Smallest Plates Ever! They want to be a shareable plate format however there's not much on the plate to share. We are not "big food" people - we love going to tapas places where we usually order 3 plates between the two of us. Last night we went to the Diplomat with another couple and ordered 7 plates between the four of us - staples like the Trout, Pork Shoulder, and Beef Short Ribs among others. I must say they were all very tasty but so small we walked down Brady for some Empanadas to finish our evening eats. Nice place but no need to be back. read more

Weird. For the amount of items we ordered as a table of 4, we were left ordering delivery food minutes after getting back home. For the price, we were all left feeling shorted out of boatloads of food. Glad we tried. Good food. Not enough of it for the price. read more

Giving it a 3 star because the waitress was friendly and the food was tasty. But, really, the portions were so small it was shameful, and we were told they were shareable plates. We were 3 average size adults and a 5 year old. The bill was $185 excluding tip and everyone was still hungry. The table seating was not comfortable. If you want tasty food and nice staff, there are much better locations than Brady Street for the price and the portions. read more

My wife and I moved from Portland, Oregon a year ago, and have been enjoying the ongoing search for great food in the area. We found another one here at the Diplomat. The environment is warm, open and fun, and the lighting is perfect. We were greeted and seated quickly, and the server was timely, friendly and warm. We loved the small, shared plate approach, and every dish we had was carefully prepared, hot and creative. The chicken confit and gnocchi were outstanding, as was the beet salad and trout. The pretzel balls were amazing as well. The desserts were SO good, and overall, it was an exceptional experience. Cudos to the chef, kitchen and staff for a great evening. We'll be back!! read more

The Diplomat is absolutely, positively my new favorite spot on Brady Street! It's a beautifully-designed space, lots of character and nods to a collective Milwaukee identity. Great atmosphere/vibe, perfect for a gathering with friends or a night out with your significant other. It's been open a couple months now and I've been at least a handful of times (and am happy they finally have a Yelp page!). The drinks are PHENOMENAL, I mean they are just well-crafted beverages. My favorite is the "She Loves Me Not" (has tequila) but their red wines make me happy too. Love it. And the food!! Oh man, talk about thoughtful menu design. The chef impresses me with his commitment to comfort and familiarity, while providing his own spin on beloved dishes. Essentially takes you on a culinary journey through his culinary lens. Lol, I kid you not. Definitely options for those who are gluten-free or gluten-intolerant as well as vegetarian. But overall, I recommend their Diplomat fries (yum), their eggplant curry (GF/DF!), the meat and potatoes (is served med-rare, FYI), and the cheese-grits dish. Definitely a must for anyone who likes good food. read more

The Diplomat is a very unique and cozy place. They have a great Happy Hour all night on Mondays. My only complaint is that it's small plates for the most part. I like to leave a place feeling full. The tastes were very unique, though I prefer larger portions and more options. read more

The Diplomat is beyond amazing! We had 8 courses with wine pairings last night and I'm still thinking about our dinner today! Each dish is thoughtfully created and prepared. This is a wonderful hidden gem on Brady. The drinks are original and delicious (and quite a bit unusual). They make a mean Old Fashion, and have quite a selection of wines and beers. The atmosphere is an Old-World style; it has a lot of class. I've been here while hanging out with friends and on a great first date. The food is excellent as well, especially the Diplomat Fries. The service is also great, whether sitting at the bar or in the restaurant portion. read more

We had picked up several phone orders at the curbside pickup and have never been disappointed. The Diplomac is the best burger in Milwaukee hands down! We recently ordered from there Christmas menu. Picked it up at the given time and had no delays (unlike some other restaurants). Perfect cooking instructions. We had the beef weelington, the lobster, soup, salad and bread. Everything was outstanding. It felt like we had restaraunt quality food in our own home. Hats off to the diplomat for contributing to a 2020 Christmas to remeber in a good way. Thank you. read more

We went to the Diplomat this weekend and our dinner was delicious. My date ordered the gnocchi which is not one of my favorite dishes, but it was great and I was debating on getting another order! We had wanted to go here for a long time and finally had a chance last night. The food was outstanding! We ordered the carrot and dill small plates and the trout entree. One does have to be patient as not all food comes out at the same time (as we were warned). But, it was with the wait! They were a bit short on staff, so the two servers and bartender were working pretty hard. If you go later in the evening also be prepared to search for parking. However, again, it was all worth it for the food! I definitely would recommend it. read more

This place surprised me! Fun vibe & inviting atmosphere. Food is outstanding and fresh, everything is made in-house including their ketchup & breads. I went with a group of 14 and they accommodated so well. The baby octopus, gnocchi, and scallops, were just a few amazing options I tried. Many from the group ordered the Diplomac burger which was simply delicious. The Branzino was recommended to me by the server and it was delightful. This restaurant is a disgrace to the industry. While the servers are trying their best, the food is as bland as I have had at any restaurant anywhere in the world. Of course, as others mention, the availability of food is equivalent to a grocery store in the waning hours before a hurricane makes landfall. But let's discuss the inventory we encountered: Fries - these took ordering twice and more than an hour to receive six (6) fries. When I asked approximately how much longer until the fries would be out since it had been more than 30 minutes, the waitress said "They're working." At least the French fries were working? Beets - not bad. Would order this one dish again if it were at a different restaurant. "Chicken in a biscuit" - one of the dryer biscuits man has ever made. The sauce somewhat helps, I suppose. The 100% lack of chicken did not. Caesar Deviled Eggs - hands down the most disgusting deviled eggs I have ever tasted. This 1.5 egg belongs nowhere except in Hell itself. Chicken Fried Cornish Hen - fried so long (presumably waiting for their French frie friends to stop "working") that you could barely cut through it. Incredibly dry once you carved your way through anyways. And if the owner accuses me of having a lack of respect for the service industry (as he RUDELY did to other reviewers), note that I once worked as a waiter. This restaurant, despite the nice aesthetic, is in way over its head and is simply horrible. Feel free to pass on The Diplomat (until it inevitably closes) and head instead to one of the many more welcoming and tasty dining spots throughout Milwaukee. read more

Wow, constantly amazed by the culinary adventure, the Baldwin family, and the highly skilled team at The Diplomat. Another exceptional evening. You know it's good food when you run into a noted Milwaukee chef taking his father to dinner at The Diplomat. So my guest and dinner partner last evening is gluten free. Informed the team at the diplomat prior to our dinner. They went out of their way last evening using gluten free flower to bread the beech mushrooms small plate (incredible tender, moist, nutty earthy undertones, and surprising flavor, probably our favorite thing (actually was recommended by the Milwaukee chef that flew under the radar for a dinner with his father last night)). Had the anchovy small plate that was very unique. Tasted of sublime deviled eggs with the punch of fresh anchovies and other flavors. Had the octopus, a fair amount of time when I order octopus it is not that good as sometimes it is just way overdone with accompanying agreements that overpower the octopus. That was not the case. Served with delicious citrus and cooked expertly it was just awesome. For our main course my partner had the trout and I enjoyed the new york strip. Trout was expertly prepared and the strip steak was an attestment to chef Danes experience as a go to chef at Carnevor and Mr. B's. Can't wait to return. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was upbeat yet intimate. read more

Wonderful American style restaurant in Milwaukee. My family and I were visiting from out of town, searching for a lunch spot. We stopped into this very well decorated spot with comfortable seating and ample light. The co owner sat us and we started chatting it up. They were able to accommodate their menu for two vegans (out of a group of 7). So kind! Everyone loved their food: so fresh and flavorful. The burger, fries, dill Caesar salad, and risotto were delicious. The chef was able to make the Lentil and Risotto dishes vegan :-) Highly recommend and will return next time I'm in town. read more

Extremely small portions and lackluster service. Chicken in a biscuit was dry as a bone, not even sure there was chicken in it. The short rib for $17 was barely a mouthful and the pork shoulder was also dry and extremely small. Too many great food places in MKE to go to, I would never return here. This is my dream dinner experience. Wonderful service and they seated us 6' from other customers when we requested that. Beautiful menu with vegetable and meat options. Our favorites were the corn grits with chicken and the pot de creme dessert with shortbread cookies. Wow! Presentation and flavors were uniquely combined and totally enjoyable. I had never had a nebbiolo wine and I think it's a new favorite. Can't wait to go back for another meal. read more

The owner invited us in for a drink as we were checking out the menu posted outside. We ended up having the best cheesecake we've ever tasted paired with carefully crafted cocktails. Food: amazing. Only downside is some of the sizes of dishes are incredibly small, which isn't exactly described on menu. Biscuits were small but delicious. Could have had 3 more orders of those. I live near Chicago, but every time I'm in Milwaukee I always go to the Diplomat and try something new, it is always delicious and leaves me dreaming of my next visit when I go back home. Dane (the owner) and his wife Anna are always extremely hospitable and involved. Omar is very attentive and friendly, it's always a comfort to see him there. Visited the Diplomat for the first time tonight and everything was amazing! My husband had the Diplomac and was very pleased with the size and taste of the burger. This is a lovely space with delicious small plates. More importantly, the chef/owner and his wife are genuinely warm and caring people. We called on a Saturday night to see if they had soup on the menu, as my husband is dealing with health issues and that's usually the only thing he can tolerate. The chef explained that there was no soup on the menu, then asked what soup we liked---so he could make some before we arrived later. That caring gesture meant the world to us! We enjoyed tasty cocktails (thanks, Jessica!) before sharing the majority of small plates on the menu. The grits, veggie crudo, pappardelle and fries were our group's winners, but everything was fresh and carefully prepared, so you can't go wrong. read more

Public service announcement: Get yourself to diplomat! The curb appeal is wonderful, the doors in particular remind me of DC. The design is modern, clean, yet cozy. Service was wonderful. Kayla our server gave detailed recommendations and was thoughtful in her pacing while being out plates. Each plate was thoughtful with some element of surprise ie the milk jam in the beet salad. We tried and I would 100% recommend the following- beet salad, cauliflower, short ribs, corn grits, gnocchi and trout, followed by the chocolate mousse. Maybe this was a case of high expectations meeting an average meal. Our group shared the date carpaccio, lentils, trout, gnocchi, burger, grits, olive oil cake, and peanut butter pie. It was all good, but nothing was memorable. There were some nice textures like the crispy trout skin and some nice flavors like the chanterelles that came with the grits. But there were disappointments like the date carpaccio and the super thick fries that came with the burger. Service was great, drinks were good but small for the price. There's too much competition in Milwaukee to make this a regular stop. A drink and a plate or two during happy hour (4-6) is the way to go. read more

HOLY COW. Our dinner was amazing. The food is shared plates so we got the deviled eggs, scallops, and pork belly. Each was enough for two people to share and not be disappointed. We also got the steak which can be an entree or shared. I think that was my favorite thing!! The peanut butter pie and the sangria were also both to die for.
