This place is really known for its breakfast however, lunch and dinner are also amazing! The flavor and beauty in the dishes is incredible. Hubby and I stopped in for brunch on a Sunday, and even though they were pretty busy, were able to be seated pretty quickly. It took a few minutes to get menus, but that was understandable. I chose a Benedict dish over home fried (sans onions/peppers) and my husband chose a bacon cheeseburger with Canadian bacon subbed for regular. I really liked my dish, it was different, and very good! He said he really liked his burger, although the bun was softer than he expected it to be. The food is either really great or a huge disaster. Getting them on a good day is very worth it. The service however is SO bad. Why is it always so bad. They literally have one waitress per two tables. When I came in recently there were three tables with folks and two waitresses. They Never refilled my coffee. And it took them 10 minutes for us to even have our order taken. I just want this place to be good, why can't they get it together? read more

I'm not sure what's going on at the Train Depot! It used to be one of my favorite breakfast restaurants. We went there this morning for breakfast. What a disappointment. Ok, the food was decent. I mean it's about the same as what you can whip up at home. Nothing special here. But, what will keep me from coming back here is the customer service. What is the soup of the day? Simple question and it should have been easy to answer for an engaged and enthusiastic server right. We asked two separate servers what the soup of the day was and neither one could answer this question. Really? That's really sad for this restaurant. Train Depot owner/management: This is a good restaurant and a local favorite. Please train your staff to familiarize themselves with your menu. It's very disappointing when the employees are less than enthusiastic about the food that they will be serving. After all, they are selling YOUR food and representing YOUR restaurant. I won't be coming back until changes are made. Coffee was served cold, the waitress was way too shy and unfamiliar with food server hospitality, and the wait time for the food was unacceptable. Honestly, haven't been there in 2 years, and now I remember why. Lipstick stains that I could easily wipe off on my coffee mug, they did good with getting it taken care of And a fresh cup brought back. then when i got my food, there was a hair in the French toast and they said "I'll remake that for you" they did not remake it. They just swapped the plate and brought the food right back but MINUS the butter. I could easily see the waitress swap the plates out and call it fine. If I could I'd just put 0 stars. and who charges to add cheese to a burger!? read more

This is the third time in a row with horrible food and service - and my family has been coming here for about 15 years. We will not be frequenting this establishment anymore. The time before, we waited for over 45 minutes for 4 breakfast orders. All to have the Belgian waffle come out soaked in juice - basically a mush mess. Sent it back, waited forever --all to have the same thing happen again. This time (today), my brother's and my omelette were brought out with the shredded cheese added on top, not melted. Fine, ok...perhaps they didn't want things sitting. BUT then to find a dark, short black hair in my omelette about half way through--I was done. The hash browns were burned (my grandma's country fries looked good). In the end, my brother (who eats everything) & I didn't finish our plates but my grandpa did (who loves country fried steak and honestly pretty much doesn't have the sense of taste any longer). My grandma comes here for the egg beaters. Consensus is that GP needs a solid breakfast joint b/c this used to be it and it just isn't cutting it anymore ..,and I am truly sorry to say that. On a side note, our waitress was lovely and took care of the table --with patience and grace working with my elderly & delicate grandparents. read more

We have tried this place a few times and the last time was the worst by far. We were sat in a booth and then forgotten about. I actually had to ask who our server was and if they could come over. They did (I noticed the male patrons got lots of attention) and after ordering Monte Cristo, it took a while to get and when it arrived, VERY disappointed. It was not battered and grilled like French toast should be, very dry and the little turkey and ham that was in it was dry and looked like they had to scraps it together to make the sandwich. The jam that came with it was not jam, it was old berries you could tell had been in the refrigerator for a long time. They were pale and liquidy and tasted freezer burned so I had to use the jelly in the little packets on the table. They also put cheddar cheese in the sandwich?? You know the server NEVER came back to ask if the food was good or we need anything else, so we paid at the front and I tell you, the worst $18.00 sandwich I have ever had. I keep coming back to this place because the food is great; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, the service is miserable. There are usually (when I've been in) about one server per two or three tables, but most of them just hang out in the bar area and chat or bs with their favorite regular. A few issues here and some history, my husband and his family have been eating here for more than 20 years a few owners later we are finally done with it! My daughter likes to order the Texas French toast but more than not it comes to the table undercooked and they send it back and the kitchen tries to rush it out and does the same thing again, and this is habitual to the point my daughter has stopped ordering it! The service is terrible at night, terrible! Slow and I would venture it's the server but guarantee she doesn't make it any faster! Our food sat under the warming lights on the pass through for more than 10 minutes and the table behind is even longer! She server delivers food and doesn't come back until she brings the bill doesn't ask if we need anything more or if our food was even right. While passing through Grants Pass we were getting hungry. I pulled out my phone and started looking on Yelp for a place to eat. Based on the reviews for places in the area we choose The Train Depot. It is located a few blocks off the HWY but not bad. The restaurant has clean restrooms and they were a welcomed sight. The service was good and so was the food. Looking at the pictures on Yelp they do a great job representing what was served to us. Our waiter asked if we were passing thru and then made several suggestions on things to do in the area. This isn't a bad choice if you are on the HWY and looking for a place to eat. read more

As the humorous saying goes, good, cheap or fast, choose two! When you go 0 for 3 that's a strikeout and not so funny. My friend ordered half a chicken and was really looking forward to that. I went with the prawns and a baked potato. After placing our order a server came by later and said there was no half chicken or baked potato available. Hmmm. For a soup this place had just one, a clam chowder. I ordered that and found it had an unusual taste. That led to it being set aside. My friend decided on a salad and got enough croutons to choke a horse along with a bit of lettuce leaf. Drinks turned into a disaster as well. Iced tea was ordered by my friend while I went with raspberry iced tea. At $2.69 for a glass you would think iced tea gets free refills. That was not part of the deal where raspberry iced tea was concerned. My thirsty summer day and all that! Prawns are a delicate meat to cook and easily can be served tough and chewy when overcooked. Mine were. My friend went with some oddball meatloaf concoction with too much going on for ingredients and wound up with a case of the runs. Now for the price of this train wreck of a meal, we could have gone to Sizzler, had a much better experience and paid a third less for classic American fare. As it is we went to an info center in Grants Pass before we headed to the Train Depot and heard they were closing. Since my friend had read so many great Yelps on this place, we avoided being derailed from our destination, headed there with high hopes and wound up severely disappointed. Stopped in for breakfast with a party of four .... two of us got sick after eating the breakfast combo with eggs over easy. The other two ordered country fried steak and French toast. They didn't have any issues. i called and spoke with the manager today and she basically denied it could be due to their food since no one else had called. Maybe other people just don't take the time to let them know. We both had same symptoms about the same time and felt good the next day. Didn't eat anything else but their breakfast. We won't eat there again. Wasn't expecting a refund but wasn't impressed with the flippant attitude. And we've told a lot of people because of that attitude. Big Breakfasts; there's your money buy. Take the S. exit into Grants Pass, and turn left at "E" Street. It's actually on "F", but that's a one-way paralleling "E" back out to the road that will get you easily back ot to Hwy. 5. This is a better place to eat breakfast off of Hwy. 5 than any of the franchise restaraunts that are clustered around the Hwy. 5 offramp (Elmer's and Shari's). About a half-mile more, but worth it. read more

I know some people who live here and love this place. I've only been here for breakfast, and was underwhelmed by the menu. Pretty basic options. The food was okay, the server was nice, but there was nothing special to recommend for anyone who prefers more special fare - forget local, organic, surprising, or fresh (or even espresso drinks, if I recall correctly). We looked around and it was filled with seniors. This would be a nice place to bring Grandpa, if he just wants a nice big plate of eggs and hash browns (he loves the Moons Over My Hammy or whatever at Denny's), but your foodie friend from San Francisco would probably prefer to dine elsewhere in town. Found this cute place on Yelp. Had great reviews so we stopped for lunch on a sunny Saturday. Clean, cute decor, love the theme. Friendly wait staff, our waitress was sweet and did a great job checkin in on us (not too much, not too little) . My husband had a burger with bacon & BBQ sauce, he said it was very good. He also loved the strawberry lemonade. I love a french dip but do not order it often because it can be ruined by fatty meat. I decided to go for it and ordered the deluxe french dip, they add onion, mushrooms and cheese. OH MY GOODNESS. This was the BEST french dip I've ever had! The meat was not fatty, the grilled onions, mushrooms and cheese were so flavorful, as was the au jus. I think i muttered, "mmmmmm" every bite! Portions were great, so are the prices! Obviously this place is known for its breakfasts, but we were lucky enough to scoot in just before closing on Friday night for dinner. Service was friendly and professional, and nobody rushed us, even when they hung out the "closed" sign and started cleaning up. I ordered the smaller portioned flatiron steak and it was really good. Perfectly seasoned and cooked to my preference, served with a nice little green salad, baked potato and some dubious carrots. Everything was just great except the carrots were slightly overcooked, and seasoned with something that should not be on carrots - cinnamon or ground cloves. A little strange. We strolled in during hazardous air from the nearby wildfires. The staff was warm, friendly, and the atmosphere inside was clean, nice, with lots of wood finishes. True to form, there were display trains and some mismatched toy trains for the 6 year old. Standard American fare, complete with American cheese on our burgers. Nicely seasoned, fries were good, green options for those who don't enjoy fried with fried. Definitely, if we're in the area, we will stop again. read more

So I've got mixed feelings about this place. I'd give it a 2.5. The first time we went it was perfect and amazing. My French toast was nice and fluffy and my mothers omelet was evenly cooked and had all the ingredients she asked for. A later visit my mothers over medium egg was well done. And my sausage pattys were so burnt on one side I couldn't cut them. Then another time we came was a disaster. First my mother slipped and fell on a candy that was on the floor (which hadn't been swept) then her omelette was put together weird and didn't have an ingredient she asked for. It was also over cooked. Then my eggs and sausage were over cooked and the "country potatoes" or whatever they were supposed to be were inedible. The potatoes were raw but burnt!!! And they were supposed to be cooked with onions... literally just raw, freshly chopped onions on the plate... no browning on seasoning just raw onions scattered around the potatoes. I visit Grants Pass several times a year...I tend to frequent the places that have good to great food, good to great service, and ambiance. I don't like to go to the "chain" restaurants because, well, you can go to them anytime and mostly anywhere. The "Train Depot" is one of my favorite places to go for breakfast in Grants Pass. It accommodates larger groups and children. It may only be just a notch or two above a Denny's, but the service and the ambiance keeps me going back. The kids menu is great! I would have to say that their "Chicken Tender" strips have to be the best I have ever had! Raising kids and now having grandkids...I have tasted them at many different restaurants. Nice to know that they are on the "Adult" menu too! Pancakes are just O.K., but I am very picky when it comes to pancakes. Last time, I ordered their oatmeal made from scratch! Very tasty, but the portion was a quite small. That's why I tasted my Grandson's Chicken tender! Big mistake! We order more "TO GO". It seems that everyone that have dined with us there, have been happy with their meals. read more

I, along with 5 others, were in Grants Pass for a wedding and opted to dine at Train Depot afterwards due to the reviews. Overall, we were a bit disappointed. The ambiance was OK, but on a cold day in late June (about 62 degrees outside), an air conditioner was blowing very hard right on the table and we all were freezing. The fish & chips was poor. Heavily greasy fish and a flat batter. That said, the fries & slaw were both good. I had the 'hottie' turkey special. Meh. Turkey wasn't very flavorful, the bread plain white, the mashed potatoes/gravy was good. The seafood sampler was probably the best meal. The flounder was very good, as was the scallops. Those 3 meals grade out, in order, to D, C, B. Oh, we had chocolate cheesecake that was excellent for desert. The service was very friendly but a bit slow considering they were near empty. I waited over 10 minutes to get the bill and another 10 for it to get picked up. The prices were very good. So overall I'd say the dining experience was marginally average, the food overall average and the prices very good. Tough place to really gauge. If I ever go back, I do want to try the $14 rib eye. read more

This place has some pretty amazing customer service. My family and I have been driving across the country with our dog, so we needed a place that had outdoor seating -- preferably in the shade, with the temperature at 109°! Fortunately we happened to stop by the Train Depot. When my fiancé and I went in to ask for outdoor seating, one of the two ladies working said that she was about to go home, and they can't serve customers outside when there's only one server on duty. Since we were completely unfamiliar with the area, we asked if it would be okay to pay for food and bring it outside so that the server wouldn't need to worry about waiting on a table outside. As soon as we mentioned the dog, they said that they would let us eat outside, and even offered us some water for the dog to enjoy. The server even helped my fiancé carry the food out when it was ready, and brought out an extra pitcher of ice water for us. So yeah, we were super impressed with the extraordinary service, and then the food came out amazingly, too. We're all so glad to have stopped by. read more

Husband and I ate here on our way out of town yesterday. We'd found this restaurant on Yelp (yay!) and decided to give it a try. It was close to the freeway, and we had a long drive ahead of us to get home. Besides, I love trains. The menu had lots of great choices; I was craving a burger, so I had the Depot Burger with cheese and my husband had the taco salad with homemade chips that were to die for. Our server, Danielle, was absolutely amazing. She gave us fantastic service....very fast, efficient, and friendly. We got to talking about the earrings she was wearing and I got to see others that she's made. In addition to being a great server, she is a real artist as well. The place wasn't crowded, so we had a little bit more time to talk than we would have had it been busy. I can't say enough good things about what a good server she is; she's a real asset to this company. So back to the food. My burger was wonderful, and Husband loved his salad. He couldn't even finish it all. Judging from the rest of the menu, it looks like The Train Depot has a good selection of good, homestyle cooking, and we would definitely go back here if we were in town again. And we would for sure ask to be seated at one of Danielle's tables. I loved the ambiance of all the train stuff; in the (very clean) restroom, there were old train photos all over. We've always like The Train Depot, but it was disappointing to go for dinner and find out they were closed so often when we stopped by. That has all changed now with a new owner who takes business a lot more seriously. The food is a couple notches better, new cook and kitchen help, but most of the menu is the same. They are trying hard to do basically the same thing, but make it better quality. The hours are now breakfast through dinner 7 days a week! Don't miss the chicken pot pies. That is the only thing I wish they offered every single day....and I forget, but I think it is Thursdays. Good stuff! read more
