We found this place on yelp and read the reviews. Boy these people that wrote good reviews must have zero taste buds. The food was awful, the waitress we had needed to take some Ritalin. She talked so fast none of us even knew what she was saying. Then we placed our order and she was totally going to not take my order and pay more attention to my husband and son. Feeling fine until my daughter and I decided to dine here after a long road trip. I ordered the Reuben sandwich and asked for horse radish. After delivering my sandwich, the mail waiter went to the back and grabbed a little bottle of horse radish. This should've been a red flag not to eat it from the little bottle. Who knows how many people dipped from it using dirty utensils?? Again, first meal after a long road trip and decided to eat anyways. We stopped here after spending the day at Dollywood. If you review the Yelp reviews you'll see its hit and miss and that, IMO, sums it up. I had the fried catfish and double order of fried green tomatoes. The fish was as bland as it gets. There wasn't any flavor- very neutral. The fried green tomatoes were greasy and very disappointing. My meal was not worth eating. However the rest of the party loved their hamburgers- didn't catch the name of the burgers sorry The one bright spot - our waitress was awesome and for some odd reason I can't remember her name. Having eaten here in the past, it gives me no pleasure to give them this review. We stopped by this evening to have dinner and when we got to the front door we were astounded to see that none of the staff were wearing masks. We left immediately, so we did not eat here, but with elderly parents there was no way we would potentially expose them to the virus. We wound up here by accident. We had intended to visit Mel's Diner, because of reviews we saw here, but the Mapquest app led us here, so we decided to give them a try. We were greeted warmly by several people as we entered. It's a very family-friendly environment. We were led to a table within one minute, and our beverages were brought out right away. We visited right about 6:00 pm, so it was busy. Our server was very attentive, but during our visit, she seemed to have a couple more tables than she could comfortably handle. The wait for the food was just a bit longer than we would have liked. The food itself was standard diner fare; good, but not great. One pleasant surprise was the portion size of the salad. It was huge! And fresh. The restaurant itself was spotless, as were the restrooms. For beverages, they serve Pepsi products, although the Coca-Cola logo is prominent in the photo on the back of the menu. I guess they used to serve Coke, but switched to Pepsi to cut costs. In an area dominated by mediocre chain restaurants, it's refreshing to see a place like The Diner doing well. read more

UPDATE Well, we waited about three months to drop back in for brunch after church yesterday and again we were disappointed. The food was ok, with the exception of my wife's hashbrowns were left off of her plate so when she asked about them, they finally showed up when she was nearly finished eating. The hostess was snappy with people coming in and we waited over 5 minutes for her to clear tables and seat people when we were trying to pay our check when leaving. The friendly smiles of the entire staff under the previous owners is long gone and been replaced with handheld electronic ordering devices and big flat screens in the kitchen but in the process, you have totally forgotten about the customer. Swing and a miss today. We've eaten here several Times before on the way through town and the food and service were always great. We clearly came on an off day. We waited over 45 minutes for biscuits and gravy and a country skillet. I don't mind the wait considering the entire hospitality industry is short staffed but if I have to wait at least make it taste good. Nothing in either dish takes that long. Biscuits were dry (even drowned in gravy) and the hash browns underneath were hard and chewy. Not crunchy like grilled hash browns should be. My eggs were cooked perfectly so that's a win. Our server had way too many tables. I've worked in the industry most of my life and 7 tables is a lot for any server, no matter how experienced. She did try her best to take care of everyone though. Food was ok but I was very disappointed by our waitresses response after seeing our bill & them not removing the cost of my aunts meal after the waitress spilled a full glass of ice water on her lap, her response to me asking "are you really going to charge her for the meal?" the waitress replied... "We don't do that here, it was just water". It's also 37 degrees outside. I've never would have thought that after spilling a full glass of water on a customer on 37 degree night you'd charge them for an $8 meal. I was actually embarrassed for her with that response. I'm not entirely sure what an old-timey diner ACTUALLY looked like back in the day (cause I wasn't there), but I took my parents to The Diner and they said it brought them back. The waitresses are in poodle skirts, the breakfast is cooked right, and the entire staff is oh-so friendly. I'd say this experience ranks in my top 5 favorite of my vacation to Tennessee, which is saying a lot, given the absolutely gorgeous mountains we were surrounded by. Cool fifties style diner! I'm a theme kind of girl so when we passed this back in time diner while looking for a place to eat lunch it was a definite stop. Even though there were many tempting choices on the menu I went with a burger and fries for my first visit. They were very good and hit the spot for lunch. I can't wait for our next visit to the area to try the meatloaf. The service was good just not very fast. If you only have an hour for lunch then you may want to go elsewhere or call ahead. While enjoying a long weekend in Tennessee, we decided to try The Diner. Despite the kitschy premise, the restaurant is removed enough from the tourist area to attract what appeared to be locals. The restaurant is set up like a classic 1950's diner, complete with waitresses in poodle skirts, but the menu is way more extensive. While the elk burgers were tempting, the folks in my party decided to go more traditional and order diner classics such as the meatloaf and chicken and dumplings. The food was solid, good food, but nothing spectacular. The desserts, however, were amazing. Scratch-made pies, banana splits, and sundaes were all consumed, shared and marveled at. I had the chicken fried steak, it was amazing 10/10, mashed potatoes were fluffy and the white gravy on the potatoes and steak was very tasty as well. Wasnt sure about this place going in, first impressions werent great as far as the outside sidewalks could have used some sweeping. Cigarette butts and few pieces of trash here and there but the reviews weren't too bad so We decided to go ahead. So glad we did. Staff was very friendly, we were seated and helped right away. The atmosphere is great. Really nostalgic for the type of restaurant. Usually with this type of restaurant they lack on the feel that your back in time with over use of neon lights.
