What I don't like and never will get used to is the rude and snotty maitre d or host or reservationist or whoever handles the front end making a reservation. He is like the worst NYC hipster entitled "you are lucky to be spending your money here" hosts and waiters all rolled into one ridiculously surly middle aged teenager. I recently called to make a res and was told not only "not a chance" before I said dates, but was told a few times during the 3 minute call that "M'am if you haven't noticed, we are in the middle of a global pandemic." Really?! Even the best restaurant on the planet (and this ones close) doesn't warrant a shitty attitude. Not even during a global pandemic! Frankly I'm sick of this attitude and needed to get it off my chest. Sure, we are lucky to have an opportunity to eat there, but the restaurant is lucky to keep loyal customers. I've been coming here since I moved to the Berkshires 19 years ago and it has been a favorite place. It's one of the coolest restaurants on earth - beautiful and funky and eclectic. Last night we went with out of town friends who also loved it. Two of us got excellent burgers, 2 of us got fish dishes. Out friend loved the salmon, I thought the swordfish special was delicious although I would have preferred it hot, which is apparently the way it was supposded to be (although the very delicious potates, red pepper and capers that accompanied it were intended to be room temp).When I had to stop eating gluten 15 years ago, it continued to be a favorite place. This is the second time I've checked out the new chef and I think she's very good. However, I may never come back. Last night, despite telling the very lovely server that I have a gluten allergy, some of my food was contaminated with gluten. Maybe the person working the grill didn't get the message? My swordfish was room temperature - maybe it was made for another diner? I don't know what happened except that today I'm sick. (The last time I got glutened, I was sick for 2 weeks.) I made a reservation the bar which was a haphazardly placed plank in the corner with nowhere to put your knees. I ordered fish tacos for $24 which came out cold and literally had two pieces of fish with nothing else. I should've known better than to order tacos in Western mass! I sent that back and got a grain bowl and said which was as bland as bland could be. The charming decor and music of this place might be great if you're going for a show or drink, but the food is pretty awful. I had two experiences at the Dream Away Lodge since its re-opening. The first time I came here I was confused because the menu online didn't really match what they said they had at the restaurant. I ordered a Caesar salad with a root beer and a burger with no bun on the side of potatoes. I couldn't stress enough to everyone I knew that the Caesar salad was perfect! The dressing-to-lettuce ratio was on point, and it was absolutely delicious! The burger without the bun was ok, but I still enjoyed it. The service was slow, but our waitress was friendly. The table next to us had children banging heavily on the piano, which did disturb the peace a bit, but once they left everything was peaceful. The second time around, I ordered a Caesar salad bowl of the mac and cheese. My mom ordered the grilled salad. They gave us both the same salad and claimed it was a Caesar salad. I didn't understand how we both ordered two different things and got the same thing. I also know that the second time around, it wasn't the same Caesar salad. If you look at the two Caesar salad pictures, you can see a clear difference in ingredients. The dressing was different and there weren't any jalapenos the first time around. All of that would have been fine if they called it something else. I still would have liked it, but our server gave us an attitude when we told her about it. She ended up not serving us for the rest of the night after that, and we got someone else who was really kind and helpful. The chef even came out and talked to us! That was really cool. The mac and cheese was really good, and we loved our new server so I'm glad my experience with the restaurant started well and ended well. I'm also glad they kept the live music going because that was a key part of the Dream Away Lodge. This was our first visit, and it was exceptional. The bartender was so friendly and skilled. The madre di got us a cute table in the main room, and it felt like we were invited into a big boisterous family. Not to loud thought, the acoustics were perfect for talking. The waitress was also a pleasure, and she worked with us and our non-dairy preferences to suggest the perfect meal. To top it off, there was a really great band, Jordan Weller, whom I have heard on WBCR, small world here. Turns out it was their first time there, too. read more

I wrote a one star review a number of years ago about the crazed owner throwing us out with the "F" word for some infraction that left us dumbfounded and swearing never to return. But yesterday my wife said let's go! I heard there was a new owner. I guess there was although the nutball former owner was still roaming around in a pork pie hat. The food was abominable and obscenely high priced. For $28 I received a " Peruvian" 1/2 chicken. The worst. Rubbery skin and the bird was not fully cooked. Took two bites and left the rest. My wife had the $26 salmon salad. A small filet in a small bowl with a few lettuce leaves atop a mess of raw vegetables. Good grief. We snuck out the back as my wife scared that the old owner would recognize her after 10 years. Hall of Shame times 10. read more

Dream Away is back and better than ever, they new owners kept the funky, unique character but expanded the menu. I loved my trout and one of my 4 dining companions said the salmon Nicoise she had was the best Niçoise salad she'd ever had. There are also great cocktails The service was wonderful including two very incredibly helpful waitresses pitching in when my 90 old father had a nose bleed. My only hope is that they keep expanding the menu (especially with seafood and veggie options) so I can come here regularly and have variety! read more

We have always loved this place and have visited many times, even leaving a 5-star review in the past. However, this time was different. The food was very average, which I could overlook on a busy summer night. What really disappointed me was how rushed we felt. All the courses were served quickly, and it seemed like they were pushing us out the door. To make matters worse, they asked us to leave the table, which then remained empty after we left. I am so sorry to give a negative review to my beloved Dream Away Lodge. The atmosphere is still as wonderful as I remember it, but sadly, the food is just lacking. The new owners appear not to have given the new chef any leeway in creating a menu. Consequently, the extremely limited menu is overpriced, tasteless, and not worth ordering. This is not just my opinion, but I have heard exactly the same sentiment from so many people locally. I love the funky vibe and the live music. The menu looks fantastic. But, the food doesn't live up to the menu. At best, the food was bland. In reality, it was just poor quality. I ordered lamb on hummus, which should have been an interesting Mediterranean dish. It wasn't. The lamb was little crumbles, not slices, sitting on top of what could best be described as chickpea mash. It tasted a bit like polenta. There were no interesting spices in the dish. If I did not know what the menu said, I would have had no idea what I ordered. My wife got the tamale special. It was very doughy with little meat or vegetables. It was also bland. The sauce that came with it was so spicy that it was hardly edible. And, we like spicy foods. So, it was poor either with or without the sauce. I am told that the burgers and drinks are excellent by the people at the adjacent table. Our guests enjoyed the Mac and Chesse dinner as well as the fettuccine in clam sauce. My guess is that the simple meals are best. As for the fun environment, there are two elements. It is a funky old speakeasy out in the middle of nowhere. You can feel the party. In addition, there is the people watching. It is an unusual crowd that mixes well together. The live music is fun and intimate. The drinks do flow. Warning..... If you are allergic to cats, they have freedom to walk anywhere in the dining room. And the place can have a musty smell. Warning..... There is no cell phone coverage and the owner will not give you the wifi password. That is great for a disconnected time. But, if you are a doctor or worried about a sick family member, this may not be your choice. P.S. My friends and I came to this place on Saturday around 5pm on 7-25-2020. We had reservations for four people. We were directed outside towards back of property. We saw the owner , but he was on phone. We walked through towards back, and he came over to us and making faces and said excuse me. I guess it was our fault but he seemed rude and annoyed even after we apologized. We were brought to our table and our waitress Olivia was very friendly. Drinks were great ( margaritas) and we order two salmon plates and two pork kimchee plates. Food was good and filling. We checked inside after our meals, and thought place was funky. We saw the episode on chronicle, thought we would check it out. We were out there on a mini vacation and figured we would try it. Probably won't go back cause menu was very limited. It is now acceptable to write a review, as it appears that I have been accepted as a friend of the Dream Away! Those that frequent might understand that being known here can moderately change the flavor of your evening. "Visiting" the lodge cannot be scribed, words cannot capture the experience, it has to be lived. Mosquitoes be damned, you will never ruin my evening, I consider you one of the charms as much as the "fireflies". Start the evening by strolling the gardens while the outdoor band warms up, and like in the 70's, get yourself in the proper mood! A cocktail before dinner on the lawn, the freaking best Manhattan ever. Dinner was leisurely, apps and mains very good, but the sour cherry panna cotta......over the top, amazing!!!!! This place leaves a lot to be desired. Loud and annoying inside with a beer ambiance and champagne prices. My husband got a shotglass of Pepsi and unknowingly ordered refills at Cost of $2 per shot. My martini was less expensive than his soda. For $22 I got a few Greek olives, some tomatoes and salad dressing. Kind of reminds me of the farm houses in Hadley I used to go to in college to watch house shows with dirty punks abusing their instruments and spewing marxist propaganda. Not a pleasant reminder. It was good and I would have it again but I could probably pick up the ingredients at a grocery store for a fraction of the price. Way over priced. It was literally $14 for basically a plate of canned greek food. The skordalia was good. The baked trout was pretty good too. Very small portion for $26. But the fish itself was tasty, moist, and cooked perfectly. Server let me know it's farm raised in Idaho. Woohoo. But hey, the cocktails were so good. Even though we were overcharged two bucks for our cocktails to be made on the rocks. It was so good though. On the brightside, coffee and tea are complimentary. I'm very glad I went. Not good. The place looked dirty and cluttered. It was hot and very loud with music blaring. There was a male staff member working in the kitchen wearing what looked like an oversized tank top that exposed his bare armpits. It was disgusting and management should have been ashamed to have allowed that. It makes me wonder if they have anyone working there who is ServSafe qualified. To say the quality is nothing special would be kind. Five Guys makes a better tasting burger for more than half the price and will let you choose your toppings. There was a hair found in the poutine. The brownie was a rock hard piece from the corner of the pan. The draft beer was luke warm. The oven fries were tasteless (they seemed to be frozen homefried breakfast potatoes). Then there was the $10 Mac and cheese side. If there was a Mac and cheese police then they would have to raided the place. I got boiled elbow macaroni with no noticeable cheese or cheese sauce and no taste. The service was good. The server was very nice and attentive as was all the employees that we interacted with. They all seemed to be from the central casting of a Grateful Dead biopic but deserve credit for being the only bright spot of the evening. The Dreamaway is an institution in Becket. I guess people believe it to be some sort of hollowed ground because Bob Dylan drank there once 50 years ago. If the owners are going to trade on that legacy then they need to up their game,,,, a lot. They need a professional chef to fix what is coming out of the kitchen and hold the kitchen staff to some basic standards. Everyone has tried to captured a bit of the charm and magic of The Dream Away in their reviews, but you'll never understand until you go there. You drive forever until you think you must have gone too far or taken a wrong turn and then you drive up to a little old lodge with a gravel lot full of cars. Flowers are blooming all summer and curiosities are nestled into every corner. Eat a perfect meal off of mis-matched china and sample one of the signature cocktails or top-shelf tequillas. Then order another at the funky retro bar (my favorite is the Frasca, named after the original proprietress) and mosey on out to the fire in the front yard or over to the music room where you can sink into a couch, put your feet up on a embroidered footstool and listen to local musicians. After being told about this place by my butcher over a year ago, we decided to give it a shot. I call them an hour and a half before we decide to go and we were able to get a table. Getting there was a lovely autumn ride through the Berkshires, (take route 20 not the pike. More scenery.) When we arrive we were late for our reservation, (I hate being late) but, no issue we were seated. It also just so happens that there is a, "Pop up" cash only oyster bar presented by the East Dennis Oyster Farm. Side note: John and Stephanie, the owners are great friendly people producing in my opinion, some of the best oysters Massachusetts has to offer. Now back to the lodge... Just as described to me, the place is very eclectic from the decor to the menu. Our waitress, who was due to have her baby on Thanksgiving was tops! Get personality, very knowledgeable about the menu and all around A+. Our food choices for the night: Apps: Two dozen oysters, bread with sea salt/butter and the wedge salad. The oysters: Superb! My wife likes mignonette with her oysters. They didn't have any but our waitress brought out some locally made apple cider vinegar, which was outstanding. The Bread w/ sea salt and butter: Very tasty, I would have liked to have seen the butter room temp or just a tad softer. None the less it was great. The Wedge: Probably the best I've every had, which is odd because I hate iceberg. The blue cheese dressing was so good it was almost a religious experience. I would have licked the plate clean if I was at home. I get the ribeye with winter vegetables and adjhika. Wife gets the seared duck breast with arugula and maple syrup. The food comes out, perfect portion sizes and well plated. My steak: A healthy sized boneless ribeye. Perfectly cooked to rare, nice marbling and an excellent seared crust. I am a huge fan of seasonings, however I must say it was refreshing at the lack of seasoning on the steak. It was a great cut of meat and it was nice to taste the true flavor of the meat. I had never tried adjhika, but there was something oddly desirable about it. I would describe it as sofrito with a hint of dill but had the consistency of a relish. My wife's duck: Cooked rare to medium rare as duck should be. It had a nice sear on it and again it was refreshing not too have duck drown in some sort of fruit sauce. The maple syrup was a nice touch. Oh, I almost forgot the cocktails. I get a spiked cider and my wife gets a spicy cucumber, jalapeno concoction. Both were very good. We skip dessert, I have a healthy pour of whiskey and she had another cucumber drink. The bill, very reasonable for what we got. We will definitely be back when they reopen in they spring. The Chef Amy is wonderful and full of surprises as the menus often changes. Great dishes go and even more fabulous ones show up. Back to the Dream Away, if you are looking for a big city experience, meticulous detail of decor, fine china, fast service, air conditioning, valet parking.........WHY ARE YOU IN THE BIRKSHIRES! STAY HOME.... And believe me I travel all over the world for pleasure and business and I live in NYC 3-4 days a week. I like FINE DINING and I do it all the time, but it gets old.... I go to Dream Away to remember the simple life, to slow down, to take a breath. It has all that is needed for this experience. Oh, no air conditioning, neither does my house up here. It's a hill town and occasionally its HOT. I am 57, I grew up in the days of NO AC and it was fine. I watch people drive their cars and no one opens their windows, they use AC... how about letting your hair blow about and smell the fresh air. The dining room and porch is filled with relics of yesteryear, so you get a hodge podge of plates and glasses, HOW FUN is that. Delicious food (mentioning this again). It sometimes takes a bit of time to be served but if you want FRESH home cooked with love food it's worth the wait. The wait staff is FANTASTIC, they do their best to get things right all the time. They are warm and friendly, they do their very best to make the experience fantastic. Finally, this is not a place for everyone, again if you want to be pampered, in a sterile climate controlled environment go someplace else. If you don't like dogs or animals don't go. From time to time there are service animals in there. Then there is Paterson, Daniel's dog. He LIVES there so get over it. It's his home. That's what makes this place special and what it is. My wife does not like animals for the most part and she smiles when Paterson comes over for a visit. The music room is very special. It's a place to hear musicians play THEIR music. There are no cover songs. The room deserves the respect of what it is. It is a music room, so NO talking just listening. Sit back, close your eyes, and listen to one of life's pleasures. Dream of the magic of years past and ponder on who has passed through this legendary room. The walls are filled with photos of some of these people, take the time to look around. At first we came to dream away to celebrate a birthday and it was a special day for us but it happened to be a disaster !The food is way too expensive ,and service is just at zero point. IT WAS JUST THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! The waitress was incredibly ignorant and we were waiting forever and all of us had a feeling that she was ignoring us all the time. The second and I would say the worst was the owner Daniel Osman who just ruined everything for us! He humiliated us and insulted us in front of the musician. And he even kicked us out . I've never experienced such an attitude in my whole life. How people who work in service can be that rude and aggressive toward people who actually buy their food. !I will never ever go there again !And totally don't recommend!!!!!! read more

Dream Away has quite a reputation and when I made a reservation for a rare night out with my wife I was looking forward to a special meal. Our experience was quite the opposite. Yes the ambiance is quirky and interesting and despite other reviews the service was cordial and we had no run ins with the ornery owner. The food on the other hand was atrocious. We ordered 3 items, the burrata and tomatoes, homemade bbq seitan and Vietnamese chicken salad. All sounded promising, but when they arrived at the table they looked like they were plated at the county fair and tasted like they came out of an overly frozen box. The tomatoes and burrata were actually ok, but it's summer in a place where there are many farms and farm stands, the least you could do is get an heirloom tomato for the price you charge. This tomato looks like it came from the Big Y produce aisle (no offense Big Y, I Big Y). The seitan tasted like nothing except the overly powerful bbq sauce which tasted awful (too much vinegar). The chicken salad consisted of some shredded chicken, peanuts and tons of cabbage and tasted like way too much vinegar was poured all over it. Don't let the cocktail list fool you either. My drink (the front porch) tasted like lemon soda. Basically anyone could make it. All in all don't waste your time or money for this over priced UNDERwhelming fare. You're better off going to Trader Joe's. Positive side note: The back yard is fun and good for the kids. They have a pop up pizza Hill Town Hot Pies and they taste delicious. read more

If you cant handle the owner, Daniel, I suggest you stick to the Olive Garden or Applebees. The Dream Away is strange and, apparently, not for everyone but you're not going to find a granite fire pit area in the parking lot between Applebees and Home Depot or kind of wonderful grounds to stroll around either. If you're finding Daniel a bit condescending take my advice, stay away from France entirely, and posh places in New York, and bicycle shops. This is, by far, our favorite restaurant in Massachusetts. It's someplace that still hasn't had the character beaten out of it. We had a very pregnant woman with dreadlocks as out waitress and cats roam the dining room. Every restaurant menu has it's hits and misses and this place is, no doubt, expensive. Being at the Dream Away is a little bit like being a guest on the Dick Cavett Show.
