I've been coming here since they opened up in Kaimuki. There has been about 2 different chefs within the past year since they were open and i got to try the food from both chefs. This restaurant is located in the old Town restaurant. I thought it was interesting that it was half a restaurant and half barber shop within one building and always thought there would be hair everywhere and flying in the food. But in fact, there is a glass door that separates both establishments. There is free parking behind the building - which is pretty rare for Kaimuki! I dined in this past visit with another dog mom and fellow yelp elite. They prepared 2 steaks and marrow for them! (HOW LUCKY!) Our dogs were in doggy heaven. They offer this for all dogs by the way at no additional charge. We dined outdoors at night, so it was neat that their menu had a light underneath so you could see the menu easily. For our appetizers we ordered the Brussel Sprouts, Bone marrow, and duck fat fries. We actually got pretty full from this as the portion was really large that we barely ate our entrees. For our entrees we ordered the Pork chop and the pasta special with shrimp and clams. Too full for dessert and it was definitely a chilly night, so we opted not to get any. We came here to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint! It's a fairly small restaurant with a nice outdoor seating area. It's also attached to a barber shop. The food here was amazing! We decided to order a bunch of different dishes to try a variety of them, but the serving sizes were larger than we expected. We had way too much food! My favorite dishes were definitely the bone marrow and the duck fat fries. I also really enjoyed the corn and smoked meat. The mashed potatoes were really smooth and buttery. One piece of lamb I had was a little dry but the other piece was cooked so perfectly. Everything was just amazing and fairly priced for the portions, especially for a steakhouse. They also gave me free ice cream for my birthday! This restaurant can easily become a regular spot for steak and apps with how good it was! read more

An exceptional steak place in kaimuki who woulda knew? Michelob ultra on tap? What??? I gotta get out more. Wait lighted menus? This place is full of surprises and you can cut your hair during the day. I wonder if you can order food during your haircut? Kaimuki is reeling in the best restaurants yo, seriously. Now you don't need to go to crazy busy Waikiki or battle an army of bums in downtown, of course you might miss out on an insane hungry Hawaiian instagramable bum peep show moment, but now you don't need to watch out for sun baked body fluids or other body expelled land mines for a 5 star steak house. The food has a nice smoky taste to it. Everything is done up well. They got the best prime rib on the island- it's the smoky point that takes it to that next level. Oysters were on point. Even the little things like the buttered grilled bread that came with the bone marrow was super delish. But the piece de resistance was the duck fat fries. I once overheard my uncle telling someone that's why the French fries are really good in France because they fry it in duck fat and I believe! Tres magnifique! Major addicting. I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday; we were seated at the bar and funny enough- the bartender had the exact same birthday! Felt serendipitous. We had reserved a prime rib for the night with our reservation, or well I thought I had. When we got to the restaurant, they said they hadn't received confirmation for the reservation (we only made it the day before) and technically all prime rib reservations had to be more than 24 hours. Despite their policy, they were considerate enough that they had saved us one! Going into the reservation that was what we were most looking forward to, but my favorite ended up being the ribeye. I absolutely loved the crust on the ribeye and all the flavor from the being grilled over the live kiawe fire. It definitely blew my expectations on the difference that would make to the taste of it. The brussel sprouts were a hit for me, nice texture and different flavor than most places and what I make myself too. I was not a fan of the Duck Fat Fries, didn't taste any different than standard fries, made me wish we had gone with the truffle mashed potatoes instead. Overall, we ordered the prime rib, ribeye, crispy Brussel sprouts, duck fate fries and mushroom medley, it was all a good size where we both had some leftovers to eat the next day. We ended the meal with dessert, the mudpie like dessert and the server was sweet and put a candle in it to celebrate (fyi no complementary/discounted dessert). I guess everyone's seated outside, it was a chilly and blustery experience because of the wind advisory tonight. Thank goodness when you open the menu, the pages are backlit which makes it much easier to read outside (even though the seating areas are pretty well lit). it would've been a challenge with my poor vision without the backlit menus. We started with the prawn appetizer. They were crisped to the point that you could chew through the shell, so I could enjoy the head without peeling it. It was pretty tough, and I probably got more fiber than I counted on tonight from the shells. It was also pretty spicy with the double whammy of chili oil and wasabi. Me and my daughter shared the entrée, rack of lamb which comes à la carte. We got two sides, garlic mashed potatoes and seared broccolini. We asked for the lamb medium rare, which is exactly what we got the chimichurri it came with was really good and the lamb was cooked perfectly. The truffle mashed potatoes was excellent and worth its weight in gold. The only miss was the broccolini, it was seared as promised...not too crunchy and not too raw, but the fourth piece I had tasted burnt, with that terrible aftertaste as if it picked up the black stuff from the burnt part of the pan. For dessert we had an excellent crème brûlée, it came in a really shallow and wide ramekin which allowed for maximum crispy crust which made the pleasant crunchy sound when you broke it with a spoon! Underneath was creamy goodness! The meal was a value, considering that we only had to get one entrée which was large enough for two to share. Even without the appetizer, one entrée and two sides were plenty for two of us because even with both of us attacking everything we only ate 2/3 of everything and took the rest home. I recommend this place for high-quality, great seasoning, and generous portions. save room for dessert! read more

@Rani R brought me here for my birthday this year. Located at the former Town location, we requested the first reservation of the evening, and enjoyed the outdoor seating. Not gonna lie, we still prefer outdoor dining to being too close to others indoors. They made a decent effort of separating the bustling corner activity from most of the tables, but we happened to be seated at the table at the very edge of the lanai, where there wasn't much "screen". We could see all of the vehicle and foot traffic, which took away from the ambiance--especially the neighboring hair salon's outdoor spotlight, which was shining in our eyes. It was 5 pm and there was no reason for it to even be on! If there was just a little more screening at that back table, it would have been nice. The food however, was amazing. We started with some duck fat fries, crispy Brussels sprouts (the Manoa honey butter sauce is incredible!) and Charred Romaine Caesar salad. They were amazing! We also had the bone marrow--we felt like the chimichurri overpowered the marrow, which normally has a great taste on its own. Then we had the Paniolo style prime rib. It was my first time having that, and OMG, it was a-MAZE-ing. I love prime rib, but the charred finish is another level. There was tons of food and leftovers. Visited The Cutlery fairly recently to celebrate a birthday. I just love that they are dog friendly! We had made reservations for an outside table & so we could bring our dog, Hina. We arrived right on time for our reservation. Upon stating my name to the hostess, she mentioned that they did not have outdoor seating but I could she would be able to seat me indoors instead. I told her I had a dog so it would need to be an outside table. It ended up working out as she was able to clear & set a table outside for us! We had the furthest table back which was great for us since our dog would not keep still lol. We were greeted by our server who took our drink order. I stuck with water for once & my boyfriend had an old fashioned which he found just a bit too sweet to his liking. The drink also took a fairly long time to come out. Here's what we got: - Oysters: were on the bigger side (can't remember what type) but was very good, especially with the chili pepper water. - Shishito peppers: super yummy, and piled high! We didn't get any spicy ones. - Pulehu Tako: extremely smoky. Good flavor but didn't care for the texture of the tako. - Fire Roasted Bone Marrow: Burnt to a crisp, marrow had basically melted away. The table beside us was raving about it though so I think we just got a bad batch. - Porterhouse for 2: BOMB AF YALL. $125 for melt in your mouth amazing meat. Filet mignon is already my favorite, this was done perfectly! I love how it comes with some flakey salt to sprinkle to your liking Added benefit: they give your doggo steak too! Hina turned into a crazy monster once we started feeding her steak lol. We were pretty stuffed from dinner & initially declined a birthday amenity, but eventually the staff kindly brought out heaping scoops of ice cream for us. The steak & doggy steak definitely were the star of the show here. I would definitely return to The Cutlery to try the bone marrow & other items again since I think we just didn't get a good batch. Gotta give props where props is due. Solid steak & chops. Sides were good and enough to share. In fact had enough to take home. Also had grilled tako and mashed potatoes which were yummy as well. The pork chops had good kiawe smoke flavor, moist and the gravy was a great complement. Service was great. We had last minute reservations and we were seated at the bar. Regardless, they took care of us just fine. This isn't the traditional steakhouse vibe but I totally loved the neighborhood steakhouse feel. From our bar seats we could see a little piece of Waialae Ave through the rollup doors. Ambience was perfect. No loud music. Easy to have a conversation with my dinner date. Came here on a Friday night foe my girl's birthday. She ordered the prime rib and I ordered the chicken. We had the pulehu taco for pious, it is the bomb. It is soo soft and flavorful. Ahe said the prime rib is soo soft and no need the extra au jus. The chicken was nice and tender and flavorful. The crisy Brussel sprouts were excellent and you can taste the Manoa honey. I also had 2 old fashioned . The service is splendid. Most definitely will be back. I like the fact that this place is so casual, not like a regular steak house. I have gone to this place twice since they opened up and every time I went it just kept getting better! I reserved a table using OpenTable and the main reason I chose this place was because they are PET FRIENDLY and I know some restaurants are "pet friendly" in the sense they all your furbabies to be there with you, but this place took it to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. When we got there they set up our table and even had me look at the table to see if it is accommodating for my dog. My dog is 40 pounds and he is pretty timid but they provided us the PERFECT table where we had a lot of space from the other parties that were dining there. The girl was super sweet and helped us get settled. The menu has a variety of different dishes to cater to everyones needs. I personally got the Oxtail Ragu. I have never imagined oxtail other than anything in a soup, but they implemented the oxtail so perfectly into the ragu pasta. The meat just slid off the bone and it was super tender. The portion size was HUGE and it was only $35 which I thought was a very big win for me. We also had the truffle mashed potatoes which were super creamy and they did not hold back on the truffle. There is not even a scale to rate our dinner as it has completely exceeded every expectation I had. We ended the night with a mudpie and it was the perfect way to complete our meal. THIS ISNT EVEN THE BEST PART. My poor dog was just watching us enjoy our ONO dinner and the waitress knew exactly that. She offered us STEAK and water for our dog! The best part was IT WAS FREE. Let me tell you, when she brought out the steak bites, I WANTED it. My dog swallowed the whole thing in seconds and licked the plate till the plate itself was completely gone. Heck no, they have fine dining prices with the worse service I've experienced in memory. Ordered the prime rib and what was supposed to take half an hr came out in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, we waited another 30 minutes for the sides and up to an hour for other main courses. Terrible experience. The sole waiter could not handle. I've cut off red meat this year but since it was my bf birthday, I decided to just cheat one night so we could share. We ordered the Porterhouse for two and boy, the slices of meat were massive! I was only able to eat three pieces because of how thick each cut was and probably bc my body not used to eating meat again. Presentation was beautiful and the kiawe flavor was there. We also got the Caesar salad, bone marrow, truffle mash potatoes, duck fat fries and Brussel sprouts (yes it's a lot for two people but we were celebrating lol). ALL SO GOOD! Our server mentioned to us it's family size style and she was not wrong. Def had enough to take home. All the apps and sides we ordered I would recommend trying - duck fat fries for sure tho! Though the food was really delish, I knocked a star and a half because I wish we had a better experience. It started storming outside and it was leaking water a lot in the middle of our table. We asked our server if we could move but she said we couldn't. She offered to pull our table out but based on the layout and size of the table, we would've been in the middle of the walkway/entering area. I know it's not the servers fault and our table was big enough for our food... but the fact we had to move all our food on one side and eat and talk while water is splashing in front of us was so annoying and a buzzkill. She gave us a heads up that entrees might take a little while, but appetizers should be good. I didn't mind, but it's always a good thing to be notified about important things like that. Our server came to help us shortly after. Didn't have to wait long. First thing she asked was whose birthday it was. Loved that she acknowledged it right away (: The ice cream was delicious! For appetizers, we had the garlic clams! It was pretty good (: The clams and the garlic bread go so well together! For entrees, I got the New York steak (: Wow! Was really looking forward to our reservations as the date got closer. Arrived about 5 minutes early and was seated. Our server Chassidy did a good job of taking our order and we started receiving our items after a short wait . . . drinks, apps, and then entree shortly after we were done with our apps. We tried the bone marrow and oysters, both were great! The chilipepper water with the oysters was a winnah! Had the duck fat fries and ribeye. The steak was perfectly with a nice hint of smoke. Incredible meal. Tight parking situation managed by a total parking expert. Totally unexpected steakhouse discovery for me - I visit family 2x a year and am "rediscovering" Kaimuki. That said - if there's an area that needs work, it's the service - there's too much demand for a skeleton crew. At the end, it's a tall order to spend over $60 an entree for a work-in-process dining experience. Ultimately, the food will bring you back. Your faithful world food travelers stopped off at a new place, at least to us, The Restaurant at the Cutlery (TRATC) in Kaimuki. Occupying the location that used to be Town, TRATC is an eclectic space with a barber shop / salon on one end, a nice bar on the other end and a couple of high top tables inside. The main seating is outside, surrounding the periphery of the place. We opted to sit inside to keep cool and have more table space. We started with a bottle of 2018 Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot; a big, bold red with ripe fruit from Jenny Wagner, whose father founded Caymus Vineyards. This is not your typical Merlot; IMO this is the "best buy" on the wine list. Ah, bone marrow ... whenever we see bone marrow on the menu it's a "must have" and this one did not disappoint. Served with toast and spicy onions, the marrow was rich and unctuous ... I could have used a shot of brandy or cognac to wash the remnants of the marrow onto the toast. We added the Charred Caesar Salad; this was very good. The charred Romaine elevated the ubiquitous Caesar salad to something more ...a few croutons, shaved Parmesan and halved cherry tomatoes accented the Romaine. For our entrée, we opted for the Nakamura For Two, a GIANT slab of prime rib, 32oz, served with bone marrow au jus and creamy horseradish. Perfectly seasoned and on the rare side; this almost 3" thick slice of meat was so tender and one of the best prime ribs I've had. On the side we ordered Crispy Brussel Sprouts ... split in half, it was charred to perfection and a great accompaniment to the prime rib. I asked for coffee but they didn't have any but our server brought two cups of espresso ... ah, a perfect finish to a great meal. Now, a few nitpicks. One, the server who opened our bottle of wine needs to be trained on how to open and properly serve wine; he opened it and poured two full glasses without letting me taste it first. Luckily, the wine was sound. Two, I had to ask for a spoon to serve the Brussel Sprouts and another knife to cut the prime rib as it was to share ... I got a teaspoon for the sprouts. Sigh! However, these service issues aside, the wait staff was fine and we really enjoyed our meal at The Restaurant at the Cutlery. This corner of Waialae and 9th Avenue now has four excellent restaurants. Went here for my birthday dinner with some friends. The cutlery concept is super interesting - barber shop on one side and restaurant on the other. While I had always drove past it, I never had the excuse to stop by. Located in the old town spot in Kaimuki, across Miro. They have a small lot in the back but it seems to fill up pretty quickly so we had to find street parking. Luckily it is free after 6 or 6:30 pm. Our friends have dined here several times and raved about it so we were super excited! They preordered two prime ribs to share which I would recommended doing since they do sell out! To start, we got the grilled Caesar salad and duck fat fries. To share, we got prime rib, brussel sprouts and a special of the day - uni and crab mac and cheese. Portion sizes are generous. I was shocked at how big the prime rib was! Their prime rib is the star of the show - they smoke it with kiawe wood and the flavor is so unique. Honestly everything was good. The mac and cheese was probably my least favorite and I would try something else next time - but not to say that it wasn't good. This is a great place with a casual vibe - perfect for a small dinner gathering or a good place to celebrate with friends or a significant other. My only complaint would be that we were rushed at the end of our meal and were asked to leave even though we still had time left on our reservation. They do have a table limit but we were kind of rushed at the end of the meal after finishing dessert. Other than that, food and service was excellent and I would recommend coming here if you love steak and are looking for a nicer dinner. read more

Went there for the second time last night and it was every bit as good as the first. My sister-in-law was equally impressed. Whatever seasoning they are using on the rib eye and New York strip, and on the brussels sprouts -- just keep using it. Best I've had, and I love meat! (and don't even usually like brussels sprouts, but these are awesome). Mango Mai Tai was best I've ever had, too. And the service was perfect. Only complaint -- we went during the week and the prime rib wasn't available, and when I had that the first time it was fabulous. The ambiance and service here at the Cutlery is amazing. The food is also really good!! Made reservations and reserved 2 of the prime ribs. I think you are better off reserving one and trying other items on the menu. We had the duck fat fries, the brussel sprouts and the oxtail ragu. All were really good but if i had a favorite it would be the oxtail ragu. The flavor was just really tasty and the noodles were hollow on the inside. What i really appreciated about this establishment is that they take care of their customers. There was a really loud and obnoxious drunk at the bar who should have went home a long time ago, but didnt. Went back to Cutlery after being away for awhile and the food did not disappoint. I had the pork chop shown. Perfectly cooked and so delicious. The homemade mushroom sauce is amazing. My husband enjoyed the seafood pasta with a side of house bread. Sorry no pic of the pasta, he devoured it. I must also mention that we had the pulehu tako and let me say that it's a must to order. Saw some pics of food and ambience and decided to book my next girls night here. Love supporting local! Had to subtract a star because I believe we reminded 4x about the 2 hour time limit. Granted we were a little behind because I couldnt fit my minivan into the last spot in the small lot and had to find street parking (but I got lucky and found one right across the street)! And secondly we were initially seated indoors but then decided outdoors after realizing it may be cooler outdoors. We had a younger child with us so I recommend outdoor seating as well because otherwise you will be sitting on a high top with barstools that werent the sturdiest feeling. The other reason I couldnt rate it higher was the ribeye was very fatty. It was nice they pre-sliced and recommended we eat family style since everything was ala cart. If you dine in here we decided we would def order the duck fat fries (crispy and a nice size serving), brussel sprouts, ans creme brulee! This place is AMAZING!!! The food is so delicious. My husband and I got the porterhouse steak for two and the mushroom medley. Speechless. For apps, we got the oysters and the roasted bone marrow. I just came here for dinner with my husband and friends on Sunday night. There is only high top seating or outdoor patio seating. As soon as you enter the restaurant there is a barbershop on the right side. What a cool concept! Since there were 4 of us we decided to do family style and got a bunch of dishes to share. Food: Clams- A very light broth, not too flavorful. There were a ton of clams though. Duck Fat Fries - YUM!! Fried and crispy goodness! A good amount of fries to share. Definitely a winner! Keiki Mac & Cheese - A delicious classic dish for kids and adults! Bone Marrow - Very flavorful and seasoned well. We all enjoyed this dish even though we don't usually eat bone marrow! Short Ribs - Loved the presentation of the short ribs but it wasn't as tasty as I expected. However, when it's dipped in the chili pepper water it added a nice spicy kick. Oxtail Ragu - Delicious, tender, melt in your mouth oxtail balanced by the mild tomato sauce. Would definitely order this again! New York Strip - Since we were sharing they sliced it for us, which was great! This was a winner! The steak was cooked perfectly to our liking of medium and the seasoning was delicious. They are "Kaimuki's neighboorhood steakhouse" and the steak did not disappoint! I would order this again or go for the Porterhouse for two next time! (They were out of the Porterhouse but did have a Tomahawk on the menu for that night.) Okinawan Sweet Potato - A local spin on a classic apple crumble. This was served warm. We got a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it was so good with the crumble. Overall, we had a great time and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Delicious Food! The Ambiance is amazing! The atmosphere is very cozy inside and secluded outside

Service : The service just brought down the whole restaurants review for me. I understand that being a waiter is difficult, but ours did not know how to prioritize. She was in the middle of taking our drink orders and when we asked for wine, she left to get the wine menu without completing everyone else's drink order. We ordered a bottle of wine and it did not come until we were finish with our 6 appetizers. We had to to ask her that we were still waiting for our bottle of wine and she was like oh yeah I have it there waiting for you.. but it didn't get to us 10min after she left to get it. Then after we finally got our bottle of wine, she told us there was only one slice of the prime rib left and it's the end part of the prime rib. So one of us had to order something else. Clearly, she didn't put in our order yet.. I asked for another set of chopsticks but did not receive it at all. After our main courses, we asked for the dessert menu. We had a big party and had birthday celebrants and it wasn't explained what the birthday celebrant had for their desserts. She cleaned up before taking our dessert orders. When she finally took our orders, she finally explained what dessert were available for the birthday celebrants. Then our dessert was taking a long time to arrive. I'm literally writing this review while waiting for our desert. Our reservation was at 7pm. And we're waiting for our dessert at 10pm. There weren't that many customers anymore at 10pm so we would think that service would be faster. Then when we got the check, they charged us for something that wasn't given, and offered to give it to us when we were already done. When leaving, staff would usually say thank you if they see you leaving. Not this group of staff apparently because we complained about them charging us an extra dessert. I think they should still say thank you when customers are leaving though. For a place where we spent almost $800, we received a bad service from the beginning. It's not fair that businesses can charge for a set tip for 6 people or more and gives us an awful service because it doesn't matter what type of service we receive. Aside from the bad service we experienced the food was actually really good. The prime rib is a must try. I would order the Brussel sprouts. The oysters were good and fresh. The seafood pasta was ok. The sauce for the ragu was excellent. The lamb was also really good. The light up menu looked cool and I liked the ambience. They do play older popular music which I thought were cool because while waiting we were singing along. read more
