Underwhelmed. This was our second time at the Diplomat (previous visit was pre-pandemic, shortly after this restaurant opened). Our first experience was just okay, but we had high hopes after reading so many positive recent reviews. Sadly, we were still not impressed. We ordered the tartine, chicken liver mousse, confit chicken leg, and crab rolls (the short ribs looked promising, but they were sold out). The mousse was a highlight; everything else was disappointingly bland and lacking in flavor. We usually love to sample desserts, but we were so unimpressed by our dinner choices that we left to get dessert elsewhere. On a positive note, our waiter was fantastic--very warm and friendly. But with such a lackluster menu, good service won't be enough to tempt us to return. read more

Though we don't make it to The Diplomat very often, I've been impressed at each visit. The ambience is very inviting, with deep, bold colors, subtle lighting and portions of the walls dedicated to beautiful plants. It's a great space for date night or a nice dinner with friends and family. They have a wide selection of beer, wine and cocktails. I've enjoyed the cocktais I've ordered and my dining companions seemed to have like their beer selections as well. We've never had a bad dish there either, though perhaps some pale in comparison to others. The plates are mostly for sharing and decently priced for doing so. There is a wide selection of vegetarian options as well. From what I've gathered, the menu does change seasonally, and I recommend trying the seasonal dishes that showcase the freshest ingredients. The presentation of the food is all very lovely. And lastly, the service is fitting with everything else. I'll certainly make more of an effort going forward to include the Diplomat in our dining rotation. read more

We have been wanting to visit The Diplomat for a while now and finally got to try it! It wasn't too crowded in the evening so we got seated right away. We ordered some Chianti and some appetizer to start with. We then mainly got plates to share and food tasted good. Our server was extremely polite and helped us with any questions we had. We got the trout and the chicken and both were delicious. The sauces were delicious and they were all home made. They had a few veggie options which was nice to try out! I believe they change their menu occasionally and I would love to come try other options soon. Since they are located in Brady, parking can be a challenge depending on when you arrive. I had the privilege of dining here tonight, and I was truly surprised at the innovative menu. Lots of fun and interesting choices, but the highlight was, without question, the date carpaccio. I did not know what to expect when I ordered it, but it exceeded every expectation I had. All of the food was excellent, but that carpaccio just blew my mind. I would be remiss if I did not also comment on the remarkably good service we received from Marshall. He was an absolute gem of a server-never intrusive, always informative, and he gets Monty Python jokes, so what's not to love? I truly consider this restaurant to be my best find in Milwaukee to date-I will definitely be back. read more

Was given a gift card here for Christmas and just got to using it. After first viewing the menu, I thought it was a bit odd. But, once I started really reading thought it, a few of the items m really stuck out. There are a number of reviews that mention the diplomac, so it had to be ordered. It was incredible, amazing toppings on a fresh and homemade bun that really made the burger. Also got the fries- thin, crispy, salty...just what you want and they master it well, even as takeout. We also ordered the chicken confit leg and biscuit dish...GET THIS! I would say this is one of the best done dishes I've had in awhile. Perfectly done chicken, and amazingly tender and flavorful biscuits with chicken liver pate to go with. Just wonderful. Everyone had a welcoming personality at the Diplomat. The food presentation reminded me of Ardent. They put time into it and the wait staff was excited to share the flavor profiles of the dishes. Great prices and will happily be returning. I'm no bougie person but when the chef&owner came out from the kitchen to see how we were liking the meal, it was a nice touch. Jessica was a great waitress for Jenna and myself. She made some solid cocktails - give the aviation a go if she is there. As for yelp reviewer, Nicole H, who beautifully complimented the restaurants work but gave only three stars in her review, shame on you. The Diplomat was a wonderful choice for dinner this Saturday night with my mom and sister. The location is well decorated and a very cozy setting. Though it is April outside, we visited during a very special Wisconsin treat of a snow storm. Heading into a dimly lit restaurant with comfortable seating was quick to warm us up!l They do have fake hardwood floors though which were wet and almost caused my sister to fall! That was no bueno. The food was so delicious! They have a menu of "modern American choices". Everything from hearty meats, soups and vegetarian delights. We tried 4 items which was plenty of food for us three ladies. We tried the Diplomat fries which are large potato wedges - this is a hearty portion! The pork shoulder dish came with cranberries and a slice of corn bread - this one was my favorite. The Chicken in a Biscuit had maple butter which was so good!! Lastly the trout - not our favorite but was till okay. Very small portion on this option. Prices are on point and many ingredients age locally sources. Parking sucks - welcome to Brady street I supposed. Service was super friendly, prompt and helpful! Well for sure be back! read more

Food was good but no reason to ever go back. They completely forgot to bring out one of our entrees. No apology. And said they couldn't fire up the forgotten plate because they needed the table for the next guest. Ordered a Manhattan... but instead got an Old Fashioned. Old fashioned was good... but that's not what I ordered. Asked for a correction. Never came. We ordered a glass of wine. Took 30 mins. Finally said cancel it. I read some of the reviews of The Diplomat so we went there with no expectations and my mind was blown away by the amazing dishes. Everything we had and we had almost everything on the menu was sublime, from the trout to the burger, truly sublime. The drinks and wine were also amazing as was the service. The atmosphere is eclectic and comfortable. Diners should be aware that this is a tapas style of dinning meaning small plates. If I could rate this place a 10 I would. I definitely recommend this place for the amazing food and service. We already made plans to return, can't wait. read more

This is a pretty good small plates place with a great atmosphere and great service! We ordered 8 dishes + 1 dessert for four people. Every dish was good, none were really stand out. We thought the squash risotto was very good. The chicken in a biscuit was good, but be warned, chicken was barely involved! If you're looking for chicken and biscuits, the chicken leg with maple coffee cake fills that taste a bit better. Something I found a bit odd is that almost every dish we ordered was sweet. There were apples, cranberries, dates, fig, maple, etc in everything we got. That could have been our ordering blunder, though! For dessert we had the peanut butter pie which was delicious but too rich to have more than one bite. We went there after reading that the chef won a very prestigious James Beard award. We don't eat out much lately because of how expensive everything became, so we were really looking forward to eating some great food. Honestly, it was disappointing. Everything from a Very Limited menu to ambiance and service was unimpressive. My advice, don't just go there because of the reviews or the awards, check out the menu first to make sure you are interested in at least 2 dishes (in case one is not available), I made that mistake and couldn't find anything I was excited about. Never order chicken at the restaurant, because I think it's lame, but that's exactly what I ended up getting based on the choices given. Our companions were of the same opinion. read more

My family of 4 group dined on a Friday night at 7:30, showing up about 15 minutes early to have a drink at the bar. The bartender was on her own and quite backed up so we waited about 15 minutes to order and another 10 minutes for them to be delivered to the table. We had the trout, burger, short ribs and mushrooms. The short ribs and mushrooms were the standouts. Trout was ok but I should've gotten the chicken since I've never been wild about this fish. The red meat eaters said the burger was good but it has 3 buns like the Big Mac so plenty of bread. We could tell our server was a bit overwhelmed with the number of tables, and trying to answer all the diners questions. We may go back but will reset expectations. read more

One of the few restaurants in Milwaukee with a warm ambience as opposed to the ever-popular sterile look most restaurants here seem to strive for. I like sitting at the bar -- the staff is attentive, friendly but not overbearing. The menu is diverse and eclectic and almost every item is a winner. And make sure to try the triple blanched steak fries with garlic aioli. Second best fries I've ever had behind McDonald's. If you want a warm, friendly, cozy place with delicious food and drink, this is one of the few spots in Milwaukee that delivers. read more

The Diplomat is a breathe of fresh air on Brady street. Since moving from Chicago, it's been difficult to find anything north of Michigan St that rivals the talent in chi town. The staff is amazingly friendly and each waiter knows what is actually on the menu. The owner is so welcoming and makes the cool atmosphere also feel genuine. We tried a few dishes, including the chicken and the rehydrated cod, which both had amazing flavor. They still have some food things to figure out (the fries were iffy), but the potential is defiantly there. Upscale food without the stuffiness most MKE restaurants still think they need. read more

My first stop at the Diplomat was for a work happy hour. I had a glass of their $5 red during happy hour, then another glass of a different red at non-happy hour prices. Service was good and I really got a kick out of the mid-century modern decor in the bar. It's nice that while the decor is modern and stylish, the bar stools are sturdy and sensible. I came back for dinner on date night a few months later. Again we sat at the bar and I ordered the asparagus soup and the yellow corn grits (happy hour price). My soup came out first and had a nice bit of bar-side presentation where the soup came in a stainless pitcher and was poured atop a bowl pre-set with a petite goat cheese nut roll and some artfully placed fresh greens. The soup had a beautiful fresh green color to it, and was nice. The grits arrived next, and for a happy hour dish the portion size was generous. I'm not sure if the dinner size is larger or not, but this was plenty for me. Very creamy, nicely seasoned with pepper and filled with rich mushrooms and subtle, delicate shreds of cheese. Delicious. I again had a glass of their $5 red during happy hour (a Malbec) and a glass of Mad Genius after happy hour. I enjoyed both of them. I really enjoyed The Diplomat! The staff we interacted with were all *very* friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered three plates to share (octopus, steak, and trout) with drinks. Definitely need ~5 plates for two people, but we picked some pricier ones and were sticking to a budget. The food was VERY good. All three of those plates I would highly recommend. I wish they had a couple more options, and the Wisconsinite in me wishes there was a cheese board. Overall this is a great date night place. Great, intimate place with an ever changing menu. We missed happy hour but still enjoyed a delicious bottle of wine! They have a variety of small, sharing plates on the menu plus larger entree items. We shared the beets which were delicious! The granola on top added a nice crunch when paired with the creamy ricotta. I had the corn grits which were both unique and tasty. The mushrooms on top added nice texture and flavor. The grits were creamy and when you mixed in the soft egg were extra flavorful! My friend had the Diplomac, their take on the Big Mac. Even though she needed a fork and knife to eat it she said it was delicious! I'd love to go back and try more things on the menu. read more

I have never been so disappointed and dissatisfied with a dining experience in my entire life. My large party and I were very much looking forward to visiting this restaurant as it has pretty good reviews. Let me tell you about the several situations that led to my 1 star review. We had a reservation for 16 on a Saturday night around 8/830pm- they knew we were coming yet somehow when we arrived we found out that they were "sold out" of 2 of the 4 main dishes- Chicken Fried Cornish Hen and the Trout. The only main dishes that remained was a vegetarian dish and grits with pancetta which shouldn't be considered anything but a small side. They were also sold out of one of the other dishes that we were looking forward to eating. The sold out dishes caused some issues for a couple people in our party with severe dietary restrictions. In order to accommodate us and remedy the issue we were told we would receive 4 steaks to share for 16 of us. Frustrated and quite hungry, we decided we weren't going to allow this to ruin our evening and decided to stay at the restaurant since management was working with us. We regretted this after 30 minutes when half the party didn't receive their starter dishes. When the starter dishes appeared on the table they were so small I laughed out loud. The deviled eggs tasted horrible and the "plate" was 1.5 eggs. The Diplomat Fries were soggy, undercooked and unsalted. The Chicken in a Biscuit literally had no chicken and the gnocchi had the strangest rutabaga metallic taste with overcooked gnocchi. After all the dishes were served and eaten, I was astounded at how dissatisfied I was but I knew the steak was coming- it was received and edible but they ended up charging for each of the 4 steaks that they said they were offering AND in addition to this they "gave" us Cornish Hen which they claimed was sold out in the beginning of the night! My jaw was on the floor. All 16 of us had horrible meals and were completely shocked at the slow service, horrible food and just bad managing/planning which we reflected in the tip. After we left the establishment still hungry, mad about paying extra and completely frustrated over the lack of attention, the leader of our party received an aggressive phone call from the owner or manager asking us why we tipped so low and to never come back to The Diplomat. They not once apologized for the horrible experience and it seems that this situation occurs pretty regularly which leads me to believe that they will forever be poorly run and have no interest in being competitive in any real dining market. read more

Went for happy hour on a Friday with a coworker. Bar was filled which seemed promising, so we got the last two spots at the bar. There were preset two top tables, but seemed like the vibe was you couldn't sit there for happy hour?! I think they are reserved for reservations in the dining area, they start you at the bar and then seat you in the dining room? Understaffed for sure, one bartender assigned to the whole area we were in wasn't enough. Not impressed with happy hour cocktail options - there were 3, but the issue was they were all dark liquor! Two brandy options and a bourbon option only. Where's the love for vodka, gin or tequila?! I asked about the '$4.14 Milwaukee Mixers' which was on the happy hour menu, assuming it would be a single shot mixed drink with a MKE spirit like twisted path, rehorst, etc, but bartender told me she didn't know what that special even was, and management just 'added it to the menu without telling us'. When asked what liquor she would use if I ordered, she showed a bottle of rail vodka that I'm pretty sure was called Mohawk. No thank you :) She was friendly enough, but just slammed, so not her fault. Menu was OK- got fries which were good, but $7? Not sure they were worth it. Thought to order the deviled eggs, only to see that it was literally, one egg, cut in half that was delivered to the girls next us, who were incredibly underwhelmed from when it was delivered to when they ate it (said it was warm! Warm deviled eggs?!). I don't know that I will come back based on service, general work flow issues that seemed apparent, and pricing for both happy hour and the regular menu. read more

We were kindly invited back to the Diplomat after our visit a few weeks ago. My husband and I were seated along the window and were promptly greeted by staff and our server, Sarah. She was sweet, kind, informative and offered suggestions. We had the caesar deviled eggs (light and creamy), pretzels (fresh baked and a nice beer cheese spread with a bite of horseradish), pickled vegetable salad (tangy, but a bit acidic by the end for our taste) and the pork short rib for our main. I have been here three times and each time keep waiting for it to be just "okay" because other people have thought differently than my experiences... I love this spot. My only recommendation was to enjoy the bar area. I love the vibe. I am obsessed with the fries - they are cooked to perfection, perfectly crisp and salted with a great aioli. Both times I have had the trout on the menu, it has been my favorite larger plate. The date carpaccio is also very satisfying! The only dish I thought was mediocre was the risotto, but it was still good. The wine list is great and it changes. Diplomac: The Diplomac is the sole burger offered at a quaint restaurant on Brady Street named the Diplomat. Interestingly the restaurant serves primarily small plate entrees that are meant to be shared, but this burger is the exception. It is comprised of two prime beef burgers, tomatoes, lettuce, two slices of American cheese, pickles, red onion, and a generous amount of 1000 Island dressing. The burger can best be describes as a hybrid of a "Big Mac" and a "Whopper". There is a bun in the middle like the "Big Mac" and the taste is also mostly "Big Mac", but something about it also reminded me of a "Whopper". The sesame seed bun is lightly toasted to perfection and has a nice buttery flavor. At the chief's recommendation I got the patties cooked a medium rare and it worked well (I'm usually a well-done guy when it comes to burgers). It's superior to a "Big Mac" in that the meat to bun ratio is more appropriate and there are two slices of cheese as opposed to one. Overall, I enjoyed this burger with my only complaint being that it's extremely messy to eat. Our server Marshall did an excellent job. I was a little disappointed in the size of the portions for the other menu items. For me personally, I would give it 3 stars because I'm not a fan of small plates, but for those of you that enjoy "fancy" small dishes then this place is 4 stars. I would also rate the burger 4/5. Outstanding. The service, the atmosphere, the food, the drinks, all of it is outstanding. This place is chef owned and all of the staff have high level food/wine/service industry credentials yet they are down to earth, easy going and make your experience customized and that much more rewarding. The French fries will wreck your French fry experience anywhere else and the chicken in a biscuit is mind blowing. If you can save room and get the peanut butter pie at the end of the night you will not want to share. Specialty made cocktails are no joke either - each ingredient added has a special story in its creation and evolution and/or specialty selection before it gets chosen and mixed into the creation... just ask someone to share the story of what you're drinking. I was glad to finally visit the Diplomat, as it has been sitting on my Collections list for a hot minute. My boyfriend and I visited around 8 on a Friday night, and it was absolutely packed. We were extremely lucky and snagged the last spot at a high top table. Our server took a while to get to us because she also was the bartender. I'm not a restauranteur but you should probably have a separate server for the bar high tops for such a busy night. Regardless, our server was very friendly and got our order in. We both got the oval office cocktail, which I highly recommend if you're a whiskey drinker. I've never had anything like it. For food, we ordered the brussel sprout salad, clams, and trout. If I had to rate, I would give them a 2, 4, and 5 out of 5 respectively for each dish. Brussel sprout salad was about a small handful and hardly had any Brussel sprouts. Clams were delicious, I loved the partnership of the clams, broth and fennel sausage. And that trout, I still dream about that trout. It was cooked to perfection, with a crispy skin. It is a must try dish. One thing we wish we had the chance to try was the Diplomac burger. We saw the couple next to us get it, and it looked the bomb.com but was sold out when we went to order :( It did take over an hour for us to get our food, but I'm guessing it was because of how busy it was. I was so excited to try this place because I've heard the most wonderful things about it, and I thought it was very good, but not as good as my expectations. They currently have a take-out only revised menu and I got the beet sandwich, my boyfriend had the pot pie, and we shared the peach salad and the banana bread. Like I said, everything was good and it was apparent that the ingredients were fresh. Everything was packaged nicely and there wasn't really a good reason for not totally enjoying it. I think if I were in the restaurant eating from the regular menu fresh from the kitchen it would have been 5 stars for me. Alas, I will just have to wait for this nightmare to be over. read more

First time trying out the Diplomat in the COVID era. They are offering a more limited menu Wednesday - Saturday from 4-8 pm. I applaud them for the safety measures they are taking during COVID, as they will put your food in the trunk of your car to avoid any potential contact. We ordered 2 of the DiploMac's with fries, and my girlfriend also got a Bacon, Lentil & Bean salad she wanted to eat the next day. The DiploMac is their love letter to McDonald's Big Mac, and if I were to guess I imagine McDonald's would give them a second date for this slice of food heaven. The bun on this I imagine has to be made in house as it is so fresh and delicious. Meat is cooked medium-rare which is perfect temperature for me, and all of the other toppings compliment the burger as if you were at an upscale Golden Arches. We added the fries for an additional $3 which I am not sure if I would get them next time we get it. Nice portion of fries which a couple could probably split, and they are thin cut fries which I personally am not in love with. In terms of gourmet burgers in the city, I put this in the same class as Birch + Butcher's burger selection. Loved it, can't wait to have it again, and appreciate the safety precautions in a scary time. read more

Went with another couple and ordered nearly everything on the menu. The chicken in a biscuit was the star and we immediately started talking about how to recreate the dish at home. Our server was very ebullient and maybe could have rolled it back half a notch, but overall it was a really good experience. The cocktails are really, really good. Start at the bar. The food was all very interesting and well made, though there could be some better thought going into how some of them could be shared. A pasta dish doesn't split up easily and I'm so sick of small plates places serving things in counts of three and five - how often are they serving three and five tops? I know the fries can be a point of contention, but they're giant - like a quarter of a potato. They're quite good and were a good way to start the meal. I didn't feel like we were cheated out of anything. A sign of a really good meal for me is how much I'm thinking of the dishes afterwards and I'm still thinking about that chicken in a biscuit as well as the liver pate. Both were superb. read more

Atmosphere was nice. Drink was good. Food had good flavor. Staff was friendly. However, the portions were incredibly tiny, even for a small plate restaurant. It was actually almost embarrassing to comment on the food after asked how things were by the server. On his end, and ours. We left not sated and stopped elsewhere. I think perhaps in the last few weeks the portion sizes were made even smaller as this is not mentioned in other reviews and the descriptions of the courses make the food seem more nuanced and involved. A restaurant that I'm guessing doesn't want to be known as a burger place, unfortunately or fortunately for us, the BURGER (Diplomac) was the best thing on the menu. Our party of six came in last night with zero expectations or knowledge of any reviews of The Diplomat. First glance of the menu, we thought there might be a page missing as the selections were minimal and odd. 1 chicken, 1 steak, 2 fish. That would be ok, if the sides/accompaniments were something more than a spoonful of puréed something. A for effort and creativity but I felt it missed the mark completely for us. It's never a good start looking at a menu and see nothing that really interests you, especially when hungry. No salad on menu ( not always a deal killer but it's nice to start with something healthy or a filler) Timing of food coming out leaves diners anxious and hungry. ( 5 people almost finished with meal before I got my dish) Portion size and presentation not conducive to sharing. 1/2 Chicken too awkward to cut up and share at table. (Was very overcooked) Whole trout for $28 was aggressive for what you actually received Two cubes of NY Strip and a few ramps and a dollop of puréed stuff, boring, overpriced. The three positives or best things we had at The Diplomat were, Asparagus Soup, Chicken in a Biscuit Small Plate and That Glorious DIPLOMAC! I might also mention that our server (owner and wife of the chef) was kind, courteous and informative. Very professional! Ultimately, we are open to new ideas and dining experiences. The Diplomat was excellent! Pleasantly surprised by every single dish that we had. We sat at the bar on a Saturday night and enjoyed the pickled shrimp salad, shallot tart, trout, short ribs, grits, and the blueberry/peach crumble. The bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. The Chef clearly knows what he is doing and attention to detail was evident in each dish. The well thought out menu has approximately one dozen options but each item is clearly executed perfectly! We were told the menu changes weekly and definitely look forward to trying more. We will definitely be back! Update: we returned recently and cannot say enough good things about this menu. Every single dish is made with intention. Flavors are layered in every bite and it feels like an absolute privilege to have such a culinary treat just blocks from where we live. Keep it up!
