Chose this restaurant because I had been told they make really good crab dishes and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Crab Melt and it was delicious! The seasoned crab meat was covered in melted cheddar cheese on thick Texas toast. The meal included two slices of toast with the crab meat and a generous side of fries. It was very filling and I ended up saving my second crab melt for lunch the next day. The fries were a bit overdone and I would have liked them crisper, but they still were decent. I decided to treat myself to lunch here yesterday. I was not happy with the food. The cream of crab soup had zero crabmeat, if there was I would have needed a microscope to have seen it. I thought that cream of crab soup was supposed to have some lumps of crab in it. Ok so we have been here several times over the years. We like the menu selection. Hands down, their crab cakes are great, the best I've had in Columbia, MD. I know there's a bunch of competition in the state, but as far as Columbia goes, they have it. That being said, let me talk about some other aspects. They are also known for their ribs. The ribs themselves are fine. This issue I have here is the BBQ sauce they use. They do not use a dark brown sweet Memphis style sauce one typically gets on ribs. They use a tangy red sauce that I find really over-powers the rib flavor. I wish they would offer, if not another choice of BBQ sauce, at least a dry option. Next time, I'll bring my own Sweet Baby Rays or equivalent and just ask for dry. Their Stable Onion Bloomer, appears as though it's dipped in straight flour. There is zero seasoning added to the flour mix and this leads to an extremely bland fried onion. Add some spices or something to add to the flavor here, similar to Outback's. Even the dip for the onion was void of any flavor/spice. Other than it being white (assuming mayo) I'm not sure what else was in it. The margarita I ordered was fine, although it was about 95% ice, so after about 4-5 sips it was gone. We'll most likely be back for crab cakes some time in the future, but maybe sooner if we find they make some improvements. BTW, the service was good. I went for happy hour. Ordered two different IPAs and neither tasted fresh. Got a smash burger, best part of the burger was the mayo and the fries that came with were nothing special. My son took me to dinner for my 60th birthday. We had looked forward to it because I had read so many good write ups on the restaurant. I should have checked the customer reviews. The food was second rate. My soft shell crab was half the size that it should have been (I mean it is August on the East Coast) and had no meat. The cobb salad was okay. My son's caesar salad was not crisp or plentiful and the cream of crab soup had the consistency of oatmeal. Once the soup cooled down, it ceased to even taste like crab. I'm all for hole in the wall spots and The Corner Stable can definitely be a hit or miss. This was my first time and we came for lunch - it took almost 35 minutes for our food to come out. A few coworkers have complained before that food generally takes long to come out.. So maybe it's normal for a wait time. I really like how they have many seafood options for a seafood lover like me. But the price can be hefty for the entrees. Since it was lunch (and no lunch menu) I really didn't want to blow over $20 which was what most of the entrees cost. I ended up with the Shrimp Salad Sandwich ($9.99), comes with a side a fries. It was good, but nothing to write home about. It was served cold and super messy with how watery the sauce was. Service was great but not so great on the food! I haven't been here in a while and this place use to have the best crab cakes. They have a sign posted "best crab cakes..." but no! Too much filler not enough crabmeat! Not happy! The three of us ordered crab cakes and all three were tasteless and filled with some type of breading! I ordered something called "the Chesapeake" which was suppose to consist of a crab cake on top of shrimp salad (shrimp salad was ok) with old bay remoulade sauce on a bun. Maybe she was annoyed that I was walking in with a small carry on? But regardless I sat down and my server greeted me right away. I read a review that said the crab cake was good. So I ordered a crab cake (it was a special today). It was a decent size crab cake and the taste was just whatever. It was meaty but it wasn't the best crab cake I had in my life and it was little on the greasy side. My mom swore by this place, so we checked it out after church this week. The number of selections was exciting and seemed fantastic. Unfortunately, the service was TERRIBLE. We were there for over an hour and a half and ignored by our waitress SO many times. There was another table that had ordered more than us, so she played favorites with them and ignored us. She also vented about her personal life and told tables that's why she had terrible service. It took over 20 minutes to get our check, and 20 more for her to get the card, which was on the table before we even got the check. I eventually gave it to the hostess, as I had my elderly grandmother with me, who needed to get home. The waitress very coldly brought our check back and I FINALLY got out of there. We were in the area for a wedding and decided to stop by the Corner Stable for a meal. It was later in the evening and the place wasn't too crowded. We were promptly seated and we began to examine the menu. There were a lot of choices, but we knew we were getting ribs and crab cakes. We ordered and the food came out in record time. Like seriously, about five minutes. We were hungry so we dug in. The flavors were alright, but everything tasted like it was just reheated a few minutes ago. The crabcake was a bit dry. Worst restaurant meal I've had in a long time. I was initially pleased to see the extensive draft beer list. But the first THREE draft beers I ordered were not available - even though they were not only on the printed menu, but also on an electronic sign over the bar. Not only did I not get my first three choices, but I had to wait a long time until the server returned with the bad news each time. I had a sandwich that included brisket and a crab cake. Wife & I visited on a Sunday afternoon. We had been to The Corner Stable in Cockeysville several times but not recently because it is not close by. Though The Corner Stable in Columbia has been here for a few months this is our first visit. They did a nice job of remodeling the facility the former restaurant had occupied for many years. We both had the Fried Chicken & Ribs combo. A huge chicken breast & a half rack of ribs. The chicken was crispy & hot, the ribs were of the fall off the bone variety. Two sauces for the ribs, hot & smoky for me, sweeter & mild for her. Prices were reasonable for ribs. From the looks of the menu, we will have to make several return visits to checkout more selections. They say the crabcake is a specialty. Service on a Sunday afternoon can be spotty in most places, but our waiter Evan was personable & responsive. Good food & good service is hard to beat! read more

We just ate at Corner Stable for the first time and were very impressed. The crab cakes were very good with lots of large lumps of crab meat. Definitely rivals some of the best in Maryland. Been here twice on a Wednesday for the Wednesday Crab cake special - Half pound colossal lump crab cake w/fries, $15.99. The crab cake is a nice size, no bread distractions just the crab cake. I consider myself a crab subject matter expert. The crab cake itself is crab filler with the jumbo colossal crab spread on top of the crab cake, broiled and served. The filler probably comes straight from fridge it doesn't get hot, just warm while the colossal on top is hot. This a decent cake for price; however you maybe a little disappointed if you are looking for lump crab meat throughout the crab cake. Fried are hot and fresh! read more

There is another "The Corner Stable" location (Cockeysville) I reviewed it favorably in 2009, and then later, after a negative experience less favorably in 2012 as part of a discussion on a seperate place. I prefaced with that bit, to get to this. Back when I was in college, I was tall, handsome, muscular, athletic, good at several sports, held a "practicing" black belt in karate. I was even no slouch with the ladies. I am 52 now. My son is in graduate school. I joke (self conciously) that he is the younger, better, upgraded version of me now. So it is with this location in Columbia versus its older, less agile, gently worn out father. This place even smelled good. The food, like at its run-down progenitor is solid, okay, American fare. There is nothing special. I'm not even sure what they need to do...a little butter, a little more spice/salt perhaps? It's okay, I would eat here again. It's just not "noteworthy". What this location has is "location". It's in one of those Columbia strip malls that doesn't look like one, more like a sprawling liberal arts college- clean brick, well-repaired sidewalks, nice cars in the spacious parking lot.
