I arrived early, and my PA was able to see me before my scheduled appointment. I was so pleased. We went over a list of conditions to treat. He explained several medications and their effectiveness regarding my conditions. The Physician (PA) was also receptive to my prior medical knowledge. I appreciated that. They ordered my medicine within two hours and I hope to re give them soon. One of my medications should have been covered by my insurance, but it was not. Dr Buka took me in for an emergency reaction that was very traumatic. They neglected to tell me I needed a referral from my PCP in order for insurance to process and cover the visit. Most specialist offices dont even take you in if a referral is needed as called out on your insurance. Months later I was hit with a bill that was almost $1000! My PCP could have backdated my referral 5 days if this office cared to follow up in a timely manner. Either way, that doesnt matter when you dont receive a bill until months later! They took advantage of my panic state and neglected to ask for the referral, so I was stuck paying this bill. Such completely unethical behavior. This is in addition to my emergency reaction being tested, which I should have gotten results the next day. They made me wait 2 weeks until my follow up to tell me the results, not even with the doctor I originally saw. I had a procedure done in April and instead of seeking reimbursement from my private insurance, as the practtice did on a similar procedure a year earlier, they charged by credit card $640. Then, when they were paid again in full by my insurance, they have reused for more than 6 weeks to refund the money they improperly took from my credit card, Several calls with "Patient Escalation" representatives have only resulted in getting the runaround and weak excuses about "escalating to my manager." Not a horrible experience. I was worried because of all the terrible reviews. Overall, I was ok with my experience. It seems there are multiple providers, so that could lead to a mixed experience. Overall, I like the ease of scheduling online. They have evening hours that are nice and also seem to open early, so it's easy to get an appointment. The front desk staff can be a little salty, but overall they are helpful - they are just really no nonsense and direct. I personally feel like it all depends how you use this place. For example, I use this as in-between appointments with my regular dermatology provider. I think if I had an issue more medical in nature, I wouldn't go here, just because this feels more like the Urgent Care of dermatology - good for a quick fix, but then you follow up with your regular provider. read more

I arrived today on time and now it is 9:43 and I am still waiting. I asked the woman at the front desk what was going on and she said that my appointment was at 9:30. I I have been trying to resolve a billing issue for several months now and have been going in circles - I have spoken to multiple people multiple times, including the Dermatology Specialists office and the third party outsourced billing / collections service they utilize. It appears that a recent claim was incorrectly submitted to my insurance (under the wrong provider) and was denied; rather than correcting the issue with my insurance company, I am being billed for the out-of-pocket cost. Additionally, I recently received a random bill from a visit in 2022 (over 3 years ago!), despite visiting the Dermatology Specialists dozens of times since and always being up-to-date on my payments. Every time I speak with someone, they always promise to look into the issues and escalate the matter, but I never hear back. Although I liked the dermatologists themselves, the challenges in resolving these billing issues are forcing me to search for a new dermatology provider. read more

Fantastic process and appointment. I was keeping an eye on a blemish for couple of months and was concerned it wasn't going away. I decided to get it checked out, but my usual derm was booked for a month. I went online and amazingly was able to book an appointment at The Dermatology Specialists THE NEXT MORNING with Dr Allison Gruen. It started exactly on time and I was done and out the door in half an hour. Dr Allison was great. Very friendly, thorough. Fortunately it turned out I had nothing to worry about. WARNING DO NOT USE THIS PLACE! I had gone to this location for a follow up visit with Dr. Alison Gruen and I was prescribed a medication to help with my condition which I had been using. Dr. Gruen had told me that I had to use the medication twice a day and only to use it if there were any flare ups. Over the months I had used the medication and then I realized that there weren't any refills remaining so I had called the office to ask if they could give me more refills. The person that I was talking to was completely useless and incompetent and then she said that I had to come in for a follow up since it had been more than 3 months and they couldn't refill my prescription after they already gave me a diagnosis. I've been seeing Dr. Guen, who is amazing, for over 4-5 years. She has me on two lotions for adult acne: Clindamycin in the morning and a combination of Benzoproxide/clindamycin at night. It worked wonderfully. My skin cleared up and looked great. So, why the 1-star rating? The doctor is amazing; the business is awful!! I ran out of the clindamycin lotion, however, I had my 6-month follow-up appointment coming up. When I showed up, I was informed that Dr. Gruen was on vacation. They asked if I wanted to see the other provider. Sure, all I need was refills on the clindamycin. The medical assistant was very friendly. At least three times during the appointment, I explained the skin regimen and said I needed refills for the clindamycin. I emphasized that I had plenty of the night lotion-Clinda/benzo; I only needed the clindamycin. Each time I was assured of the refill. They even confirmed my pharmacy. The new doctor said to continue the regimen. As I left I again, confirmed that the clindamycin was being refilled. When I picked up my prescription, it was the combo night lotion--the one I said I didn't need refills--and NO prescription for the clindamycin. I went on their website and sent a message explaining the situation and asking for the needed refill. Several weeks later and I still have not received a response. I called and spoke to a person. I explained the situation and asked for the refill. "Okay, we'll call you when it's ready." I still have not received a return phone call. So, I booked an online appointment. I "Zoomed" with an RNP and explained the situation. She reassured me she understood and confirmed my pharmacy. She said she was sending in the needed refill with plenty of refills. A week later AND THERE STILL IS NO REFILL AT THE PHARMACY. At this point, it has gone beyond incompetency and into willful neglect. I have been coming to this location for about 6 years and the doctors are great but the billing department is a disaster. Even though I haven't had an appointment in months, I received a bill yesterday out of nowhere. The bill had no information about the nature of care of the date of service. When I called to inquire about the bill, the woman who answered was extremely defensive and rude. She said that my insurance company renegotiated their coverage and that was it but the insurance company she named wasn't even my insurance company! This dermatologist is extremely unreliable and uncommunicative. I first saw them in the winter, and when they "sent in" my prescription to the pharmacy, they didn't actually send it in. I contacted the pharmacy contact information given, and the pharmacy had never heard from the practice. When I brought this up, they said things often "get lost in translation". So they sent the prescription to another pharmacy. When it came time to get refills, I was unable to order refills, as I needed an appointment with my dermatologist in order to schedule a refill. This would have been good for me to know, as the dermatologist scheduled my appointment for 6 months out (instead of 3 months out, as they were supposed to do), so I had to go in urgently and ask about the refill status. This dermatologist scheduled an appointment farther out than they were supposed to, clearly showing that they either didn't know to schedule my appointments for every 3 months or didn't think it through. This caused me to miss doses of my medication with no alternative solution. When I calmly expressed my frustration with the situation, they again wrote it off to "things getting lost in translation". This dermatologist is operated extremely poorly and severely mismanaged. I would not recommend them at all. read more

Dr. Buka left me feeling confused, frustrated and upset, 0/5 experience at The Dermatology Specialist's. I was seen on the UWS, Dr. Buka is one of the founders of this chain of offices, so I believe this is a reflection of all of his locations, considering he was the provider that I saw. I left my appointment crying, due to the lack of information and care that Dr. Buka exhibited. Dr. Buka brought in a student without asking me if it was okay. The two of them examined my body, speaking primarily to each other, hardly answering my questions. The doctor prompted the medical assistant to put a patch test on my back. I got no information on this test or the follow ups. After placing the patch test, I asked questions and assumed that the doctor would come back in and explain further and he did not. The mandatory two day follow up had to be scheduled at a different office because the original office that I went to was closed the two days after, the only offices with appoint times available for the mandatory follow up were at least 40 minutes by train from where I live. I have decided to take control and have someone else, entirely, read my patch test. It was only after calling to cancel my appointment and get the doctor's name that I was informed about a prescription he had called in for me, and the directions for how to apply it, as he did not tell me anything about this. I've never left a bad review for anything and am sorry to do it now, but I hope I can help spare others my experience. Issue #1: When I first went, I asked about fees, and the receptionist assured me that my insurance would cover the costs. I feel like an idiot for asking the receptionist instead of my insurance company: of course that wasn't true, and I'd be held responsible for half the bill. For that matter, nobody told me that each check-up would cost between $250-750. I only found out the night before I was going to have stitches out, and I got a call telling me that I owing about a thousand dollars that I had to pay immediately, or I'd be left with my stitches in. That was the first time I heard the fees. Issue #2: My issue was a cyst on my head. The office routinely applied injections that had little-to-no-effect and required me to keep returning for more $250 ointment sessions. I wasn't thrilled, especially when I found out they could just break open the cyst. Issue #3: When the doctor eventually broke open the cyst, they informed me that I shouldn't have been given the injections in the first place, and that this wasn't good practice. Issue #4: The doctor finally tried to break open my cyst by puncturing it, then told me that she had made a mistake as blood exploded out from my head onto my face and floor; she then told me she'd have to close it because of the mistake and had to engage in additional procedures. Because of these additional procedures, which were owed to her "mistake," this entire visit cost $957, well beyond the $250 that each visit was supposed to cost--and of course, I was never informed of the price beyond being told my first visit that insurance would cover everything. Issue #5: I have spent the past six months trying to reach the billing department to dispute the bill, as I'm being charged for their mistakes. They've continually told me they needed to check with supervisors while continuing to send me bills warning me that I would be turned over to a credit collector. Finally, nearly a year after my visits, I was informed that I owe the entire amount for services rendered. I cannot say in the strongest terms: do not go here. There are doctor's offices that have issues with the administration, with the medical practice, and with exorbitant fees--this is the only one I've ever been to that has issues with all three. read more

Incredibly disappointed by the service and experience at this location. I wish I had paid closer attention to the review prior to booking an appointment here. I booked an emergency lunch appointment at this location. Prior to day of the appointment, I called and asked out about any paper work I could fill out to avoid any delays upon arrival as I was breaking up my work day. I was provided with the forms and an e-mail address where to send it to. Upon arriving (early) for my appointment, the receptionist had a very nasty and unwelcoming attitude. She kept telling me I had not sent the forms, despite me showing her on the phone where I had sent them to. Nonetheless, I filled out the forms. I was then forced to wait more than 20 minutes to finally be seen. Once the doctor finally arrived at my room, it was a speed-date of a visit. She quickly sped through my forms, confirmed my medical conditions, and told me to not pick at my face (acne) and she would call in a medication ASAP that day. I spent at most 3-5 minutes with her, at most. I never received the prescription. Ever. No one called, no one followed up. I called the office numerous times to follow-up and no one returned my call. By chance, I spoke with my gynecologist and when I happened to mention the prescription I was prescribed, she was surprised that was the recommendation as I am diagnosed with PCOS. The specific birth control I am currently on (which I informed the dermatologist on both the forms and in person) helps regulate my cycle along with other symptoms and the medication the dermatologist recommended creates irregular periods and can be counterintuitive to the progress I have made thus far. Had the doctor maybe taken one more minute to speak with me or examined more carefully the forms, she might have allowed me to explain why I was on that birth control. After a month of not hearing back from the office, I had to show up in person to speak with someone. I finally got a phone call from a "manager" in January which after superficial conversations, it resulted in absolutely no offer or alternative resolutions on their end. It is the patient's right to receive proper assessment, including description of any potential risks or benefits. I don't understand how they have the audacity to charge someone for a such a horrible visit where absolutely no interest in the patient was demonstrated from beginning to end. I ended up going to another provider. Please heed care and do your research. read more

I received a debt collection notice from a third party company without having been contacted by the office and informed that I owed them anything. I paid about a $9 fee months ago after visiting and they just sent a $10 collection. Not sure if this is the same charge that I actually previously paid for, but due to their incompetence and inability to contact me before sending a debt collector after me means that they likely screwed up and didn't see that I paid the $9 fee. This office doesn't deserve any business if they're going to go around indiscriminately trying to ruin people's credit scores without doing their own due diligence beforehand. read more

Dr Buka was an hour late for my last appointment and then canceled shortly before my current appointment (for which I'd taken off half a day of work, paid $50 in commuting expenses, and come all the way in from CT). I tried another doctor at a different location and had almost no results after $700. I went back to show them it hadn't worked, then got a $200 bill for the "consultation" (wasn't told in advance there would be a charge for them doing nothing except to tell me that this time I must not have been clear about what I wanted). Despite the review below, I decided to give uws office a try since I've been to their other locations where the service has been great and they did a great job removing a cyst. Please be advised this uws location always has only 1 doctor and they book in 10 min appointment slots which of course is impossible to stay on track. Average wait time is at least 20 min. The receptionists fully know this said "management" told them they had to do it this way despite customer dissatisfaction. Lastly, there's no direct office telephone number so you have to call this main central number who then re-routes your call. I called the office because I read in their description, they treat spider veins. The woman I spoke to said yes, they do that and scheduled an appointment for me. When I arrived for my appointment, I filled out the paperwork and met with an assistant, who said "so you are here for a skin cancer screening." I said NO and explained why I was there. She then asked me a bunch of rote questions, and entered my information into the computer. Following, PA Elyssa Drucker came into the room. She asked how she could help, and I told her what I was there for (spider veins) and she stated, "we don't do that here." She said there was a doctor associated with their practice who worked "somewhere" but she was not sure, and she was not even sure about what any of the procedures would entail, and stated she knows nothing about it, but is looking forward to taking a class to learn about it soon. She said they could set me up with a referral for that doctor, but could not provide any other information. I said "OK", and left. (That doctors office did call me - 3 weeks later!) I was at this place for a total of about eight minutes. They billed my insurance company for a 99203 CPT code which is a new patient evaluation for 30 - 44 minutes. After all was said and done I was responsible for almost $170! I should not have been billed at all. They didn't do anything or even know anything about a service they claim to provide. read more

I was out of a medication (that I can't stop taking without losing my hair) and my pharmacy had been trying to get approval to refill it for a week. When I went to call, they said "oh since you haven't been here in 8 months we can't refill it until your seen by the doctor." Ok so you can call me once a week when I owe $50 but you can't call me once to tell me this when you know from my pharmacy requests that I've been trying to get a refill???? And then these receptionists act like you are ruining their lives for having them do their job. This review is about how the Manhattan Valley office is run, not the quality of the care. I see Lauren, who is amazing and my go to for everything dermatologic - medical and cosmetic, but the office is poorly run. I had an appointment and had to push the time back so called plenty early; I was told to come at 6:50 p.m. I did; the office was closed - no notice no nothing. I rescheduled and received calls and texts to confirm and then received a call the day before telling me that $250 would be collected up front and any additional charges after. Fine, but annoying to receive multiple emails, texts and confirmation calls and then get this call as well. Arrived at 9:26 for my 9:30 appointment which should take 10 mins max (established patient) and was promptly charged $250; then at 9:46, I said if I could not be seen I would have to come back because I had a meeting scheduled (which was true); they told me at 9:49 that all the treatment rooms were being used, so, I had to reschedule again. I really like Lauren and want to continue coming here, but part of what worked for me was the efficiency and not having to wait - if I want to wait more than 10 mins, I can go to any doctor in NY! Absolutely a horrible experience!! I went on a Saturday to the UWS location since the UES location had no appointments. I thought I was seeing a dermatologist but ended up seeing a Physician Assistant, Haleh Stratton. She had no bedside manner, no couth, was very curt, rude and didn't explain anything about my diagnosis. I asked her if she could please explain to my husband who was outside waiting in the car but she said no as she had other patients to see. REALLY?? OMG what happen to spending time with a patient to explain the diagnosis! Not only that but this PA didn't submit all prescriptions to my pharmacist. I called the offices but there is no direct number for this particular location and ended up talking to someone in Astoria????!!! Unbelievable, I have never been treated so poorly as a new patient. Thank god for the medical assistant, Nathalie Ramos who thoroughly explain everything and wrote down all medications for my reference and how to proceed. I have since been in touch with the Manager of this location, Joanne Mai who will hopefully rectify everything that happened on Saturday. I wish I would of seen the reviews on Yelp before going, not the Google reviews which is entirely different. I would suggest getting a referral from your PCP ideally with the same practice so everyone has access to you patient portal. Don't use a concierge service such as this. So far...so not good. I tried to be seen at two different locations of this chain of dermatology offices. I made an appointment online at the one near me, to see the nurse practitioner. I showed up early, waited 5 minutes or more before any of the three receptionists would even look at me, then waited 30 minutes before I discovered that the nurse practitioner I had booked was not even there. I did not appreciate that they emailed to confirm my appointment with that provider, who was not even there. I waited a half hour for nothing. I did not want to see a PA, the only provider in the office, so they booked me at another location where there was an MD available. On the way, I had some transportation delays, and also a hard time finding the office, which was not well marked from the street. I finally found it, but by then I was late by fifteen minutes and was told there would now be a wait as there were three people ahead of me. Okay that's fair, but when I was trying to find the office it became clear that it's impossible to reach these offices by phone. It's a medical practice, so that is indefensible. You call the phone number listed for that office and you get a tape that tells you to book an appointment online. I wanted to call and get help finding the office and also tell them why I was late to hopefully hang onto the appointment. They do not answer the phone. If I could give this place a 0 I would. It is SO unlike me to write a review, but I was made to feel so horrible by Dr. Gonzalez that everyone else must know not to waste their time. 1 - I was prescribed medicines for acne that made the skin on my face completely inflamed, itchy, red, painful. I was told very sternly to give the meds 3 months to work, but I was in unbearable discomfort. I called back to ask if this was normal, see if the creams were maybe having a bad reaction with other products...it took a week of calling every day to even get a response, which was that I had to waste more of my time and come in. The Dr. refused to give any sort of advice over the phone. 2 - I was given another treatment for scars from a previous surgery that I was told multiple times was covered by insurance...and then I get a $300 bill. I don't get a bill after my 1st, 2nd, but after my THIRD appointment finding out that it's not actually covered. When I called the billing department to inquire, I was VERY rudely told that I own my insurance, not the Dr., and it is not her problem to look out for my insurance, just to look out for my care. The saga continues. I received a different bill via email, more expensive than the visit, ostensibly for someone (not a doctor, but a manager at a different branch) getting on the phone to tell me my results were benign, after I held on for an eternity and demanded to know my lab results (which they had been holding onto for one month). The Dermatology Specialists hold your results hostage to force you to come in for a visit so they can charge you again. If you refuse to come in for an unnecessary follow-up visit, they will charge you to give you results over the phone. I have filed my complaints and hope that the State Health Board exposes them for the fraud that they are. read more
