurant. He had an ARMED security guard with him and asked my husband what the problem was. After explaining the situation my husband asked why there was an armed guard with him and the owner said incase it got confrontational!!! Like WTF what kind of business do you have that you have an armed guard and have so many complaints that you need someone like that. My husband was actually so shocked and honestly slightly scared he thought HE was in trouble. So he ended up paying the bill as it was and left. Can you even imagine being scared at a restaurant you were paying to eat at?? When we got there my husband and I were talking about how we'll come every 3 months so we can try their new menu (which in general is such a cool concept) since we live walking distance. I'll never be back ever. We could have hosted so many functions their since it was a beautiful place and has great ambiance but besides that the entire experience left us feeling very uncomfortable and scared. What an awful place and I'll make sure to tell all of our friends about this experience so that none of us spend another dime here! So found this on a whim of a search. The restaurant is really cool. Lots of funky art on the walls. Spaces filled with numerous layered pieces set with the dark wood just made is great. Clay was our waiter and he exceeded expectations of service with his food insight and checking on us. His recommendations were spot on. The food was amazing. Fabulous experience here celebrating our birthdays, everything was perfection! What a unique concept, spinning the globe and changing the menu every 90 days! The decor is fun, plenty of photo ops. Even the bathrooms are unique. The drinks and food were truly a delight, there were 6 of us and not one item was a miss. Parking was tricky but they validate. So I thoroughly enjoy this spot! If you want a kind of vibe that gives you antique spy artifact and historical time capsule, this is your spot. It's really good if you were trying to do something like maybe a small gathering or a date night. I just sat at the bar and I still had a really good experience. There's plenty of pictures and artifacts on the wall that really have a lot of age to them so it really helps the ambience along, it's not like your typical modern hookah bar you might find out in Atlanta. The decor was the star of the show. You need to go at least once! Of course it's a full bar with a full menu as well. I didn't come for food but the drinks were really good. AMAZING! I wish I had more stars to give. The concept of the Consulate alone is intriguing. A new menu from a different country every season...YES PLEASE! Right now, they take us to Korea. And what an adventure it was. First, the environment is very intimate and unique. Great for a date, but also a killer girls night. For this trip, I was on a girls night. Next stop, the drinks. The Moroccan sunset (forgot a picture) is delicious and a work of art. I loved the Seoul Survivor - not too sweet. We did family style and just ordered a few different things to share everything. EVERYTHING was amazing, but I'm going to rate in order of what I loved most, and this is actually really hard to pick favorites. 1. Bulgogi Black Truffle - I'm literally here still salivating about how amazing it was while reviewing. The truffle isn't overpowering, and pasta and bulgogi is quite a genius combo. 2. Duck Confit - Savory and sweet, a great starter to share. 3. Nuuk Chops - Cooked perfectly, seasoned expertly. The mashed potatoes are delicious and sauce is sweet that balances the savoriness. 4. Turkish Cheesecake - I love a homemade cheesecake. The crust is delicious and consistency is perfect. So tasty 5. Pork Belly - There is a little more of a kick than I expected, but melts in your mouth and so flavorful. Our server was amazing! Fun fact, service fee is included, and we were only a party of 3. Parking was easy, we parked in the 10th deck and just walked around, down the steps and the entrance is on the side of the building. The tone was set when a drink arrived and imbedded in the large, clear ice cube was a golden flower. If was the first time I tried Jollof of rice and I am a fan. Perfectly cooked rice with tomatoes, peppers, okra, warm African spices and a hint of heat. I could have made a meal of this dish. Lamb chops with a blueberry sauce were eaten even by our 'I don't like lamb' friend. A dish of chicken, taro, carrots, pineapple etc was stunning presented in a coconut half and tasted even better than it looked. After 20+ years of living in Atlanta, I had yet to hear of the consulate. I must live under a rock, but apparently there are quite a few people not in the know about this place. Steps away from the Midtown Marta station right off 10th St., sits this exceptionally worldly Global cuisine Resto. It might be the best kept secret in Atlanta, but the people that frequent it aren't complaining because they keep on coming back. The ambience inside is very eclectic, both with contemporary and 1960s retro vibes. it would seem like the kind of place that an exPat would go and it's very dimly lit in there almost like a kind of speakeasy or cigar bar. But neither are the case here. There is also quite a James Bond theme if you make it to the restrooms and it generally has an air of mystery when you walk in. The food is no different. It is intentional as it could be about international food and culture. Stopped in here for date night, and it was a wonderful experience, both from a service standpoint and the dishes. Eric was a wonderful host and he provided a lot of context around the menu and what was popular at this time. The restaurant is currently running a Papua New Guinea inspired menu until the end of March and then it will switch over to Paraguay for the next 90 days. After that you'll just have to come back and see, but the idea is that there is a constant rotation of cuisine every 90 days. There is still the opportunity to order from their standard global menu, but if you are otherwise inclined, you may want to opt for the current feature like I did, because it won't be on there forever. The Papua New Guinea inspired menu was described by Eric as kind of a hybrid between Hawaiian, Polynesian Indonesian food, which was very exciting for me because I having just gone to Hawaii was very impressed by the food scene there. I had this delightful, lychee drink martini. I couldn't resist because Lychee is not something you always see on a menu for regional focus makes sense. There was another whiskey, drink with apricot and saffron. That was just simply exquisite and reminded me of like a a tropical old-fashioned lightened up. Next on the menu was the taro puff pastry with duck coffee and mushrooms, and it was spectacular. I had no idea that it was going to be as good as it was, but it was exceptionally delicious and light at the same time paired with a nice mixed green salad. The whole dish just worked, secondly, we had the ribs that were just all around, sticky goodness paired with a spicy, mignonette/vinegar sauce of sorts, a taste of the sweet-and-sour in this dish. It's also perfect for sharing because it comes full with six ribs or half rack individually cut. I'm going to have to do some more research on this type of cuisine, because the spices that were present in some of the dishes were very unique to my palate and or I had not had it in a very very long time and it was such a pleasant surprise. Next on the menu was the shrimp with some sort of sweet potato base, and it was also very spicy, and spice combo. It was delicious. Finally we opted for dessert and had this coconut bomb with blueberry sauce and it was a very nice finish, both refreshing and a delicately sweet end to another otherwise lavish meal. If you were looking for a unique date night experience in Atlanta, I highly recommend paying a visit to the consulate as you will never have a dull moment in this Resto. We were able to dine in at the last minute which was very appreciated. This establishment focuses on global dining which is pretty cool. They choose a country and focus on that particular cuisine . Paraguay was the focus. As sides we had asparagus and baked potato . The baked potato was one of the best baked potatoes I have had ever in life . What's not to love about a restaurant that has an international rotating menu and executes excellent service. Reservations are strongly encouraged. Restaurant validates parking, follow Google maps and you will be brought to their parking garage. The website provides detailed steps on how to locate the restaurant after leaving the parking garage. This was my third time dining here and once again no disappointments, everything was Amazing. I was pretty excited I was able to try the Seafood stew which was first served during the Ireland menu, I decided to have fish and chips at that time. Let's say, this is the best seafood stew I've had, loaded with a melody of seafood topped with a perfectly cooked grouper that melts in your mouth like butter. Packed full of flavor. Five stars for the soup, however I wasn't a fan of the bread served with it. I also had the potato balls which were so tasty, seasoned potatoes and the right amount of crispness. The matcha mousse was okay, it was good but a little underwhelming and  very thick, the biscotti crust was delicious and it looked beautiful. Not my favorite dessert from the restaurant. It was already pretty full so I definitely recommend getting a reservation - they're already pretty hard to get for your first choice. We got seated and ordered drinks. They're currently doing a Korean menu so I got the Korean Cannon - yogurt flavored soju, gin, lime, prosecco. Pretty good - nice and fresh taste. For my entree I opted for their resident menu item Lok Lak - the Khmer pepper beef. It was quite flavorful and VERY seasoned, though maybe to the point of being too salty. Our server recommended I get rice with it to cut some of that salt which was definitely helpful, though I definitely think rice should just be included. Overall, a very cute space designed to get you coming back again for their updated menu. The decor was very much like an embassy - I love a theme. There is an included 18% gratuity. Reserved private dining for 12 Lovely ambiance. This restaurant was carefully crafted into a historic vibe. It gives boutique museum in decor but a very nice size. The lovely decor is a perfect backdrop for photography. Our server Eric was great. He was very knowledgeable of all the offerings. We ordered almost one of everything from the Delicacies of Papua New Guinea menu. This satisfied those in our party who were vegetarian and not. The offerings were explosive bites of flavor. I needed no salt no pepper and I was left feeling that I'd just attended an upscale tasting from a chef who definitely knows about the flavor of food. It was so tasty and diverse in flavor which kept me wondering what would be passed to me next. We loved The Consulate. On my wife's birthday, no less. Beautiful decor, great service, validated parking, and above all excellent food. We were greeted at the door as if we were old friends. The decor is the sort of stuff diplomats collect around the world. And the menu reflects that as well with dishes from around the world with a different country featured each quarter plus a smattering of greatest hots from other countries. I can't recall our drinks except that they were tasty. We shared mango cucumber salad (Zambia) followed by octopus a la griglia (Italy), dry sautéed okra (Thailand) and ghalieh grouper (Iran). All were very good but the Iranian style grouper stole the show. It was a large filet of very fresh grouper that had been grilled and was smothered in an extraordinary sauce that enhanced the taste of the fish. It was worth driving across town for. Mariah, our very professional waiter, was great. Explained the dishes as if we were the first to ask. And thank goodness she didn't ask "how is everything tasting?" Great idea of the global menu - good to inspire interests in the audience about global food and cultures My favorites: - pepper beef - taro sorbet - lamb chop (the chops I had were too dry, but the dressing was special and memorable) - Ukrainian dumplings (the tables favorite) - cocktail was great!! Where I saw room for improvement - bbq duck Didn't not take a vantage of the texture of duck, and was overly salty in the heavy soy sauce. You cannot tell the difference between this dish and pulled pork, and the dressing definitely needs more refinement. - octopus salad The shell was of a fun presentation and fun to eat, but the flavor was nothing special and quite blend. read more

I must say that I'm conflicted about The Consulate. My son requested a "fancy dinner" for his birthday trip to Atlanta. I found The Consulate on Atlas Obscura and we both agreed the rotating menu picked by a globe was a really cool concept. So I quickly made a reservation. Then I started reading the reviews on Yelp, and honestly, the owner's responses to reviews (both positive and negative) is a bit off putting, so I went into this experience a bit more skeptical than I would otherwise. So positives first: 1) Our server Jordan was amazing. He was attentive and overall, wonderful to chat with. He really made the experience great for me and my son. 2) The decor is really great. It's honestly a generally cool place to hang out. 3) The food is well prepared. We tried the Boxty from the Ireland menu, my son had the Octopus (which he loved), and I had the Cuban egg roll, with a taro brownie for dessert. 4) Cost. This was a surprisingly reasonable meal. I went into the night thinking it would be much more expensive, but was pleasantly surprised by my bill. Perhaps I've been paying New England prices too much! Areas for improvement: 1) Emails responsiveness. I sent an email about a week ahead of my reservation to inquire about a special accommodation for my son's birthday. I never got a response, which I suppose was a response in itself. Overall, it's a inconsequential, but was a bit surprising given the activeness of the owner on social media. 2) Flavor. Given some of the reviews and the warnings on the menu regarding flavors: (Due to the premium costs of our very select ingredients, we cannot comp items simply because one "does not like it". Our flavors are bold, unique and globally inspired. If the dish was made in our error, we will gladly make any adjustments.) - I was expecting much stronger flavors in the dishes. Like I said, everything was well prepared, but I found the overall flavors quite mild. The flavors worked, but they felt over-restrained. So overall, I'm conflicted. I think the 4 is based primarily on service and that my son had an overall wonderful birthday experience. Whenever we visit Atlanta again, I would definitely consider coming back and trying the new menu... but while it's a great memory from our trip, I'm not sure I would say it's because of the food itself. read more

We didn't have a reservation (highly recommend) but we got lucky and there was a high top table for 2 in the bar. The country of the month was Vietnam, but they also have some staple items on the menu if you're not fond of the country cuisine. We shared appetizers and an entree, tried a featured bottle of white wine and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It's a small intimate venue that is so creative with there menu offerings. The first time I Went here was for my birthday several years ago and all I can say is YES YES YES. First off, I love the fact that there is an every changing menu but they still keep certain items as constants. You can stay in your comfort zone and stretch the possibilities in life. I Have tried multiple things but I always repeat these items below (and I always try new things which are no longer on the menu at this very moment so no need to torture you about how delectable something was that you'll never be able to get - I try to be a fair person)- Sauteed string beans Sauteed okra Veggie pancit The okra is some of the best okra I've ever had. Ever! And I eat okra every chance i get. The ambiance is whimsical, sexy and fun. It's Godfather meets feminine meets mad men and it's perfectly executed. The bathrooms are fun. The decor is great for pictures or for just feeling nostalgic. There is something that everyone will find entertaining. The servers know the menu and bar inside and out. It's the kind of spot where the server knows what you need before you need it (like whiskey) and they just give it to you and then your life is forever changed for the better. Get ready to be transported What an amazing idea for a restaurant. We really felt like we were in a completely different country. We love the idea of a changing menu and especially a restaurant that takes those with dietary restrictions into account even when traveling abroad. We love the decor and how it felt almost like a speakeasy when you walk into this place. Everyone was so gracious and helpful and the hostess gave us a great table to make sure we had a great date night The service was amazing. The drinks were amazing. And the food was excellent. We haven't really tried Japanese food but that was the menu that was being rotated this month. To change the menu every 90 days each time going to a different country. They have the resident menu as well which is taken from some of the most popular dishes over the last few months. We tried a few of the items but will definitely be back to try more. We can't wait to try a different country next month. If you're looking for a place to take a date looking out further probably the best restaurant we've been to in Atlanta. read more
