I just love this beach-side stretch of Washington Blvd and Cow's End seems to set the tone. The smoothies are very original and tasty. The sandwiches, which seem to not be very popular, are very good. The vibe here is just very cool and stimulating. The inside is dark and warm and the outside is, well, Venice Beach. Plus, the line was out the door (while Starbucks was empty!!). But, alas, the coffee at Cow's End did not live up to the awesomeness of its location and atmosphere. My white mocha had a really funny taste. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing... ? My boyfriend, on the other hand, had a smoothie, which was pretty good. It tasted really fresh and natural. The atmosphere and location do make Cow's End worth trying. It's a block from the beach, and definitely a great place to people-watch. I've been coming to Cow's End every day for about a week now while I wait for my home office to arrive in a moving truck. I have to say this place is pretty much THE perfect coffeeshop. They have plenty of places to sit with plugs everywhere and FREE wifi. They have an insane selection of coffee, tea and smoothies, I have tried at least one drink from all of these categories and they have all been awesome. While The Cow's End Cafe has a very unique style of decor, and layout, my overall experience here was just A-OK. The night was winding down, and at around 9:00PM a group of worn out college students saw a red building that seemed to offer warmth and comfort from the oncoming cold, and the smell of coffee enticed them further. Those enticements were to be fulfilled. Upon Arriving, my group split up. Some went upstairs to check out the couch/lounge area as well as finding us seating. The other half waited downstairs in line and poured over the immense menu selection. I mean, the selection is huge! With so many interesting options, we found it slightly hard to pick just one. After about 10 minutes of pondering, we all settled on what we wanted and began ordering. The two men working behind the counter were busy at work taking and making orders so it was slightly difficult to get their attention. However, once it was gotten, the man working the cashier was super friendly and nice and even helped out a friend with her order. The store doesn't seem to have a call system to let you know if your drinks are ready, or at least, we didn't see or hear something like that, so we left one person downstairs while the rest went upstairs. That person was me. After getting our drinks, and warming up, we sat at a table right by the stairs. People came and went but they paid our group no attention, so that says something about the locals that frequent the place. We wanted to check out the couch room, but didn't want to move the furniture around. The drinks themselves are just A-OK. The coffee wasn't to die for, but it wasn't weak or poor. My friend got a smoothie and it was loaded with strawberries, just as advertised. And then my other two friends shared an Oreo espresso shake, which they said was amazing. My Vita C smoothie was not too sweet, which I liked. It had a little kale in it, which made the overall coloring look a little gross but I got over that pretty quickly. It was also a fair price point, especially for a touristy area. You could tell it was a standby for locals but also a great stop for tourists. I think the owner just enjoys running this place so you can trust there's loyalty and dedication blended into your smoothie, too. I wouldn't go out of my way to stop by here for a smoothie or a coffee drink (I tried my friends and it was ultra sweet, unlike my smoothie) but I wouldn't regret it on a sunny day in Venice. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite coffee shops on the west side. They really do make one of the best chai tea lattes I've ever had. I have spent numerous nights here with friends sipping drinks and playing scrabble. There are a lot of crazies walking by this place, which makes it a prime location for people watching. The upstairs areas are often inhabited by students with laptops, textbooks, and highlighters a plenty, so if you're there to socialize, I suggest the downstairs/outside seating. This is the local hot spot by the Venice Pier when it comes to good coffee. They have it all. A dozen different roasts, blended drinks, smoothies, snacks, sandwiches, breakfast and more. Great prices for what you get. Coffee is great and the service is always good. We like to ride our bikes over here for breakfast sometimes. Come too late and the line will be out the door but its worth the wait and moves fast. Must say that I'm not really a fan of the microwaved eggs, but overall the menu and food is pretty darn good. Great spot for people watching if you sit outside and everyone brings their dog. If you want a little peace and quiet you can sit upstairs. If I'm in Venice Beach, you better believe I'm going to Cow's End. They have a variety of sandwiches, coffee and smoothies. When I go, I always get the Health Nut sandwich, which tastes amazing and comes with a small side salad. I've tried the Acai smoothie and I believe it was called a Funky Monkey, which were phenomenal. The staff are pretty chill and down to earth and have always been friendly. It's cash only, but they have an ATM in the restaurant and there's also one just outside the door by Cold Stone. What I didn't like is that although the establishment is two stories, the seating is very limited, their wifi is sporadic and they take FOREVER to prepare your order!! I come here for coffee and to work occasionally. Been here many times. I don't really stray from my normal order which is a double americano. I don't have much to say about this place except for that they make their coffee the old school way. They are truly real baristas. They know how to tamp and all that jazz. Their machines are not just push-a-button-and-put-in-coffee type of machines. What is also cool is that they are super fast. I came here to meet an old work colleague for coffee a couple weeks ago and thought it was okay. It was a Saturday morning and the place was totally jammed with people, a testament, I suppose, to their popularity (or perhaps their proximity to the beach). I don't like that it's cash only. Maybe it's just me (it's not), but I hardly pay anything with cash these days.. All I can think of that I pay for with paper is the occasional valet, and even that's totally inconvenient. But maybe I'm being whiny. We managed to snag a table outside. It was nice being pretty close to the ocean and we took a quick stroll over there afterward. A downside was that parking sucked big time. I was able to grab a metered spot but my friend was forced to park in the lot right against the water. Yikes! Not the cafe's fault, but still a factor. We were there for coffee, not smoothies, and the coffee was A-OK. They have soy milk and almond milk, so vegans and lactose intolerant folks can enjoy. Wait time wasn't bad, especially considering how crowded it was. Overall, thought this place was fine. No fireworks, but I'd come back if I were at that specific beach for some other reason. read more

The sandwiches are good, although I'd recommend you stick to the meat options because the vegetarian ones are lackluster at best. I love that they will give you a little salad ven with to-go sandwiches, and their selection of cheeses and meats is great. The coffee is often cold, but good. The service stinks big time. I don't know if they're going for the "we're locals and we're chill" type of vibe, but 45 minutes for a sandwich is unacceptable. Especially when, like last Sunday, the place was empty. Worst service ever and I gave them several chances too! The coffee is also pretty weak and the place is catered more towards tourists. Too bad, because they have quite an elaborate menu and they will always have customers due to their excellent location right near the beach. What you guys aren't realizing is that you guys have at least 6 people on a daily basis that are actual "regulars" here. We buy food and coffee all day long while working, studying, and relaxing. On Thursdays, you allow this relaxing institution to be infiltrated by a dozen (or more) children to do some obnoxious "sing-along". Keep in mind, you are NOT making any money at this. They come in, take over the entire upstairs, driving out the regulars, and I have yet to see any of the parents buy 1 single thing. Not even a coffee. This is a unique gem of a place on Washington Blvd in Venice. My friend took me here on my first visit to Venice and I haven't been able to stop going back. Its hard to miss the location because there is a large end of a cow sticking out from the top of the building. The drinks are good and they have a very tempting selection of snacks. Be aware that it is cash only! There are several comfy places to hang out. This is the perfect place to just relax and people watch. I've seen some impressive people hanging out here. read more

Wow so i seriously came in here by accident.. nature was calling and the bathroom at C&Os across the street wasn't really up to par, so i ran across the street, so i heard from the hostess that the bathroom was really clean. Well i didn't want to just go inside to use the bathroom, so i bought something, i ordered the Ice Soy Chai, and let me tell you, its probably one of the best chais i ever had. Perfect flavor, it was delicious. The coffee shop itself was pretty nice, funky styling, very "beachy", if you know what i mean. The guy working at the counter was really nice, made a good convo within a couple mins. One of the busiest places on the block! People constantly going in and out. And there's always a line. The coffee was good. As for the food, I tried the breakfast burrito. It tasted healthy, and pretty plain to me. I would not get this dish again. The place has wifi, which was great. You can sit outside and browse the web or do work and also people watch. The sucky part about it is that if you sit outside, there's no outlet to plug your laptop in. Also, this place is definitely pet friendly. I sat outside and saw so many dogs walk by. I've been in the area for a few years now and just today decided to give it a try. I've walked by many times, and even walked in a time or two, but something about the vibe made me walk back out. Not sure if it was the long line, the perpetually almost empty baked goods case or what, but it's not a place that I feel welcomes you in and makes you feel at home. That said, I've walked by and noticed how good the food looked. Today I really felt like I needed a sandwich for lunch, so I ventured over just past lunch time. I was in luck, no line, but wasn't sure which register to go to for a sandwich. Someone told me to go to the coffee register. I used the do-it-yourself sandwich order form to get exactly what I wanted. They served it to eat in even though I wrote to go...once I got it home, the sandwich was just what I ordered, and decent sized too. It was great! Pretty dope. Place was NOT too warm like others suggest. I was actually a tad chilly. I found a cozy table upstairs (I wasn't sitting where the red furniture was so perhaps that's where all this said heat resides) I ordered a cup of banana black tea which was satisfactory. The worker was pleasant and the internet speed was sufficient. My only set back was the parking. It was $2 every 2 hours and if you're a coffee shop sitter like I am...I had to pack up and cross the street to refill the meter. I know this is a typical task in la but I'd happily add another star to this review if they only had their own private lot.
