If I could give Half stars, this establishment would have received 2.5 stars. Despite the expansive and creative menu, the food or at least the dishes we had for brunch were ordinary at best. The coffee was not. The coffee or what they served and said was coffee was warm brown dishwater. I had a second cup thinking what they just served me was stale bottom of the pot and it might get better. It did not. Ok enough, let's get to a positive. The environment was pleasant New England, clean lines, muted colors and inviting. Ok back to the food. The Brioche French Toast and Frittata were ok good, like you'd get at a good diner. The service was good, especially the younger blond manager. Our server was outwardly pleasant but I detected a bit of attitude. We have enjoyed numerous dinners at Cottage. The varied menu allows for sharing many small dishes or indulging in a large main dish. We like to order 4-5 smaller dishes to experience the seasonal changes in the menu. All are excellent and all seem to have unique ingredients and superior execution of the dishes. We really miss Le Farm, but had heard good things about The Cottage and thought it would be fun to try it for a birthday dinner. Not so much. We arrived to find the place freezing cold and smelling strongly of bleach. I'm all for clean, but yuck. Took about half an hour for the odor to dissipate. My glass of Willamette Pinot Noir set the tone: Yes, it was wine, but there was absolutely nothing special about it. We all got different appetizers and shared; only the sea urchin toast got a thumbs-up. While the the pork belly itself yummy, the "scallion" pancake it topped was a thick, soggy mess to start with and -- even after making ample use of the sauces-- almost taste-free. Pork bun condiments were similarly flavorless (even the kimchi was bland, as if they'd forgotten even the vinegar!). The spicy octopus lacked -- you guessed it -- spice. Main courses were equally lackluster. The lobster spaghetti tasted like factory "lobster flavoring" and contained little actual meat, though in fairness there was a lot of pasta. The $45 rib eye came PRE-CUT (!) into five little 1x3" pieces! The salmon portion was equally paltry and was accompanied by what appeared to be the standard 1,000 Island Dressing "sauce" and maybe one piece of asparagus that had been thinly sliced into long slivers. We all agreed that the person who ordered the Nettle Sachetti had won the lottery: The sage-brown butter was a good pairing with the bitter nettles; the pasta sachets were nice and thin, and the portion size was normal. Not an outstanding dish but, unlike all the others, satisfying. And please, what is with taking the hamburger off the menu on weekends? A good burger is one of my favorite out-to-dinner indulgences, and, given how excellent Le Farm's burger was, something I'd have thought The Cottage would endeavor to replicate. I'd pay $25 for a great burger, so what's the problem? We couldn't help but hear similar dismay from another party nearby, so it's not like we missed the memo. Bad enough to have online menus sans pricing: You should also alert folks you limit the selection! At this point we didn't have a lot of hope, so we only ordered two desserts. I can't even remember what the bread pudding was supposed to have tasted like (I would have sworn in was just bread), and the chocolate peanut-butter dessert was all peanut butter. Both came with what tasted like cheap, store-brand ice cream: Strong vanillin (vs. vanilla) flavoring that overwhelmed the whole dessert. No bread was offered. No coffee was offered. We went straight from The Cottage to another restaurant in town, where two of us ordered more food. I will say that the service was excellent. Friendly and professional staff with excellent timing. I rarely say this but everything I ate was phenomenal! I had the steak tartar, crab toast, lobster spaghetti, spicy scallop nigiri, and the blueberry Pavlova (big enough to share). The steak tartar was served on toast which made it so much easier to eat as well as being delicious. Some crab toasts forget to let the crab shine and not be weighted down by sauce. Their crab toast is the perfect balance of crab, sauce, and toast. The lobster spaghetti looks heavy but the sauce is light and nuanced with sea urchin and sweet delicate bites of lobster. The spicy scallop nigiri is by the piece and a perfect bite. I'm not a person that can tolerate spicy food but again it was just the right amount to compliment the scallop. The blueberry Pavlova is on the large side so great to share. The cocktails are delicious with fresh not out of a bottle juices and syrups. read more

I feel quite mixed re this restaurant. We shared squid with broccoli (too salty), Lobster burratta (excellent but spare), Waygu buns which were great - could have done with something better with the fried potato accompaniement, Squash pasta and duck fried rice which were both another salt bomb. We each had cocktails btw which were incredible! Most of these dishes were over seasoned and way too salty. And for the portion size way too overpriced. Happy I tried it and would love to return for a cocktail but I will dine elswhere. read more

I don't know, guys. I saw all the glowing reviews below mine and I seriously hesitated to write this as I wondered if I was the only one who feels this way, but my husband walked away with the same assessment too so I'll share it. This place is tiny and cramped and the noise levels rise to the point where you either choose to yell your thoughts across the table or resign yourself to sit quietly and eavesdrop on other peoples' conversations. I got tired of yelling my feelings to my husband so I just ate my food and listened to the table next to me talk about their vacation plans. The food is a curious mix of lots of different cultures which sounds cool but in practice it's muddled and confusing. I had Asian steam buns filled with meat, Moroccan carrots, Italian pasta and some other stuff I've chosen to forget about. It was all just 'meh' and when the check came I was shocked. It was as expensive as Le Farm, the swanky high end restaurant which used to occupy the same building, which is something I wasn't expecting given the discrepancy in the quality of the food. I went home with a queasy stomach from eating all those uncomplimentary dishes together and an uneasiness about the amount of money I spent on an un-enjoyable meal. read more

First: great service. With that out of the way the food needs addressing or rather undressing. We had four dishes. All of which were so "imaginative" that I felt nostalgic for simplicity. The foie gras was a molten mess, the sea urchin a confusion flavors that seemed to be trying to disguise it's innate qualities; ended up tasting like unwashed laundry (I'm guessing). The main courses were excellent, steak and duck, as were the wine choices. My overall disapproval is summed up by the selection of find; all funky and aromatic. Came here for brunch and was pleasantly surprised. We were not expecting the Japanese flair to the menu. Everything listed on the menu was so unique, we wanted to try it all. I opted for the pancake with roasted almonds and it was amazing! It was one large pancake that reminded me of an almond cake with a hint of citrus. It wasn't too sweet like traditional pancakes but hit the spot. We also tried the crab cake Benedict and it had allot of fresh crab meat. Perfect! All super fresh ingredients. Wow!!!! Just got home from a fabulous meal at a the Cottage! The food was unbelievable. I highly recommend the crispy tuna, brisket sticky buns, truffle ravioli, and beef cheeks! Chef Brian Lewis was there and I was blown away by his hospitality. He made sure to check in with all customers and was very involved in the kitchen. My husband and I were leaving the restaurant and he followed us out to introduce himself. It was so nice!!! The service and food are fantastic. I am missing my meal from tonight already! Unfortunate that I have to give only two stars. Service was pretty terrible. After about 30 minutes since we put in a drink order, the waitress returned to tell us she was sorry but they couldn't make the cocktail with no actual explanation which was pretty bizarre considering it was one of their signature cocktails. Then our appetizers showed up over an hour later. The appetizers were great but then sadly we were very disappointed with the main courses. Our eggs Benedict were beyond undercooked. When we suggested they were undercooked to our waitress, she rather rudely explained that's just how poached eggs were. I have had poached eggs plenty of times and I can confidently say that these were not normal. Not a single one of the three people that ordered the eggs Benedict actually ate the dish. Had a really solid meal here opening week. I was a fan of Elm when this chef was there and that quality carriers over here with a slightly more homey menu. The decor is a slight upgrade to Le Farm and makes good use of the space available. Service was good. To start, I had the fluke tartare and one wagyu brisket steamed bun. The fluke tartare was very fresh and full of flavor with a nice avocado puree, some fresh avocado slices and a meyer lemon kosho. The brisket that came with the wagyu steamed buns was awesome - very flavorful and tender and came with some kimchi and a potato. The kimchi was good but the potato was a bit flat - one of the only misses of the meal. My dining partner had the duck toasts which was a duck terrine on a piece of toast with an endive based salad with a tasty vinaigrette. We both had the same entree, a delicious short rib cottage pie was awesome and tasted equally delicious as a leftover the next day. The meat was succulent and not too fatty which sometimes is an issues with short rib. The parsnip puree was great and the side carrots were a good mix of harder bitter carrots and soft sweet carrots. The dessert was a chocolate peanut butter sundae which sounded a bit boring but I'm glad we had it since it was a perfect combination of slightly soft and not too sweet chocolate ice cream with a crunchy peanut butter cream. Definitely a good place to celebrate a special occasion, which in my case was a rare date night, since I have an infant. I was drawn to how exotic the selection was, but definitely a little nervous given there are no prices on the website for different menu items. It's a small and definitely cozy place - larger parties are seated separately from the bar and 2-person tables, which there were 4 by the window. When we first got there i was a bit nervous because the tables were super close together and it felt like we were almost seated with other couples. But as people started coming, there was enough background noise to not notice as much. The spicy squid and broccoli was a standout choice when it came to flavors and textures. The brisket steam buns was pretty average - would't recommend. The lobster spaghetti was heaven - a little spicy and wonderfully flavored. Probably my favorite. Duck fried rice was also really delicious. With 2 glasses each the bill came to $170, which was definitely twice what we usually pay for a dinner out, but still glad we treated ourselves to a nice dinner out. Sorry, but I can't agree with the other reviewers here and was truly disappointed with the Cottage. Especially after the time after time of an amazing experience at Le Farm which once occupied this place. Let me start by saying I'm an easy to please type patron so I'm not to be confused with some Fairfield County folks that fancy themselves to be a critic of Food and Wine magazine. Unfortunately their credit card machine blew up the night we were there so I think this threw the restaurant in some sort of tailspin. The staff had to spend the majority of their time sorting this out so the basic things such as appetizer dishes being left forever on the table after finished, water running out etc really suffered. That said our server Melanie was lovely, and I understand how she may have had her hands tied with whatever the CC machine hassle was causing and spilling over into basic service. Spicy tuna starter was barely ok, with the grade of the tuna poor as it wasn't properly skinned so the gristle was still attached making it tough to cut, and tougher to chew when missed. For a second course had the lobster pasta. The pasta was soggy and almost immediately turned to a soupy consistency. The amount of lobster was negligible and taste was lost in an over abundance of spice. Fail. Had the cod for entree and again it was just blah. A true cod steak filet would have worked much better in this dish and I was disappointed with the size and texture of the fish. My wife had the scallop entree and though the scallops were tasty, you simply have to include more than 4 small scallops if you're going to charge nearly $30. I'm not the type of person that gives a place one star from a singular poor experience. Unless it was a unmitigated disaster, which the Cottage wasn't. And that's because of the fore mentioned Melanie battling some adverse circumstances , and the peanut butter and chocolate dessert being without question the best desert I have ever had in my life. We went there for my hubby's birthday. Good that we were not too too hungry when we got there because the portion was tiny, as tiny as most pretty Westport women. The birthday boy ordered the four course dinner, I ordered two appetisers and my daughter lobster spaghetti. The four course dinner contained lobster tempura, tuna sashimi, two foie gras dumplings and four tiny 30 day aged steak strips. The appetisers I ordered were sea urchin toast (really good!) and spicy squid salad. The squid salad was a bit too salty and I had to ask for some bread to go with it. The lobster spaghetti was tasty but a bit too rich! The dining experience was like at a quality food sampling. The atmosphere was fabulous but the noise level was high as I could hardly hear what my hubby and daughter were saying. You may want to eat a bit before or after dining there. read more
