The Cookshack is the perfect spot when you are in the mood for spicy! Their Texas Hot flavor tastes very similar to the famous Nashville hot chicken. The Family Shack Packs are the perfect meals to take home. They come with a variety of different sides and all the different sauces you could ask for. On this visit, we ordered it with the 12 jumbo chicken tenders. When they say jumbo, they really mean it. Each tender is probably three times the size of a chicken tender from Cane's. Man is this place good. I came hear with some friends after seeing it with such high reviews online, and man does it live up to the hype. The restaurant has a cool, laid-back feel with both indoor and outdoor seating with some TVs spread around. I'm also not the best with spice (they asked what spice level I wanted for my chicken), so I ended up picking medium. In retrospect I wish I got a little spicier but medium was a solid spice level overall if you also aren't too great with spices! The food came out pretty quick as well so you know they're cranking out and grinding in the kitchen to get this food prepared (restaurant was packed), but it was honestly impressive how soon the food was to our table as it did seem warm and fresh. The chicken tasted warm and great, though the waffles were only around average I would say (they weren't anything special but they were solid). The portions were also HUGE! I could barely finish like half of my meal, so I took a nice box to go for leftovers and they held up well. Overall I would definitely come back here! Parking is a bit packed since it's part of a little strip of shops/restaurants, but the food is well worth it! The Cookshack doesn't have the best chicken tenders I've ever had, but they're plenty crisp, juicy and flavorful. I found the Texas heat to be the perfect amount of spice, while the medium was very mild spice suitable for those who don't enjoy spice very much. The ribs were surprisingly great, fall off the bone and succulent. What makes this place stand out is the service. The manager, Mike, gave us some AMF (the max spice level) chicken on the house when he saw us ordering it, in order to save us from ruining our meal. I would say this chicken is not safe for human consumption; it is mind blowingly spicy; one bite alone completely destroyed my mouth and stomach for the rest of the night. Luckily, Mike also gave us a complimentary ice cream sandwich to help us cool down and finish our meal. Amongst the sides, I'd highly recommend the Mac and sweet potato fries; but you really can't go wrong with anything here. I could have sworn I wrote a review for this spot, but here goes again. I visited on my day off, on a weekday lunch and ordered the 1/2 ribs and 2 tenders. I asked them to make the tenders very spicy, and they were indeed fairly spicy, but luckily its the type of spice that hits you initially then fades quickly. For the ribs though, I toned it down and asked for just medium spice. They are one of the many trendy places for Nashville hot chicken that's popped up in the Houston area over the last year, but not my favorite. Alright. So. Y'all ever watch any of Joshua Weissman's videos on YouTube? If so, let me tell you that this chicken is super "CWISPY" and would 100% be "Papa approved". Translation: this place serves some of the tastiest, crispiest, juiciest chicken I've had in Houston and deserves a round of applause for the prices and portions it does this at. Each dish gets 1 side and 1 sauce and the chicken portions are huge. Their regular and sweet potato fries were crispy, properly seasoned and not too oily. Also their shack sauce is amazing and as good if not better than Cane's. We got medium spicy chicken and waffles and medium spicy chicken sandwich, both of which could easily be eaten as 2 separate meals if you're not too hungry. The waffle was decent although the chicken was the true star. Each bite was crispy, juicy, and had a spicy kick to it. The chicken sandwich however was my favorite. The buns were lightly buttered and toasted and lathered with their shack sauce. The coleslaw was light and fresh and added another texture to each bite. Finally the chicken was a massive piece that was once again cooked to perfection. This is easily the Popeye's chicken sandwich killer! Also a quick note regarding the sandwich, if you plan on ordering to go, highly recommend asking them to put the coleslaw and sauce on the side. There is a lot of "juice" to this sandwich so you'll probably want to do this unless you want soggy buns. The restaurant was extremely spacious and had a rustic decor. I'll start by saying Cookshack is one of my favorite places. The service is usually phenomenal. Today the people working were just as friendly as ever. However, after picking up our order and bringing it home, we were missing our waffles and one of the orders was missing it's side. Of course by the time we got home and sat down to eat, they were closed and there was nothing we could do about our order. The drink machine was also broken. So only sweet tea and lemonade. I order to go the half rack and tenders meal that comes with a side and had to split it into 2 meals. 30 mins to home and the food handled the drive well. Ribs - 5 levels of heat tried lvl 3 medium, but definitely will take it up a notch next time. For me it had a bit too much sauce, but the meat was tender, juicy and fell off the bone. It reheated well the next day using a steam microwave method. Chicken - 5 levels of heat and I chose level 4 Texas Heat and I believe that is where it is at for me. First bite I got the flavor and thought well not much heat, but its one of them with every bite starts setting you on fire. Slow burn. Right amount of crisp, flavor, juiciness, and heat. So happened to be driving on Washington and stopped in during their soft opening. I tried the hot chicken sandwich in AMF and it was the friggin bomb! It's spicyyyy but not unbearable spicy ! The chicken was not greasy and not as messy as other hot chicken places. It was extra crispy as well!!! Def recommend if you don't want to wait in the long line at Micos. Real highlight of the show was the chicken. I cannot emphasize how amazing of an experience it was. The heat was intense in comfortably uncomfortable way, but it wasn't the kind of heat that takes away from the flavors of the meal - simply complimented every part of it. The best way to describe it tastes like raisin canes sauce. Their heat level does go up really hot so do be mindful of that. Tried their chicken and tenders without the spice and it's really good.
